India’s electric charging infrastructure is far away from reaching the critical mass. Yet, that is not stopping auto makers from announcing and launching electric cars. The Indian government has set a <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/auto/car-news/government-finally-wakes-up-sets-a-realistic-goal-of-30-electric-vehicles-by-2030-from-existing-100-target/1091075/">target</a> to turn 30% of total new vehicle sales electric by 2030. At the Auto Expo 2020 in Greater Noida, auto makers revealed their plans for upcoming electric vehicles and showcased concept vehicles for the future. Mahindra, MG, Tata and Volkswagen are among the companies that revealed their plans for upcoming electric vehicles in India. Top upcoming electric cars in India Mahindra eKUV100 The Mahindra eKUV100 was launched at the Auto Expo 2020 with a price tag of ₹8.25 lakh, making it the most affordable EV in the country. It looks identical to its petrol variant and was first showcased during the Auto Expo 2018. The eKUV100 is powered by a 40 kW electric motor that can develop 53 bhp and 120Nm of peak torque. It is powered by a 15.9 kWh lithium-ion battery that is claimed to provide a range of 150 km on a single charge. <keyword id="8725394" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="mahindra-exuv300">Mahindra eXUV300</keyword> - a long range vehicle The Mahindra eXUV300 is next in line in the electric vehicle segment from the company and is a tad more premium than the eKUV100. It is built on the existing XUV300 platform and is expected to be available in 2021. The car was showcased at the Auto Expo 2020 in two variants – standard and extended range. It is powered by a 40 kWh battery capable of delivering a 300 km range on a single charge. The battery has been developed by Mahindra Electric in association with LG Chem. MG <keyword id="8723870" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="marvel-x">Marvel X</keyword> - the showstopper The MG Marvel X was the company’s showstopper at the Auto Expo 2020. The company has claimed that it is the world’s first mass produced vehicle with integrated internet, electric, and level-3 autonomous driving capabilities. It is currently sold as the Roewe Marvel X by the company’s parent SAIC group. It is powered by a 52.5 kWh battery that can be charged in 8.5 hours and a single charge will provide a range of 400 km. The three motors on the car can develop a combined output of 302hp and 665Nm of peak torque. It has a top speed of 170 kmph and can do 0-100 kmph in 3.1 seconds. The company has not revealed when the car will be launched in India and it will likely depend on how the MG ZS EV performs in the country. <keyword id="8723718" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mahindra-Funster">Mahindra Funster</keyword> Concept - a thrilling roadster The Mahindra Funster Concept was the highlight of Mahindra at the auto show. It has been designed by its Design Studio in Mumbai. It is a convertible roadster electric vehicle concept that has a top speed of 200 kmph. As per Mahindra, the Funster is "a thrilling roadster electric concept with a playful convertible mode, nothing short of being an object of desire". It is powered by a 59.1 kWh battery pack with a range of 520 km on a single charge. Volkswagen ID. <keyword id="4431588" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="crozz">Crozz</keyword> EV concept - twin electric motors The Volkswagen ID. Crozz EV concept was the only electric car from the German automaker at the Auto Expo 2020. It is powered by twin electric motors that can develop a combined output of 306PS and a peak torque of 320Nm. As per the company, the ID. Crozz has a top speed of 180 kmph and can do 500 km on a single charge. While the company has not revealed an exact launch date, it is expected to be unveiled in 2021. <keyword id="8732619" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-sierra-electric">Tata Sierra Electric</keyword> Concept - a legend reborn The legendary Tata Sierra has been reborn as an electric concept and was the only electric car showcased by <keyword id="42747" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Motors">Tata Motors</keyword> at the Auto Expo 2020. Top upcoming electric cars in India

Volkswagen today showcased four new cars at the ongoing Auto Expo 2018 in Greater Noida. Its subsidiary, Skoda also showcased the Karoq, a midsize SUV. Auto makers such as MG, Mahindra and Kia have also unveiled their vehicles at the auto show. Volkswagen introduced three cars – Taigun, T-Roc and the Tiguan Allspace. The company also revealed the ID. Crozz EV concept. Of the four cars unveiled, the Tiguan Allspace and T-Roc are scheduled to be introduced in the first half of 2020. Upcoming cars in India Volkswagen Taigun The Volkswagen Taigun is the first car from the company that has been built on the MQB A0 IN platform. It will be powered by the company’s TSI technology combined with a DSG gearbox. Safety features on the car include 6 airbags, anti-lock braking system and electronic stability control. The Volkswagen Taigun will be powered by a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine. The car will have a top speed of 183 kmph and will be able to go 0-100 kmph in 9.9 seconds. Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace The Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace is a bigger 7-seater version of the Tiguan which is already available in India and is 109mm longer than the current model. It is powered by a 2.0-litre TSI petrol engine mated to a 7-speed DSG gearbox and offers 4 motion all-wheel drive. The Tiguan Allspace is expected to be priced around ₹35-₹40 lakh. Safety features on the car include seven airbags, ABS, ESP, tyre pressure monitoring system and a reverse parking camera. Volkswagen T-Roc The Volkswagen T-Roc is built on the company’s flexible MQB platform. It is powered by a 1.5-litre TSI EVO engine combined with a 7-speed DSG transmission. It puts out 150PS of power and 200Nm of peak torque. The Volkswagen T-Roc features an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, automatic climate control and an in-car connectivity suite. The safety features include ABS, EBD and a rear parking camera. Volkswagen ID. Crozz EV concept The ID. Crozz EV is an electric concept car that is cross between a SUV and a Coupe. It is powered by twin electric motors and comes with the company’s 4MOTION all-wheel drive tech. The electric motors develop a combined output of 306PS/320Nm and can provide a top speed of 180 kmph. The car can reportedly do 500 km on a single charge. It features the company’s CleanAir system and the company claims you will be breathing clean air in a car. You can also use voice commands to deactivate the autopilot and open and close doors. This car is expected to be announced in 2021. Skoda Karoq The Skoda Karoq is a midsize SUV and is expected to go on sale in the first half of 2020. It is based on the same platform as the T-Roc. It will be equipped with a 1.5-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine, that can develop 150hp and 250Nm of torque. In 2019, the company sold close to 368,000 vehicles worldwide, in the U.S. accounting for 78% of all electric car sales. But one company still makes a strong case for being a serious challenger to Tesla's crown: <keyword id="6361865" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="volkswagen">Volkswagen</keyword>. With a multi-billion dollar bet on electric mobility, VW's goal of manufacturing 28 million <keyword id="6354973" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="electric-vehicles">electric vehicles</keyword> by 2028 might seem wildly ambitious. But the legacy automaker has a plan set in place for taking control of the EV market - and it just might work.Just five years ago, Volkswagen found itself paying billions of dollars in fines for programming its diesel engines to cheat emissions tests. But as the dust still settles from its "Dieselgate" scandal, Volkswagen is now spending money on more than just repairing its reputation.Volkswagen Group is investing almost $37 billion into its electric car program, the most out of any manufacturer. Over $12 billion will be spent specifically at the company's Volkswagen brand. With this investment, Volkswagen's flagship marque has already projected to produce 1 million EVs annually by 2023. By 2025 they expect a total of 3 million amongst all of Volkswagen Group brands.While this sounds like overpromising from a group that sold only 140,000 plug-in cars last year, Volkswagen already has the tools and manpower at its disposal. The automaker recently converted its Zwickau, Germany plant to solely produce the all-electric Volkswagen ID.3 that will be released in Europe this summer. By 2021 that factory is projected to pump out 330,000 cars a year. EV production is then planned to spread to its Dresden, Germany factory, it's Tennessee plant, and two of its China factories. By 2022, Volkswagen Group will be producing electric vehicles at eight different factories on three different continents.But as impressive as these numbers are, they are still optimistic estimates based on Volkswagen's size and wallet. In terms of actual sales, Tesla still dominates the EV world. The question is, can they continue?First, let's put aside stocks. Tesla's recent valuation of over $100 billion is definitely jaw-dropping. The company even surpassed Volkswagen for the first time. But, Tesla sells a fraction of the cars Volkswagen does and generated only 10% of Volkswagen's revenue in 2019. In addition to its namesake brand, Volkswagen Group has a dozen other profitable product lines, as opposed to Tesla's one that's yet to record an annual profit.Still, what Tesla has accomplished with its limited resources deserves plenty of praise. Its sales last year were more than its previous two years combined. The company now projects to sell 500,000 cars in 2020, a 36% increase over last year. If its sales continue growing at that rate, they could be shipping over 2 million cars a year by 2025!But 2020 might not be so certain for Tesla. First of all, it's year-over-year U.S. numbers are already beginning to slow, with annual revenue down 14.9% from 2018. Fortunately, a number of European countries along with China helped pick up the slack, but the U.S. is still the company's biggest market. And as of January 1st this year, that oh so attractive $7,500 tax credit that comes with buying an electric car has fully expired for the company.In addition, American sales of the Model S and Model X are on a downward trend, and being outsold by luxury competitors in Europe. Now the industry is about to see an influx of potential rivals to the <keyword id="2423677" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="model-3">Model 3</keyword>, the cornerstone to Tesla's success. While Tesla is certainly vamping up it's production capacity, it could find itself having to depend on a declining Chinese auto market to continue its growth.Production