As the adoption of <keyword id="6358577" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital-payments" source="Orion">digital payments</keyword> and wallets grow significantly, credit card users spent more than ₹39,000 crore on wallets and digital payments, including ₹7,850 crore on travel alone in 2021, a new report revealed on Friday. Expenditure on food and utility bills remained consistent during all months while food and beverages saw high spending after the lockdown restrictions were eased from July to October, according to data provided by <keyword id="1763236" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="cred" source="Orion">cred</keyword>it card bill management platform CRED. "2021 can be defined as the year of self care for CRED members. This was visible from the increased spend across categories such as travel, shopping and health and wellness. In 2022, we look forward to growing and providing more experiences to our members,a said <keyword id="192201" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kunal-shah" source="Orion">Kunal Shah</keyword>, Founder of CRED. As travel restrictions eased, more individuals packed their bags to venture out. Travel credit card expenditure was Rs 1,103.11 crore in September -- higher than any month in 2021. The spending remained on a high in October with ₹1,091 crore spent by members. May and June saw 24 lakh transactions, amounting to a total of ₹675 crore. However, July saw a return of travel with credit card spends rising to ₹602.26 crore. Maldives and Dubai, which opened borders to Indians, were the most picked international destinations this year. Within India, popular destinations were Goa, Coorg, Jaipur, Udaipur, <keyword id="6354321" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bengaluru" source="Orion">Bengaluru</keyword> and Mumbai for staycations and short trips. From March to May, individuals spent over ₹1,000 crore, collectively, on food and beverages when the pandemic restrictions were strict and online food deliveries were the only alternative to dining out. As the restrictions were lifted across various states, more individuals started venturing out to eateries, cafes and bars. The months of August (₹1,750 crore) and September (₹1,727 crore) recorded the highest transactions and payments made on food and beverages, while October continued to see the rise with ₹1,427 crore spent. Expenditure on wellness and self care also saw steady growth with ₹44.96 crore being spent in September, compared to a combined total of ₹49 crore in June and July. Fitness remained a popular trend amongst individuals, especially in January-March witnessing spends worth ₹1,152 crore, according to the <keyword id="12756808" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CRED-report" source="Orion">CRED report</keyword>. CRED identified this gap and consolidated them all under one platform, for a small commission. The next market that’s desperately in need of an aggregation is the OTT market – which has over <a href="https://www.exchange4media.com/digital-news/ht-medias-ott-play-premium-service-eyes-15-million-paid-subs-by-year-end-120746.html">55 </a>offerings. “The largest streaming services in the market are Disney+ Hotstar, Amazon and Netflix. The country also has a vast array of smaller local SVODs, including provisions from local broadcasters like Zee TV and premium cinema providers like Eros Now. Due to its size and diversity, the market is ripe for aggregation,” says a report by PwC. Many streaming services, many more subscriptions Apart from the national offerings, Indian OTTs have become specialized and niche over time with regional offerings like Hoichoi, Aha, Sun Nxt and more. In fact, <keyword id="758541" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="amazon-prime" source="Orion">Amazon Prime</keyword> has also started this with Prime Video Channels but has eight channels that users can subscribe to and pay at one go. Such offerings can only expand from here. Currently, platforms like Tata Play, OTTplay, YuppTV Scope, ScreenHits TV and Airtel offer subscriptions to a few OTT services under one roof – but the choice, like in the case of Amazon Prime, is limited. Times Prime offers 15+ OTT subscriptions under one roof. "We are pulling out all the stops to ensure that our members get the best experiences under one umbrella. The Times Prime app, which is super easy to use, is the perfect product for consumption of content in today's subscription environment," says Harshita Singh, business head of Times Prime. 33-year-old Mumbai resident Khushboo Alag watches content across four <keyword id="5293670" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ott-platforms" source="Orion">OTT platforms</keyword>. She has subscribed to two of them, and shares two more with her family. “I have tried a couple of aggregators but I haven’t found the one yet that offers personalized experience. Existing apps haven’t been helpful and I am still looking for that one space where I could just log in to watch all the content that I am interested in,” says Alag. Some entertainment lovers have bought a smart television or a firestick to easily juggle through different OTT platforms on their television set. Firestick is just not enough, say users Vaamanaa Sethi, a Delhi-based resident, is one such user who has access to Amazon Prime, Disney+ Hotstar, Netflix and ZEE5 — thanks to her firestick. “We need an aggregator that can allow us to select which movie we want to watch under one roof. If I want to watch a movie and it is not available