The CoWIN mobile app along with alternative methods to register — the UMANG and Aarogya Setu mobile apps — crashed the moment registrations opened up at 4 p.m. The CoWIN website wasn’t sending out one-time-passwords (OTPs) initially either, but was back up in action within minutes. However, that’s about all the good news that there is. In order to get your OTP, you need to go to the main CoWIN portal, click on the registration button, enter your phone number. <ul><li>An SMS worm claiming to help users in India book a slot to get the COVID-19 vaccine is making the rounds.</li><li>The malicious app link being circulated over text messages enables authorised access to private accounts, exposes personal data and has the ability to delete data without the victims knowledge.</li><li>New variants of SMS worms are rare, but this one — and its cousins — all seem to have been created by the same developer, according to an investigation conducted by cyber risk assessment firm Cyble.</li></ul>The official CoWIN mobile app has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/apps/news/cowin-website-is-back-up-after-an-early-crash-finding-a-vaccination-slot-may-still-be-difficult/articleshow/82291583.cms">not been doing its job well</a>, which has forced users in India to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/apps/news/coders-are-coming-up-with-new-ways-to-check-for-covid-19-vaccination-slots-on-cowin/articleshow/82383284.cms">look at alternatives</a> to check for available vaccination slots or even simply register for the vaccine. While there are many solutions helping genuinely, there are others who may not necessarily be looking out for the ‘greater good’ — like a new SMS worm promising to book a vaccination slot for you, but infecting your device with malware instead. This means accessing Twitter and Facebook accounts, peeping into your photo gallery and contact list, deleting documents you may have wanted to keep around for a little bit longer and eating up your data — which can be particularly painful if you have limited data per day. The issue was initially brought to light by Malware researcher <a href="https://twitter.com/LukasStefanko/status/1387733166195150849">Lukas Stefano</a> and the <a href="https://twitter.com/malwrhunterteam/status/1387706612270440450">Malware Hunter Team</a>. In addition to tricking people into installing the SMS worm and accessing sensitive information, there is also a direct monetary cost of this whole exercise on the victim. A COVID-19 SMS malware is targeting users in India as they look for alternatives to CoWIN for vaccine registration

The government has announced a new update that enables an applicant to correct any inadvertent errors in name, year of birth and gender printed on the <keyword id="10440405" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="cowin">CoWIN</keyword> vaccination certificate. <keyword id="66720" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="users">Users</keyword> can make the correction through the CoWIN website. "Now you can make corrections to your name, year of birth and gender on your Cowin vaccination certificates if inadvertent errors have come in," the official handle of the <keyword id="8995296" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="aarogya-setu">Aarogya Setu</keyword> <keyword id="235499" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="APP">app</keyword> tweeted on Wednesday. The CoWIN vaccination certificates are used at the time of travel and helps in the access of several other premises. Earlier, the government had also allowed people who are vaccinated to update their status voluntarily on the Aarogya Setu app through a self-assessment process. Those who have got the single dose of the vaccine will get a single blue border with vaccination status on their home screen along with Aarogya Setu logo with a single tick. A 'Blue Shield' with double tick will appear on the app for those who are fully vaccinated, after 14 days of the second dose. However, coders in India are coming to the rescue. For instance, the engineering manager at PhonePe, <a href="https://twitter.com/debarko/status/1388549978721636354">Debarko De</a>, has posted a script on code hosting platform GitHub to help people in Bangalore looking for appointment slots. Agra-based software developer Amit Agarwal has created a <a href="https://twitter.com/labnol/status/1388556580325453824">COVID-19 vaccine tracker</a>, built with Google Sheets, so that people can get alerts over email whenever an appointment opens up for a particular age group within a prescribed pincode. Many are questioning whether such an endeavour is legal or not. He also created multiple groups on <a href="https://twitter.com/BertyThomas/status/1388477672901120003">Telegram</a> for those who wish to receive alerts for their respective districts. The list is not exhaustive, but does cover most of the main metropolitan regions across the country. And Thomas isn’t using the government’s API to do it. The API is only powering the alerts, not storing your information. Similar sites like <a href="http://www.getjab.in">getjab.in</a> and <a href="http://www.findslot.in">findslot.in</a> are also doing the same thing. And, the reason they’re being allowed to stick around is because users still have to login into the CoWIN platform to register. That part of the process cannot be done externally. It’s like the waiter who takes your order, ensures that it gets relayed to the chef, and then brings you your final meal. In the case of looking for CoWIN appointment slots, you’re placing your request on a website, and that website then relays it to the API, like the customer at the restaurant. The API then checks with the CoWIN portal — or the chef — before showing you the availability of slots. The Indian government opened up the CoWIN APIs to allow third party access, on April 28. They can be found on the government’s API Setu website which contains authentication, metadata, beneficiary registration, vaccination appointment and certificate APIs. With these APIs, the third party users can access information like vaccination centres, list of districts, vaccination appointments among others. There are two types of APIs -- public and protected. Using public APIs is not a problem and they’re freely available on the government site. According to the guidelines by the Union Health Ministry, Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin is the only available option for this group (between 15-18 years). All the states/union territories will get additional doses of Covaxin to administer this population. According to the Health Ministry, all the necessary protocols regarding the vaccination of children aged between 15-18 years will be strictly followed. Beneficiaries will have to wait for half an hour after the administration of the COVID-19 dose to be monitored for Adverse Events Following Immunisation (AEFI) and then only be eligible for the second dose after 28 days. Around 145 million of the population in India have been vaccinated against COVID-19, according to the Union Health Ministry data. And around 61 million people have got their second dose of COVID-19, while more than 84 million have received their first dose. According to the data given on the CoWin platform, over 3.5 lakh children in India aged between 15-18 years have registered so far for their first dose of COVID-19 shot, as of January 2, 2022. The eligible population can register themselves on the CoWin app. The registrations had started on January 1, 2022. They also have a walk-in registration option starting from today, i.e., January 3. Here’s how to get COVID-19 vaccination certificate on WhatsApp