wise, Tesla's Fremont factory is capable of pumping out nearly 500,000 cars a year. The now up and running Shanghai plant is said to have a capacity of 150,000 Model 3s and will begin <keyword id="4684024" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Model-y">Model Y</keyword> production mid-2020. But the development of its Berlin factory, a major component to its growth in Europe, has already been challenged by local environmentalists. Meanwhile, where the production of the Roadster, Cybertruck and Semi will happen remains unknown. Although this level of production is admirable for an independent company, can it keep up with a conglomerate already established on multiple continents?So we've heard the numbers, but what exactly can we expect to see on Volkswagen's showroom floors? Well, in addition to the luxury models already released through its Audi and Porsche lines, for mainstream buyers its Volkswagen brand has multiple options planned for the next few years, two being released as soon as 2020. This includes the ID.3 hatchback, exclusively available in Europe, and sold for around $30,000, and the ID Crozz planned for the U.S. in late 2020 and priced at around $40,000 before the $7,500 tax credit still available to Volkswagen EVs. The years to follow will include the ID Roomz SUV, the ID Buzz based on its iconic Microbus, and more!But Tesla has plans of its own to expand its limited lineup. Deliveries for its Model Y SUV begin as soon as this March. However, some analysts worry it could "cannibalize" sales of the already successful Model 3, which they believe is responsible for the drop in sales of the luxury-end Model S and Model X. The Model 3 and Y are similarly-priced, very similar looking, and it will eventually sell for over half the price of Tesla's only other SUV, the Model X. Tesla's upcoming Roadster supercar and Cybertruck pickup certainly have impressive potential, but the company may need a lower-priced entry level car to keep up with someone like Volkswagen who has the pockets to produce cheaper vehicles.Volkswagen's biggest challenge may be marketing. Tesla famously claims not to spend a dime on advertising, but has come to dominate the electric car market through YouTube, social media, with its unmistakable "cool factor".But Volkswagen knows it will have to reach its potential buyers somehow. The automaker is already putting the majority of its marketing efforts into the EV sector. This includes a $2 billion ad campaign promoting zero emissions vehicles. And it's clear other mainstream automakers are taking note. About 45% of all car commercials during this year's Super Bowl were for EVs. Even on a local level, the most difficult area to reach, Volkswagen will match funds for its dealerships' commercials and ad campaigns, supplying up to even 75% of the resources.But as the company's 2015 scandal remains fresh in the heads of many environmentalist car buyers, we'll have to see if America and the rest of the world is buying VW's reformed attitude toward greener cars.While it's fun to marvel at rivalries about to take place between brands like Volkswagen and Tesla, the status of the EV market is less exciting. Electric vehicles accounted for only 2.5% of all global car sales in 2019. These next few years will feature a huge increase in the number of EV models available to buyers, but we could just as easily see a scenario with automakers building a huge surplus of cars with no one to buy them. Ford, which has said that it wants to put a fully autonomous car on the road by 2021, will launch those fleets in cooperation with partners already operating in those markets. These fleets will likely come to market in stages, beginning in limited areas, before eventually being rolled out nationwide, Tech Crunch <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2017/08/22/ford-outlines-plan-to-build-self-driving-cars-at-scale-to-deploy-with-partners/">reports</a>.Marakby outlined how Ford plans to overcome some of the challenges associated with building and operating fleets of autonomous vehicles for on-demand rides and deliveries: <ul><li>Ford is investing in hybrid-electric technology that will keep its autonomous vehicles on the road longer between recharging. The success of autonomous ride-hailing, ride-sharing, and delivery vehicles will be measured by the time they spend actually delivering packages or providing rides for passengers, according to Marakby. In order to increase time in-service, Ford is looking into how it can improve the range of electric-hybrid batteries so they can be charged less often.</li><li>Ford's research team at Greenfield Labs in Palo Alto is working on new designs for self-driving cars. Vehicles today are designed around the need for a human driver, and removing the driver will open up new design features and functionality. This will give Ford - and other automakers - the opportunity to rethink the interior and exterior of a vehicle's design to fit new use cases. For instance, a self-driving car designed specifically for ride-hailing could have new <a href="http://www.mckinsey.com/about-us/new-at-mckinsey-blog/combining-design-with-data-to-reimagine-ridesharing">seating arrangements</a> that maximize passenger capacity, while providing each passenger with their own charging outlets and touchscreens for playing media.