This really should surprise no one. Microsoft did an almost obscene level of user testing as it was developing Windows 8 - 1.24 billion hours of testing across 190 countries, <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-10805_3-57540241-75/after-1.2-billion-hours-of-user-testing-windows-8-is-good-to-go/">Microsoft said. </a>
And throughout all that, users, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/windows-8-could-be-another-vista-but-it-wont-kill-microsoft-2012-6">as well as influential Windows bloggers,</a> told the company repeatedly that they didn't like the new touch-screen interface.
The question is, what is Microsoft's new CEO going to do about it? We are hoping the answer is "scrap it and try again," and not "dig in and insist the world learn to love Windows 8."
But <a href="http://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/1xvbsm/windows_8_sells_100_million_fewer_copies_than/cff3y35">a long post on Reddit</a> from a person claiming to be on the Windows 8 design team might be a worrisome sign.
Remember, Windows 8 has two personalities. It has a "desktop" side, which is basically a version of Windows 7. It also has the Windows 8 side designed for a touch screens. 
When you buy a new Windows 8 PC, the default is to boot to the Windows 8 side. At first, you couldn't turn that part off and choose to use the Windows 7 side exclusively. Now, with Windows 8.1, you can, but the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/8-secret-features-in-windows-81-2013-7#avoid-the-modern-mode-altogether-and-go-back-to-desktop-mode-7">setting that lets you boot to Windows 7 is kind of hard to find</a>.
This person says the reason Microsoft "forced" Windows 8 on people by default was because the company thought it was easier to use for the average PC user:

For instance, sometimes a flick up while in Internet Explorer brings up a list of open tabs. Other times that same gesture brings up a list of frequently used websites.
The self-described Microsoft designer recognizes that Windows 8 isn't perfect for average users. But this person thinks Microsoft is sticking with the basic plan.
Right now we still have a lot of work to do on making Metro seem tasty for those casual users, and that's going to divert our attention for a while. But once it's purring along smoothly, we'll start making the desktop more advanced.
In April, Microsoft will host its annual developers conference, Build, and we hope to hear more details about Windows 9. We're hoping that Windows 9 is to Windows 8 what Windows 7 was to Vista: a seriously big fix.

I want to talk about why we chose Metro as the default instead of the desktop, and why this is good in the long run - especially for power users.
...but not in the way you might think.
At this point you're probably expecting me to say that it's designed for keyboard execution, or some thing about improved time trials for launching programs, or some other way of me trying to convince you that Metro is actually useful. I've talked about those in the past extensively on reddit, but for this discussion let's throw that all out the window. For this discussion, assume that Metro is shit for power users (even if you don't believe it to be).
Now that we're on common ground, let's dive into the rabbit hole. Metro is a content consumption space. It is designed for casual users who only want to check facebook, view some photos, and maybe post a selfie to instagram. It's designed for your computer illiterate little sister, for grandpas who don't know how to use that computer dofangle thingy, and for mom who just wants to look up apple pie recipes. It's simple, clear, and does one thing (and only one thing) relatively easily. That is what Metro is. It is the antithesis of a power user. A power user is a content creator. They have multiple things open on multiple monitors - sometimes with multiple virtual machines with their own nested levels of complexity.
"But wait," you're thinking, "You said Metro is good for power users, yet now you're saying it's the worst for them, what gives?"
Before Windows 8 and Metro came along, power users and casual users - the content creators and the content consumers - had to share the same space. It was like a rented tuxedo coat - something that somewhat fit a wide variety of people. It wasn't tailored, because any aggressive tailoring would make it fit one person great, but would have others pulling at the buttons. Whatever feature we wanted to add into Windows, it had to be something that was simple enough for casual users to not get confused with, but also not dumbed down enough to be useless to power users. Many, MANY features got cut because of this.
A great example is multiple desktops. This has been something that power users have been asking for for over a decade now. OSX has it, Linux has it, even OS/2 Warp has it. But Windows doesn't. The reason for this is because every time we try and add it to the desktop, we run user tests; and every time we find that the casual users - a much larger part of our demographic than Apple's or Linux's - get confused by it. So the proposal gets cut and power users suffer.
