It seems <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=telecom+operators">Indian telecom companies</a> are following the mantra ‘Higher the phone bill, better would be the service’. 
 
Telcos are deciding on customer service based on amount of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=phone+bills">phone bills</a> and will zero on a different levels. 
 
This move by telecom operators comes as a cost cutting measure and improving services for top-paying <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=subscriber+base">subscribers</a>. 
 "They would rather serve the top customers very well, because if they port out it will hurt the bottom line. They serve the bulk of the low-ticket, <keyword id="64889" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="prepaid">prepaid</keyword> customers, but it isn't even close to the same level of service and the wait time is longer," an executive, who serves telecom clients in a large Indian BPO company, told ET. 
 
Telecom providers also plan to come up with premium call-centres to serve consumers who at least pay Rs 3000 as phone bill every month. 
 
Reportedly, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=vodafone">Vodafone</a> RED plans for <keyword id="1016365" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Postpaid">postpaid</keyword> customers serve those consumers better who have a basic bill of Rs 1,299 per month. 
 
Likewise, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=airtel">Airtel’s</a> level starts at phone bill over Rs 3,000 a month. 
 "Our access times would be best in industry and the average wait time that a lower-paying customer would have would be between 12-15 seconds, as against 8-10 for a higher-paying one," Laxmi Rajan, national head-customer service at <keyword id="15492" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vodafone">Vodafone</keyword>, told ET in an email. She added that these were average wait times, and in peak hours it could vary on the higher said.

New Delhi, Mar 24 () The Department of Telecom on Tuesday reached out to state governments over difficulties faced by personnel of service operators in their movements due to lockdowns imposed by authorities to contain coronavirus outbreak. Telecom Secretary Anshu Prakash in a letter to chief secretaries of state and advisors to administrators of union territories has noted that telecom infrastructure is critical for maintaining communication, use of broadband, encouraging e-commerce and facilitating work from home during the ongoing restrictions to curb the spread of coronavirus. While telecom services have been listed within the essential services, employees maintaining the network and managing operations have complained of facing problem in their movement. "Instances are being reported where the local authorities have asked the personnel of the telecom service providers at network operation centres and call centres to shut down operations in the view of the restrictions. "Hence, it will be necessary that instructions reach the field level to permit personnel maintaining and providing telecom services to continue their work without interruption," the letter said. Employees of all organisations, that do not fall under list essential services, have been asked to work from home for business continuity using their phone and broadband connections. Prakash has requested to state governments and UT administration designate nodal officer with the name and phone number who can be contacted by the telecom operators and internet companies in the event of any difficulty. New Delhi, June 9 () Telecom operator Vodafone Idea on Tuesday said it has installed protective shields at its telecom retail outlets in Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) to keep customers and retailers safe amid the coronavirus pandemic. The shields prevent direct contact between the retail personnel and customers, while facilitating customer service and ensuring complete social distancing within the store premises, the company said in a statement. "With the resumption of commercial activities and opening of our stores, we are taking full care to ensure safe health of our retailers and customers in Delhi and NCR. We have installed protective shields at telecom outlets across Delhi-NCR to safely and efficiently deliver services to our customers through these outlets," Arvinder Singh Sachdeva, Operations Director at Vodafone Idea Limited said. Ericsson is positioning itself as an edge-computing partner for big network operators

