Credit repair services will help fix mistakes on your credit report in exchange for a fee, but it's easier than you'd think to do it yourself

Then I got a letter from my bank, announcing a pretty incredible limited time bonus – 5 percent back on travel-related purchases made by March 30.
The bonus just so happened to be for the card I hadn't used in months. And it was no coincidence either. 
We all know that red flags like late payments, too many lines of open credit, and a mountain of student loan debt can knock dozens of points off credit scores.
But what about the little-known ways banks and lenders are judging us –– even those of us who are "low-risk" clients? 
With help from Adrian Nazari, CEO of <a href="http://creditsesame.com/" target="_blank">CreditSesame.com</a>, here are five ways every credit customer is judged, whether they like it or not. 
Behavior Score. When lenders size up potential borrowers, they aren't just looking at how much they spend, but where they spend as well. If you've gotten a letter in the mail congratulating you on a freshly-inflated credit limit (or a new cashback bonus like I did) chances are your lender has noticed you've been diligently paying off your card and selectively shopping where you can afford to.
"For example, if you normally shop at high-end stores and regularly pay off your card, and then suddenly start shopping at discount stores and carrying a balance, the lender could use this behavior data as an indicator that you have become higher risk and could take steps to minimize its exposure," says Nazari. "Alternatively, if your behavior data indicates you are a good risk but you aren’t generating a profit, an issuer might determine how to incentivize spending."

<li>How to improve it: Since Behavior Scores are based on triggers like long-term credit card activity, late payments, limit breaches, and fees, if you can figure out how to improve these, you'll be able to beef up your score. </li>
</ul>
Revenue Score: FICO uses this score to help creditors find the “diamonds in the rough," says Nazari. "Those slightly higher risk prospects [who] have the potential to be highly profitable customers. In other words, this score allows lenders to determine how profitable you are to them and market to you accordingly, which could include offering you deals that incentivize spending."

<li>How to improve it: There's not really much you can do here, Nazari notes. The revenue score just helps the lender tailor its marketing strategy to your specific needs –– and weaknesses.</li>
</ul>
Bankruptcy Score. Despite its title, this score isn't used to lower scores when consumers file bankruptcy. On the flipside, it's a carefully formulated algorithm used to predict how likely they are to go bankrupt. "This score is usually generated when you open a new line of credit and you give the creditor permission to pull a credit report," says Nazari. "This score helps creditors assess and minimize their risk in advance, and allows banks, which are required by law to keep a certain amount of 'bad debt reserves' on hand, to lower that amount."

<li>How to improve it: Nazari's advice: "Pay your bills on time, keep debt balances low, open accounts only when necessary to avoid excessive inquiries on your credit report, and monitor your credit report regularly to ensure it is accurate." Until recently, credit report monitoring has been a costly (and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/heres-why-you-should-ditch-your-credit-monitoring-service-2012-3" target="_blank">not entirely necessary</a>) service for consumers. But now <a href="http://www.creditsesame.com/blog/credit-sesame-now-offers-free-credit-monitoring/" target="_blank">Credit Sesame</a> and <a href="http://www.creditkarma.com/credit-monitoring" target="_blank">Credit Karma</a> both offer the service for free. </li>
</ul>
Collection Score. Your <keyword id="6380214" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="credit-score">credit score</keyword> doesn't just drop when you have debts sent into collections. How likely you are to pay off those debts can determine whether collectors <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/debt-collectors-pose-as-facebook-friends-student-debt-cfpb-2013-1" target="_blank">will harass you</a> or not. "The lower your collection score, the less likely a debt collection agency is to aggressively pursue you because the agency doesn’t want to waste valuable resources trying to collect debt that is unlikely to be recovered."

<li>How to improve it. Simple: Don't let your debts go into collections. And if they have? Don't panic. Follow through with each phone call, ask if they are willing to negotiate, and keep a clean paper trail throughout. For unnecessarily aggressive collectors, don't hesitate to alert the <a href="http://www.consumerfinance.gov/complaint/" target="_blank">CFPB</a> or <a href="http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0149-debt-collection" target="_blank">FTC</a>. </li>
</ul>
Attrition Score. If all this wasn't creepy enough, the attrition score is also known as the “Wandering Eye” score. It's how lenders decide how likely it is that you'll "cheat" on them with another competitor. "When this score is high, it tells lenders that they may need to sweeten the pot and offer you various perks so they can continue to make you happy and committed," Nazari says.

