 Indian Prime Minister <keyword id="969998" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narenda-Modi">Narenda Modi</keyword> is on a two-nation political tour that started from Vietnam and now <keyword id="6354642" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Modi">Modi</keyword> is in Chinese city, <keyword id="232713" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hangzhou">Hangzhou</keyword> for the crucial G20 summit. 
 
The recent past has seen a lot of tiffs between the Indian and Chinese government, be it over China's opposition to India's NSG application, or the topic of expulsion of Chinese journalists from India and how it was reported in the Chinese media. 
 
However, since there is always some scope for a healthy discussion, here are five points that PM Modi would be pushing, as per a TNN report: 
 
Pakistan 
 
The recent unrest in Kashmir saw Pakistan openly supporting Kashmiri terrorists and separatists against India, after which, India questioned protests in PoK over rigged elections, stating that PoK PoK belonged to India. 
 
It was then that PM Modi had warned Pakistan that India would raise its human rights violations in Balochistan in case Islamabad continues to support terrorist activities in Kashmir. 
 
Since China is a close ally to Pakistan and is seen supporting it, there are high chances that Pakistan would be a topic of discussion between India and China. 
 
China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) 
 
India has been putting a lot of pressure on Islamabad, and this could prove to be harmful to the Chinese economy. CPEC is a $46-billion project, using which China wants to gain direct access to the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean Region. It has also invested heavily in the Gwadar Port in Balochistan for this very purpose. 
 
A critical part of this corridor runs through PoK, and now that India has decided to reinforce its legal claims on PoK, Beijing is bound to be upset. Even though the Chinese government has steered away from commenting on this, some sources say that Chinese think tanks have suggested China-Pakistan taking a joint military action against India so that the CPEC project is unhindered. 
 
South China Sea dispute 
 
This territorial dispute has made China stand against several nations, and this is benefitting India. 
 
After an international tribunal ruled in favour of India, that Beijing's claims in the South China Sea were not justified, India had issued a statement in which it made a direct appeal to all nations involved in the conflict to "exercise self-restraint," so that the dispute is not complicated further. 
 
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi was on his visit to India recently, when he said that it was up to New Delhi to support Beijing on the South China Sea dispute or not, also making sure that New Delhi does not raise the South China Sea issue anywhere. 
 
India's budding friendships with South East Asia countries 
 
Vietnam is also involved in the South China Sea dispute, and Modi will be visiting it before China, where he would be signing a contract for the supply of four patrol vessels to the Vietnamese military. He could also discuss defence cooperation with Vietnam, much to China's chagrin. 
 
India is increasingly getting friendly with other countries in the South East Asia, and China will most likely see these emerging friendships as a not-entirely-friendly alliance. 
 
India's infrastructure development along China border 
 
Till almost a decade back, India had not built any infrastructure alongside Chinese border, making sure that Chinese be able to advance slowly in case Beijing invades India. However, China built up high-quality roads and rail links along the 3500-km border with India. 
 
Now that India is also looking to push infrastructure projects there, China has said that these efforts would only escalate tensions between the two countries. It was only recently that Beijing criticized India's decision to deploy the advanced, supersonic cruise missile system BrahMos on its border with China, claiming that this deployment was "the opposite" of peace and stability. This too could be a topic of discussion, given that China on its part has done heavy military deployment in that area.