New Delhi, Dec 2 () Rise in the price of mobile calls and internet rates is beneficial for customers, will boost government revenue collection and help in creating jobs by improving financial health of the sector, telecom industry body Cellular Operators Association of India said on Monday.
 Telecom operators Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea have announced to raise mobile calls and internet prices for prepaid customers by to 50 per cent from December 3, while Reliance Jio has said it will roll out new plans with 40 per cent higher rates on December 6. 
 "This (rate hike) is going to be in the benefit of customers, government and the industry. From customers' perspective, these tariffs will enable operators to do required and necessary improvements in the telecom network which has been languishing because of financial stress in the sector. In the upcoming short period, we should begin to see improvement in customer experience and services," COAI Director-General Rajan Mathews said. 
 This is the first hike in the past five years in the country's telecom space that was facing tariff war, with voice calls becoming almost free in 2016 and steep 95 per cent fall in data prices to Rs 11.78 per GB at present from Rs 269 per GB in 2014.
 From Tuesday, customers of Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea will have to shell out a minimum of Rs 49 to make calls, access the internet on mobile and stay connected for four weeks.
 Mathews said that due to a decline in mobile services rates, government revenues have also declined. 
 "We believe this will help the government in its collection at a time when collections of the government are being challenged," he said.
 According to official data, the telecom sector's gross revenue fell about Rs 41,000 crore in three years on account of a dip in mobile services rates.
 The telecom sector's gross revenue in 2016-17 was Rs 2.65 lakh crore, which had reduced to Rs 2.46 lakh crore a year later and then to Rs 2.24 lakh crore in 2018-19.
 Adjusted gross revenue, on which the government earns revenue, also declined by around Rs 46,000 crore during the same period.
 Mathews said the industry has been in doldrums and the hike in tariff will bring needed financial wherewithal to enable them to make investments.
 He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of Digital India requires over USD 100 billion worth of foreign investments into the country and the new tariff will help the sector in attracting foreign funds and help domestic banks in lending to the industry.
 "This will help operators to begin to hire again. We have been losing employees because of our inability to retain them. Also, because several of operators have exited the business. With this particular move, we see financial health improving. This means better remuneration for employees, better purchasing power to them," Mathews said.
 Telecom Sector Skill Council CEO Lt Gen S P Kochhar said the hike in tariffs will provide companies to invest in expanding optical fibre network and rolling out telecom networks. 
 "As per our estimates, four persons at every gram panchayat level will be required to maintain telecom networks. Laying fibre is a must for the country and it will create jobs on the ground. However, in the long term, we see a need for high-end jobs in the telecom sector and most of the manual jobs will either be automated or outsourced," Kochhar said. PRS HRS

Tariff hike good for customers, to boost govt revenue, create jobs: COAI

Indian telecom major, <keyword id="6354287" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharti-Airtel">Bharti Airtel</keyword> has announced to sell and lease back telecom towers from Africa’s largest telecom service provider, <keyword id="2641764" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="IHS-Holding-Limited">IHS Holding Limited</keyword>. The companies have entered into a ten-year long contract under which Airtel will sell 1,100 telecom towers located in Zambia and Rwanda. 
	 “The agreements will allow Airtel to focus on its core business and customers, enable it to de-leverage through debt reduction, and will significantly reduce its on-going capital expenditure on passive infrastructure in these African markets,” the company stated in its filing with the National Stock Exchange (<keyword id="6354646" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="NSE">NSE</keyword>). 
	 
	It further added, “For IHS, the acquisition is another major step towards the scale needed to provide shared telecoms infrastructure solutions in Africa. IHS customers, the mobile network operators, will benefit from lower operating costs, expanded network coverage and accelerated network roll out times, higher network capacity and improved quality of service. The consequences for the mobile subscribers will be more stable networks, higher network uptimes in which to make calls and a more ubiquitous service across the country”. 
	 
	The company, through the divestment, aims to increase the cost efficiencies of its operations in the industry. “We are delighted to partner with IHS, which has a proven track record in passive infrastructure management in Africa and look forward to working with them. This agreement will accelerate infrastructure sharing amongst operators and benefit customers in form of affordable tariffs and wider network coverage,” said Christian de Faria, managing director and CEO of Africa, Bharti Airtel. 
	 
	Commenting on the issue, Issam Darwish, executive vice chairman and Group CEO of IHS, noted, “We have been working with Airtel for many years. And we are very pleased to have signed our first Buy and Lease Back transaction with Airtel. The opportunity to expand our East African business bringing IHS’ market leading energy and infrastructure management practices to a wider market is an excellent opportunity.”

