Its genius founder<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/bill-gates">Bill Gates</a> has mellowed over the years and is now known for being a thoughtful philanthropist. But <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/after-talking-to-teens-last-year-about-anger-management-bill-gates-admits-that-some-of-his-famous-microsoft-tantrums-might-not-have-been-wise-2019-1">even he recently admitted</a> that some of his past behavior toward people that worked at Microsoft was "over the top."He was referring to his tantrums. And that culture of the impatient tantrum-ing jerk behavior filtered throughout the company. We've heard of stories over the years of male division heads warring with each other, trying to take each other down, well into the Steve Ballmer era of the company.When Nadella took over as CEO Microsoft in 2014, one of his missions was to shut that nonsense down. He led a giant round of layoffs, flattened the organization (getting rid of middle managers), and ditched the company's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsofts-old-employee-review-system-2014-8">controversial stack-ranking employee </a>review system. Stack ranking is a system in which employees are compared against each other instead of against their own goals. Today, all managers have <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-microsoft-execs-earn-their-bonuses-internal-memo-2019-4">diversity as part of their bonus-earning goals. </a>It's not a hiring quota but they are expected to build and maintain diverse teams.In a recent <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/microsoft-satya-nadella-build/">interview with Wired</a>, Nadella was asked about diversity and inclusion at the company. He said that the days of turning a blind eye to "brilliant jerks" who mistreat their teammates are long gone."That's done," he told Wired. "In 2019, to succeed, I hope anybody joining this industry starts by saying, 'I want to be great by honing my skills but I want to create energy around me where people of all genders and ethnicities can contribute.'"And yet, earlier this year news came to light of how some Microsoft women <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-employees-uproar-over-diversity-2019-4">still felt stymied in their careers</a>. The uproar caused others to jump into discussion forums <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-employees-uproar-over-diversity-2019-4">and decry some of the company's efforts to hire more women, minorities and other people</a> from under-represented groups.And it's not just women and minorities who wind up at the other end of such jerk behavior. Business Insider just talked to a newbie male programmer who got into programming after serving in the military. He was thrilled to join Microsoft and quickly quit the company after dealing with such behavior that threatened to immediately tank his career, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/male-diverse-microsoft-programer-runs-afoul-of-brilliant-jerks-2019-4">he told us.</a>Microsoft's is such a big and important company that its culture has ripple effects across the industry. Nadella deserves kudos for taking this on, telling programmers that being kind to your coworkers is expected behavior. Satya Nadella says the 'brilliant jerk' phenom in tech 'is done,' but it isn't

"Software is eating the world," as <a href="http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424053111903480904576512250915629460">venture capitalist Marc Andreessen famously said.</a>
He means everything from your automobile to your thermostat is now being run by software. And that means the people that write software are in high demand. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts there will be nearly 140,000 new software development jobs created before 2022, <a href="http://money.usnews.com/careers/best-jobs/rankings/the-100-best-jobs">reports US News,</a> which named "software developer" as the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/be-a-software-programmer-not-a-doctor-2014-2">best job in 2014</a>.
Consequently, companies looking to hire software developers often have to think outside the box to lure them away from their existing jobs, find a new survey of 1,400 full-time employed software engineers conducted by job hunting site <a href="http://www.glassdoor.com">Glassdoor.</a>
Here's what developers say it takes to hire them away:
1. They don't want to be contacted through LinkedIn.
Programmers are getting bombarded by recruiters on LinkedIn. The smartest companies are searching for programmers via sites where programmers share their work and work histories like GitHub and StackOverflow.
One told Glassdoor:
"I canceled my LinkedIn account because I was getting bombarded by recruiters. Now they have to find me through my blog, GitHub or StackOverflow accounts. Those recruiters that reach me now are more worth my time."
2. They want a lot of money.
Obviously, this is a job. So a great salary, bonus and benefits are still major carrots. 78% of respondents said they would leave their current employer if they were offered more compensation or better benefits.
In 2013, salaries for software programmers reached record levels. The average salary nationwide for a software engineer is $90,000, according <a href="http://www.indeed.com/salary?q1=Software+engineer&amp;l1=">to recruiting site Indeed.</a>
But in the hottest fields, especially in Silicon Valley, it is way higher, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/record-salaries-for-valley-programmers-2013-10">base salaries of $140,000 - $160,000 with bonuses </a>and stock options are common.
3. They want to have fun.
When enough money is being offered, programmers say they will take a new job based on a company's culture. Is it a fun place to work with great perks?
Some 52% of software engineers would even accept less money to work at a company with great culture.
4. They want to work on cool and interesting products and services.
Almost as many programmers, 51%, said they would accept less money to work at a company if it was building a particularly interesting product or service.
One told Glassdoor:
"If your company isn't attractive on its own because of its technology and engineering culture, I probably won't be interested in working there. Hearing about you from a recruiter -- rather than because of something amazing you've built -- simply cements that disinterest."