PM Modi in China for G20 summit, and here is what he’ll be talking about

<ul><li>The <keyword id="6366068" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="international-monetary-fund">International Monetary Fund</keyword> announced yesterday that it had reached an agreement with the government of <keyword id="3001" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pakistan">Pakistan</keyword> for a three-year loan programme worth $6 billion. </li><li>Discussions have been going on for a while. In October 2018, the fund’s managing director, Christine Lagarde, confirmed that an <keyword id="6355408" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="imf">IMF</keyword> team would be sent to Pakistan to discuss the terms of the <keyword id="6374681" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bailout">bailout</keyword>. </li><li>The last time Pakistan secured a loan package from the IMF was in 2013, when it received $6.7 billion. </li><li>The funding amount was expected to be higher this time. However, thanks to billions of dollars worth of loans from China, Saudi Arabia and the UAE in the last few months, Pakistan has been able to plug its external financing shortfall and refinance loans.</li></ul>The International Monetary Fund <a href="https://www.imf.org/en/News/Articles/2019/05/12/pr19157-IMF-Reaches-Staff-Level-Agreement-on-Economic-Policies-with-Pakistan-for-a-Three-Year-EFF">announced</a> yesterday that it had reached an agreement with the government of Pakistan for a three-year loan programme worth $6 billion. This is Pakistan’s 13th such bailout programme with the fund to date. It is subject to the approval of the IMF’s Executive Board. Discussions have been going on for a while. Talks with the IMF began soon after Pakistan’s new Prime Minister <keyword id="14676" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Imran-Khan">Imran Khan</keyword> came to power last August. Khan inherited an economy weighed down by high inflation, crippling debt levels and dwindling foreign reserves. In October 2018, the fund’s managing director, Christine Lagarde, <a href="https://www.rferl.org/a/imf-sending-team-pakistan-discuss-emergency-loan-package/29539404.html">confirmed </a> that an IMF team would be sent to Pakistan to discuss the terms of the bailout. Expectations of the deal were raised last week after Khan appointed Reza Baqir, an economist with the IMF, as<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/pakistan-makes-imf-economist-the-head-of-state-bank-as-it-negotiates-a-bailout/articleshow/69195847.cms"> the new head of the Pakistan’s central bank</a>. The deal would have likely been struck a lot sooner if it weren’t for a strained negotiation process. The US had cautioned against the IMF bailout, saying that it should not be used to refinance Chinese projects or pay back loans to China. In fact, the bailout reportedly <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/pakistans-bailout-from-the-imf-hinges-on-an-examination-of-its-chinese-debt/articleshow/66213581.cms">hinged</a> on the complete disclosure and assessment of Pakistan’s debts under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The last time Pakistan secured a loan package from the IMF was in 2013, when it received <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/pakistans-bailout-from-the-imf-hinges-on-an-examination-of-its-chinese-debt/articleshow/66213581.cms">$6.7 billion</a>. The funding amount was expected to be higher this time. The International Institute of Finance, a Washington, DC-based think tank, the potential size of a three-year package at <a href="https://www.thenews.com.pk/print/380715-imf-package-for-pakistan-to-be-around-15-bn-iif">$15 billion</a>. However, thanks to billions of dollars worth of loans from <a href="https://www.dawn.com/news/1471024">China</a>, <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/economy/amid-economic-crisis-saudi-arabia-offers-pakistan-6-billion-rescue-package/1359258/">Saudi Arabia </a>and the <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-03-09/pakistan-says-it-will-get-2-billion-u-a-e-loan-soon">UAE</a> in the last few months, Pakistan has been able to plug its external financing shortfall and refinance loans. The bailout will likely require the imposition of hard austerity measures such as the welfare spending cuts, reductions in fuel subsidies, another currency devaluation and higher taxes. In fact, Pakistan will have to limit its budget deficit for 2019-2020 <a href="https://www.imf.org/en/News/Articles/2019/05/12/pr19157-IMF-Reaches-Staff-Level-Agreement-on-Economic-Policies-with-Pakistan-for-a-Three-Year-EFF">to 0.6%</a> of GDP from <a href="https://in.reuters.com/article/pakistan-economy/pakistan-central-bank-sees-2019-gdp-growth-slowing-to-35-40-percent-idINKCN1R61JE">a current level of 6-7%.</a> Pakistan has routinely failed previous IMF conditions for loans such as privatisation and deregulation, having only completed the most recent IMF programme. After months of discussions, Pakistan finally gets a $6 billion bailout from the IMF

