Japanese scientists have engineered a system for creating remote-controlled cyborg cockroaches. Cyborg cockroaches are equipped with a tiny wireless control module powered by a rechargeable battery attached to a solar cell. Despite the mechanical devices, flexible and ultrathin electronics allow cockroaches to move freely. The team of scientists at the <keyword id="14909932" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="RIKEN-Cluster" source="Orion">RIKEN Cluster</keyword> for Pioneering Research (CPR) has reported the result in the scientific<a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41528-022-00207-2"> journal npj Flexible Electronics.</a> The cyborg cockroaches, which are part insect and part machine, are intended to enter hazardous areas, monitor the environment or undertake search and rescue missions without needing to be recharged. <div type="image" title="cyborg cockroaches" msid="94022456" hostid="261" sizebytes="22384"></div>The body-mounted ultrathin organic solar cell achieves a power output of 17.2mW. Also, researchers have claimed that these ultrathin and flexible solar cell doesn’t come in the way of the cockroach’s movement. Kenjiro Fukuda researcher at RIKEN CPR leads the experiment. The team used Madagascar cockroaches which are approximately 6cm (2.4- inches) long. They attached the wireless leg-control module and lithium polymer battery to the top of the cockroach by using a specially designed backpack. A unit of the battery was necessary for sending and receiving these electrical signals therefore RIKEN team built a solar-powered module so that they did not need to return to a docking station or its handler when it ran out of power. According to Alper Bozkurt, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at North Carolina State University, the sound is the best way to find the survivors in the crumpled building. Scientists create remote-controlled cyborg cockroaches that can go under search and rescue missions

According to an <a href="http://news.sciencemag.org/brain-behavior/2013/10/cyborg-cockroach-sparks-ethics-debate">article in Science Now</a>, a new do-it-yourself project, called the RoboRoach, allows kids as young as 10 to create their own <keyword id="1079277" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Cyborg">cyborg</keyword> cockroach and control its movement. The $99 kits come with live cockroaches, a surgical kit, and tiny electronic hardware pieces.
The goal behind these RoboRoach kits is to get kids interested in neuroscience research and encourage them to pursue a career in the field. Cockroaches and humans have neurons that function in a similar way, so when you observe the cockroach responding to the signal from your phone, you are also seeing how human neurons respond to a signal. But some scientists and bioethicists are concerned this new product is unethical and may be encouraging cruel treatment of animals. 
The RoboRoach made its debut at the TEDx conference in Detroit on Oct. 2. Greg Gage and Tim Marzullo, the co-founders of <a href="https://www.backyardbrains.com/">Backyard Brains</a>, a small startup company of scientists and engineers, created the tiny backpack the cockroach wears and designed the kit that allows the user to attach all the pieces themselves. They funded the project with a <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/backyardbrains/the-roboroach-control-a-living-insect-from-your-sm">Kickstarter</a>, but and the cyborg cockroach will be commercially available starting in November.
How the cyborg cockroaches are created

Then the kids are instructed to sand down a patch of shell on the cockroach's head and superglue electrodes to the newly smooth area. Next, a groundwire is stuck into the cockroach's thorax - the area right between its neck and stomach. Finally, the kids must carefully trim the antennae and stick small silver electrodes in them that will receive the signal from the circuit that attaches to the cockroach's back and resembles a tiny backpack.

Amateur neuroscientists can steer the cockroach left and right after the surgery. Their movements are controlled by electrodes in their antennae, and they respond to directions from a wireless signal sent from a smartphone. The tiny backpack the cockroach wears communicates directly with its neurons by sending small electrical pulses.
After a few minutes, the cockroach will adapt to its cyborg fixture and will stop responding to the signals.
An ethical dilemma
Gage told <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="science">Science</keyword> Now that the <keyword id="6433816" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="insects">insects</keyword> feel little pain during the surgery. The kit explains how to take care of any wounds the cockroach might get during the attachment, and after the kids are done experimenting, the backpack can be removed and the cockroach can "retire" and still do regular cockroach things like eat and mate.