Our hands were bound, and our users were annoyed with their rented jackets. So what did we do? We separated the users into two groups. Casual and Power. We made two separate playgrounds for them. All the casual users would have their own new and shiny place to look at pictures of cats - Metro. The power users would then have free reign over their native domain - the desktop.
So why make Metro the default? And why was there no way to boot to desktop in Windows 8.0?
The short answer is because casual users don't go exploring. If we made desktop the default as it has always been, and included a nice little start menu that felt like home, the casual users would never have migrated to their land of milk and honey. They would still occupy the desktop just as they always had, and we would have been stuck in square one. So we forced it upon them. We drove them to it with goads in their sides. In 8.1, we softened the points on the goads by giving users an option to boot directly to desktop.
Now that the casual users are aware of their new pasture, we can start tailoring. It will be a while before the power users start seeing the benefits of this (that's why I said they'd benefit in the long run). Right now we still have a lot of work to do on making Metro seem tasty for those casual users, and that's going to divert our attention for a while. But once it's purring along smoothly, we'll start making the desktop more advanced. We'll add things that we couldn't before. Things will be faster, more advanced, and craftier than they have in the past - and that's why Metro is good for power users.

At the start of the year, I decided that I would become America's bravest woman. I would frame some art on my own.Getting something framed professionally is super expensive, so I was convinced that this would be a herculean task — requiring precision and craft to justify such a high price tag. Ultimately, the endeavor turned out to be painless. With a handful of frames I bought online and, briefly, the help of a butter knife, I accomplished in an hour what I'd assumed would take me all day. My framing job is not awesome, but it's fine.I recognize this sounds a little silly, but it did make me seriously wonder why getting something framed professionally was so costly. I've spent a lot of money to get art put behind glass in the past, and my DIY job didn't seem so vastly different.Take a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@joncomulada5/video/7229769414420286763">spin</a> around the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@dmichaelburke/video/7068703390909418794?lang=en">internet</a>, and it's clear that I'm not the only one with some questions about framing. Have we all just been duped by Big Frame? Or, worse, by Little Frame Down the Street? To get a sense of what's going on here, I reached out to some people in the business, and for one thing, they've all heard this question before."People come in, I'll quote them, and they'll say, 'Oh, my God, the frame is more expensive than the piece,'" Hope Dye, the owner of Artful Framer Studios in Chicago, said. That's especially true if they've got a cheap print they bought online. The dizzying number of options means framers can offer people more and more and more without those people knowing whether it's something they really need. After spending some time talking to pros on the phone, I started to wonder whether the Mexico Olympics poster I'd framed myself would someday be ruined because it didn't have whatever fancy glass to protect it from the sun — before I remembered it didn't hang in the sunlight and I really didn't care about it that much.<hr />There were some <a target="_blank" href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/pamdanziger/2019/01/04/custom-picture-framing-is-too-expensive-framebridge-has-a-fix-for-that/#:~:text=IBISWorld%20estimates%20there%20are%20fewer,Level%20Framed%20and%20Art.com.">9,000 local framing shops</a> in the US as of 2018. If you don't frame things often, you don't really have a sense of what things should cost, so walking into one of these shops can feel overwhelming, with hundreds, even thousands, of options. There's generally no available price list to get a sense of what you may be in for, so you have to get a quote. That means it's you, a framer, and a half-hour consultation where you hope for the best — and their honesty."The downside of the infinite possibilities of custom framing is that means there's infinite possibilities of price," said Sven Olsen, Michaels' senior director of Michaels Custom Framing, part of the national craft-goods chain.When it comes to materials, there are three main components in play: the moldings, the mats, and the glazing. The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inflation-rising-prices-corporate-profits-markups-surging-record-pace-study-2022-6">pricing of those materials</a> varies widely. Kevin Ivester, the owner of East Side Picture Framing in Austin, told me that molding — the side borders of the frame — could cost anywhere from $10 to $300 a foot. A basic black stick of wood is priced quite differently from something that's gold-leafed and hand-carved. His shop offers 1,500 frame samples and 300 mat-board samples. "There