<br /> Laxmishanker Pathak and his wife <keyword id="4024287" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="shanta-gaury">Shanta Gaury</keyword> are not alive today but their story of how they built a food empire in Britain remains one of the most inspiring tales.<br />
<br />
Both started a food revolution of sorts and made Indian cuisine one of Britain’s favourites. Presently, their food brand-Patak’s- is Britain’s biggest Indian food brand.<br />
<br />
Ironically, when they moved to London in 1956, all they had was 5 euros.<br />
<br />
<strong>Early life</strong><br />
<br />
Laxmishanker Pathak’s family was living in abject poverty in a tiny village in Gujarat. They left India and moved to Kenya, where he married Shanta Gaury Pandit. Soon, they were blessed with four sons and two daughters. Due to the Mau Mau insurgency, they left Kenya and eventually arrived in London in 1956. The Mau Mau Revolt, also known as Kenya Emergency, was a military conflict that took place in British Kenya between 1952 and 1960. It involved Kikuyu-dominated groups summarily called Mau Mau, the white settlers, and elements of the British Army, including local Kenya Regiment, mostly consisting of the British, auxiliaries, and anti-Mau Mau Kikuyu.<br />

When the couple and their children arrived in London, all they had was £5 and a life insurance policy.<br />
<br />
After running from pillar to post looking for a job, Laxmishanker got a sweeper’s job in London. The salary he got was not enough to feed the family.<br />
<br />
<strong>Selling Indian food</strong><br />
<br />
Laxmishanker understood very soon that selling Indian food on London streets can help his condition. Soon, he and his wife started making Indian sweets and snacks in a rented basement flat in Kentish Town.<br />
<br />
The food became a rage in London and the word spread. Laxmishanker and his wife worked day and night cooking and selling the savouries around London’s Indian community.<br />
<br />
Their six-year-old son Kirit joined in, running small errands for them.<br />
<br />
By the late 1950s, they managed to open a small shop. However, the journey was not easy at all. Their neighbours complained, bankruptcy struck, but the family did not deter.<br />
<br />
Soon, they started selling pickles and chutneys too.<br />
<br />
<strong>How Patak’s was founded</strong><br />
<br />
In 1972, the British set up refugee camps for Ugandan Asians expelled by its dictator, Idi Amin. Lakshmishanker knew the refugees would be nervous and hungry.<br />
<br />
He persuaded the army authorities to let their company, Patak’s (he dropped the “h” from the company name to avoid confusing the British), feed them in lieu of printing and distributing information in Hindi to educate the new refugees about the British way of life.<br />
<br />
The business flourished.<br />
<br />
<strong>Cut to present</strong><br />
<br />
The couple passed on the business to their son Kirit and now along with his wife, he has added new dishes to the already prolific list.<br />
<br />
The Pathaks also established a charitable foundation and donated millions of pounds to health and education programmes in both India and Britain.<br />
<br />
Laxmishanker passed away in 1997 while Shanta died in 2010.<br />
<br />
But, Patak’s is still going strong. They supply curry pastes, chutneys, pickles, etc to nearly 90% of Britain’s 10,000 Indian restaurants. The company supplies curries, sauces, pickles and breads to more than 40 countries, even India. Patak’s has a turnover of around £55 million.

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="6762469" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="TikTok">TikTok</keyword> user Jaleel Taylor, who goes by <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@_jahkt">@_jahkt</a> on the platform, recently went viral for his videos of <keyword id="6181" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Food">food</keyword> preparation. </li><li>In several clips, he showed viewers how meals from the popular chain <keyword id="3049170" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="JD-Wetherspoon">JD Wetherspoon</keyword> were prepared in the pub's kitchen. </li><li>While some videos suggested that several menu items were prepared fresh, others revealed that certain dishes were frozen and microwaved. </li><li>As Taylor's videos racked up more attention, he said, his employer discovered his TikTok content.</li><li>JD Wetherspoon, he claims, has suspended him until an upcoming disciplinary hearing that will determine his employment status with the company. </li></ul><p>A content creator who says he's a chef at the popular UK chain JD Wetherspoon claims he's been suspended from his position in the pub's kitchen — all thanks to his viral videos revealing the company's food preparation secrets.</p><p>TikTok user <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@_jahkt">@_jahkt</a>, who goes by J Salsa on the platform and lists his name as Jaleel Taylor on a linked PayPal profile, began posting videos from the kitchen in early September.</p><p>In several clips, the 19-year-old showed viewers how he prepared some of JD Wetherspoon's popular dishes, including the traditional breakfast, southern fried chicken wrap, and paninis. </p><p>Taylor told <a href="https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/12676140/wetherspoons-chef-suspended-tiktok-more-kitchen-secrets/">The Sun</a> that he began filming to combat his boredom during a shift and eventually decided to share some of the footage online. </p><p>In just one week, Taylor's videos went viral, with several racking up over 1 million views. </p> <p>To many viewers' surprise, some of Taylor's videos revealed that several of the popular meals were prepared fresh rather than microwaved. </p><p>"Breaking the 'spoons stereotypes," the teenager quipped in the comments section where viewers expressed their shock.