With <keyword id="6357017" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="cryptocurrency">cryptocurrency</keyword> gaining popularity, there has been a <keyword id="6405795" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="rise">rise</keyword> in cases this year.</li></ul>Pushback from regulators isn’t the only unwanted attention that the <a href="https://wazirx.com/signup?invite=2kpah6gr&amp;utm_source=business-insider&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=microsite">cryptocurrency</a> industry has drawn over the past six months. It seems that the half-a-year-long bull run also drew cybercriminals towards the industry, and revived a kind of malware that has been all but dead for about two years now.<br /><br /><keyword id="6063616" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="cryptojacking">Cryptojacking</keyword> is a specific type of scam that allows attackers to install malware — often called miners — on users’ devices. These miners utilize your device’s resources in the background to mine cryptocurrency. They used to be popular during the 2017-18 period, but became mostly irrelevant over the past two years or so.<br /><br />However, according to a report by security firm Kaspersky, cryptojacking cases have risen in the first quarter of 2021. The report shows that 432,171 users encountered miners on their devices in Q1, 2021. The number was pegged at 187,746 in January this year and 200,045 in March. <br /><br />The number of unique modifications to miners also increased by over four times, from 3,815 to 16,934. Unique modifications are changes to a miner’s code in order to mine a new kind of currency or adapt to new systems. Researchers at Kaspersky saw 23,894 new modifications to miners in the first quarter of 2021.<br /><br />Kaspersky isn’t the only one who noticed the rise either. According to Japanese tech services provider, <a href="https://hello.global.ntt/en-us/insights/2021-global-threat-intelligence-report">NTT</a>, crypto miners made up 41% of all detected malware in 2020, something that tech firms haven’t seen in a long time. Essentially, the boom in <a href="https://wazirx.com/signup?invite=2kpah6gr&amp;utm_source=business-insider&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=microsite">cryptocurrency prices</a> drew more users to the industry, which led to more transactions and trading and hence increased the need for crypto mining.<br /><br /><strong>What is crypto mining?</strong><br /><br />In the world of cryptocurrencies, mining is the process that authenticates all transactions and maintains the blockchain ledgers. Cryptocurrency transactions are dependent on mathematical equations that need to be solved, and the computer that solves an equation the fastest will get credit for authenticating a particular transaction. This credit comes in the form of new cryptocurrencies, which become a miner’s earnings.<br /><br />In the past few years, most of the world’s crypto mining needs were handled by large mining farms. These are data center like operations that produce more computing power than a thousand mobile phones or computers. According to some estimates, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/cryptocurrency/news/chinas-war-against-crypto-continues-as-weibo-bans-at-least-a-dozen-popular-cryptocurrency-accounts/articleshow/83309874.cms">over 70% of the world’s Bitcoin mining</a> is done in China. The country is known to be big for Ethereum and other currencies as well.<br /><br />The fact that mining farms could provide this much power meant that miner software became irrelevant in a way. An attacker would have to infect tens of thousands of computers to make any money from a miner malware. This, along with the fact that security and tech firms were actively tracking them, led miners to die out. <br /><br /><strong>Why are cryptojacking <keyword id="385583" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="scams">scams</keyword> dangerous?</strong><br /><br />At this point, you might be wondering why a miner scam is dangerous in the first place, right? After all, all they do is use some of your computer’s power right? No stealing data, no spying on you, and all those other things that people find scary?<br /><br />Well, these scams can use up <a href="https://www.livemint.com/market/cryptocurrency/cryptojacking-attacks-rise-as-hackers-try-to-exploit-boom-11622892050042.html">as much as 70%</a> of your computer’s (or mobile phone’s) resources, slowing them down quite noticeably. Cryptojacking scams are on the rise once again, after declining for two years

<ul><li>Researchers at Avast have detected a new cryptojacking malware that’s targeting gamers across the globe, including India.</li><li>Dubbed Crackonosh, the malware is assumed to have a Czech origin.</li><li>The hackers behind the scam have made over $2 million in <keyword id="3626967" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Monero">Monero</keyword> (XMR) through the scam.</li></ul>Grand Theft Auto V, NBA 2K19, and Pro Evolution Soccer 2018 players are being duped into mining for cryptocurrency — and they may not even know it. <br /><br />In their quest to profit off of the currency rage around <a href="https://wazirx.com/signup?invite=2kpah6gr&amp;utm_source=business-insider&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=microsite">cryptocurrencies</a>, hackers have now turned their attention to gamers as per new research by antivirus software make <a href="https://decoded.avast.io/danielbenes/crackonosh-a-new-malware-distributed-in-cracked-software/">Avast</a>. The report highlights that cybercriminals are spreading malware by duping people into downloading games that are laced with malware. <br /><br />Avast has been able to catch over 800 cases on a daily basis. The boom in the <a href="https://wazirx.com/signup?invite=2kpah6gr&amp;utm_source=business-insider&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=microsite">crypto market</a> has not only created room for new traders but also more crypto miners. The rationale is simple, more trading means more transactions, which means more miners, because they’re the ones who authenticate the transactions.<br /><br />China’s recent crackdown on crypto mining is forcing big mining farms to look for new locations where they can set up their business. For instance, two of the largest crypto miners in the world — Huobi and BTC.TOP — <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/cryptocurrency/news/cryptocurrency-miners-in-china-may-move-their-operations-overseas-as-beijing-intensifies-its-crackdown/articleshow/82910323.cms">announced last month</a> that they’re looking for options elsewhere. <br /><br />“In the long term, nearly all of Chinese crypto mining rigs will be sold overseas, as Chinese regulators crack down on mining at home,” Jiang Zhuoer, the founder of BTC.TOP, wrote on the Chinese social media platform Weibo. <br /><br />BTC.TOP is a crypto mining pool, a common occurrence in the industry where multiple miners combine their resources to make one big mining operation. Hashcow, which runs 10 mining farms in China, had also announced that it will stop operations in the country.<br /><br />China accounts for over 70% of all Bitcoin mining in the world, and one of the reasons for this was cheap energy. If Paraguay and El Salvador can promise companies the same, they could really capitalize on this situation. According to a <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/05/26/major-china-bitcoin-mining-hub-lays-out-harsher-crackdown-measures.html">project</a> by the University of Cambridge, called the Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index, Bitcoin mining consumes about 112.57 terawatt-hours of energy every year, which is more than the total electricity consumption of some countries.<br /><br /><strong>Seeking crypto business</strong><br /><br />But El Salvador and Paraguay aren’t the only countries that are vying for a piece of the crypto pie. In fact, Argentina has <a href="https://www.scmp.com/tech/tech-trends/article/3135558/bitcoin-mining-booms-argentina-thanks-cheap-electricity-and">seen a boom</a> in crypto mining recently, on the back of cheap availability of electricity. <br /><br />The fact that the crypto mining process consumes a lot of energy is no secret, and much of this is required just to cool down the farms. As a result, many companies are considering moving to cooler countries too. After El Salvador, Paraguay considers Bitcoin adoption

