The four-month-old calf was wrangled in by passersby after she was seen wandering around the streets of South Brooklyn Tuesday, <a href="https://abc7ny.com/cow-loose-brooklyn-animal-sanctuary/12990562/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ABC 7 reported</a>. The calf escaped a vehicle just outside a slaughterhouse nearby, according to the outlet. <a href="https://skylandssanctuary.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Skylands Animal Sanctuary And Rescue</a> announced on Wednesday that the loose cow will officially be relocated to its facility."THIS JUST IN. THE OWNERS HAVE AGREED TO LET HER COME AND LIVE OUT HER LIFE ON THE SANCTUARY," Skylands wrote in a <a href="https://fb.watch/jr7wg5KF-t/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Facebook post.</a>The sanctuary — which has saved many animals from slaughterhouses in the past, <a href="https://abc7ny.com/escaped-sheep-wayward-slaughterhouse-escape-paterson/12888170/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">including a small herd of sheep just last month</a> — solicited help from its followers to pressure Saba Live Poultry in Brooklyn to allow the calf to live at Skylands. "We immediately offered the calf a lifelong home, but these people have easily been the least receptive to letting an animal live that I've ever dealt with," Skylands wrote in an earlier Facebook post. "Maybe the news coverage and some public sentiment will help them see this poor kid as an individual."Mike Stura, who runs Skylands, told ABC 7 that while the calf was initially sent back to the slaughterhouse after she was captured in the street, public support for her release led the slaughterhouse owners to let her go. "Even slaughterhouse workers over the years that have given me animals, much bigger animals than this one, and have taken a much bigger financial hit and have said to me that they're happy the animal came with me," Stura said. "They are happy to see one live. You know, even the people in the slaughterhouses."Now, the four-month old calf will live out her days among fellow rescued animals and livestock.

The commission will essentially be focusing on the welfare of cows while also improving their efficacy. The new initiative will work towards upscaling sustainable genetic upgradation of cow resources and find ways to enhance the production and productivity of cows. It will also look after the effective implementation of laws and the welfare schemes for cows that are already in place. Piyush Goyal, an Indian politician and the current minister of Railways, said, “Gau maata ka samman mein aur gau maata ke liye yeh sarkar kabhi peeche nahi hatte gi.” (Respecting the cow and for the cow, this government will never hold back.) It’s a direct attempt to tout to its base of hindu fundamentalist voters. Any farmers involved in animal husbandry will be given 2% subsidy through the Kisan Credit Card Scheme, and another 3% subsidy will be doled out for timely payments of loans. The increasing importance of cows The focus on cows in politics has been increasing since 2015. In fact, there are many policies designed specifically for the welfare and protection of cows in India. Just earlier this month, the Delhi government announced that it will be opening a paying guest (PG) hostels for cows. Even the opposition, the National Congress Party, promised to increase the number of cow sanctuaries and funds for the bovine animal ahead of the 5-state assembly elections in December.