<ul><li>A day after removing the governor of <keyword id="3001" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pakistan">Pakistan</keyword>’s central bank, Tariq Bajwa, , the country’s PM, <keyword id="14676" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Imran-Khan">Imran Khan</keyword>, has appointed his replacement: Reza Baqir, an economist with the <keyword id="6366068" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="international-monetary-fund">International Monetary Fund</keyword>. </li><li>Baqir’s appointment has come under criticism for its timing. Pakistan is in the final stages of negotiating a bailout to the tune of $6-$8 billion with the IMF -- its 13th such loan programme to date. </li><li>The IMF loan will likely require the imposition of hard austerity measures such as welfare spending cuts, another currency devaluation and higher taxes - and Pakistan needs to prove that it can go through with it. </li></ul> A day after <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/international/business/pakistan-removes-sbp-governor-fbr-chairman-amid-talks-on-imf-bailout-package/articleshow/69174582.cms">removing the governor of</a> Pakistan’s central bank, Tariq Bajwa, supposedly owing to “his performance”, the country’s government, led by Imran Khan, has appointed his replacement: Reza Baqir, an economist with the International Monetary Fund. Baqir’s appointment has come under criticism for its timing. Speaking to <a href="https://www.dawn.com/news/1480450">Dawn,</a> Raza Rabbani, a member of Pakistan’s opposition, likened it to "colonisation of Pakistan by international financial imperialists". With its foreign exchange reserves depleting, the cash-strapped and heavily indebted Pakistan is in the final stages of negotiating a bailout to the tune of $6-$8 billion with the IMF -- its 13th such loan programme to date. In fact, as talks have moved to the technical stage, a delegation of IMF officials have been in Pakistan <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/news/world/pakistan-holds-talks-with-imf-delegation-on-bailout-package/article27001263.ece">since last week</a> to reportedly finetune key parts of the package. However, the package <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/pakistans-bailout-from-the-imf-hinges-on-an-examination-of-its-chinese-debt/articleshow/66213581.cms">hinges on the examination of the debt </a>the country has taken on from <keyword id="1334" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="China">China</keyword> related to the $60 billion China-Pakistan Economic Partnership (CPEC). Which is why talks have been tense. Hence, Baqir’s appointment is likely a show of good faith as it attempts to secure the bailout. The IMF loan will likely require the imposition of hard austerity measures such as welfare spending cuts, another currency devaluation and higher taxes - and Pakistan needs to prove that it can go through with it. Bajwa was reportedly <a href="https://www.pakistantoday.com.pk/2019/05/04/dr-reza-baqir-likely-to-become-sbp-governor-sources/">not on board</a> with some conditions like a free float of the currency. The US has cautioned against the IMF bailout, saying that it should not be used to refinance Chinese projects or for Pakistan to pay back its loans to China. Pakistan has been negotiating the IMF package ever since the new government came to power in August 2018. During the last nine months, the country’s external financing shortfall has been tied over with generous loans from China, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Pakistan’s last IMF programme was in 2013 - 2016, when it secured a loan of $4.2 billion. This was the country’s first successful completion of an IMF programme. He <a href="https://tribune.com.pk/story/1808950/1-china-categorically-rejects-islamabad-xinjiang-criticism-reports/">discussed</a> his country's economic partnership with China instead.Pakistan is one of the largest recipients of Chinese aid and infrastructure contracts. <a href="https://tribune.com.pk/story/1880511/1-will-continue-provide-assistance-economic-social-development-pakistan-china/">Loans and infrastructure contracts</a> have been a lifeline to the Pakistani economy, which faces a growing mountain of national and foreign debt."In this doom and gloom which we inherited, the Chinese have been a breath of fresh air for us," Khan told Turkey's TRT World news channel. Pakistan abruptly stopped calling out China's mass oppression of Muslims. Critics say Beijing bought its silence

The recent past has seen a lot of tiffs between the Indian and Chinese government, be it over China’s opposition to India’s NSG application, or the topic of expulsion of Chinese journalists from India and how it was reported in the Chinese media. 
 
However, since there is always some scope for a healthy discussion, here are five points that PM Modi would be pushing, as per a TNN report: 
 
Pakistan 
 
The recent unrest in Kashmir saw Pakistan openly supporting Kashmiri terrorists and separatists against India, after which, India questioned protests in PoK over rigged elections, stating that PoK PoK belonged to India. 
 
It was then that PM Modi had warned Pakistan that India would raise its human rights violations in Balochistan in case Islamabad continues to support terrorist activities in Kashmir. 
 
Since China is a close ally to Pakistan and is seen supporting it, there are high chances that Pakistan would be a topic of discussion between India and China. 
 
<keyword id="1934950" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="China-Pakistan-economic-corridor">China-Pakistan Economic Corridor</keyword> (CPEC) 
 
India has been putting a lot of pressure on Islamabad, and this could prove to be harmful to the Chinese economy. CPEC is a $46-billion project, using which China wants to gain direct access to the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean Region. It has also invested heavily in the Gwadar Port in Balochistan for this very purpose. 
 
A critical part of this corridor runs through PoK, and now that India has decided to reinforce its legal claims on PoK, Beijing is bound to be upset. Even though the Chinese government has steered away from commenting on this, some sources say that Chinese think tanks have suggested China-Pakistan taking a joint military action against India so that the CPEC project is unhindered. 
 
