<ul class="summary-list"><li>A recent study found that drivers viewed cyclists wearing a helmet or safety vest as "less human."</li><li>This research could add fuel to the debate over bike helmet mandates in the US.</li></ul>Anyone who's bicycled on car-dominated streets knows how unwelcome drivers can make them feel. But basic measures cyclists take to protect themselves in the case of an accident could actually be hurting them. A <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1369847823001018" target="_blank" rel="noopener">recent study</a> conducted in Australia by academics at Queensland University and Flinders University found that bicyclists who wear helmets or safety vests might be putting themselves more at risk than if they'd gone without safety attire.Researchers found that cyclists wearing helmets or vests are viewed as "less human" than those without any safety gear on. They surveyed 563 people, asking them to answer a questionnaire using photos of people in both cycling-specific attire and regular clothes to assess perceptions of dehumanization. Eight different photos — four of a man and four of a woman — showed a model standing with a bicycle while wearing either no safety gear, a baseball cap, a bicycle helmet, or a high-visibility vest. Respondents also rated bicyclists on a dehumanization scale, placing them somewhere between a bug and a human, and answered other questions relating to behavior and demographics. Those surveyed said that a man or woman wearing a high-visibility vest looked the least human, while those wearing no gear were seen as the most human. And those who view cyclists as less than human are more likely to be a threat to cyclists on the streets. <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1369847818308593?via%3Dihub#" target="_blank" rel="noopener">A 2019 study found a link</a> between dehumanization and aggressive driving around cyclists. The 2019 study found that "respondents who rated cyclists as 89 percent human or less showed 1.87 times more direct aggressive behaviors to cyclists compared to the respondents who rated cyclist as more than 90 percent human." Previous research <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26275525/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">has found</a> that generally negative views about cyclists are also associated with more dangerous and aggressive driving. The researchers initially hypothesized that both a helmet and baseball cap would make a cyclist appear less human by obscuring their head and hair. But the study, published in Transportation Research Part F: Traffic Psychology and Behaviour, found that both the helmet and the vest were more likely to dehumanize a rider than the baseball cap. Overall, 30% of respondents viewed cyclists as less than fully human. The survey respondents weren't representative of the Australian population — they were "more likely to be male, earn higher incomes, be employed full time, be middle aged, and more highly educated," the researchers noted. They were also much more likely to bicycle regularly — 72% said they rode at least once a week, compared to 12% of the Australian population that does the same. There's no federal bike helmet law, but in 2019, the National Transportation Safety Board <a href="https://www.ntsb.gov/news/press-releases/Pages/NR20191105.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noopener">recommended</a> that all 50 states mandate that adults wear helmets (many already require this for kids). Colin Browne, communications director for the Washington Area Bicyclist Association, told Insider recently that while wearing a bike helmet is a smart personal choice, helmet mandates are "terrible policy." Cycling is one way to get aerobic exercise — also known as <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-often-should-you-do-cardio" target="_blank" rel="noopener">cardio</a> — which gets your heart and lungs working. For example, a large 2017 <a href="https://www.bmj.com/content/357/bmj.j1456" target="_blank" rel="noopener">study</a> looked at the benefits of "active commuting" and found that cycling to work was associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and death. "When we walk, and when our foot hits the ground, because of gravity, we hit with two to four times our body weight," says <a href="https://revolutionsinfitness.com/team/#curtis" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Curtis Cramblett</a>, a licensed physical therapist and certified cycling coach, strength and conditioning coach, and bike fitting educator. On a bike, there is still some force on the joints, depending on how hard you're pushing on the pedals, but cycling does not deliver the compressive force that walking does, Cramblett says. This makes it suitable for people who may have injuries, such as a knee or hip replacement, or a lower back problem. "Because it's low impact and because you're sitting on a saddle, it can be as gentle as you like," Cramblett says. <h2>Cycling improves balance and coordination</h2> A small 2013 <a href="https://www.hindawi.com/journals/jeph/2013/686412/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">study</a> found that bicycling can improve balance and even help prevent falls for older adults. However, these benefits likely apply only to cycling outdoors, and not for indoor stationary cycling. "When you're trying to keep a bike upright, you're working on balance," Cramblett says. That's why cycling is often recommended for people with neurological disorders to train balance and coordination. In fact, a small 2015 <a href="https://www.jstage.jst.go.jp/article/jpts/27/11/27_jpts-2015-576/_article" target="_blank" rel="noopener">study</a> found