ICCR observes 70th foundation day; postpones mega event due to COVID-19

<ul><li>The <keyword id="63618" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institute-of-Management">Indian Institute of Management</keyword> (IIM), Calcutta, on Thursday, signed two Memorandum of Understanding with <keyword id="663053" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Carleton-University">Carleton University</keyword>, Canada and Montpellier Business School, France. </li><li>The move initiated under the Student Exchange Programme (STEP). </li><li>The five-year long pact with Carleton University will foster research programmes and collaborations. </li><li>To make India a ‘hub of higher education, the government will infuse ₹400 crores to build world class institutions in India.</li></ul>The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta signed agreements with two international universities — Carleton University of Canada and Montpellier Business School in France, the university said in a press release. The MoUs will initiate a Student Exchange Programme (STEP) which will focus on boosting teaching, research, and cultural understanding. “STEP is an integral part of <keyword id="78512" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIM-Calcutta">IIM Calcutta</keyword>’s internationalization efforts. It is aimed at providing IIM Calcutta students an opportunity to have learning experience from international environment,” Professor Prashant Mishra, Dean, New Initiatives and External Relations said. The five-year long agreement with Carleton University will foster research, collaboration, executive training and capacity building with scholarship programmes. “It is the intent of Indian Institute of Management Calcutta to establish precise academic and financial arrangements, and to support, as appropriate, the exchange of personnel between Indian Institute of Management Calcutta and Carleton University,” the university noted. The association between Montpellier Business School and Indian Institute of Management Calcutta will cater to postgraduate and doctoral students, along with teachers and research aspirants. As a part of this, the university will introduce joint executive development programmes, joint research programmes, joint conferences and workshops. “This helps them sharpen their practical skills, equips them with the ability to work in culturally diverse teams and contributes largely to their personal and professional development,” Mishra added. IIM Calcutta to exchange students with universities in France and Canada

Successful applicants will be responsible for watching and analyzing films and TV programmes that will be streaming on Netflix in the future. The tagger will deconstruct the films and programmes and describe them using objective tags. 
This "tagging process" is the first stage of the Netflix recommendation system and works in concert with advanced algorithms that generate highly personalized suggestions for every one of Netflix's nearly 50 million members, offering them an individualized set of titles matching their tastes. Other responsibilities may also include acting as a UK/IE cultural consultant, highlighting UK/IE cultural specificity and taste preferences.
Best part is that it's a geographically agnostic position:
The role will offer flexible hours working from home and would suit those with a passion for films and TV programmes, as evidenced by a degree in film or film history and/or experience directing, screening writing or filmmaking. Applicants with analysis experience (e.g. as a critic or work in development) would also be well suited.