<keyword id="430735" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="South-China-Sea">South China Sea</keyword> dispute 
 
This territorial dispute has made China stand against several nations, and this is benefitting India. 
 
After an international tribunal ruled in favour of India, that Beijing’s claims in the South China Sea were not justified, India had issued a statement in which it made a direct appeal to all nations involved in the conflict to “exercise self-restraint,” so that the dispute is not complicated further. 
 
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi was on his visit to India recently, when he said that it was up to New Delhi to support Beijing on the South China Sea dispute or not, also making sure that New Delhi does not raise the South China Sea issue anywhere. 
 
India’s budding friendships with South East Asia countries 
 
Vietnam is also involved in the South China Sea dispute, and Modi will be visiting it before China, where he would be signing a contract for the supply of four patrol vessels to the Vietnamese military. He could also discuss defence cooperation with Vietnam, much to China’s chagrin. 
 
India is increasingly getting friendly with other countries in the South East Asia, and China will most likely see these emerging friendships as a not-entirely-friendly alliance. 
 
India’s infrastructure development along China border 
 
Till almost a decade back, India had not built any infrastructure alongside Chinese border, making sure that Chinese be able to advance slowly in case Beijing invades India. However, China built up high-quality roads and rail links along the 3500-km border with India. 
 
Now that India is also looking to push infrastructure projects there, China has said that these efforts would only escalate tensions between the two countries. It was only recently that Beijing criticized India’s decision to deploy the advanced, supersonic cruise missile system BrahMos on its border with China, claiming that this deployment was “the opposite” of peace and stability. This too could be a topic of discussion, given that China on its part has done heavy military deployment in that area.

Pakistan’s fiscal and trade deficits have skyrocketed as imports have far exceeded exports, tax collection has been poor and the currency has already been devalued four times since December 2017. The country has also been saddled with billions of dollars worth of debt as a result of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a $62 billion infrastructure programme spearheaded by China. Khan is wary of raising funds from a financial institution like the IMF, which has bailed Pakistan out many times before in the past, owing to the stringent conditions that come with such a programme such as - spending restrictions and a limit on bond issues. His party, Tehreek-e-Insaf, has, instead, suggested it could raise funds from China or Middle Eastern allies or get Pakistani citizens abroad to subscribe to a government bond issue. For its part, the IMF, along with the White House, have been wary that a bailout for Pakistan could be used by the government to pay back its Chinese loans. Meanwhile, Chinese banks are also wary at the prospect of extending further loans to Pakistan owing to the currency crisis and volatility in emerging markets. In a heartening sign for the new prime minister, remittances in July were up by 21% to $1.9 billion in July 2018, partly owing to the country’s tax amnesty scheme for foreign assets. Most of the country’s remittances come from Gulf countries like Saudi Arabia and the UAE, and with oil prices having regained momentum in the recent past, the growth in remittances is likely to continue. Khan will look to take advantage of this. As he embarks on a five-year term, he will likely woo as many overseas Pakistanis as he can with repatriation and investment schemes. His government’s ability to spend and manage the country might just depend on it.

India pushing back China in race to collect Lanka port assets

 "By challenging China over the <keyword id="46274" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Taiwan">Taiwan</keyword> question, India is playing with fire. At a time when new US President <keyword id="6354484" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Donald-Trump">Donald Trump</keyword> has put the brakes on challenging China over the Taiwan question, agreeing to change course and respecting the "one China" policy, India stands out as a provocateur. High-level visits between India and Taiwan are not very frequent, so why did India invite the Taiwan delegation to visit at this time?," state-run Global Times said in an op-ed article titled 'New Delhi will suffer losses if it plays Taiwan card'. 
 It is the first such visit since the Taiwanese President <keyword id="2255237" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tsai-Ing-wen">Tsai Ing-wen</keyword> administration took office, it said. 
 
Tsai, who won on elections last year is a strong supporter of Taiwan's independence from China. 
 
"Some Indians view the Taiwan question as an Achilles' Heel of the mainland. It stubbornly misinterprets the flagship project of the One Belt, One Road Initiative that will benefit countries along the route, including India. As the corridor passes through the disputed <keyword id="6354495" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="kashmir">Kashmir</keyword>, some Indian strategists have advised the Modi government to play the Taiwan card" it said.