Jonathan Balcombe from the Humane Society University in Washington, D.C. told Science Now that "if it was discovered that a teacher was having students use magnifying glasses to burn ants and then look at their tissue, how would people react?"
Bioethicist Gregory Kaebnick compared the cyborg cockroaches to the Imperius Curse from the Harry Potter novels. He told Science Now that he isn't calling for an outright ban of the product, but still finds it unpleasant.
Normally, cockroaches use their antennae as feelers to navigate around any object that might be blocking their path. But when their antennae are trimmed and electrodes are stuck in, they lose that natural sensing ability and it is replaced with an electric impulse sent from a phone. There is little explanation on the Kickstarter page of any lasting effects this surgery has on the cockroaches.
Animal experimentation is fairly common and can be useful, especially in neuroscience where it is crucial to study a live brain to observe and understand the signaling that goes on between neurons and the rest of the body. Understanding the brain and the way neuron signaling works is the only way that treatments and cures for neurological diseases, like Parkinson's disease, will be discovered.

Even if an air purifier somehow manages to filter the tiny molecules, they will be simply re-released by the air purifier in a different location rather than eliminating and neutralizing them completely. The Neoplants have been modified at the DNA level to produce new enzymes that can metabolize air pollutants. For instance, Neoplants- Neo P1 turns formaldehyde into fructose and BTEX compounds into amino acids that plants can later use to produce proteins. <div type="image" title="Neoplants" msid="95507168" hostid="261" sizebytes="30326"></div> The process took four years of near-constant work, but in the end, the researchers created a plant that can metabolize four major indoor air pollutants, including toluene and formaldehyde. The real breakthrough came from modifying the microorganisms present in plants' roots. The researchers inserted genes from extremophile bacteria, which survive in the environment by eating toxic chemicals. Global population growth has therefore over time become increasingly concentrated among the world's poorest countries, most of which are in sub-Saharan Africa. In these countries, sustained rapid population growth can thwart the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which remain the world's best pathway toward a happy and healthy future. Even though population growth magnifies the environmental impact of economic development, rising per capita incomes are the main driver of unsustainable patterns of production and consumption. The countries with the highest per capita consumption of material resources and emissions of greenhouse gas emissions tend to be those where income per capita is higher, not those where the population is growing rapidly. Meeting the objectives of the Paris Agreement to limit global temperature rise, while achieving the SDGs, critically depends on curbing unsustainable patterns of production and consumption, according to UN. Yet, slower population growth over many decades could help to mitigate the further accumulation of environmental damage in the second half of the current century. Today, brands such as Realme, Amazefit, and Redmi offer some decent-looking and feature rich smartwatches in that price segment. But, when you are investing in a smartwatch under ₹5,000, your design expectation might be on the lower side; that might change with the new OnePlus Nord watch - the first wearable in the Nord range that features a minimalist design with fitness tracking features, all under a budget. This first smartwatch under the Nord brand offers features like a heart rate monitor, a plethora of fitness tracking features, a 60Hz AMOLED display, and much more. It is available in Midnight Black and Deep Blue colors. Amazon is offering an instant discount of 10% on using selected bank credit cards along with cashback and a no-cost EMI option. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="OnePlus Nord Watch - Overview" comment="subhead" text="OnePlus Nord Watch - Overview">OnePlus Nord Watch - Overview</cmsannotation> <div type="image" title="OnePlus Nord Watch" msid="95281467" hostid="261"></div> After using it for weeks, I can say that the highlight of the OnePlus Nord Watch is the design and touch response. It is one of the best-looking smartwatches in its price segment. It comes with a tiny dial on the right side, which is mostly for opening the main menu and going back. It's actually a design addition as it doesn't add any use case apart from a click - something that a simple button could do. Meaning, rotating it doesn't scroll through the interface. But I personally don't mind having it. OnePlus has opted for a 1.78 -inch square shape display which is large for the segment; the Redmi Watch 2 Lite and the Amazfit GTS 2 Mini feature a 1.55- inch display. The best thing about Nord Watch is that it doesn’t look bulky or oversized. It is slim and weighs a little over 50 grams, along with a band. The 1.78- inch AMOLED is neatly fitted in an alloy frame that adds a premium touch. It has a resolution of 448 x 368p along with a maximum refresh rate of 60Hz and 500 nit peak brightness, which makes it suitable for outdoor use. The 60Hz display is sharp, the animation feels smooth, making the smartwatch display look responsive and speedy. <div type="image" title="OnePlus Nord Watch" msid="95281508" hostid="261"></div> The watch comes with pre-loaded hundreds of watch faces to play around although only five watch faces remain on the watch. You will have to go to the N Health connection