Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has said that the government will try to bring petrol and diesel under GST. If the price changes drastically on an item I buy frequently, I take time to jot down the new one on my list while I'm in the store. Then the next time I open the master list on my computer, I can quickly update it. <h2>No matter how good the deal is, if you aren't going to use it, don't buy it</h2>I like having food on hand so I know that my family will still have things to eat if something happens and we can't make it to the store for a while. But it's easy to take that attitude to the extreme.I used to stock up on almost everything that was on sale because I liked keeping the pantry full and thought it was a frugal way to do it.This was a mistake. I ended up with lots of food in my cupboards that no one in my family actually liked, and everything just sat around for years until it finally reached its expiration date and had to get tossed.<h2>Go to a couple of stores for all your list items</h2>When I go grocery shopping, I almost always visit the same three or four stores. This allows me to take advantage of different products at each without getting burned out from going to too many places. Each time you go into a store, you have the opportunity to spend more than you were planning. If you go less often, you can cut down on those purchases. I go on a big shopping trip once a month so I can take advantage of the better pricing in the larger city. Then each week, I make a quick trip to the local store to pick up staples like milk, eggs, and produce. <h2>Extra beverages can jack up your grocery bill if you aren't careful</h2>Things like juice, pop, and sports drinks can really add up. In order to stick to the budget, I have my family drink water throughout the day, and that's often what I serve with meals. Occasionally we'll have iced tea or lemonade, but it's not the norm. Most kids adjust pretty well, especially when you explain why you're making a change. You might have some complaints at first, but mine eventually learned to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-drink-more-water-2019-3">drink (and even enjoy) water</a>. <h2>Cut out the middle man whenever you can</h2>If you can, purchasing directly from a farmer can save a lot of money.I used to raise my own livestock for meat, but when I stopped, I connected with another farmer. Since I have the freezer space and know it'll get used, I often buy a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-ground-beef-recipes-2018-12">whole cow</a> at a time, along with a whole hog and occasionally a sheep or two.It's definitely a bigger initial expense, but I get steak and roasts for the same price per pound as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/which-chef-has-the-best-burger-recipe-review">hamburgers</a>, so it actually saves me money in the long run. Meat isn't the only thing you can purchase from a farmer. Do a little research and see who grows what around you. New Delhi, The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) Chairman <keyword id="20085060" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="deepak-mohanty" source="keywords">Deepak Mohanty</keyword> on Friday said the total corpus under the <keyword id="20085061" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-pension-system" source="keywords">National Pension System</keyword> and Atal Pension Yojana has crossed Rs 11 lakh crore. The milestone of Rs 11 lakh crore asset under management (AUM) was achieved on January 10, 2024, he told reporters here. The AUM has increased from Rs 10 lakh crore to Rs 11 lakh crore in 4 months 18 days (August 24, 2023 to January 10, 2024), he said, adding the private sector AUM crossed Rs 2 lakh crore. The authority in September revised the AUM target of Rs 12 lakh crore for the current fiscal. The pension authority is working on a minimum assured pension plan, and it could become a reality in the next financial year if the guarantee issued is resolved. "There are a lot of complications in determining the rate of return, what to set as the bar for return. Fund managers are also thinly capitalised. So, you have to keep a check on their liabilities also," <keyword id="19981292" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mohanty" source="keywords">Mohanty</keyword> said. Asked about the Budget wishlist, he said the move to raise the assured return under the Atal pension plan continues to be on the 'wishlist'. However, he declined to comment if the <keyword id="19906106" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="interim-budget" source="keywords">Interim Budget</keyword> may take up the issue. Finance Minister <keyword id="19916618" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nirmala-sitharaman" source="keywords">Nirmala Sitharaman</keyword> will present the Interim Budget for 2024-25 on February 1. The pension fund regulatory body was considering raising the current return of Rs 1,000-5,000 to Rs 2,500-7,500. The chairman of the pension authority also said that few states who have issued notification to pull out of the National Pension System continued to contribute to the plan irrespective of the on-paper withdrawal. They want to keep their monthly <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/mortgages/mortgage-calculator">mortgage payment</a> between $3,000 and $3,500 — or around 30% of their monthly take-home income of about $11,000. Laura is a financial analyst, and Samuel is an electrician: They each made six figures last year, totalling $250,000.However, rising <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/mortgages/home-prices-drop">home prices</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/mortgages/will-mortgage-rates-go-down-this-year">mortgage rates</a> in recent years have made this goal difficult to accomplish. While the Federal Reserve's expected <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/emergency-rate-cut-fed-recession-july-jobs-report-unemployment-powell-2024-8">interest rate cuts</a> might lower mortgage rates, they might not do much to help housing affordability in the immediate future. Per Zillow, the average home value in Portland is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.zillow.com/home-values/13373/portland-or/">$541,000</a>, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.zillow.com/home-values/48521/wilsonville-or/">$642,000</a> in Wilsonville, Oregon, the Portland suburb where the couple currently resides. A SmartAsset <a target="_blank" href="https://smartasset.com/data-studies/most-expensive-housing-markets-2024">analysis</a> of home sale prices published in June found that Portland was the 15th-most expensive housing market in the country.Laura pointed to one home in Wilsonville