are so many variables that go into framing. You can get a very straightforward frame, and you can make them very complicated," he said.Frame shops keep some moldings on premises, but they have to order many from outside vendors, hence how they can offer so many options. For preservation purposes, framers will suggest acid-free, lignin-free materials so the art won't get damaged, which adds to the cost. And then there's the glazing — acrylic, regular glass, UV protectant, antireflective, or even museum level. The size of the piece matters, as does the quality of materials. "Glass is incredibly expensive, and part of it is because it's made specifically for picture framing. You wouldn't put that type of glass on your house," Ivester said.Dye, who has been in the framing business for eight years and bought her own shop in 2022, said there's about a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-prices-inflation-soaring-corporate-greed-profits-margins-wages-jobs-2023-4">threefold markup on materials</a> at most stores, though for really expensive moldings, she usually does 1 ½ or two times so it will be accessible for customers. Framing isn't as simple as the materials alone, and other costs are added on top. Custom framing is labor-intensive — shop owners have to pay their employees, and the people I talked to emphasized that it's skilled labor. There's the cost of rent and equipment, too. She said that what's also rolled into the price is her expertise and design sense. "You're paying for someone who has a good eye," she said.<hr />When you talk to smaller framers, there are, of course, some elephants in the room: much-larger framing operations, such as Michaels and the online company Framebridge. National competitors have advantages of scale, convenience, and price. They're better able to buy in bulk and leverage their scale, which helps them keep costs down. Still, they're not especially cheap.Most customers don't walk into a Michaels store thinking they need a custom frame. They figure they can grab a ready-made one off the shelf. But premade options are limited, and they often wind up at the custom counter, facing a similar situation to the one they'd find in a local shop. "There are a lot of decisions that can be made with custom framing," Olsen from Michaels said. Those decisions can add to the budget, but the best-case scenario is a "collaborative" conversation so there are no pricing surprises at the end, he said.Framebridge, the direct-to-consumer framing company that's been around for about a decade, tries to cut out the sticker shock by listing its prices online. The costs are still a little shocking — a basic black frame starts at $75. Julia Lovett, the director of product at Framebridge, told me that the company worked with premium materials, which are expensive, and brought up the expertise and craftsmanship that goes into the work. Framebridge offers just 89 frame styles, which allows it to offer a lower price point since it's not ordering materials piecemeal from various vendors."We offer a more limited assortment," she said. "We try to strike the balance between having something for everyone, something to flatter every piece, something for every style, and not being too overwhelming."<hr />Naturally, many of the people I spoke with had some thoughts about what the other operations were up to. Lovett warned about the opacity of different design treatments and tricks for getting people worried about the quality of materials, noting that there's upselling and upcharging in the space. With no prices on the wall, customers really can't get an idea of the cost before getting a quote.Dye, the Chicago shop owner, told me she often could and did offer a better price than Michaels. She pointed out that unlike Framebridge, she's not shipping valuable pieces of art around the country."When you're working with the smaller mom-and-pop shops, you really develop a relationship," she said. "There's a trust there."Ivester from Austin said that if you wanted to pop a poster in the mail to Framebridge, fine, but he doesn't really see it as being in the same category as he is. "I don't really even view them as my competition. They just simply cannot do all the things that we do for our clients," he said. With bigger companies, you don't get as much insight into who's working on the piece and their level of expertise.Some framers were sensitive when it came to inquiries about direct margins and prices, which was unhelpful to the impression that there might be some price gouging going on. The day after I spoke with a manager at a midsize framing shop in Brooklyn, I followed up to ask about general price ranges on moldings and mats. He responded by telling me it was considered confidential and asked me to delete our conversation.In industries dominated by a number of small businesses where there is information asymmetry, things can feel like a rip-off. People can find themselves in similar situations when dealing with, say, a roofing company or a funeral home. Maybe you're getting a good deal, but sometimes you're getting taken for a ride, and it's hard to tell the difference.Given the cost and the fundamental challenges in determining a fair price, I somewhat awkwardly asked