Mumbai, July 13 (IANS) Public Cloud security incidents hit India the hardest in the last year with 93 per cent of the country's organisations experiencing such an issue, said a survey of 26 nations by cybersecurity company Sophos on Monday.<br /><br />The cybersecurity incidents that Indian organisations suffered most included ransomware (53 per cent) and other malware (49 per cent), exposed data (49 per cent), compromised accounts (48 per cent), and cryptojacking (36 per cent), said the report titled "The State of Cloud Security 2020"<br /><br />Europeans suffered the lowest percentage of security incidents in the Cloud, an indicator that compliance with General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) guidelines are helping to protect organisations from being compromised.<br /><br />India is yet to enforce a data protection law.<br /><br />"Ransomware, not surprisingly, is one of the most widely reported cybercrimes in the public Cloud," Chester Wisniewski, Principal Research Scientist at Sophos said in a statement.<br /><br />"The recent increase in remote working provides extra motivation to disable Cloud infrastructure that is being relied on more than ever, so it's worrisome that many organisations still don't understand their responsibility in securing Cloud data and workloads," Wisniewski said.<br /><br />"Cloud security is a shared responsibility, and organisations need to carefully manage and monitor Cloud environments in order to stay one step ahead of determined attackers."<br /><br />Accidental exposure continues to plague organisations, with misconfigurations exploited in 44 per cent of reported attacks on Indian organisations.<br /><br />Additionally, more than 55 per cent Indian businesses reported that cybercriminals gained access through stolen Cloud provider account credentials, said the report.<br /><br />Despite this, only 29 per cent said managing access to Coud accounts is a top area of concern.<br /><br />With 76 per cent organisations using the public Cloud, detection and response is leading Cloud security concern for Indian IT managers while data security remains a top concern globally for businesses.<br /><br />The report is based on an independent survey involving more than 3,500 IT managers across 26 countries in Europe, the Americas, Asia Pacific, the Middle East, and Africa that currently host data and workloads in the public Cloud.<br /><br />--IANS<br /><br />gb/na

The hack, which was brought to Tesla's attention by the cybersecurity startup RedLock, also reportedly exposed some of Tesla's proprietary data related to mapping, telemetry, and vehicle servicing.</p><p>RedLock discovered the hack after it found an IT administrative console that didn't have a password, but the company was unable to determine who initiated the hack or how much cryptocurrency was mined. According to Fortune, Tesla paid RedLock over $3,000 as part of its <a href="https://bugcrowd.com/tesla">bug bounty program</a>, which rewards people who find vulnerabilities in the company's products or services that could be exploited by hackers. </p><p><span>"We maintain a bug bounty program to encourage this type of research, and we addressed this vulnerability within hours of learning about it," a Tesla spokesperson told Business Insider in an email. "The impact seems to be limited to internally-used engineering test cars only, and our initial investigation found no indication that customer privacy or vehicle safety or security was compromised in any way."</span></p><p><span>Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the retailer's cloud storage division, and it has become one of the company's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-web-services-cloud-online-shopping-profits-chart-2017-5?r=UK&amp;IR=T">most profitable services</a>. But AWS accounts, along with business and government websites and servers, have become vulnerable to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/hackers-broke-into-amazon-cloud-to-mine-bitcoin-2017-10">"cryptojacking"</a> schemes in which hackers <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/government-linked-websites-across-the-world-have-been-shut-down-as-hackers-were-using-them-to-mine-cryptocurrencies-2018-2">break into them</a> to mine cryptocurrency, which has become increasingly lucrative in the past year.</span></p><p>The hack also demonstrated one of the primary concerns auto companies face as they race to introduce the first autonomous vehicles and ride-sharing services. Having proprietary data or technology exposed to competitors could be the difference between being one of the first entrants into the self-driving car market and playing catch-up. </p><p>That difference could end up costing companies billions of dollars, which is why Waymo <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/uber-and-waymo-trial-on-monday-trade-secret-dispute-levandowski-2018-2">sued Uber</a> after alleging that Anthony Levandowski, a former Uber engineer who joined the company after working at Waymo, stole confidential information from Waymo that was used by Uber to develop lidar sensors for self-driving vehicles.