Netflix Wants To Hire Someone To Watch Netflix All Day

This dysfunction has taken a real toll on the <keyword id="6354910" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="careers">careers</keyword> of women in tech. But, as one male programmer at Microsoft recently described to Business Insider, there's a deep-rooted cultural problem in the tech industry that extends beyond the treatment of women.Men get treated badly, too, if they don't fit into the "brilliant jerk" culture that still dominates many engineering teams, the programmer said.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image">Associated Press</div></div></div>"Right now, Microsoft's current CEO is trying to address the culture issue at Microsoft. I heard stories when Ballmer was the CEO and when Gates was the CEO. It was really toxic then but I'm not sure things have progressed," he said. While women and minorities suffer under a boys club mentality, "the same kind of bad behavior happens to men. They don't say sexist things to men, they do other things that are messed up," this programmer said.This person joined Microsoft as a new programmer from a non-traditional path: as an adult intern after serving in the military and putting himself through a coding bootcamp program. Coding bootcamps are schools that teach people to code in short, intense programs.In other words, he was not the classic young university intern.<h2>From thrilled to stymied</h2>After his bootcamp training, the programmer was excited to be accepted into Microsoft's LEAP program, he said. LEAP is an engineering internship for diverse candidates or those who come to programming via non-traditional means. They may have taught themselves to code, done a bootcamp or earned a traditional university computer science degree later in life. But despite their age or past work experience, they are entry-level programmers.During the 15-week internship, these programmers work on real Microsoft projects, they're <a href="http://www.industryexplorers.com/faq">paid $40 an hour on contractor status</a>, and they get medical benefits. If they do well, Microsoft may offer them a job.This programmer did well in his internship and was thrilled to land a full-time entry-level software engineer job, with a six-digit salary on an established engineering team. (We are protecting his identity because he was not authorized by Microsoft to speak to the press, but we have verified that he worked at Microsoft and came from the LEAP program.)Yet, after he joined as a full-time employee, instead of assigning him to a programming project he was given menial work like technical documentation that didn't involve any programming.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image">Elaine Thompson/AP</div></div></div>He figured he was paying his dues so he did the tasks assigned and in his spare time, continued work on his internship programming project, hoping to impress his boss with his programming abilities that way.But his boss ignored his volunteer efforts. "I'd send out email requests for approvals or resources for things to get done and they would get ignored," he described.A senior engineer that worked for a related team befriended him and after several months of watching him sidelined, the friend pulled him aside and warned him the menial work was "career suicide. There's no transfer of skills to anything you can do in programming. It's not something you can put on a resume," the programmer said.To advance in the tech world, a programmer needs to show programming projects, his coworker told him. A long period where he didn't ship any code could see him labeled as a pariah. Others may assume something was wrong with him or his skills. <h2>Stonewalled and humiliated</h2>The programmer went to his boss and asked, point blank, to be put on programming task. But the boss kept putting him off.Exasperated, the programmer told his engineering friend that he was giving up on Microsoft and was going to interview elsewhere.The friend, who had worked at Microsoft for many years, told him to wait and let him work the office politics behind the scenes, going above the boss's head to get him assigned to a programming task.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image">Microsoft</div></div></div>Managers at Microsoft are currently judged on how well they build and maintain diverse teams, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-microsoft-execs-earn-their-bonuses-internal-memo-2019-4">Business Insider previously reported. </a>When the friend told the team's leaders they were about to lose a newly hired LEAP intern, the manager knew it would reflect badly on himself, the programmer told us.The pressure worked and he was assigned a programming task. He was once again thrilled.But it didn't last long. The new task involved working closely with another senior engineer who was close friends with his boss. Instead of helping the beginner programmer do his new task, this friend-of-the-boss engineer stonewalled him rather than taking him under his wing.The programmer wasn't about to give up over that. He found others on his extended team willing to mentor him on the task. And after a couple of months, he had the new feature working well enough to show his progress to his boss. During a daily "stand-up" meeting - where everyone stands and says what they are working on - the programmer proudly said his project was ready to demo to someone.And to his shock, the boss immediately called the programmer into his office, along with several other senior leaders in the group, including the engineer that was supposed to be helping him. They held an impromptu demo, giving him no time to prepare.<h2>Under the bus</h2>During that meeting they peppered him with questions, critiquing his every decision. He explained his thought processes on the whiteboard.And then the guy that was supposed to help him criticized how he designed the program and implied the whole thing would need to redone from scratch."My heart drops to the floor. I'm like a really new programmer, and program design takes years to learn. This guy's job was to provide that design guidance and not only didn't he do that, but now he's critiquing me. I felt very much thrown under the bus in front of everyone senior," the programmer said. The engineers on the extended team who had befriended him and coached him were also furious at the whole situation, he said. "We ended up finishing the project. But after that meeting took place, I started interviewing at other companies," he said.And he immediately landed a better paying job at another huge tech firm in the area. (Business Insider confirmed this.)When he gave his two-week notice, his manager was surprised, and tried to talk him out of leaving. Despite all the stonewalling, the new programmer had been given good reviews, people generally liked his work and the boss didn't want the diversity black mark on his performance.But the programmer had had enough."They had brought me in under this diversity program, the LEAP program," he explained. "They didn't want to push me out, but to create conditions where I didn't feel empowered."Their attitude wasn't personal, he felt, but cultural. Among the team of about 40 senior engineers, which included men and women, there was a tight-knit group that acted "like a boys club." Discretionary bonuses as well as promotions could depend on how much this core group liked you, the programmer believed.The senior folks wanted their rank respected, and for subordinates to do what they were told, no questions asked, the programmer thought. Their system seemed to work well when hiring young people, fresh out of college with little life experience.But a sure-of-himself adult beginning programmer, like a former military man, didn't fit that mold."I've seen a lot of press about how women in particular, but also how minorities can get treated and marginalized. In my experience that can happen to anyone and it often does. They can tank you. You don't get fired. The report into abuse by TV personality Jimmy Savile says there is no evidence senior members of the BBC were aware of his conduct&#xa0;because&#xa0;the culture at the corporation had created&#xa0;"virtually untouchable" celebrities and staff fearful of passing on their concerns.The Dame Janet Smith review, released on Thursday morning, said eight informal complaints were made against the star DJ during his spree of abuse.Here are some of the key findings from Smith's&#xa0;review:<ul><li>The majority of the cases occurred in the 1970s.</li><li>The largest number of Savile's victims came into contact with him through popular music show Top of the Pops.</li><li>Savile's youngest victim was just eight years old.</li><li>His period of abuse took place between 1959 to 2006.</li><li>There were multiple figures at the BBC who could have stopped Savile.</li><li>Girls who complained were "seen as something of a nuisance" by the BBC.</li></ul><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>The report, conducted at a cost of £10 million, also found that Savile was responsible for eight&#xa0;rapes - two of which were against males.<a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/tony-blackburn-sacked-by-bbc-2016-2" target="_blank">BBC DJ Tony Blackburn was sacked on the eve of the report's release</a> and has promised legal action.One extract from the report states: &#xa0;"After two and half years spent working on this Review, I have found no evidence that any BBC employee above producer level could stand accused&#xa0;of complicity in Savile's crimes in connection with his work for the BBC. Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> on Friday told the UN Sustainable Development Summit that he represents a culture that refers to the earth as "mother" and that India in the next seven years will create 175 GW of renewable energy capacity.