all the framers the question that got me on the journey in the first place: Why shouldn't people just frame things on their own? There's still a markup in just premade frames — I'm sorry, but there's no way that $20 frame I got from Amazon cost anywhere near $20 to make — but a do-it-yourself approach isn't going to break the bank.Ultimately, most told me it was a question of value. How much did the thing you want to frame cost? What about its sentimental value? Can you achieve what you want to by yourself? Fabric, for instance, is tough to deal with, so you've got to decide what you're willing to pay to avoid hanging that wrinkled commemorative basketball jersey on your wall. Some people are craftier and more design-minded than others. Some people are also lazier and would just rather pay someone to do the work for them.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.juliamackdesign.com/">Julia Mack</a>, an interior designer in Brooklyn, gave some practical advice. If it's a budget item or something homemade you don't really care about, that's a DIY moment. The same goes for if you want just a black frame and a white mat for a standard-size, inexpensive print. If you do go to a professional, have an idea of what you're willing to spend ahead of time. If the artwork cost $500, maybe commit to spending no more than $500 on framing. "Shopping around does not hurt anyone," she said. "You just have to be willing to put the time in."You may not care that much if the piece you framed is perfect. I do wonder whether someday I'll come to regret my DIY efforts, but for now, I'm pretty satisfied with the result. I told Dye that, and she, a professional, told me that's OK. "Can someone frame something themselves? Absolutely. Is it going to look as nice? Probably not," she said. By Uzmi Athar New Delhi, Apr 30 () There has been a significant increase in cybercrime against women, especially sextortion, during the COVID-19-induced lockdown with "caged criminals" targeting them online, say experts.The nationwide lockdown imposed from March 25 to April 14, and then extended to May 3, aims at preventing the spread of the novel coronavirus that has claimed 1,147 lives and infected 35,043 people in the country.According to National Commission for Women (NCW) data, 54 cybercrime complaints were received online in April in comparison to 37 complaints – received online and by post -- in March, and 21 complaints in February. The panel is taking complaints online due to the lockdown.Cyber experts, however, said the numbers are just the "tip of the iceberg"."We received a total of 412 genuine complaints of cyber abuse from March 25 till April 25. Out of these, as many as 396 complaints were serious ones from women, (and these) ranged from abuse, indecent exposure, unsolicited obscene pictures, threats, malicious emails claiming their account was hacked, ransom demands, blackmail and more," said the founder of the Akancha Foundation, Akancha Srivastava.The organisation works for education and empowerment of people by imparting knowledge on cyber safety. Srivastava said on an average she has been getting 20-25 such complaints daily, while before the lockdown the number was less than 10 per day. This is a "significant" increase, she said."This is just the frustration and anger that is coming to the fore as there is no other release right now. This is a form of frustration as they (cyber criminals) are caged right now," she said. "Men are morphing images and threatening women. There is a whole racket going on where women are getting these emails that your phone and laptop has been hacked, and if you don't deposit money my account I will send your morphed images, and share it with all your contacts," Srivastava added.Vineet Kumar, founder and president of Cyber Peace Foundation, said specially the cases of "sextortion" have increased during the lockdown.Sextortion is extorting money or sexual favours from someone by threatening to reveal evidence of their sexual activity through means like morphed images."People are getting into relationships online as they are under lockdown and sextortion cases are being reported to us," he said.Kumar said in these times people are connecting through technology but forgetting the security component."Immediately after lockdown, we saw a rise in cases of misinformation, fake news and women getting duped online when they click on malware links which gets all their information on phone, turns on the camera and microphone, and captures their intimate moments. These are then used for blackmailing," he added.Many women do not want to make official complaints in these cases, he said."Cyber Peace has been receiving complaints through its channels and it has been seen that people are reluctant in filing complaints. They want us to handle things unofficially," Kumar said. "Whatever official figure that is being quoted is just the tip of the iceberg as a majority of women do not report cybercrime because they worry about the social stigma associated with it," he said.Vandana Verma, founder of InfoSec Girls, said when the whole country is locked down, people are working from home and spending a lot of time on the internet. So, even cyber criminals are becoming innovative