China raises concern over Taiwan delegation’s India visit; says India is playing with fire

The results of Pakistan’s national elections are yet to be finalised, but it looks like <keyword id="14676" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Imran-Khan">Imran Khan</keyword>’s Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) is set to win the most seats in the National Assembly, paving the way for the former captain of the Pakistani cricket team to become the country’s next prime minister. Given the backing Khan has from the army, some have already declared that his electoral victory was assured. This election is a significant one. Not just for Pakistan, which is witnessing only the second consecutive transition of power between civilian governments in its 71-year history, but also for <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>. The new prime minister will set the tone for the country’s relationship with India for the next five years. The former Prime Minister <keyword id="6576" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nawaz-Sharif">Nawaz Sharif</keyword>, currently in jail on corruption charges, was a strong proponent of better ties with India, something the Pakistani military was reportedly against. While it might be too early to predict how the India-Pakistan relationship will progress over the next five years, and if at all, here is what one can expect from Imran Khan if he becomes prime minister. A potential improvement in trade ties In the buildup to elections, Imran Khan has been vocal about the sorry state of Pakistan’s finances. At PKR10.6 trillion, the country’s debt is around <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-05-30/imf-bailout-looms-for-pakistan-as-debt-surge-raises-alarm">31% of its GDP</a>, and is increasing even more due to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). As part of his “New Pakistan” platform, he has pledged to fix the economy and provide better infrastructure and jobs. As a possible solution to the problem, Khan has advocated for <a href="http://www.dnaindia.com/world/report-imran-khan-pakistan-is-bankrupt-better-india-ties-will-boost-trade-2640517">a stronger trade partnership</a> with India, which could mean that the country gets designated with the Non-Discriminatory Market Access (NDMA) once he’s elected. The PTI’s manifesto has called for strategic talks with India on a host of issues including trade. This does, however, marks a complete about-turn from the party’s stance in November 2016, when it called for <a href="https://www.firstpost.com/world/imran-khans-tehreek-e-insaf-calls-for-pakistan-to-sever-trade-ties-with-india-3127470.html">an end to trade ties</a> with India after a skirmish at the Kashmir border which resulted in the deaths of 13 people. A less-conciliatory approach on the Kashmir issue While Khan recognises that the Kashmir issue is a huge impediment to a mutually beneficial Indo-Pak relationship, he hasn’t offered anything substantial in the way of a solution and has made no mention of the government’s funding of proxy terrorist outfits. He has toed the line on the Kashmir issue, choosing to echo the oft-quoted “need for peace” and conflict resolution based on proposals from the UN Security Council. The Pakistani army’s disapproval of Nawaz Sharif’s conciliatory approach to the Kashmir issue can give us a clue to what Khan’s policy will be. He could very likely end up taking a hardliner approach after caving in to pressure from the military establishment. Conversely, he could end up taking a more cooperative approach in the interest of stronger trade ties. However, the Pakistani army’s interests lie in continued tensions along the Kashmir border, which justifies high defense spending. The maintenance of the status quo Even though Imran Khan founded the PTI with the goal of transforming Pakistan, his drubbing in the 2013 elections caused him to adopt a pro-military and pro-Islamist stance - a political maneuver that has paid off this year. While he lacks a strong political philosophy, the army’s tacit endorsement and public’s disillusionment with PTI’s rival parties has helped him win political favour. But he lacks experience, and the strings of his government will likely end up being pulled by the army. In short, there doesn’t seem to be any real change on the cards for the India-Pakistan relationship. As the country’s prime minister, Khan’s foreign policy will be in the vein of his predecessors. He will make overtures to neighbours like India and try and make progress on issues like trade and connectivity, but only with the approval of the “deep state”. In Pakistan, prime ministers may come and go and political parties may rise and fall, but the army remains. As a result, so does the Indo-Pak relationship.