that stationary cycling can improve balance in <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-recover-from-a-stroke" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stroke</a> patients. "Once you learn to ride a bike, you can always do it. The most important benefit of cycling might be the same one you appreciated as a kid. "Think about the first couple of times you were on a bike: the freedom, the joy, the play, the smile, the laughter — there's an emotion that comes into that old memory," Cramblett says. <h2>How to bike safely </h2>For beginners, Cramblett recommends starting out slow — maybe once or twice a week for 15 or 20 minutes. "Then you can work your way up, giving your tissues, your tendons, your muscles, your joints, an opportunity to get used to the activity," he says. People often jump into activities too fast and do too much, but that can cause injury and make it a chore rather than something you enjoy, he says. Comfort is also important. If the position of your saddle or handlebars is off, "it puts undue stress on your joints," Cramblett says. Getting your bike professionally fitted can prevent pain and injury, and this applies to both outdoor bikes and stationary bikes.If you're cycling outdoors, here's how to do it safely: <ol><li> Light yourself up, no matter what time of day. Cramblett cautions against beginners riding at night, but he recommends "lighting yourself up like a Christmas tree," even in broad daylight. Blinking lights raise your visibility, so cars can see you from farther away, Cramblett says. </li><li> Ride defensively. It's safest to assume that a car near you doesn't see you and might turn in front of you. "Over-communicate if you're on the bike, and use your hand signals," Cramblett says. </li><li> Pick your streets. If you're new to cycling, avoid streets with heavy traffic and no bike lanes. "Now, more and more places have green lanes that are nice and wide, and cars can see there's a bike," Cramblett says.</li><li> Learn the ropes. Research is ongoing about whether treating PTSD will restore memory function, but it can improve overall quality of life. <h2>7. Malnutrition</h2>What you eat — or don't eat — can impact your brain health and memory function. Most of the research about malnutrition and memory loss has focused on people with dementia, but the research indicates that being malnourished can <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4919003/#:~:text=Longitudinal%20cohort%20studies%20have%20reported,function%20%5B3,4%5D." target="_blank" rel="noopener">increase the risk for memory loss</a> as well as make <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6723872/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pre-existing memory loss worse</a>. Being deficient in either is associated with memory problems. Other symptoms of <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/diet-nutrition/b12-deficiency" target="_blank" rel="noopener">B12 deficiency</a> include, anemia, unexplained weight loss, tiredness or weakness. A poor night's sleep leaves you "running on not only an empty gas tank the next day, but also as if you haven't had your oil changed," Holden says. What to do about it: Get the recommended <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-much-sleep-do-you-need" target="_blank" rel="noopener">7-9 hours of sleep each night</a>. Implement a <a href="https://www.insider.com/4-expert-tips-to-prepare-yourself-for-good-nights-sleep-2020-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sleep hygiene routine</a> to help yourself fall asleep faster and stay asleep. Finally, address any underlying conditions like <a href="https://www.insider.com/why-does-depression-make-you-tired" target="_blank" rel="noopener">depression</a>, <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-is-insomnia" target="_blank" rel="noopener">insomnia</a>, or <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-treat-sleep-apnea" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sleep apnea</a> that might be causing you to lose sleep. "Sleep apnea is an extremely common cause of memory trouble," says Holden. "And once you treat the apnea the memory goes back to normal."<h2>5. Depression</h2>One of the most common causes of short-term memory loss in people younger than 50 is mood disorders, including depression, says Holden. People with depression are <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5729845/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">more likely</a> than their peers to report memory problems, and depression has been <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5729845/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">linked</a> to trouble recalling information and remembering. Doctors are still working to understand why, but it's not surprising to Holden that depression affects memory. "It changes our brain chemistry and electrical signaling in our brain," she says. What to do about it: Talk to your doctor about your depression symptoms and <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-deal-with-depression" target="_blank" rel="noopener">get treatment. </a>That might include <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/best-online-therapy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">talk-therapy</a> and medications like SSRIs. Some people have memory improvements after treating depression, while others experience permanent impairments. Even if you're not able to alleviate depression, cognitive rehabilitation — therapy to improve brain function after an injury — may improve memory, according to a small 2015 <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4525431/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">study</a>. <h2>6. PTSD</h2>Post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, is a mental <keyword id="11894571" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="health" source="Orion">health</keyword> disorder that includes having anxiety or flashbacks after experiencing trauma. <a href="https://www.insider.com/do-i-have-ptsd" target="_blank" rel="noopener">People with PTSD</a> often have intense, even invasive memories of the traumatic event. Yet, PTSD is associated with <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5378624/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reduced cognitive function</a> and <a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0188953" target="_blank" rel="noopener">trouble with short-term memory</a>. "In addition to the too much memory of the bad stuff, there's also some downplaying of other memories because so much of that energy is being put towards the traumatic event," says Holden. What to do about it: <a href="https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/publications/post-traumatic-stress-disorder-ptsd#part_6135" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Treatment for PTSD</a> can include talk therapy, exposure therapy, or EMDR. Research is ongoing about whether treating PTSD will restore memory function, but it can improve overall quality of life. <h2>7. Malnutrition</h2>What you eat — or don't eat — can impact your brain health and memory function. Most of the research about malnutrition and memory loss has focused on people with dementia, but the research indicates that being malnourished can <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4919003/#:~:text=Longitudinal%20cohort%20studies%20have%20reported,function%20%5B3,4%5D." target="_blank" rel="noopener">increase the risk for memory loss</a> as well as make <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6723872/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pre-existing memory loss worse</a>. When patients present with short-term memory loss, Holden makes sure they're getting enough of two key nutrients: <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4846521/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">vitamin B1 (thiamine)</a> and <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7077099/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">vitamin B12 (folate)</a>. Being deficient in either is associated with memory problems. Other symptoms of <a href="https://www.insider.com/b12-deficiency" target="_blank" rel="noopener">B12 deficiency</a> include, anemia, unexplained weight loss, tiredness or weakness. A <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK537204/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">B1 deficiency</a> can cause loss of appetite and weight loss, nerve problems including tingling, blurred vision, and nausea. Note: People who drink too much or have undergone weight loss surgery are at increased risk for both these deficiencies, says Holden. What to do about it: Eat a healthy, <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-count-macros" target="_blank" rel="noopener">macronutrient-rich diet</a> like the <a href="https://www.insider.com/mediterranean-diet" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mediterranean diet</a>, which includes a lot of seafood, lean meat, and plant based whole foods like nuts that are rich sources of <a href="https://www.insider.com/foods-that-have-vitamin-b-2019-5#:~:text=Some%20foods%20that%20contain%20decent,INSIDER's%20homepage%20for%20more%20stories." target="_blank" rel="noopener">B vitamins</a>. "Anything that's good for our bodies is good for our brain, so we always recommend that people get as many colors and fresh items in their diet as possible," Holden says. Talk to your doctor about taking a multivitamin or supplement containing B1 or B12. <h2>8. Dementia and neurological disease</h2>Short-term memory loss is normal and common. For most people, it will not lead to dementia or severe memory loss. However, in rare cases short-term memory loss can be an <a href="https://www.alz.org/alzheimers-dementia/10_signs" target="_blank" rel="noopener">early sign</a> of dementia, which <a href="https://www.alz.org/alzheimers-dementia/difference-between-dementia-and-alzheimer-s" target="_blank" rel="noopener">includes</a> conditions like Alzheimer's.Short-term memory loss becomes cause for concern when it leads to <a href="https://www.alz.org/alzheimers-dementia/what-is-dementia/related_conditions/mild-cognitive-impairment" target="_blank" rel="noopener">mild cognitive impairment</a>, or MCI, which can precede more serious memory decline. People with MCI have memory issues that are significant enough that they and their loved ones notice. But, they're still able to function day to day. "When we do thinking and memory testing we see objective impairments on their tests, but they are still fully functionally independent: paying their bills, managing their medications, driving, shopping," Holden says. What to do about it: People with MCI should see their doctor for testing and monitoring. Early diagnosis is<a href="https://alzheimer.ca/en/about-dementia/do-i-have-dementia/how-get-tested-dementia/10-benefits-early-diagnosis" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> important</a> for treatment, which can delay the onset of dementia and <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6935598/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">can help prevent or delay</a> more severe symptoms. <h2>How to prevent short-term memory loss</h2>Living a healthy lifestyle