Airtel Enters Into Sell & Lease Agreement With IHS In Africa

Finally the government is upping its ante against mobile operators over call drops, which have off-late become an irritant for Indian mobilephone users. 
 
The government is mulling to direct operators to return the money charged for the dropped calls or throw in extra airtime to compensate for deficient services. 
Indian users, who have emerged as the world’s second-biggest market, behind China, are vexed due to call drops. 
 
The service quality has been deteriorating due to low call rates and fast adoption of internet on mobile. 
 
"The idea is to ensure that a customer is not made to pay for a deficiency on the part of an operator," a key official in the telecom ministry told Times of India. 
 
The official added that the ministry was "working aggressively" on the issue, especially as call drops became a regular phenomenon in choked networks of metros. 
 <keyword id="2419779" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="telecom-minister-Ravi-Shankar-Prasad">Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad</keyword> has been raising the issue of call drops time and again. "Call drops need to be minimised. Private operators need to reinforce their mechanism. I have directed officials in the telecom department to work on a disincentive architecture (for the operators) to address the issue," Prasad said while speaking at a conference on completion of one year of the NDA government. 
 
The official source told TOI that the ministry also planned to rope in sectoral regulator TRAI on the issue. 
 
"We plan to find a solution soon. It could be as early as the next six months," the source told the news daily, without giving further details. 
 
TOI reported that TRAI’s customer satisfaction survey related to mobile services failed to recognise the issue of call drops and poor broadband connectivity. 
However, as per experts, making operators pay for call drops may not be that easy. 
 
"There needs to be a mechanism in place to recognize when a call is dropped due to network issues. Also, there should be a way to confirm this so that the customer is 
aware of the deficiency," a telecom industry expert told TOI. 
 
Meanwhile, operators blame the lack of adequate spectrum and problems related to erection of mobile towers for the growing network congestion and call drops. 
 
CEO of Bharti Airtel, Gopal Vittal, said that they faced a stiff resistance in installation of mobile towers and needed more spectrum to handle the additional traffic on mobile networks. 
 
But some mobile operators have decided to address the issue and are compensating customers for dropped calls. 
 
TOI reported that Anil Ambani's Reliance Communications doesn't charge a customer for the outgoing mobile pulse where the call gets disconnected due to network problems. Similarly, Uninor gives a minute of free talk time within 24 hours for disconnections during a call.

New Delhi, Mar 31 () Vodafone Idea on Tuesday announced extension of validity on prepaid plans availed by low income customers using feature phones till April 17, and Rs 10 talktime credit to help such users stay connected during the lockdown to contain coronavirus pandemic.Telecom operator Bharti Airtel on Monday had announced an extension in the validity period of more than 8 crore pre-paid connections until April 17 as well as credited talk time of Rs 10 in these accounts.State-owned telecom operators BSNL and MTNL too have announced they will extend validity period of their prepaid mobile services till April 20 and offered Rs 10 additional talktime even after zero balance, to enable users, especially poor and underprivileged, to stay connected during the 21-day nationwide lockdown."The unprecedented situation arising from the outbreak of COVID-19 has created several hardships, especially for low income, prepaid customers using feature phones. To ensure that such customers remain connected amidst these troubled times, Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL)...today announced extension in validity of its prepaid plans, availed by low income customers using feature phones, till 17th April 2020," VIL said in a statement.The free extension in plan validity duration will enable millions of feature phone users of both Vodafone and Idea to continue to receive incoming calls, even if the validity of their plan expires earlier, the statement said.It has also anounced a talktime credit of Rs 10 in the account of nearly 100 million feature phone users to help them stay connected with their family and friends by making calls or sending text messages."This talk time is being credited in the accounts of all eligible customers, as fast as possible, over the coming days," the statement added.Commenting on the latest move, Avneesh Khosla, Marketing Director, Vodafone Idea said, "Our customers must remain connected without worrying about any disruption, especially in these troubled times.
