Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday said that while government institutions, <keyword id="6368751" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="banks" source="Orion">banks</keyword> and <keyword id="114713" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="insurance-companies" source="Orion">insurance companies</keyword> were building greater awareness over cyber fraud, there was a need for people also to be more alert against cheats who were out to game the system. Speaking at the 'DATE with Tech' event in the national capital, Sitharaman said the government regularly examines public sector banks and the RBI checks its own systems in order to prevent <keyword id="70382" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cyber-frauds" source="Orion">cyber frauds</keyword>, in which victims are tricked via <keyword id="10861" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="phone" source="Orion">phone</keyword> or <keyword id="6369206" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sms" source="Orion">SMS</keyword>, while insurance firms assess their own systems as well. "India is in a transitional stage, we are at a stage where we are transforming from what was before to what is now, which is completely digital," Sitharaman added. She said there is worry on a small scale about people receiving arbitrary calls that trap them and cause them to lose money. "Those people who game the system probably are one notch ahead of us in terms of using and misusing technology. On that, there is a lot of work required. It is a never-ending game because technology is such an animal that keeps moving and racing much ahead of you. You have to be sure that you got the reins in your hand," Sitharaman said. The Union Minister said big organisations with systemically sensitive information should have sufficient technology and staff that are properly educated to firewall their systems on a daily basis. They also need to continuously assess whether the firewall is still capable of doing its job. She also highlighted India's achievement in developing a comprehensive digital infrastructure known as the "India Stack". This initiative, funded by public resources, integrates various digital elements, marking a significant leap in the nation's digitiaation journey which has been appreciated by other countries as well. Sitharaman said in the recent G20 Digital Public Infrastructure conference people were really surprised that a country like India could not only utilise the talent which is available with public funds and be able to scale it up at the ground level.

Banks, RBI keeping close watch to tackle cyber fraud: Sitharaman

Video game developer <keyword id="2850099" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="riot-games" source="Orion">Riot Games</keyword> said that the source codes for its popular video games '<keyword id="1189548" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="league-of-legends" source="Orion">League of Legends</keyword>' and 'Teamfight Tactics', or <keyword id="134063" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tft" source="Orion">TFT</keyword>, were stolen in a recent cyber attack, alongside the code for one of its anti-cheat platforms. "Over the weekend, our analysis confirmed source code for <keyword id="1910" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="league" source="Orion">League</keyword>, TFT, and a legacy anticheat platform were exfiltrated by the attackers," the company tweeted. Earlier this week, <keyword id="6388598" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="riot" source="Orion">Riot</keyword> disclosed the breach as a "social engineering attack" on Twitter, assuring players that an update would be provided after an investigation. The video game developer also received a ransom email from attackers, which the company says it won't pay. Moreover, the company assured that no player data or personal information was compromised, but acknowledges that the source code obtained by the attacker could result in new cheats. "While this attack disrupted our build environment and could cause issues in the future, most importantly we remain confident that no player data or player personal information was compromised," tweeted Riot Games. "Truthfully, any exposure of source code can increase the likelihood of new cheats emerging. Since the attack, we've been working to assess its impact on anticheat and to be prepared to deploy fixes as quickly as possible if needed," it added. The company further mentioned that "it will release a full report in the future detailing the attackers' techniques, the areas where Riot's security controls failed, and the steps we're taking to ensure this doesn't happen again". Ebay says that Cyber Monday and Black Friday set sales records for the site