they were interested in that was listed for $635,000. With an 11% downpayment, they estimated their monthly mortgage payment would be about $5,000 — about 43% of the couple's take-home monthly pay.The couple knows that other areas of the US might have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/real-estate-home-prices-population-growth-best-cities-for-homebuyers-2024-6">more affordable housing</a>, but they're not sure they'd want to move again.The couple lived in Portland for six years before moving to their hometown of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/real-estate-best-cities-for-homebuyers-prices-affordability-mortgage-rates-2023-5#26-spokane-spokane-valley-washington-26">Spokane, Washington</a> in 2018. Housing was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.zillow.com/home-values/20604/spokane-wa/">more affordable</a> — Laura said they bought a home with a monthly mortgage payment of $2,200 — but she and Samuel found themselves missing their work back in Portland.In 2021, after Laura's old supervisor offered to double her current pay if she returned to her old job, the couple decided to sell their home and move back to Portland."We actually tried uprooting the kids to a more affordable town and found ourselves less happy in the end," Laura said.When they first moved back and began looking for homes, Laura said they were a "little picky" because they didn't want to overpay for a home they didn't love. They weren't rewarded for their patience — home prices and mortgages continued to tick up.To save for a home, Laura said she and Samuel aren't saving as much for retirement as they'd like to. Ideally, they'd be putting 15% of their annual income toward retirement — some experts <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/investing/how-much-do-i-need-to-retire">recommend this</a> — but Laura said they've only been able to set aside roughly 3%.The couple has also opted for the part-time <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mom-of-two-would-have-pay-8000-for-summer-camp-2023-1">summer camp</a> option for their two children, who are seven and nine years old. Laura said sending her kids to their camp full-time would have collectively cost around $5,000 a month. When they're not at camp, Laura said the kids stay home with her while she works remotely.Going forward, Laura said they plan to continue monitoring the housing market for a home they like that's in their budget. While they're trying to remain patient, Laura said they're not optimistic that home prices or mortgage rates will drop considerably anytime soon."Our children have begun talking about how they want a house so badly and their own rooms," she said. She made several announcements regarding changes in duties, new initiatives by the government and changes to the tax structure. She also reduced custom duty for smartphone components such as camera lens and open cells of TV panels. The government also announced that it is setting up three new centers of excellence in artificial intelligence (AI), 100 5G labs and more. We will have to wait and see if companies will pass on the benefit to customers and if so, how much. “The move to reduce customs duty on certain input component parts for mobile phones will help drive the broadening and deepening of the local component ecosystem and increase domestic value addition. 'Drishyam 2' crosses ₹100 crore mark at box office

This has been a hardcore logistics, hardcore bureaucracy. Pretty much from the get-go, I've been behind the timeline. I've been pushing, and saying, "I have to get this done. I have to get paperwork. I have to go, go, go, go."Although I'm not limited to only spending $20 — as visas can cost $150 — I'm constantly looking for the cheapest options for travel and accommodations. If there's a VIP bus with windows, air conditioning, WiFi, and hardly any stops between A and B, then it's too expensive.I've primarily stayed in hostels with other roommates, used couch-surfing apps, and eaten street food for the same reason.I traveled across the North Atlantic on several different types of ships — fishing boats, shipping containers, and whatnot. I've been on 40 container ships, and I've built relationships with these companies. I would tell them, "This is a historical project. You are taking part in history. If you help me board your ship, you are a part of something bigger."Sometimes that worked. Other times, they didn't care, and I relied on ferry boats, banana boats, sailboats, and cruise ships.I traveled for a year and-a-half or so, then I lost my income for the project. So, I depleted what I had in my own bank account, which wasn't a part of the plan.I sold a tiny old sail boat I had, I took out a loan, and a second loan. Then, I asked the few followers I had and said, "I'm running out of money here. At the time, I was recovering from cerebral malaria, I'd lost financial sponsorship, and my long-distance relationship to the woman who's my wife today wasn't doing well.It went from being 99% adventure and 1% work, to being 99% work and 1% meeting people, adventure, and the good stuff.I was in physical and mental pain. There was a lot of hardship. I just didn't want to give up on the title. I could be the first in history to do something. I figured if I just push harder, I will eventually get through to a point where it gets a little bit easier, and it will get better and every step will be a step closer to the goal.I wanted people to see parts of the world and see what was going on, and just kind of see the world in a different light — not a negative one. I'm a goodwill ambassador of the Danish Red Cross. I've met with the Red Cross in 199 countries around the world.Within a decade or so it'll be 1,000 people who have been to every country. It gets easier as long as you have all forms of transportation open to you. If you limit yourself so that you cannot fly — especially if you can't go home in between — it's highly unlikely this will ever happen again.<h2>I hope there's still time for more</h2>Over the last 10 years, my wife has come out to see me in various places around the world about 27 times. My family has come to see me, and I've met tens of thousands of people along the way. I've lived with strangers in exchange for culture and companionship, and I became a brand ambassador for sports equipment company Salomon.I'm working with some filmmakers on a documentary set to come out in 2024, and I'm working on a book that I hope will be ready in the same year. I want to see if I still have a chance to start a family with my wife or if it's too late.I've been gone for nearly a decade, so I'm going to have a hard time returning home. Some days are going to be better than others, but I'm now among the most traveled people in the world.