<ul><li>Kaspersky researchers have warned about a new <keyword id="54201" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="malware" source="Orion">malware</keyword> that is targeting gamers.</li><li>The <keyword id="12192194" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="bloodystealer" source="Orion">BloodyStealer</keyword> malware targets session data, passwords, bank card details, browser autofill data and more.</li><li>The malware also targeted account details of users on Epic Games, Steam, GOG, Origin and Bethesda.</li></ul>Cyberattacks have been increasing over the years due to an increase in online users. Now, a new <a href="https://securelist.com/bloodystealer-and-gaming-assets-for-sale/104319/">report</a> by researchers from popular cybersecurity firm Kaspersky has revealed that cybercriminals have started targeting gamers and their accounts with a new malware dubbed as BloodyStealer. The BloodyStealer malware is capable of fetching session data and passwords and cookie exfiltration. The stealer is capable of targeting bank card details, browser autofill data, screenshots from the computer, desktop and uTorrent client files and more. As per the report, the malware also targeted the session details of clients such as Epic Games, Steam, Origin, GOG, Bethesda, Telegram and VimeWorld. Some of the popular titles available on these stores include GTA V, Fortnite, Battlefield, FIFA 2022 among others. As per the researcher, the malware was first spotted in March 2021 after an advertisement for a malware named as BloodyStealer was noticed on a Russian underground forum. The author asked potential customers to contact him using Telegram. “What caught our attention is BloodyStealer’s capability to fetch information related to computer games installed on an infected system. BloodyStealer targets major online gaming platforms, such as Steam, Epic Games Store, EA Origin, etc.” said Dmitry Galov, researcher, Kaspersky. The BloodyStealer malware was priced at 700 RUB (approx. $10) for one month and a lifetime purchase was priced at 3000 RUB (approx. $40). The data scraped by the malware is sent to a command and control (C&amp;C) server which can then be accessed using Telegram or a dark web panel. “Both C&amp;C servers are placed behind Cloudflare, which hides their original IPs and provides a layer of protection against DDoS and web attacks,” added Galov. The researcher added a few tips for users to protect their gaming accounts from such malware. <ul><li>Enable two-factor authentication for all your accounts.</li><li>Purchase games from official sites only and avoid unknown third-party websites.</li><li>Avoid clicking links received in emails from unknown senders as it could be a phishing attempt.</li><li>Do not click on links directing you to external sites from game chat. Many doctors suggested that 90 days after the recovery is ideal. The US-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests that, “If you were treated for COVID-19 with monoclonal antibodies or convalescent plasma, you should wait 90 days before getting a COVID-19 vaccine.” “Those who have just suffered from COVID-19 and recovered, you have to wait for 90 days until you can take the vaccine. If you have taken one dose of the vaccine and then developed COVID-19, in that case you have to wait for 60-90 days from illness for the second dose,” Dr. Harish Chafle, consultant of pulmonology and critical care at Global Hospitals in Mumbai told Business Insider. If you have just recovered from COVID-19, experts say you don't need to join in on the rush for vaccination immediately

According to the Indian government, the interval between the first and second dose should be four to eight weeks. “Most likely, after eight weeks, you should consider your first dose to be a waste of time,” Dr Kunal Sarkar, the chief cardiac surgeon and senior vice chairman of Medica Hospital in Kolkata, told Business Insider. Dr Sarkar’s view echoes the <a href="https://pib.gov.in/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=1706597">government guidelines</a> that said that the second dose of Covishield should be administered “not later than stipulated period of 8 weeks.” While a <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(21)00528-6/fulltext">Lancet study</a> has shown that a longer interval may improve the vaccine’s efficacy, the study itself recommended a 12-week interval between doses. With Covishield, as per their trial data, even they said four weeks. Then, based on certain experiences in the UK, it was stretched to six weeks,” said Sarkar. “Now, because of the irregularity in supply, it is anybody's guess… By and large, we are afraid if it stretches beyond eight weeks or so, then will the two-dose concept still remain valid? There is no data.” In order to ensure that people who already have the first dose do not get pushed behind in the queue, the Indian government should allow for separate counters and dedicated slots for people who are eligible for the second dose.