Story behind the Name 
Sachin: It goes back to July, 2012. 
 
The word ‘hacker’ appealed to us. There’s a negative connotation to it now, but the word originally means a programming expert. It’s a culture that believes in getting things done and solving problems in minutes and getting products ready in months. 
 
The Use-Cases 
Vivek: The programming community in India is very fragmented. Our experience has given us the knowledge and expertise to figure who to reach out to for a certain use-case. 
 
For companies like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Wal-Mart+Labs&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Wal-Mart Labs</a>, we offer access to the widest range of developers. This gives them at least 10x more reach. 
 
Sachin: We’ve gone from being a recruitment company to a developer’s outreach. IBM Bluemix works with us to hire developers, GSK crowd-sourced a mobile game, and companies also organize <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=hackathons&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">hackathons</a> to build their talent pipeline. 
 
Biggies Catching Up 
 
Vivek: Even bigger companies want a culture where every developer is thinking independently and implementing fast. It has helped companies like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Wipro&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Wipro</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Infosys&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Infosys</a> service customers better and identify smart people in their teams. 
 
The company has conducted 120 hackathons for 48 large and small enterprises. With over $32 million being doled out in offers over 951k coding assessments, HackerEarth aims to grow its revenue from about $130,000 a month now to $400,000 a month by the end of the year. 
 
Pocket Pinch: 
The cost for setting up a hiring challenge will be anything between Rs. 35k – 1.5 lakhs. Cost of per hire ranges from Rs. 60k - 2 lakhs based on the salary and the profile involved.

Unfortunately, while ‘<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Social_Network">Social Network</a>’ or ‘<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silicon_Valley_(TV_series)">Silicon Valley</a>’ would have you believe there’s Beer or Tequila involved, Sachin says it’s nothing as boozy as Hollywood would want you to believe. 
 
“That’s still limited to the movies, at least in India. It’s a more informal environment, and people are often up all night. However, we haven’t had anything with liquor involved. Not sure if that happens in the Valley as well”, Sachin concludes.

Efforts are on to provide a facilitation centre, hospitality &amp; protocol services, transportation, boarding and lodging, procurement of materials &amp; equipment, technical requirements, press publicity, a cultural programme, food, maintenance of snow slopes, area domination, security, medical camps, event management and other arrangements. Divisional Commissioner, <keyword id="6354495" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="kashmir">Kashmir</keyword>, Baseer Ahmad Khan on Wednesday chaired a high-level meeting of officials to review all arrangements put in place for the event. He directed officers concerned to set up round the clock control rooms at Srinagar, Tangmarg and Gulmarg in which officers from PHE, PDD, Medical, Police, SDRF and the Magistrates concerned will be deployed to monitor all activities with backup plan till the culmination of the mega sporting event. Besides, he will establish medical camps at various locations with doctors and other staff with medicine and ambulances. In case of any exigency, the department will initiate immediate measures for particular case.

The announcement comes close on the heels of the carrier placing an order to buy 470 aircraft from <keyword id="6357957" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="boeing" source="Orion">Boeing</keyword> and Airbus, including 70 wide-body planes. In a release on Friday, Air India said it "plans to hire over 4,200 cabin crew trainees and 900 pilots in 2023 as the airline adds new aircraft and rapidly expands its domestic and international operations". Between May 2022-February 2023, the airline hired more than 1,900 cabin crew.
