Lichen planus</h2>Oral <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/oral-lichen-planus/symptoms-causes/syc-20350869" target="_blank" rel="noopener">lichen planus</a> is a chronic inflammatory condition that occurs when the immune system attacks cells in the mucous membranes of the mouth. If you have oral lichen planus, you might notice "lace-like" white patches on the tongue or on the inside of the cheeks, says Nor. The cause is not completely known, but some triggers may include:<ul><li>Medications</li><li>Infections</li><li>Allergens</li><li>Injuries to the mouth</li><li>Stress </li></ul>Aside from lacy-looking white patches, you may also have symptoms such as:<ul><li>Red and swollen patches </li><li>Sores </li></ul>These <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/oral-lichen-planus/symptoms-causes/syc-20350869" target="_blank" rel="noopener">patches and sores</a> can occur anywhere in the mouth, including:<ul><li>The tongue</li><li>The inside of the cheeks </li><li>The gums</li><li>The inside of the cheeks </li><li>The roof of the mouth</li></ul>Treatment: A diagnosis typically requires a <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/oral-lichen-planus/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20350874" target="_blank" rel="noopener">biopsy or culture</a> to determine if there are any coccuring infections. If you are asymptomatic aside from the white patches, your doctor will typically educate you on the condition and conduct follow-ups over time to make sure the lesions remain asymptomatic with no significant changes in their clinical appearance, says Nor. However, if you are experiencing pain or ulcers, you may be <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/oral-lichen-planus/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20350874" target="_blank" rel="noopener">prescribed</a> numbing agents, topical steroids, or oral corticosteroids. <h2>5. Human papillomavirus (HPV)</h2><a href="https://www.cdc.gov/cancer/hpv/basic_info/hpv_oropharyngeal.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">HPV</a> is a sexually transmitted infection<a href="https://www.insider.com/how-do-you-get-hpv" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> that can affect</a> not only the genitals, but also the mouth and throat. This usually results from <a href="https://medlineplus.gov/ency/article/007762.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tongue kissing</a> or giving oral sex to a person with the virus.On the tongue, <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-do-you-get-hpv" target="_blank" rel="noopener">HPV</a> may manifest as white cauliflower-like lesions, says Nor. These spots are typically white, elevated, and benign. If you have white spots or lesions in your mouth due to HPV, there is a risk of transmitting the virus to others, so it's best to avoid tongue kissing and sexual activity to be on the safe side.Important: While lesions on the tongue can be a sign of HPV, the infection is <a href="https://www.insider.com/hpv-in-men" target="_blank" rel="noopener">typically asymptomatic</a>, and many infected people don't realize they have HPV since they don't exhibit any signs of it.Treatment: While it's possible for a healthy person to clear HPV on their own within <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/cancer/hpv/basic_info/hpv_oropharyngeal.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">one to two years</a>, the lesions typically require surgical removal, says Nor. A biopsy of the lesion may also be done to confirm the diagnosis. <h2>6. Pre-cancer or cancer</h2>The most serious potential cause of white spots on the tongue are related to precancer or cancer. One example is <a href="https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/17655-leukoplakia" target="_blank" rel="noopener">leukoplakia</a>, which results in otherwise asymptomatic white patches that can be precancerous, says Nor. It affects around <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK442013/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2.6%</a> of the global population, and up to <a href="https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/17655-leukoplakia" target="_blank" rel="noopener">17.5%</a> of people with leukoplakia will go on to develop squamous cell carcinoma. <a href="https://www.cedars-sinai.org/health-library/diseases-and-conditions/t/tongue-cancer.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Squamous cell carcinoma</a> is the most common type of cancer found on the tongue, which may result in white spots, says Cash. Symptoms may include:<ul><li>A lesion that looks like an ulcer</li><li>A lesion that bleeds easily </li></ul>Oral cancer accounts for <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7112710/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">3%</a> of total cancer cases, and squamous cell carcinoma accounts for about 90% of them. Treatment: Whether your doctor thinks the lesion is pre-cancer or cancer, a biopsy of the lesion is necessary to identify the cause and develop a treatment plan. From there, cancer <a href="https://www.cedars-sinai.org/health-library/diseases-and-conditions/t/tongue-cancer.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">treatment</a> may include surgery, radiation therapy, or chemotherapy. <h2>Insider's takeaway</h2>If you're noticing new white spots on your tongue, your best bet is to see your dentist or doctor to get a diagnosis and have a proper course of treatment. <ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="2005597" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="polar-star">Polar Star</keyword>, the Coast Guard's only working <keyword id="1287391" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="icebreaker">icebreaker</keyword>, wrapped up an <keyword id="59606" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="arctic">Arctic</keyword> mission in February.</li><li>The 45-year-old ship is "definitely showing its age," its commanding officer said.</li></ul>The months-long Arctic operation that Coast Guard icebreaker Polar Star finished last month was a rare mission for the US's sole heavy icebreaker.It was the first time a US icebreaker had been <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coast-guard-icebreaker-sails-farther-north-than-ever-before-2020-12" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in the Arctic in winter since 1982</a>. The crew overcame "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/captain-of-us-icebreaker-polar-star-describes-treacherous-trip-north-2021-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">treacherous</a>" conditions, but they also grappled with a problem aboard the ship that may hinder the US's Arctic ambitions.Polar Star is "now 45 years old, and it's definitely showing its age," Capt. William Woityra, Polar Star's commanding officer, said in February at an event cohosted by the University of <keyword id="20636" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Alaska">Alaska</keyword> Fairbanks and the Nome office of Alaska Sea Grant."We were up to this mission, and we were excited to undertake it, but it took the crew working around the clock to keep the ship running," Woityra added.