Seeded in 2018 during the National Conference for Women in Police, the move aims to create better work conditions for ‘mahila battalions’ in the CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force). The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has allocated ₹21 million to its ‘gender sensitive’ budget. It aims to install nearly 288 pad vending machines and an equal number of disposal units for sanitary napkins. As many as 8,000 women are a part of India’s <keyword id="64987" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Paramilitary-forces">paramilitary forces</keyword>. In fact, the CRPF will also install nearly 800 steel stands for drying clothes, especially for the women personnel. The Home Ministry estimates a cumulative cost of nearly ₹300,000 for each sanitary pad vending machine, disposal unit and drying stand. “The sanction will help the force in ensuring better living and operating conditions for the over 8,000 women personnel who are in combat,” the ministry noted in the official sanction orders. The Defence Research and Development Organisation(DRDO) and CRPF also have plans to introduce women protectors for women in the battalion. Overall, the CRPF has over <a href="http://www.newindianexpress.com/nation/2019/jul/21/in-a-first-crpf-to-install-sanitary-pad-dispensers-for-women-in-combat-2007290.html">300,000 personnel</a>, including several employed in conflicted or naxal areas of the country such as Jammu and Kashmir. The ministry also said that the same will be used in other Indian forces as well. The idea to create a work environment for women in ‘Khaki’ was originated on the sidelines of a study on the issues of health, privacy and challenges faced by women personnel at workplace. The study was conducted by Renuka Mishra, IPS officer and additional director general (ADG) in Uttar Pradesh. The survey painted a dismal picture of women in police forces and highlighted their struggles to keep up with their jobs. Some of them carry on without drinking water so as to avoid urination as workplaces lack basic necessities. In fact, the women personnel dispose used napkins in a pit. "The women personnel said it was difficult for them to dry their inner wear due to lack of facilities. Clothes remain damp as they did not dry due to lack of sunlight, and led to urinary tract infections in women," Mishra told news agency PTI. In July, it had also launched the first mobile phone tower in Dantewada, Chhattisgarh. It also enabled internet facilities, and provided computers to students--a move which was well appreciated by its residents. “Padhega Bastar, tabhi toh badhega Bastar (Education in Bastar will lead to development),” Moses Dhinakaran, Directorate General of CRPF tweeted. The Bastar district in Chhattisgarh is prone to Maoist activities.

It recently provided smart TVs and DTH connections to a girls hostel in Dantewada, Chhattisgarh. India’s paramilitary forces organise digital classes in naxal affected areas

Raipur, May 19 () Women self-help groups in Chhattisgarh have so far produced over 39 lakh face masks and nearly 10,000 litres of hand sanitisers to cater to the increased demand of these items following the coronavirus outbreak, an official said on Tuesday. Nearly 7,625 women from 2,165 self-help groups (SHGs), associated with the government-run Chhattisgarh State Rural Livelihood Mission, are engaged in preparing masks in 27 districts of the state since last two months, the mission's Chief Operating Officer Alice Lakra told . The process was started in the last week of March, just after the lockdown was enforced to contain the spread of coronavirus. Till Monday, these SHGs have made 39,08,811 masks. Out of this, maximum masks were manufactured in Koriya district (4,10,290), followed by Rajnandgaon (3,74,943), Bemetara (3,50,705) and Gariaband (3,12,550), Lakra said. These masks are being supplied to the health department, municipal corporation, police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and other government departments, and also being sold in open markets in several places at affordable prices of Rs 10 to Rs 20 each, she said. Besides, the masks are being provided to labourers engaged in work under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and forest dwellers involved in tendu leaves collection, she said. "Of the total produced masks, so far 36.37 lakh masks worth Rs 4.52 crore have been sold," Lakra said. These cloth masks are three-layered as per the World Health Organisation (WHO) standard and washable, she said. "The production is being done on the basis of requirement orders placed by various departments. Besides, we are also planning to tie-up with some leading medical and grocery stores in all districts to ensure easy availability of masks to the public," Lakra said. She also informed that 9,964.5 litres of sanitisers have been manufactured by 44 SHGs in 13 districts. Of the total quantity, 7,690.35 litres of sanitisers worth Rs 32.07 lakh have been sold till Monday, she said. The SHGs are also making pattal and dona (disposable plates and bowls made of dry leaves and paper), and supplying them to quarantine centres for serving meals to migrants who are kept there as a precautionary measure before being allowing to go home, she said. "The SHGs are contributing in a major way in the battle against coronavirus. They are not only making protective items but also making people aware in their vicinity about the importance of personal hygiene and social distancing to avoid transmission of coronavirus, she said. Ahmedabad, Apr 12 () Gujarat has received fivecompanies of paramilitary forces to enforce the lockdown inplace for the coronavirus outbreak, and they will be deployedin Ahmedabad, Surat and Vadodara, state Director General ofPolice Shivanand Jha said on Sunday.These five companies comprise two each from the BorderSecurity Force and the Central Industrial Security Force, andan all-women one from the CRPF, he said."Two each will be deployed in Ahmedabad and Suratwhile one will be stationed in Vadodara. "What we have found after preliminary analysis is that this is a watershed moment for the CAPFs like few years ago when women were recruited for the first time in the constabulary and officer ranks." "The transgenders will add to the rich profile of these forces. Also, if uniformed forces will not lead by example how can we expect other sections of the society to shed old inhibitions?," he said. It was analysed that there can be issues of acceptance among the troops in the initial phases but like women gelled well as colleagues and commanders in these forces, the transgenders too can, he said. Another officer said the forces have analysed that they will not have to prepare any additional infrastructure for transgender officers as all existing living units and toilets are gender neutral. "If a person of any gender has, what we call officer-like qualities (OLQ), then they can join the CAPFs on that merit alone. Also, all aspirants need to clear specific medical, mental and physical benchmarks for being recruited as officers in combat to lead their troops," he said. A third officer said the forces have conducted analysis of some civil organisations who have recruited transgenders and the feedback has been encouraging. "The recommendations of some of the CAPFs have been received and a decision will soon be taken after analysis. Once the gates are opened for any category of candidates, securing the job is absolutely on merit that is analysed by way of a written exam, physical tests and interviews," a senior home ministry official said. Once approved, the UPSC will advertise the option of ticking the transgender box, like male and female, in the gender column of the CAPFs (ACs) exams along with the estimated strength of officers required by each force this year, he said. The Ministry of Personnel, early this year, had also asked all ministries and departments to modify relevant examination rules to include 'transgender' as a separate category of gender for central government jobs. The legislation notified last year provides that no establishment shall discriminate against transgender persons in matters relating to employment, recruitment, promotion and other related issues.