Giridih, Deogarh, and Jamtara, three districts in the Indian state of <keyword id="6360371" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jharkhand">Jharkhand</keyword> have earned the moniker of cyber zones, not because they have transformed themselves with some digital revolution, but because they have thousands of cyber criminals in their households. Binsmi village alone in the Giridih district has 900 cyber crooks, from some 1,000 households that it has. The fact came into light recently after cyber cell officials of the Ahmedabad <keyword id="6356236" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Crime-Branch">crime branch</keyword> had to go to Binsmi to nab Mohammed Jilani Ansari, a cyber criminal who had cheated people across 15 states using a couple of cellphones. The local police help told them that they were about to enter the "Cyber Zone" of Jharkhand. "We had kept the operation top secret," a senior Ahmedabad police official told TNN. "However, when we were about to enter Binsmi village, a Jharkhand cop asked us whether we were looking for an online scamster, adding that he is not the only one in this cyber zone. Local police is unable to control these criminals since no case is registered against them. "They cheat people in other states," a cyber cell official said. Another official added that the team was shocked to know almost every house in these areas has a cyber crook. As per Jilani, the kingpin of the online fraud racket in Jharkhand is one <keyword id="4563824" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tiku-Mandal">Tiku Mandal</keyword>, leader of a gang of about 14 cyber cheats. "He provides them SIM cards and transfers money from their e-wallets to his bank account. He then gives them cash after deducting his commission," a cyber cell official said. Even after knowing the truth, it would be difficult to catch him since no one knows where he lives. "He visits his gang members once a week to collect money and then vanishes," the crime branch official said, adding, "We are planning a major operation in Jharkhand to catch him." Cyber Monday is on December 2, 2019 and we're rounding up all the best deals in one place - here's what you need to know

The number of cyber frauds in India has spiked as more people start using <keyword id="48346" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Mobile-banking">mobile banking</keyword>, <keyword id="285745" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="NEFT">NEFT</keyword> and <keyword id="6356014" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="RTGS">RTGS</keyword>, a recent study by PwC and ASSOCHAM states. 
 
"Whether it's financial transactions, customer experience, marketing of new products or channel distribution, technology has become the biggest driver of change in the financial services sector. Most financial institutions are therefore insisting on cashless and paperless transactions," the report said. 
 
The mobile frauds jumped from less than Rs 10 Crores in 2011-12 to around Rs 70 Crores in 2014-15. 
 
The most common kind of frauds include documentation frauds, diversion of funds, identity theft and cyber related theft targeting customers directly. In cyber frauds the customers were cheated through site cloning, hacking, debit card scheming, social engineering and computer viruses amongst others. 
 
"Mobile banking application being mapped to an incorrect mobile number: For bank customers who do not use mobile banking, an employee of the bank could attach an associate's mobile number to the bank account and install a mobile application on his mobile device. The customer's account is compromised by the associate and he or she does not get any notification about the same," the report said.