<li>How to improve it. We're not sure you'd want to worry about this one. In fact, it could be good for you to make your lender a little jealous from time time. "You want your credit card issuer to think you might abandon them for a competitor so they’ll work a little harder to keep you," says Nazari. "Calling your issuer to request lower rates or balance transfer information can let them know you might be in the market to make a switch. If you use your credit card regularly, another way to let them know they need to court you again is to simply stop using your card."</li>

Five Little-Known Ways Credit Lenders Judge You

They can mean the difference between renting a home or owning one, and getting a great interest rate on your car loan or walking off the lot with a subprime contract.
And yet, the credit reporting industry is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/42-million-have-credit-report-errors-ftc-report-2013-2" target="_blank">even more flawed than we thought. </a>
A 2013 <a href="http://www.ftc.gov/os/2013/02/130211factareport.pdf" target="_blank">report</a> by the Federal Trade Commission estimates one out of every five people has an inaccurate <keyword id="524374" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="credit-report">credit report</keyword>. On a national scale, that translates to as many as 42 million mistakes. 
Whether it's a misspelled last name or a line of credit you never remember opening, no mistake is too small to have corrected. 
Spotting them is the easy part. Getting them fixed is a whole other story. Here's how to dispute credit errors on your report:
Step one: Once a year, download your free credit report from all three credit bureaus. These are Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax. The simplest way to access all three is to visit <a href="https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp" target="_blank">annualcreditreport.com.</a> It's crucial to check all three. If you spot an error on one report, it's likely that it shows up on another. 
Step two: File a dispute with each credit reporting agency that has the error on file. It's a pain to file more than one dispute, but it's crucial if you want to keep all your reports clean. Each credit reporting agency has a form consumers can fill out in order to dispute errors. Using the web form is the quickest way to get your complaint in the system, and far more efficient than calling their 800 number and talking to representatives in India. 
Step three: Let the system work. Disputes take at least a few weeks to process. During that time, each case is assigned a two- or three-word code and sent off to the credit lender that supplied the incorrect data. They'll process the dispute and let the credit agency know whether your complaint is valid or not.
Step four: You'll get the results in an e-mail or by regular mail. If the lender admits to a mistake, they'll immediately correct the data and your report will be updated by the credit reporting agency. 
Step five: If your dispute was denied, this is when things can get tricky. You can file another dispute, but you'll strengthen your case if you find proof. Gather as much evidence to support your claim as possible, like receipts or any other proof of payment. Mail it in to the credit reporting agency via snail mail (as far as we can tell, credit reporting agency websites don't allow attachments). 
Once an agency has recieved the new evidence, they are legally obligated to reopen your case. If that doesn't work, you can skip the middle man altogether and go directly to your lender. In either case, they have 30 to 45 days to resolve your claim under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. 
All of this may sound like quite a process, but checking once a year is well worth the effort.