</li></ul>The post did not reveal any details about what Ford's self-driving vehicles will look like, showing the company is still in relatively early stages of exploring the design of these vehicles. However, the company has a fairly clear vision for how to utilize self-driving cars to take advantage of new business models for carmakers. McKinsey <a href="https://www.mckinsey.de/files/automotive_revolution_perspective_towards_2030.pdf">predicted</a> last year that on-demand mobility and other new digitally-driven services could create up to $1.5 trillion in new revenue for the automotive industry in 2030. That would give the company new opportunities for collecting recurring revenue from customers that buy its auto parts, while also building more loyal ties with those customers.Quantum, which was founded in 2006 and counts 120 employees, specializes in managing data for navigation services for companies, consumers, and government agencies. In Singapore, the government used Quantum's technology to help build a new Electronic Road Pricing system that determines the cost of tolls and parking fees. Quantum manages the data collected in the system to help find ways that the government can adjust tolls and fees to better manage traffic congestion. Additionally, the company helps with data collection and analysis for fleet management services, and in-car and mobile apps for mapping and navigation.The acquisition will give Quantum access to Continental's research and development resources and many partnerships throughout the auto industry. That should help Quantum develop its data collection and management platform faster. It could also help in creating new services to match changes in the auto market as semi-autonomous and fully autonomous technologies start to take hold. That could include routing and navigation services for self-driving taxis or delivery vehicles, or providing <a href="https://businessvalueexchange.com/blog/2016/06/29/predictive-maintenance-part-1-5-predictive-maintenance-automotive-industry/">predictive maintenance</a> for commercial fleets. Storing customer and vehicle information in the cloud enables Tesla to share that data more quickly and easily among different devices, including its cars and its customers' personal computers or mobile devices. Giving customers the ability to instantly share their favorite playlists or personal contacts across all of these devices seamlessly integrates the car into their digital lives. That, in turn, sets up Tesla to quickly launch engaging car-sharing or <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/why-tesla-music-streaming-service-makes-sense-2017-6">music streaming</a> services. The partnership allows online shoppers to order groceries and have them delivered at their convenience. Online orders are collected and packaged by Walmart employees at store locations who then place a delivery request with <a href="https://rush.uber.com/how-it-works">UberRUSH</a>'s crowd-sourced delivery network. Walmart and Uber have been running the test program in the Phoneix, Arizona, and Tampa, Florida areas. Walmart has also been performing grocery deliveries with its own fleet of vehicles in Denver, Colorado and San Jose, California. Even though Walmart has been <a href="http://www.theshelbyreport.com/2017/04/12/walmart-aggressively-expanding-online-grocery-pickup/">expanding</a> its in-store grocery pickup service for online orders, grocery delivery gives it another convenient option for online grocery shoppers to receive their orders. Giving customers multiple delivery options can help Walmart keep its lead position in the US grocery market, even as more grocery spending shifts online in the coming years.</li><li>IBM <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2017/08/22/ibm-costco-walmart-and-others-team-up-to-improve-food-safety-with-blockchains/">announced</a> it is partnering with a consortium of major food brands and grocery retailers, including Dole, Nestle, Walmart, and Kroger, to develop blockchain applications for tracking food through their supply chains. Blockchain technology, which uses a network of computers to store transparent and immutable records of historical data, could help these companies improve their compliance reporting for food safety requirements. The technology would be useful for recording food shipments from their origin through processing and distribution facilities all the way to the final sale at a grocery store location. Companies could use such records for quickly tracing the origin of food contamination issues. Additionally, the record could also include data pertaining to the condition of the food while in transit or storage at a facility, including its temperature or if its packaging had been damaged or broken. </li><li>Volkswagen <a href="https://www.volkswagen-media-services.com/en/detailpage/-/detail/World-premiere-in-Shanghai-The-ID-CROZZ1--crossover-with-the-dynamism-of-a-coup-and-dominance-of-an-SUV/view/4878457/7a5bbec13158edd433c6630f5ac445da?p_p_auth=gBPJ5TmC">debuted</a> the I.D. CROZZ, a new concept for an all-electric crossover vehicle that will go into production in 2020. The vehicle will include an autonomous "I.D. Pilot" mode, and a full digitized control panel that is projected via augmented reality. Theoretically, that would allow drivers to monitor vehicle functions such as speed or engine temperature without taking their eyes off the road. Drivers could also potentially use gestures to adjust settings rather than trying to find the right button or knob. This could be a novel way to give driver's more control over the car's performance and functions without crowding the control panel with more buttons.