But even with the best systems in place, hackers can still easily break into a company's network if workers aren't also being diligent about security.There are two things that every employee should be doing to help keep their company safe from cyber criminals, Chris Young, general manager of Intel's Security Group, told Business Insider."Think before you click. That is the number one thing that every average employee in an organization can do," Young said.Humans are still the weakest link when it comes to an organization's security, according to a <a href="http://cts.businesswire.com/ct/CT?id=smartlink&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mcafee.com%2Fci-readiness&amp;esheet=51144708&amp;newsitemid=20150719005020&amp;lan=en-US&amp;anchor=Holding+the+Line+Against+Cyber+Threats%3A+Critical+Infrastructure+Readiness+Survey&amp;index=1&amp;md5=f1645b0e85737aa921d858aa289e2b69" target="_blank">survey</a> of security professionals by Intel published Monday. According to the report, successful attacks against companies most often stem from three things: User errors caused by lack of awareness, unofficial use of online services, and using social media sites at work.Basically, employees are clicking links they shouldn't be, which can give attackers a way in. One way attackers get in is through the inbox."Emails are the number one way that attackers are getting in," Young said. "They [cyber criminals] are crafting emails and attaching malicious files to those emails and their entry points into these organizations is often through tricking the average user or click on an email attachment and launch a malicious file."But these dangerous emails are not as easy to spot as they once were. Cyber criminals have gotten much better at disguising malicious email to make it look more legitimate. So employees need to be vigilant and ask questions about all of the email they receive that raises even the slightest suspicion, Young said."You should ask why am I getting the email? Why is there a file attached to it? Why am I being asked to click on it? And you should ask all of this before clicking," he said.The second big thing that employees should do to help keep their company safe is to make sure to report any suspicious emails or attachments. And if someone does click on a link or download a file that raises eyebrows, report it as soon as possible so that the company's security team can investigate quickly.<div><div></div></div>"There is a huge element that if you are good at quickly identifying a breach and are able to do something about it you can potentially contain it and possibly stop it before the attackers are able to achieve their goal," Young said. However, the total number of people that Hardy stalked is unknown.PC Kevin Anderson of Cheshire Constabulary, who was instrumental in Hardy's arrest after being assigned a case involving him in 2019, told the outlet: "We're going to have hundreds of victims."From 2009 to 2021, Hardy created numerous fake social media accounts, which he used to contact his victims and impersonate them to send abusive and explicit messages to their families, partners, and work colleagues.These messages would usually start with the phrase "Can I tell you a secret?" before making false accusations of cheating or backstabbing.<h2>Matthew Hardy was convicted on five counts of cyberstalking in 2022</h2>After Anderson's lengthy investigation, Hardy was arrested in February 2020 and charged in March 2021. During that time he continued stalking his victims, as well as finding new people to harass, per The Guardian.In October 2021, Hardy pleaded guilty to five counts of stalking involving fear of violence, and was sentenced to nine years in prison in January 2022.He's currently serving his sentence in a category B prison, according to the "Can I Tell You a Secret" podcast.Per <a target="_blank" href="https://www.chesterstandard.co.uk/news/19878271.stalker-matthew-hardy-created-fake-social-media-profiles-harass-victims/">The Standard</a>, a local news outlet, Judge Steven Everett told Hardy: "They had done nothing to harm you — most, if not all, did not know who you were. You chose them at random and they had to pay for it with sheer misery."<h2>Matthew Hardy had his sentence reduced after an appeal in October 2022</h2>In October 2022, three judges sitting in the court of appeal agreed Hardy's original sentence was too severe, and cut it from nine to eight years, per The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2022/oct/05/cyberstalker-matthew-hardy-who-harassed-women-has-sentence-cut">Guardian</a>. This was partly because of an oversight on a change to a stalking law, and because the sentence from the initial verdict was deemed too high. Hardy's lawyer, Sara Haque, argued that he couldn't fully comprehend the ramifications of his actions because he had Asperger's and autism.But Justice McGowan said that the original judge had already taken Hardy's neurodivergence into account during the first sentencing. "The appellant's medical condition — he suffered from Asperger's and autism — was clear and well documented. It led to him suffering from a lack of empathy, such that he was not always able to understand the impact that his behavior would have on others," she said. "The learned judge rightly reduced the term that he had in mind by 25% to allow for that mental disorder."Matthew's mother, Donna Hardy, appeared on an <a target="_blank" href="https://open.spotify.com/episode/6YdUhTizRsBLBroEzw1g9R?si=ea94a03529674138">episode of the podcast</a> in September 2022 and said that he intends to stay away from social media when he's released from prison."He has said to me, 'I don't want anything to do with social media ever again,'" she recalled. But the person eventually persuaded him to pay the deposit, the newspaper reported.The scammer told him that "no one would be cheated of $5" and that "this was a small thing", per the Singaporean newspaper <a target="_blank" href="https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/74-year-old-man-loses-70k-after-downloading-third-party-app-to-buy-roast-duck">The Strait Times</a>.However, within minutes of making the payment, Loh's phone screen went black and repeatedly rebooted for 30 minutes, prompting him to reach out to the scammer in a panic, per the newspaper.Loh's wife then realized something was wrong and contacted their daughter, who got her brother to call the bank to block their father's account, according to the outlet.But it was already too late.According to the newspaper, a bank employee told the family that the scammer had raised Loh's transaction limit and transferred about US$42,900 out of his current and savings accounts.Using Loh's DBS credit card, the scammer also obtained a credit advance of nearly $8,000, it reported."I couldn't believe the news. I thought: Why am I so stupid?" According to the Financial Times, phony recruitments are being run by scammers pretending to be employers on Microsoft-owned LinkedIn. "There's certainly an increase in the sophistication of the attacks and the cleverness," Oscar Rodriguez, LinkedIn's vice president of product management, was quoted as saying in the report. The platform has sought to block tens of millions of fake accounts in recent months, as regulators warn of a spike in job-related frauds. Cyber security company <keyword id="2426820" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="zscaler" source="Orion">Zscaler</keyword> recently described a scam that targeted job aspirants, where fraudsters approached people through LinkedIn's direct messaging feature InMail.