</p> <p>One video, however, offered a less flattering look at food preparation. </p><p>In the clip, Taylor prepares the chain's chicken <keyword id="55636" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Curry">curry</keyword> dish by placing a defrosted curry dish in the microwave and spooning the content of the prepackaged meal onto a plate. </p> <p>The chicken curry, Taylor claims, isn't the only dish that requires zapping in the microwave.</p><p>While eggs and meat were cooked fresh, curries and <keyword id="54935" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="pasta">pasta</keyword> dishes were frozen and microwaved, he <a href="https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/12676140/wetherspoons-chef-suspended-tiktok-more-kitchen-secrets/">confirmed to the Sun</a>. Certain meals, he said, were often defrosted overnight and then microwaved as necessary in the following days. Still, he stands by the quality of the food.</p><p>"They're quite nice even if they are microwaved," he told the outlet. </p><h2>Taylor's viral fame, ultimately, had its consequences. </h2><p>In a TikTok <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@_jahkt/video/6872013064540097794">video</a> posted on Sunday, Taylor said that his employer had come across the videos — and his recent press coverage – and he'd just finished a meeting with his managers to discuss his TikTok presence. Ultimately, he was suspended until further review. </p><p>"They were really calm about it, to be honest. They understood and I sort of explained my point of view, that it was a mistake and I didn't mean to cause harm to the company," he said in the clip. It brings together the finest players in the sport, produces some of the most compelling match-ups, and is contested at the prestigious All England Club in London - the same venue it has been held at since 1877.</p><p>If you don't know when it starts or how you can watch each match live online, fear not - Business Insider has your back.</p><h2>When does Wimbledon start?</h2><p>The tournament begins on Monday, July 2. The draw for the men's singles, women's singles, doubles, and mixed doubles is yet to be made so precise times are not known, but many familiar faces will all be vying for the coveted Wimbledon trophy.</p><p>Swiss veteran Roger Federer, Spanish favourite Rafa Nadal, and British player Andy Murray will all want to progress into the latter stages of the men's bracket, while world number one ranked woman Simona Halep will aim to preserve her status as the best women's player in the world.</p><p>However, 2018 Australian Open winner Caroline Wozniacki, 2017 Wimbledon queen Garbiñe Muguruza, and returning great Serena Williams will all be determined to scupper Halep's plans for further world domination.</p><p>The competition winds to a close with the women's final on Saturday, July 14 and the men's on Sunday, July 15.</p><h2>Why should I watch?</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The rivalry between clay king Rafa Nadal and grass master Roger Federer is amongst the most gripping in all of sport, greater perhaps than the competition between NBA greats Steph Curry and LeBron James and soccer stars Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.</p><p>Federer, who won the 2018 Australian Open, decided to skip the clay season so he could be as fit and as fresh as possible for Wimbledon. Will the gamble pay off? Nadal, for one, wasn't too happy about Federer's decision and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/roger-federer-avoiding-rafa-nadal-on-clay-2018-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">even accused the Swiss of avoiding having to face him on clay</a>.</p><p>As Federer is the top seed and Nadal is ranked second, the pair will not face each other until the final - but there are no guarantees they will make it that far. The competition is open and Novak Djokovic, Marin Cilic, and Milos Raonic could all make a sustained run in the tournament. She swashbuckled her way through all her challengers at the 2017 Australian Open, <a href="https://www.rollingstone.com/sports/lists/tom-brady-to-takeaknee-sports-most-memorable-moments-2017-w513507/serena-williams-wins-australian-open-while-8-weeks-pregnant-w513509" target="_blank" rel="noopener">even while eight weeks pregnant</a>, but took the rest of the year off to give birth to her daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr.</p><p>Williams is three WTA events into her 2018 comeback. She was outfoxed by sister Venus Williams at the Indian Wells Masters in March and stunned by Naomi Osaka at the Miami Open, but <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/serena-williams-french-open-injury-maria-sharapova-match-2018-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">performed well up until her withdrawal at the Round of 16 stage of the French Open</a>.</p><p>Wimbledon may well be where tennis fans witness Williams return to her best. The tournament has already provided a number of notable scalps, with 2017 Wimbledon men's champion Roger Federer eliminated at the quarterfinal stage on Wednesday, leaving the door wide open for his arch rival <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/roger-federer-wimbledon-plan-backfired-2018-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Rafa Nadal to challenge him as the Greatest Of All Time (GOAT) in tennis</a>.</p><p>Serena Williams marches on in the women's bracket and, after dumping Julia Görges out of the tournament's semifinal on Thursday, the American athlete will meet Angelique Kerber in the women's final on Saturday.</p><p>The men's and women's finals brings together the finest tennis players the sport has to offer, and these matches will be contested at the prestigious All England Club in London - the same venue it has been held at since 1877.