may keep your brain healthy and help you remember things, says Hafeez. "Simple things like eating right, sleeping well, and staying socially active will help counter the issue of memory loss," she says. Moreover, engaging your brain can help keep you sharp. You don't have to do crossword puzzles, but challenge your cognition by learning new skills like games, crafts, hobbies, or languages, says Holden. Note: There are currently <a href="https://www.alzheimers.org.uk/about-dementia/risk-factors-and-prevention/brain-training" target="_blank" rel="noopener">no brain training exercises</a> that have been clinically proven to reduce the risk of dementia or boost memory. <h2>Insider's takeaway</h2>Everyone experiences short-term memory loss occasionally. It's usually triggered by stress, which causes a sudden surge in the number of dormant hair follicles, thus leading to increased shedding. It can also come after you've experienced a high fever or illness, which is why many people have reported hair shedding after contracting COVID-19.</li><li><a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK482293/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Anagen effluvium</a> is rapid hair loss caused by medications, such as chemotherapy drugs.</li><li><a href="https://www.insider.com/jada-pinkett-smith-alopecia-causes-symptoms-hair-loss-disease-2022-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Alopecia areata</a> is an <a href="https://medlineplus.gov/genetics/condition/alopecia-areata/#causes" target="_blank" rel="noopener">autoimmune condition</a> in which the immune system attacks the hair follicles. In fact, up to <a href="https://www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/treating-female-pattern-hair-loss" target="_blank" rel="noopener">two-thirds of women</a> experience <a href="https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/thinning-hair-in-women-why-it-happens-and-what-helps-2020032719267" target="_blank" rel="noopener">hair thinning</a> or bald spots after <a href="https://www.insider.com/menopause-age" target="_blank" rel="noopener">menopause</a>. Zuriarrain says hair loss related to hormonal changes from pregnancy or stress is usually only temporary, and therefore may require you to wait to give birth or take steps to<a href="https://www.insider.com/stress-relief" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> mitigate your stress levels</a> in order to treat it.If your hair loss seems to be triggered by something else, you may consider supplements or medications. But not all supplements on the market may have scientific backing. Here are some of the ones that do:<ul><li>Vitamin D: A <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6380979/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2019 review</a> found vitamin D supplements can help improve androgenetic alopecia and telogen effluvium, two of the most common types of hair loss. </li><li>Omega 3 and 6 plus antioxidants: A small <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25573272/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2015 study</a> found that a supplement with omega fatty acids along with antioxidants helped to improve hair density. Of the participants who took this supplement for six months, 89.9% reported a reduction in hair loss. If you have an iron deficiency, <a href="https://www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/treating-female-pattern-hair-loss" target="_blank" rel="noopener">supplementing with this mineral</a> may help to slow or stop hair loss. </li><li>Viviscal: A <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4389977/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2015 study</a> of women with self-perceived thinning hair found that taking the natural marine collagen protein supplement Viviscal for 90 days decreased hair shedding while improving hair quality and strength. </li><li>Nutrafol: A <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29742189/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2018 study</a> found that a "significant percentage" of subjects who took the plant-based supplement Nutrafol saw an improvement in hair growth, volume, thickness, and hair growth rate.</li></ul>As for medications, the only FDA-approved hair loss medication for both men and women is <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements/minoxidil-topical-route/side-effects/drg-20068750?p=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Minoxidil</a> (2% or 5%). This medication is available over-the-counter and applied topically to the scalp, but may take several months until you see results. "Minoxidil helps by keeping the hair in the strongest part of the hair cycle to improve the overall thickness of the hair," says Cohen. "This can be very safe and very effective for women with hair loss."Another <a href="https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/16921-hair-loss-in-women" target="_blank" rel="noopener">prescription hair loss medication</a> is<a href="https://www.aocd.org/page/FemalePatternHair" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Spironolactone</a>, a type of steroid that <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3769411/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">hinders the effects of androgens in the body</a> and tends to be more effective for women who experience pre-menopausal hair loss. Corticosteroids are sometimes used to suppress the immune system and <a href="https://nyulangone.org/conditions/hair-loss/treatments/medication-for-hair-loss" target="_blank" rel="noopener">treat alopecia areata</a>. They can either be applied topically or injected directly into the scalp.