The humanitarian aid organization said in its <a href="https://www.ifrc.org/sites/default/files/2023-01/2022_IFRC-WDR_EN.pdf">World Disasters Report</a> released Monday that "many countries" were not prepared for COVID-19 and that "all countries remain dangerously unprepared for future outbreaks."The IFRC said that countries "need to start preparing now, because our world is becoming increasingly hazardous" as it cautioned against not only disease outbreaks but also climate- and weather-related disasters."The COVID-19 pandemic should be a wake-up call for the global community to prepare now for the next health crisis," Jagan Chapagain, the IFRC's secretary general, said in a statement. Chapagain added, "Our recommendations to world leaders center around building trust, tackling inequality, and leveraging local actors and communities to perform life-saving work.""The next pandemic could be just around the corner; if the experience of COVID-19 won't quicken our steps toward preparedness, what will?" he questioned. The world's largest disaster response network said in the report that by the end of this year, every country should have updated plans for pandemic preparedness and "should have reviewed the relevant legislation to see if it too needs updating."Pandemic preparedness plans, the report says, "should include concrete measures to strengthen equity, trust, and local action."By 2024, according to the report, all countries should adopt a new treaty and revised International Health Regulations.The report also recommends that by 2025 countries should increase domestic health finance by 1% of gross domestic product and global health finance by at least $15 billion per year. "While COVID-19 was a new virus that presented new challenges, there are countless common measures and approaches that could have mitigated the pandemic's impacts," Chapagain said in the report. This was in line with the Indian government’s larger plan to boost local manufacturing of electronics. Higher duties on components would lead to smartphone companies relying on local production in the country. But this also led to an increase in smartphone prices along with other factors such as the ongoing global chip shortage. The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/budget" data-type="tilCustomLink">Union Budget 2022</a> will be announced on February 1 by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharam, and this year fewer or no increases in component duties are expected from the smartphone industry. According to Hari Om Rai, chairman and managing director of phone maker Lava International, there are two major demands from the industry. One is to not impose any “further increase in component duties in this budget as it impacts our global competitiveness.” The other demand is to create a separate budget for homegrown brands. “We are looking at creating economies of scale to create global competitiveness, [and] value-addition will follow,” Rai said. Lava is among the few Indian smartphone brands that still operate and launch products. Other brands like Intex Technologies and Karbonn Mobiles shut shop primarily due to the influx of Chinese brands in the country. Lava launched its first 5G smartphone ‘Agni 5G’ in India last November. Another Indian smartphone brand still floating is Micromax, which made a comeback last year with new smartphones and wireless earbuds as well. Another homegrown and Bengaluru-based startup Creo that tried its luck not only in smartphones but a custom OS as well. Founded by former Hike employees, Creo had launched the <a href="https://www.techradar.com/in/news/hike-acquires-creo-the-makers-of-os-centric-mark-1-smartphone">Mark 1 smartphone</a> that ran on Android-based Fuel OS. The company soon decided to end production of the device and focus on Fuel OS. According to Upasana Joshi, research manager, client devices at IDC India, Indian smartphone brands “continue to struggle in comparison to global or Chinese players owing to the large scale of business and acceptability in the market.” One way of helping bring up more Indian smartphone brands would be a separate budget to build “National Champions” according to Rai. “To acquire strategic skills and become global Indian champions have a remarkable potential to create national wealth and become beacons of economic progress for India's long term technological and financial independence. It is highly imperative to develop and bolster Indian champions to bring strategic skills and technology and augment GDP, employment, and foreign exchange,” Rai said. Another expectation is “huge investments to match production, marketing and operational spends in a consolidated smartphone market like India,” according to Joshi. For the smartphone industry in general, <keyword id="10547300" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="budget-2022" source="Orion">Budget 2022</keyword> is expected to continue the “push for establishing component factories and making them available locally, along with fewer exemptions,” Joshi added. But we may continue to see smartphone prices increasing even in 2022. “IDC expects ASPs (average selling price) for smartphones to only rise further and peak annually,” Joshi said. Regardless, as per research firm Counterpoint, India's smartphone market revenue crossed $38 billion in 2021 with 27 per cent (on-year) growth, as shipments grew 11 per cent to reach 169 million units. It would be interesting to see how the upcoming budget will aid the existing Indian manufacturers to bolster their share to survive, unlike their counterparts that had to quit the business.