FATF works with the nation states to encourage some legislative changes and reforms in the sectors discussed above. Also, FATF provides policy recommendations that comply with the international standards in the line of combating money laundering, proliferation of the weapons of mass destruction, and terrorism funding. Since 1990, FATF has revised its recommendations four times. FATF Member Nations The official website of FATF says the organization has 39 members. The members of the FATF represent major financial centers around the world. What is FATF Blacklist? FATF Blacklist refers to the FATF list of "Non-Cooperative Countries or Territories" (NCCTs). The OECD Blacklist has been published from the year 2000 and this list consists of the names of the countries that are non-cooperative with regard to the global measures to combat money laundering and terrorism financing. The FATF updates this blacklist regularly by adding or deleting the entries made. The case of Pakistan and FATF Blacklist The FATF review entered Pakistan in the grey list in June 2018. The organization gave 27 action plans for the country to be fulfilled before September 2019 for being considered to get the country out of the grey list. The recent reviews have discovered that the country could only fulfill 7 conditions out of the 27 which will mean a bad performance by Pakistan in the lines of addressing the AML/CFT deficiencies. What can be expected during the FATF meeting in Paris on October 18, 2019? The FATF meeting in Paris on October 18, 2019 will decide what has to happen with the grey listing of Pakistan. The three possibilities in front of the country would be to get out of the grey list, to continue in the grey list or in the worst case, enter the black list. Only if three countries support the motion, Pakistan has chances of not entering the blacklist. In order to get out of the grey list, Pakistan will need the support of not less than 15 countries, which might not come through this time. So, the greatest chances are there for the country to be continued in the grey list. Implications of grey / black listing for Pakistan At a time when Pakistan is already facing a severe economic crisis, grey listing of the country will take a further toll on the country. It will make borrowing of money from other countries a difficult thing for Pakistan. The only choice for Pakistan could be to request for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for help. If this has to come through, Pakistan will be forced to share the complete details about its foreign funding including China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), the Chinese funded project. If this happens, it will create a serious setback for both China and Pakistan as this project has been kept as a secrecy till date for some ulterior reasons. Summary of FATF Statements from 2012 FATF February 2012 statement identified 23 countries that had not implemented the FATF standards. The list said the countries that committed and addressing the AML/CFT deficiencies included Algeria, Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Bangladesh, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Morocco, Namibia, Nepal, Nicaragua, Sudan, Tajikistan, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkmenistan, Venezuela, and Zimbabwe. The countries that had committed, but did not make sufficient progress included Ecuador, Philippines, Vietnam, and Yemen. The 2012 FATF list also listed 17 countries as high-risk and non-cooperative including Iran, North Korea, Bolivia, Cuba, Ethiopia, Ghana, Indonesia, Kenya, Myanmar, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sao Tome and Principe, Sri Lanka, Syria, Tanzania, Thailand, and Turkey. FATF June 2013 statement listed 14 countries that were said to have strategic deficiencies coming as risk to the international financial system including Iran, North Korea, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Kenya, Myanmar, Pakistan, São Tomé and Príncipe, Syria, Tanzania, Turkey, Vietnam, and Yemen. The list also mentioned that the above said countries had not made sufficient progress with regard to addressing the deficiencies and had not committed to an action plan. FATF October 2013 statement mentioned the names of 13 countries that had strategic AML/CFT deficiencies and had not made the desired progress in rectifying the deficiencies or committing to an action plan. The names of the countries included Iran, North Korea, Algeria, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Kenya, Myanmar, Tanzania, Turkey, and Yemen. FATF February 2014 statement listed 11 countries that posed a risk to the international financial system including Iran, North Korea, Algeria, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Syria, Turkey, and Yemen. FATF June 2014 statement listed 6 countries that did not make sufficient progress in line with rectifying the AML/CFT deficiencies including Iran, North Korea, Algeria, Ecuador, Indonesia, and Myanmar. FATF February 2015 statement listed 6 counties that had made a significant progress with regard to improving their AML/CFT regime and said these countries were no longer subject to the FATF monitoring process. The countries included Cambodia, Kuwait, Namibia, Nicaragua, Pakistan, and Zimbabwe. The FATF October 2015 statement listed three counties including Iran, North Korea and Myanmar as non-cooperative jurisdictions and high risk countries with strategic deficiencies. February 2016 FATF statement dropped Panama from the grey list and called the two countries namely Iran and North Korea to apply counter-measures. Through the FATF February 2017 statement, the FATF published the following concern regarding North Korea saying, “The FATF remains concerned by the DPRK’s failure to address the significant deficiencies in its anti‑money laundering and combating the financing of terrorism (AML/CFT) regime and the serious threat this poses to the integrity of the international financial system. The FATF urges the DPRK to immediately and meaningfully address its AML/CFT deficiencies. Further, FATF has serious concerns with the threat posed by DPRK’s illicit activities related to the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) and its financing.” In November 2017, Uganda was removed from the FATF review process since the country had improved its AML/CFT regime. On the same grounds, Bosnia and Herzegovina were removed from the list in February 2018 and Iraq and Vanuatu were removed from the list in June 2018. The June 2018 Public Statement by FATF expressed its disappointment over Iran’s failure to implement its action plan to rectify the AML/CFT deficiencies. For a long time, US used to be the largest direct foreign investor in Pakistan but slowly, China has been displacing it from this position. In turn, Pakistan has been showing incessant support for China’s ‘One Belt, One Road’ trade route, a project worth billions of dollars that would revamp old infrastructure. 
 