</p><p>If you don't know when the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/category/wimbledon-2018" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2018 Wimbledon Championships</a> finals start, or how you can watch each match live online, fear not - Business Insider has your back.</p><h2>When does the Wimbledon final start?</h2><p>The tournament comes to a close this weekend. Williams remains in the tournament and will know more than anybody that winning Wimbledon will make a massive statement.</p><p>Williams only competed in nine WTA matches in 2017, winning eight and losing just once. She swashbuckled her way through all her challengers at the 2017 Australian Open, <a href="https://www.rollingstone.com/sports/lists/tom-brady-to-takeaknee-sports-most-memorable-moments-2017-w513507/serena-williams-wins-australian-open-while-8-weeks-pregnant-w513509" target="_blank" rel="noopener">even while eight weeks pregnant</a>, but took the rest of the year off to give birth to her daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr.</p><p>Williams is three WTA events into her 2018 comeback, but is yet to win a tournament. That may well change this weekend as she looks to claim her first major since returning from pregnancy. Once bustling meeting places where everyone from taxi-drivers to businessmen could eat together, Irani cafés are now a dying industry with few remaining today.</p><p>"Irani cafés were a vehicle for Muslims, Hindus, and Christians to eat at the table together," Shamil told You Can Now magazine in January 2016. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Alison Millington</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong>I ordered a "low calorie" meal on a recent transatlantic British Airways flight for free - and I'll never eat the standard economy food again.</strong></li><li><strong>There are a number of special meals you probably didn't realise you could order.</strong></li><li><strong>Ordering a special meal also means you get served first.</strong></li><li><strong>Scroll down to see BA's full list of special meals - but you can get them on most major airlines.</strong></li></ul><p><br />From <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-you-should-pay-for-the-exit-seat-on-a-transatlantic-flight-2018-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">booking a seat in the exit row</a> to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-airport-lounges-in-the-world-under-55-a-visit-2018-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">paying to use an airport lounge</a>, there are a number of things you can do to <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/make-an-economy-flight-feel-like-first-class-2016-12" target="_blank" rel="noopener">make your economy flight experience more bearable</a>.</p><p>On the return leg of a recent roundtrip flight from London to Toronto with British Airways, I decided, for the first time, to actually pay attention to my booking options and order a "special meal."</p><p>No, I'm not vegan or vegetarian, and I don't have any allergies - I simply wanted to test out something other the standard fare I've always wolfed down.</p><p>As it turns out, there are <a href="https://www.britishairways.com/en-gb/information/food-and-drink/special-meals" target="_blank" rel="noopener">plenty of options</a> you may not have realised exist - and they're free to order online as soon as you've confirmed your booking.</p><h2>Going 'low calorie'</h2><p>I opted for the "low calorie" option, since, as I do the London to Toronto flight often, I always land feeling like I've eaten far too much with hours of the day still to go.</p><p>According to BA, this option should be "low in fat and sugar with a reduced portion of protein."</p><p>The dinner, pictured above, was noticeably more fresh than the standard economy meal, which is always "four-course" on a long-haul flight.</p><p>I was given "Chicken Fillet with Spinach Crust," served with a bit of pasta in a plain tomato sauce and broccoli, along with a bean salad, some fruit, a whole grain roll, and a bottle of water.</p><p>The pasta dish may not look like much, and was relatively bland, but it tasted surprisingly fresh and didn't make me feel ill shortly afterwards.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Alison Millington</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>On a long-haul economy flight with BA, you get a "light meal" - breakfast, basically - before you reach your destination. </p><p>While everyone around me received a slice of sugary-looking cake, I was given some more fruit, apple juice, and a small muffin.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Alison Millington</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Another low-calorie option might mean a breakfast like turkey rashers, mushrooms, spinach, and baked beans, according to the airline.</p><h2>Your food arrives first</h2><p>While I was glad I'd ordered the slightly healthier food for the sake of my body, the best part of ordering a special meal is the fact that your food will always arrive first.</p><p>Cabin crew hand out pre-ordered food before they start with regular meal service - meaning you're often finished eating and already asleep before your neighbour has even been giving their choice of "chicken or beef."</p><p>And, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-you-should-pay-for-the-exit-seat-on-a-transatlantic-flight-2018-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">if you book an exit row seat</a>, the drinks service will also start in your row - meaning you can get your complimentary wine ahead of everyone else, too.</p><h2>There are plenty of other options</h2><p>If low calorie doesn't sound up your street, BA provided me with the full list of other special meals available on most long-haul flights - or on short-haul flights if you're flying business class.</p><p><strong>Here are your options, with some example dishes:</strong></p><ul><li><strong>Lacto-ovo-vegetarian</strong><ul><li>Does not contain meat, fish or seafood.