app for more options. The watch face collection is impressive as it includes some animated options, something worth noting if you like customising the face often. The smartwatch lacks an always-on display which is disappointing, but the rise-to-wake function works reasonably well. The colors on display are oversaturated, but I think that is a good move as it makes the display pop out and make it noticeable. Unlike phones, it’s a pro for watches. The Nord Watch comes with an elegance that enables it to blend in wherever it goes, from the gym to the boardroom to the cafe. It comes with an IP68 rating, making it dust and water resistance. It cannot survive underwater but can easily survive the rigors of a gym or a spell in the rain. The interface of the watch is simple, it is easy to navigate but looks inspired by Apple Watch (especially the main menu). You can access the control panel by swiping down - and it has quick access options like torch, settings, brightness, find phone, camera control and more. Swiping up brings the notification screen, and swiping right and left brings activity metrics like steps, heart rate and others. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Health tracking with basic smartwatch features" comment="subhead" text="Health tracking with basic smartwatch features">Health tracking with basic smartwatch features</cmsannotation> The OnePlus Nord Watch comes equipped with Bluetooth 5.2 for syncing your data. You can easily pair it with Android or iOS smartphones. It can perform basic smartwatch duties, showing call and message notifications. The watch has comprehensive health tracking covering all the basics, including stress, steps, calories, all-day heart rate, high and low heartbeat alerts, sleep tracking with blood-oxygen monitoring. <div type="image" title="OnePlus Nord Watch" msid="95281597" hostid="261"></div> All the stats feeds are displayed neatly, which makes it easy to understand the activity of your entire day. The OnePlus Nord Watch takes a step further by continuously monitoring your heart rate and built-in camera control which can be used after connecting to N Health app. Besides this, it comes with a weather update feature and 100+ sports modes, including running, walking, hiking, climbing, cycling, and more. <div type="image" title="N Health app" msid="95282097" hostid="261" sizebytes="13472"></div> <div type="image" title="N Health App" msid="95282107" hostid="261" sizebytes="11860"></div> The watch does not have automatic workout detection, but it is able to detect walking and running, which can be helpful for those who want to clock their basic running and walking. The watch is not capable of taking or making calls, recording media, or sending messages. I believe the device would suit athletes and health enthusiasts who wish to keep track of their health stats. <div type="image" title="OnePlus Nord Watch" msid="95281622" hostid="261"></div> The messages and social media notification feature is not up to the mark, as the notification appears without any display pictures. The built-in sleep tracker is a welcome addition as it records the wearer’s light and deep sleep intervals along with the middle of the night awakenings. <div type="image" title="OnePlus Nord Watch" msid="95281640" hostid="261"></div> The sleep time heart rate is also recorded along with the sleep data so that you can estimate your REM cycles. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Battery life" comment="subhead" text="Battery life">Battery life</cmsannotation> Battery life is undoubtedly the winning feature of this smartwatch. Draining the watch from 76% to 0% took about a week or so. I have been continuously using the wearable for eight days, with sleep tracking, call alerts, and notifications enabled. In short, the 230mAh battery capacity is extremely impressive for a watch of this kind. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Verdict" comment="subhead" text="Verdict">Verdict</cmsannotation> The OnePlus Nord Watch comes packed with a long-lasting battery and an array of sports modes, but its companion app leaves room for improvement. Despite its promising potential, it comes with some limitations - you can’t reply to messages, no always on, doesn’t let you receive phone calls, no voice assistant and others. While these features are more common on expensive smartwatches, I feel some of them could’ve been included to make it a better value proposition. Its biggest competitor is Amazefit GTS 2 Mini, which is priced at ₹5,999. But it has been sold at ₹4,999 for a very long time as part of seasonal sales. The Amazfit may not be fancy as the OnePlus, but it offers better software, Alexa, and more. That said, I would recommend the OnePlus Nord watch to those who want an affordable smartwatch with good looks and an array of sports modes. And if you have a OnePlus phone, it is even better. The tech companies are the ones being disrupted, from within and without. Revered founders like Mark Zuckerberg and <keyword id="191583" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jeff-Bezos">Jeff Bezos</keyword> are being openly called out, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-employees-push-to-get-inclusion-added-to-leadership-principles-2020-6">their famous leadership principles challenged</a>, by their own stock-optioned workers. After all, Cox parted with Zuck just last year over "artistic differences" involving the product direction. Amazon has come out of the coronavirus crisis stronger than ever, even if its reputation took a bit of hit. And given how extensive Amazon's empire is, from cloud computing to Whole Foods, there's likely to be a lot of ground to cover.The Bezos show on Capitol Hill is happening sometime this summer.