<div type="image" title="Coast Guard icebreaker Polar Star Alaska Arctic" height="1125" width="2000" msid="81441131" hostid="261"></div>Polar Star can break through 21 feet of ice and sail through 40- to 50-foot seas (though seas much lower than that can incapacitate the crew, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/captain-of-us-icebreaker-polar-star-describes-treacherous-trip-north-2021-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Woityra previously told Insider</a>). The icebreaker's usual wintertime trip to Antarctica to help resupply the McMurdo Sound research station was canceled because of the pandemic. It was sent north after the US's only other oceangoing icebreaker, Healy, broke down as it sailed to the Arctic.Polar Star has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fire-aboard-coast-guard-heavy-icebreaker-polar-star-in-south-pacific-2019-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">its own history of breakdowns</a>, which cropped up again."On New Year's Eve, we actually got stopped in the ice," Woityra said. "We had a diode on our AC-to-DC rectifier that blew out, and we had to replace it. And this is a part that is no longer available. It's not made anymore."Polar Star has a split propulsion system. In addition to gas turbines, it has what Woityra called "basically locomotive engines" powering generators that send power through that rectifier to turn a propeller shaft."We've got a few dozen of these in a box on a shelf," Woityra said of the diode. "When they're gone, the ship will not be able to run anymore. It's really kind of disconcerting ... that this ship, and this operation, and the US's icebreaking presence in the Arctic is reliant on a box of spare parts that ... there are no more of."<div type="image" title="Coast Guard icebreaker Polar Star Arctic Bering Alaska" height="1331" width="2000" msid="81441132" hostid="261"></div>Parts for Polar Star are dwindling. Crews have stripped replacement parts from its out-of-service sister ship, Polar Sea, and even <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/u-s-coast-guard-falls-behind-russia-on-spending-for-vital-equipment/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">turned to eBay</a> to find a resistor unavailable elsewhere."The only source of supply in the world was on eBay," Woityra told Insider during the event. "We worked with the supplier to actually pull listing from eBay, and we were able to use normal government contracting mechanisms to purchase those resistors.""With a ship that's almost 50 years old, every single part of it is just falling apart, and there's no one-for-one replacement to keep it going," Woityra added.Polar Star is set to begin a five-year service-life extension program this summer to keep it going for another decade. The Coast Guard has awarded a contract for a new icebreaker, which it expects by 2024, with two more by 2030.<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-xuelong-2-icebreaker-arctic-trump-deals-for-more-2020-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Leasing an icebreaker</a> is also being considered as a near-term option, as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-worried-about-icebreaker-gap-with-russia-in-arctic-2020-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener">other countries expand their icebreaker fleets</a>.<h2>'We're pushing back'</h2><div type="image" title="Coast Guard icebreaker Polar Star Alaska Arctic" height="1331" width="2000" msid="81441133" hostid="261"></div>Despite mechanical challenges, the Coast Guard was enthusiastic about Polar Star's mission, which included testing communications technology for the Defense Department and scientific research in an environment and at a time of year for which data is scant."It had been 40 years since the Coast Guard had been operating in this region," Woityra said. "So here was a chance to gather some in-situ data that was normally not available under any circumstances."American researchers, Merchant Marine Academy midshipmen, and Royal Navy sailors were also aboard Polar Star for the mission, as were junior Coast Guard members, there to train as the service tries to rebuild its Arctic proficiency."We've really got to build out a future fleet of icebreaker sailors, as the Arctic ... becomes increasingly more an area of focus and becomes increasingly more accessible," Adm. Karl Schultz, commandant of the Coast Guard, said <a href="https://sites.tufts.edu/fletcherarctic/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">at a separate event</a> last month.That increasing accessibility, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/record-heat-in-the-arctic-is-affecting-ice-cover-fisheries-2020-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">driven by climate change</a>, has made the Arctic a growing venue for geopolitical competition. The <keyword id="283907" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Bering-Strait">Bering Strait</keyword>, which separates the US and Russia, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bering-strait-importance-grows-amid-us-russia-tension-arctic-activity-2020-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener">is likely to be a focal point for that competition</a>.<div type="image" title="Coast Guard icebreaker Polar Star Alaska Arctic" height="1500" width="2000" msid="81441134" hostid="261"></div>Schultz, Woityra, and other Coast Guard officials have stressed that the service has a good relationship with its Russian counterpart, but a major Russian military exercise in the area last summer, during which Russian warships harassed US fishing boats, added to tensions.Polar Star's crew was aware of that encounter and was motivated to "defend US interests" and support Alaskans, Woityra said.When Polar Star patrolled the US-Russian maritime boundary, the Russian fishing fleet "was well on their side," Woityra said. While in the strait, Polar Star also saw "regular overflights by Russian border-patrol aircraft.""We knew that they were coming. They knew where we were," Woityra said. "We got word 12 to 24 hours ahead of time ... and when they came into range, they held us on VHF radio, we exchanged information, everything went exactly as according to plan."Schultz said last month that "having a pragmatic relationship with the Russians is a good thing," as it facilitates cooperation on search-and-rescue operations, environmental management, and disaster response, but the service is "projecting our sovereign interest" in the region, Schultz added."Russia's pushing up against that line, and we're pushing back," Schultz said.