on Netflix, then I can easily switch to Amazon Prime. I don’t want to struggle,” says Sethi. Then there is the problem of managing and paying multiple subscriptions. Chaittali Dave, a Mumbai resident who is a mother of twins, said that she can’t watch OTT content on her television set. She is hoping to find a mobile-agnostic aggregator. “I can’t watch Mirzapur on television in front of my kids. You can use a firestick or Tata Play if you live with a nuclear family,” says Dave. 23-year-old Mumbai resident Shraddha Khaire is particularly a movie buff. She has subscribed to 6-8 OTT apps and says that it has been a frustrating experience for her to pay a premium price for one movie. “There have been times that I had to subscribe to a whole new OTT just to watch that one show or movie, and let’s not forget the premium charges for the same,” shared Khaire. Her experience with teleco aggregators hasn’t been very pleasant either. She hopes a new aggregator will make the whole experience very seamless, simple and efficient for me as a regular user of various OTTs, such as her. “There will be a single sign-up, single ID for accessing multiple platforms. While telcos like Jio and Airtel, DTH services like Tata Sky, etc., offer an array of OTT services, but you need a connection to these services to access the OTTs. Overall, I think if there was a platform that offered access to a bundle of more streaming services, I wouldn’t mind going for it,” adds Khaire. New Delhi, June 2 (IANSlife) A rise in spending on digital subscriptions for services like OTT streaming platforms, online classes and e-newspaper subscriptions, and a sharp drop in dining-out and ordering food online, were among what marked spending patterns of affluent Indians during the pan-India lockdown, according to CRED. According to CRED data accessed by IANSlife, it was unsurprising to note that credit card spending dropped initially by 10 per cent when the lockdown was announced in March and went down even further by 51 per cent when it was in full swing April-onwards. The closure of non-essential online and offline marketplace services explains why Indians spent less in this period The data is based on credit card spending patterns of CRED's million+ members across Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, with February as baseline. What they rushed to buy? When the lockdown was announced in late March, Delhiites felt the need to tank up which led to a substantial increase in fuel spends on their credit card, by up to 50 per cent within the first week, while medicals spends for Mumbaikars rose by a staggering 100 per cent. Bangaloreans, instead, preferred to stock up on essentials with residents spending the most on online grocery shopping which increased by 44 per cent, CRED said. No spending on non-home food When it comes to food habits in March, physical grocery spends rose in all three metropolitans, as did online grocery spends. On average, food ordering spends decreased the cities by 24 per cent, and those on dining out saw an even sharper decline - with at least 40 per cent in all three cities. The figures changed in April, as people did not step out for even essentials. Physical grocery spends recorded the highest decline in Delhi (63 percent), followed by Bengaluru (45 per cent) and then Mumbai (40 per cent). Online grocery spends took a hit for worse in April, as did food ordering and dining out. The latter saw massive drops - Delhi by 88 per cent, Mumbai by 90 per cent and Bengaluru by 82 per cent. Entertainment comes home People didn't step out of their homes but entertained themselves online. While spends on food and going out declined across cities, a major spike was seen in spending on digital subscriptions like online entertainment as well as education or news services. According to CRED, this clearly reflects that beyond food, medicines and utilities, millennials invested majorly on learning and entertainment during these unprecedented times. Subscription spends started rising across cities as soon as the lockdown was announced. Fuel spends Spends on travel and cab services declined when the lockdown was announced and subsequently. Delhiites still prioritised fuelling up during this time with nowhere to go. Cab spends decreased by an average of 41 per cent. Travel spends decreased by 50-55 per cent across Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru and this figure dropped to a further 86 per cent average in April. Shop till you drop? According to CRED, there was a noticeable decline in e-commerce and physical shopping across all cities during this time, this is understandable as the functioning of offline retailers, including all malls which continue to remain shut, andonline marketplaces were affected during the lockdown period. E-commerce spends increased marginally when the lockdown was announced, but then dropped significantly during the lockdown as only essential goods were sold for a majority of this period. In April, e-commerce dropped by an average of 90 per cent and a similar figure was seen for physical shopping. Health is wealth Mumbai clearly prioritised spends on their health when the lockdown was announced, with spikes in both insurance and medical spending. In March, insurance spends rose across all three cities, with the highest spike noticed in Mumbai where spends increased by 23 per cent, followed by Delhi by 11 per cent and Bengaluru by 9 per cent. Medical spends rose in Mumbai by 100 per cent and Bangalore by just 14 per cent. Spends in Delhi remained flatduring this time.