Wipe Errors Off Your Credit Report In 5 Simple Steps

The Indian <keyword id="22196321" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="credit-card-industry" source="keywords">credit card industry</keyword> is struggling to grow, as new issues slow down on a year-on-year (YoY) basis. Not only has the growth i.e. issuance of new credit cards slowed down, but lenders are also becoming increasingly cautious of the asset qualities, a recent report by Nomura showed. From 19% in July 2024, the growth in the <keyword id="6368202" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="credit-card" source="Orion">credit card</keyword> spendings came down to 13% in August 2024. The year-to-date (YTD) growth has also significantly declined in FY25, currently standing at 17%, markedly down from 28% in FY24. For the fifth consecutive month, the number of new credit cards added to the system remained well below the 1-million, or 10 lakh mark. Around 9.2 lakh credit cards were added during the month, a slight uptick from the 7.55 lakh cards that came into the system In July 2024. However, there is growth in this space nevertheless, with about 10.55 crore active credit cards at present, marking a 15.6% YoY increase. Even the annualised spend per card, or the average amount spent via an annual card during an year grew 1% YoY to Rs 1.87 lakh. But this was far less than the 7% growth annual spends via one credit card saw in FY24. Meanwhile, what continues to burgeon consistently is the outstanding amount on these credit cards, which ballooned to Rs 2.7 lakh crore in June 2024, up from Rs 2.6 lakh crore in March 2024, and around Rs 2 lakh crore in the year ago period. To put this in perspective, pre-pandemic, the total outstanding amount stood at Rs 87,686 crore, which marks a 24% CAGR in this amount, in just a span of 5 years. <h2>Large drops, slowdown to sustain</h2>Even the monthly expenditure per card dropped 2% YoY to Rs 16,000 in August, 2024. Subsequently, the transaction volume via credit cards also dipped to 1.6% in August, along with the total amount of <keyword id="21084888" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="credit-card-spending" source="keywords">credit card spending</keyword>, which fell to Rs 1.69 lakh crore in August, from Rs 1.73 lakh crore in July. Also, there has been a hefty cutdown in provisions made for credit card reward points, which reflects in the quantum of credit card benefits that have been mowed out by companies of late, making credit cards far less lucrative than before. <h2>HDFC takes lead </h2>During August 2024, <keyword id="19895995" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="HDFC-Bank" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="HDFC Bank" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="HDFC Bank">HDFC bank</keyword> added a total of 2.41 lakh credit cards, taking its total tally of active credit cards to 2.19 crore. <keyword id="19900482" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ICICI-Bank" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="ICICI Bank" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="ICICI Bank">ICICI Bank</keyword> came a second distant, adding 1.45 lakh credit cards during the month, which means that the second-largest credit card issuer now holds over 1.75 crore active credit cards. Axis Bank and SBI Cards also added 1.27 lakh and 1.1 lakh cards, respectively to their repertoire during the month, while the growth numbers at Kotak Mahindra Bank remained largely flat, stagnating the bank's total card tally at 54.13 lakh. This was due to the ongoing ban on the bank due to its weak IT infrastructural issues imposed by RBI in April 2024. If anything, the bank's number of credit cards declined by 61,191 during the month. Even as the festive season approaches, experts think that it is unlikely to make a major dent in credit card spendings, which are expected to see a further slowdown in the quarters to come.

Credit card growth experiencing a slowdown, as borrowers struggle to pay back loans

The <keyword id="21570567" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="credit-offtake" source="keywords">credit offtake</keyword> continued to grow at the rate of 13.9% year-on-year to reach Rs. 168.1 lakh crore for the fortnight ending July 12, 2024. However, the pace of growth was slow, a Care Edge report said. Credit offtake is a type of <keyword id="19946069" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bank-credit" source="keywords">bank credit</keyword> that assists businesses in getting financing for future projects. The credit offtake increased by 14.0% year-on-year, but declined by 0.4% sequentially for the fortnight ended July 12, 2024. Over the last twelve months, credit offtake expanded by Rs. 20.4 lakh crore. The report attributed the sluggishness to the higher base effect and banks' focus on restraining the credit-to-deposit (CD) ratio. <keyword id="20218853" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="deposits" source="keywords">Deposits</keyword> grew by 11.3 % year-on-year for the fortnight, including the impact of the HDFC merger, reaching Rs. 211.8 lakh crore, driven by growth in time deposits. "The <keyword id="20575555" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="credit-to-deposit" source="keywords">Credit to Deposit</keyword> ratio stood at 79.4 % for the fortnight (July 12, 2024). Meanwhile, if we study the credit and deposit inflows over the past 3 months and 6 months, we can observe that credit offtake has lagged the deposit growth numbers. Hence, the <keyword id="20048508" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CD-ratio" source="keywords">CD ratio</keyword> derived from these flows from January would be around 70% and from March would be approximately 54%," the report added. The report added that going forward, bank credit offtake could face challenges, and is likely to be tepid for the entire year. Inflows over the past three and six months show credit offtake at 5.3% for six months and 2.3% for three months, lagging behind deposit growths of 6.0% and 3.4% respectively. Deposits rose by 11.3% year-on-year for the fortnight, but declined by 0.5 % sequentially. In absolute terms, deposits expanded by Rs. 23.9 lakh crore over the last twelve months. The report anticipated that the deposit is expected to be strong in FY25, as banks focus on strengthening their liability franchise, sourcing funds through certificates of deposit, despite higher costs. As per the data in the report, the absolute growth in credit offtake was Rs. 8.4 lakh crore for six months, and Rs. 3.8 lakh crore for three months, lagging behind deposit growth of Rs. 11.9 lakh crore and Rs. 7.0 lakh crore for the same periods. The CD ratio has floated around 80 % since September 2023, standing at 79.4 % for the fortnight ending July 12, 2024, as per the report.