and craftier in their techniques, she said ."Like sending specific phishing emails or themed emails for the current COVID-19 situation to people and getting their confidential details like address, phone numbers. These emails appear to have come from legitimate sources like the government in the form of advisories when they are not at all related to the government in any form," Verma said."Creation of fake profiles, cyber bullying, online stalking are bigger challenges at this time. Insensitive comments on posts are also intimidating," she said.Verma advised that such cybercrimes can be prevented through education on technology."How to securely use the digital media, creating strong a password and spreading awareness on phishing emails, fake videos and securely sharing content on the internet can help a lot in safeguarding women," she said. NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma said often it is seen there is lack of awareness among women on where to reach out when something happens."There is cyber police in every district who they can contact. They can reach out to us also if they need help," she said.She advised women to remain careful in the cyber space. "We are talking to women on how to protect themselves in cyber space. We advice women to not share their personal pictures or details on social media as it's not safe. Women should realise that at times people known to them can also take advantage," said Verma. CSC e-Governance Services India, which holds the license for providing internet services, recorded an increase in data consumption to 4.7 terabyte (TB) as on March 30 from 2.7 TB on March 10."Based on the growth trend, data consumption on the CSC SPV network is estimated to have increased by close to 100 per cent till date," CSC SPV CEO Dinesh Tyagi told on April 5. Pinterest has <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pinterest/Halloween/" target="_blank">dedicated an entire board</a> to the Halloween costumes its users have been saving - or "pinning" - the most. Dwyane Wade mastered it too, and now Houston Rockets star James Harden is the league's most lethal Eurostepper.
Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle <a href="http://www.houstonchronicle.com/sports/rockets/article/James-Harden-A-Eurostep-above-the-rest-5961323.php#/0">wrote an article about how Harden deploys the move</a>, and it gives you a good idea why he's so unstoppable.
The Eurostep is a quick two-step change in direction move that players use while driving to the basket.
The dribbler plants one foot one way, then uses a long lateral step in the other direction to go around the defender and get an open shot.&#xa0;
Here, Dwyane Wade uses it to perfection. His first step takes him toward the middle of the court, and then the second step takes him the other direction for an easy layup:

Harden in particular has made the move impossible to defend, because he's added another feature to it: drawing fouls on players who reach for the ball as he goes around them.
Harden is averaging a league-high 26.9 points per game this season, and he leads the NBA in free throws attempted with 10 per game. With his ability to finish at the basket or get to the line, Harden has become a nightmare for defenses.
As <a href="http://www.houstonchronicle.com/sports/rockets/article/James-Harden-A-Eurostep-above-the-rest-5961323.php#/0">Harden told Feigen</a>&#xa0;he's not as explosive as Wade or other guards, so he added the Eurostep to be more crafty:
"When I first came in, I said I wasn't the most athletic guy or the quickest guy, but I can get to my spots. The Eurostep is another way to help me get to my spot if I can't jump over the defender.
"I do it to avoid the defender. If he still makes contact, hopefully I'm strong enough to hold the basketball and try to finish the play. Tough move. You just have to be crafty. Not a lot of people are crafty."
Harden often gets compared to Ginobili because they aren't athletic enough to jump over defenders. Instead, they go right around guys:

When the defense plays him tighter, however, Harden is even craftier at drawing fouls. He often extends or lifts his arms way past his body, making defenders reach and usually make contact with him to draw the foul.
Here, Harden doesn't completely evade the defender, so as he completes his second step, he holds the ball up high and takes just an extra second to draw the contact before throwing the shot up to get the foul:

Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said <a href="http://www.houstonchronicle.com/sports/rockets/article/James-Harden-A-Eurostep-above-the-rest-5961323.php">Harden's ability to draw fouls makes his version of the Eurostep unique</a>:
"He's just crafty. He's clever. Ginobili is the only guy you can try to compare, but Ginobili doesn't try to swipe the ball underneath your arms and draw fouls as much. It's unorthodox. Players are used to going for the ball. As soon as you go for the ball, James is too smart, too quick. He's going to draw the foul."
It's incredibly frustrating for opponents. If you sag off Harden, he's going to go right around you. If you play him tight, he's going to contort his body and arms into a position where you're almost forced to foul.