Colombia says it's convincing drug farmers to grow other crops - but drug traffickers say otherwise

A change of <keyword id="6386905" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="guard">guard</keyword> in mobile maker, <keyword id="71696" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Micromax">Micromax</keyword>’s management team has pushed up some notable changes. It’s soon climbing up at no. 2 position in terms of sales and becoming India’s largest home-grown manufacturer of mobile phones, Micromax is keen on selling a 25% stake to a consortium led by Ant <keyword id="6354241" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Financial-Services">Financial Services</keyword> Group, China's leading online financial services company that owns Alipay. As per a news report by The Economic Times, Micromax has been valued at around $4-5 billion (approximatelyRs 24,000-30,000 crore). 
 The ET report states, Alipay, China's top online payment solution company and part of the <keyword id="163405" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alibaba-Group">Alibaba Group</keyword>, is bringing in two to three partners. The proposed deal would see both infusion of capital and exits, partial or total, by existing investors, said the people quoted earlier. An exit will give existing investors significant returns on their investments, sources known to the ET has confirmed. 
 
TA Associates, for instance, currently owns 15% in Micromax, for which it paid around Rs 225 crore five years ago when the company was valued at around Rs 1,500 crore. 
 However, bringing the deal to fruition would partly depend on resolving differences that are said to have cropped up between the company's promoters and its <keyword id="6364480" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chairman">chairman</keyword> Sanjay Kapoor, a former <keyword id="5645" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="CEO">CEO</keyword> of Bharti Airtel's Indian business, over the company's future direction. The four founder promoters — Rahul Sharma, Rajesh Agarwal, Sumeet Kumar and Vikas Jain — own a little less than 80% of the company. 
 
A person having knowledge of the deal confirmed that the "new guard", mainly Kapoor, feels that Micromax should focus mainly on online sales, but the promoters differ, noting that 70% of its revenue still comes from offline, or traditional retail channels. "There are also disagreements over the positioning of the phones and technology adoption. Kapoor believes Micromax should increase its average selling price while promoters feel there is still immense potential in the mass market," one of the people aware of the fact told the financial daily. Despite the differences the deal with Ant Financial Services is on track, said the people cited above.

Last August, agricultural associations predicted Spain would produce 1 million tons of olive oil in the 2022/23 crop year — a 27% fall from the previous year. But by the end of the harvest, there was around 680,000 tons; a 50% decrease, per Olive Oil Times.

But Dakin didn't stop there, interviewing six partners about <a style="text-decoration: underline;" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/goldman-sachs-david-solomon-ceo-partners-departures-strategy-2023-9">what led them to leave</a>. The conversations provide a fascinating glimpse into a person's rationale for leaving a role some consider to be the pinnacle of the field. And while Solomon's strategic missteps were a key talking point for many, not all the former partners bashed the CEO. Some defended their old boss to Dakin, pointing to the number of changes he's taken on during his tenure.The bank, meanwhile, has long pushed back on the notion of a partner exodus, explaining the turnover as the natural changing of the guard and pointing to an increase in the average tenure of partners.But much of the interest around partner exits isn't just about how many partners have left. It's also about which ones have gone. Fred Baba, considered a <a style="text-decoration: underline;" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rising-stars-wall-street-investing-trading-dealmaking-2020-9#frederick-baba-31-goldman-sachs-8">rising star at the bank</a>, left less than six months after <a style="text-decoration: underline;" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fred-baba-speaking-up-about-racism-leaving-goldman-sachs-2023-5">being named a partner</a>. One former partner noted broader exits at the firm could boil down to flushing out the people who weren't willing to back Solomon's vision. But how many of those people are still at the firm?