Over the time, we have seen the relations between the US and Pakistan going haywire and in the meantime, China has been working on its ties with the bordering nation. Comparing the investments from both countries, Pakistan saw direct investment of $505 million from US in the period from July 2013 to January 2017, while China’s investment stands at $1.82 billion, says data from central bank. 
 It was about two years ago that China had pledged $55 billion worth of investment in a so-called <keyword id="1934950" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="China-Pakistan-economic-corridor">China-Pakistan Economic Corridor</keyword>. 
 
"As the US looks inward, China is reaching out," Bilal Khan, a senior economist at Standard Chartered Plc in Karachi told <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-04-12/china-s-silk-road-push-in-pakistan-edges-out-u-s-investments">Bloomberg</a>. "Against this backdrop, the US could steadily loose its share in FDI to Pakistan as China's rises." 
 
Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has planned to boost the country’s economic growth to the highest in about a decade, and allying with China is a part of this plan. The Chinese, in turn, get to revive trade across Central Asia and into Europe via a network of railways, ports and highways through this Silk Road plan. 
 
The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor lies "right at the crossroad, of two major networks China is building" said Chen Fengying, an expert on global economy with the China Institute of Contemporary International Relations. 
 
Talking of the corporate world, a record 77 Chinese companies have registered in Pakistan over the last three years, as per data from the Securities and Exchange Commission in Islamabad. 
 
Pakistan is the only country that China calls an ‘all-weather strategic partner’, possibly hinting at its unconditional support under all conditions. 
 
Talking of US-Pakistan relations, the two countries are moving further apart.

"It is moving slowly down," said Shaista Tabassum, chairwoman of the international relations department at the University of Karachi. "CPEC has many economic benefits coming, which Pakistan expected the United States should have given to it." 
 
The reasons behind these tensed relations could be found in Pakistan being accused of harboring militants that carry out attacks in Afghanistan and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/India-must-be-worried-about-Chinas-46-billion-gift-to-Pakistan-Know-why/articleshow/46997631.cms">India</a>, for which the US demands action. Pakistan, on the other hand, vehemently denies these allegations.

Then there is US President Donald Trump, who might <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/politics/America-to-stop-its-aid-toPakistan-withholds-Sharif-visit-to-Washington-if-terrorism-policies-notterminated/articleshow/48622617.cms">completely cut down</a> economic and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/politics/Pentagon-to-not-give-Pakistan-any-money-for-military-reimbursements/articleshow/53539622.cms">military funding </a>to Pakistan, the sixth largest recipient of American aid. 
 However, Pakistan's central bank chief spokesman Abid Qamar has expressed hopes that China's confidence and inflows into Pakistan will encourage other countries to do the same, thus reviving the interest of foreign investors in <keyword id="1076041" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Pakistan-economy">Pakistan economy</keyword>.

Moreover, Chinese developments continue the flow of Chinese labor and supply into Pakistan, which provides China with an economic boost.Pakistan also plans to reap the benefits from closer ties to China.McCarthy said Pakistan uses its alliance with China as a "counterbalance" to the US and its main foe, India. And while China doesn't provide huge amounts of aid to Pakistan, it does provide "solid economic assistance" in the form of projects and infrastructure.More importantly, China has Pakistan's back, according to McCarthy: "Unlike the US, China doesn't comment on human rights, and has no particular stance on Pakistan's human rights issues."The US has strongly condemned Islamabad's alleged support for Haqqani militants, who are aligned with the Afghan Taliban.Still, McCarthy believes that while Pakistan and China's relationship will grow stronger as a byproduct of cuts in US aid, the US still plays an important role to Pakistan, despite major strains."There's no doubt that the US relationship with Pakistan is not that healthy at the moment.