It was a wonderful program, and we loved his teachers. We were also instructed that he'd be given cow's milk and Goldfish daily because that was the provided snack. We were allowed to provide our own alternative snacks each week and did. But we were starting to feel like troublesome parents.Two years later, when he started kindergarten, his teacher criticized the lunches we'd send him in with. It was wrong and prejudiced, but we were afraid of standing out anymore.It soon became clear we had to pick our battles. We couldn't be nonstop great vegans and great parents.We acquiesced first on the Goldfish. He was the only kid not eating Goldfish at school snack time, so we let him join in. Then he had cheese pizza at a school party. I didn't want him to be the one kid not eating, the kid everyone laughed at. However, we also emphasized why we don't eat animals and that it's OK for others to do so.<h2>It's not just about food</h2>As he grew, the challenges became more complex. Veganism goes beyond food. Some vegans are against pets, zoos, or aquariums. But our son was obsessed with animals. How could we encourage his passions and teach our values? We go to zoos and aquariums that are accredited or animal sanctuaries and focus on their conservation work.I once spent two months trying to find a vegan belt. The stores were out, and the online options were frustratingly scarce. It was two months of my son laughing at my falling-down pants. Back at the friend's party, I was sad to see that they didn't have much for us. Even the pasta salad was full of shrimp. The only vegan food there was potato chips, which we both ate. "I wish they had plant options," my 6-year-old said. The project, called <a href="https://www.sweetfarm.org/goat-2-meeting">Goat 2 Meeting</a> after the popular <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GoToMeeting">conferencing software</a>, allows people to bring farm animals into their work happy hours and corporate conference calls, Sweet Farm cofounder Anna Sweet told Business Insider.As the coronavirus pandemic leads millions to comply with lockdown orders and make remote working a daily occurrence, employers are turning to video calls on Zoom, Google Hangouts, and other software to mimic face-to-face meetings and conversations. Goat 2 Meeting is just one example of the innovative projects and offerings that have popped up in recent weeks to bring people together - albeit virtually.Since Goat 2 Meeting opened up in mid-March, more than 300 requests have already been made, Sweet told Business Insider. Sweet Farm's animals have already made appearances in meetings for Fortune 500 companies and tech startups, she said. In one virtual happy hour for a law firm, lawyers brought their kids along to the video call to meet the animals and get a virtual tour of the farm.People can pay anywhere from $65 to $250 for various interactions with the animals, which include goats, sheep, pigs, cows, turkeys, and llamas - by far the most popular choice. For $65, you get a 20-minute virtual tour of the farm for up to 6 call participants. To book for a bigger meeting, you can pay $100 for a 10-minute animal cameo, or $250 for a 25-minute virtual tour.Sweet, who also works in tech in Silicon Valley, founded Sweet Farm as a nonprofit animal rescue and sanctuary designed to "connect people to where their food comes from." The farm is usually funded in part by in-person visits, but those have been made impossible due to the coronavirus pandemic. Goat 2 Meeting is a way Sweet Farm can make up for some of its lost revenue, Sweet said.Sweet Farm is also offering free virtual field trips to schools and nonprofits. Sweet said the farm has already held field trips for schools in the United Kingdom and Brazil, and is soon providing a virtual tour for a homeless shelter in North Carolina."I think we're all a little stressed with what's going on, many of us have been sitting inside," Sweet told Business Insider. Flaming tar balls and crackers fly through the air to a soundtrack of human laughter and shouts. In the Bankura district of West Bengal, this sort of humiliation of pachyderms is routine, as it is in the other elephant-range states of Assam, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu and more."India is home to more than 70% of the global population of Asian elephants, but interactions between people and these animals are not always peaceful. According to Hazra:"The ignorance and bloodlust of mobs that attack herds for fun is compounded by the plight of those that actually suffer damage to land, life and property by wandering elephants, and the utter indifference of the central and state government to recognize the crisis that is at hand. For these smart, gentle, social animals who have roamed the sub-continent for centuries, hell is now and here."The conservation organization's photo contest is meant to highlight powerful photos that can evoke supportive human responses. "I think there's something really powerful in taking her story and relating it to what's happening right now in our society.""I think it's super relevant in this moment that we're going through, especially with these protests, and the fact that people need to have a voice," she continued. "And so we wanted to write something that felt very anthemic and would be able to lift people up, make them feel like they could be warriors, in whatever way that is — whether that's standing up for their religious beliefs, their sexuality, their rights.""We wanted to invoke that, mixed with a cheekiness: 'We don't stop until mascara's on the dance floor.' <div class="image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"><a href="http://www.nonhumanrightsproject.org/2013/11/30/bios-on-the-chimpanzees-in-new-york-lawsuits/">Nonhuman Rights Project</a>Kiko, one of the chimps the Nonhuman Rights Project is trying to free.</div></div></div>A group called the Nonhuman Rights Project (NRP) has filed an <a href="http://www.scribd.com/doc/188684493/Memorandum-of-Law-Tommy-Case">unusual legal action </a>to try to free a chimp that's allegedly kept as a pet in a tiny cement cage in an upstate New York used trailer lot.
The lawsuit demands a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Habeas_corpus">writ of habeas corpus</a> - essentially a document granting freedom - on behalf of Tommy the chimp so he can be moved to an animal sanctuary that's more like his natural habitat than his current cage. NRP is filing two other suits this week seeking freedom for three more New York chimps.
The NRP says it's basing the three suits <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Somersett%27s_Case">on a 1772 case</a> involving an American slave named James Somerset. After Somerset's owner took him from Virginia to England, a group of abolitionist lawyers filed a petition to have him freed.
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Murray,_1st_Earl_of_Mansfield">Lord Mansfield</a> decided to set him <a href="http://www.historytoday.com/stephen-usherwood/black-must-be-discharged-abolitionists-debt-lord-mansfield">free,</a> writing:
The state of slavery is of such a nature that it is incapable of being introduced on any reasons, moral or political, but only by positive <keyword id="6355470" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Law">law</keyword>, which preserves its force long after the reasons, occasions, and time itself from whence it was created, is erased from memory. It is so odious, that nothing can be suffered to support it, but positive law.
So how does this ruling apply to Tommy the chimp (and the other chimps NRP is trying to free - Kiko, Hercules, and Leo)? First of all, New York state has recognized the commonlaw notion of habeas corpus, NRP says. The state has also embraced Lord Mansfield's ruling in the Somerset case, according to NRP.
Of course, chimps aren't human beings. But the NRP makes a pretty strong argument that they're more people than things, and that they're entitled to "legal personhood." The suit points out that humans and chimps<a href="http://www.genome.gov/15515096"> share 99% of their DNA</a>.
They can use tools, grieve, and speak in sign language. Like people, the NRP's legal documents point out, chimps have brains that are relatively big for their bodies. Chimps, like humans, are self-aware.
It is this self-awareness that makes life in a cage so hard for Tommy, a cognitive zoologist named Mathias Osvath <a href="http://www.nonhumanrightsproject.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Ex-11-Osvath-Affidavit-Tommy-Case.pdf">wrote in an affidavit</a> for NRP.
"[C]himpanzees and other great apes have a concept of their personal past and future and therefore suffer the pain of not being able to fulfill one's goals or move around as one wants," he wrote. "Like humans they experience the pain of anticipating a never-ending situation."
Adam Winkler, a <a href="https://www.law.ucla.edu/faculty/all-faculty-profiles/professors/Pages/adam-winkler.aspx">professor of constitutional law at UCLA</a>, told Business Insider this could be a "groundbreaking" case even though the chimps will probably lose.
"The chimps aren't likely to win," Winkler acknowledged in an email message. "But this case is symbol of our growing understanding of the similarities between chimps and humans. One of the difficult questions is where to draw the line. Which creatures have rights? Dogs? Chickens? Cows? Deer? Killing animals is not an unusual thing in America. It's practically our way of life."

Animal Rights Group Sues To Liberate New York Chimp, Citing Slavery Ruling

While most brown bears quit the mating game at age 19, one 26-year-old male named Pyros is still going strong.
Scientists worry that Pyros' friskiness is threatening the survival of his colony by limiting genetic diversity. Environmental officials said the bear may need to be sterilized or removed from the wild to prevent further inbreeding.
Pyros is one of 30 brown bears in a colony that lives in the Pyrenees mountains on the border between Spain and France.
Pyros has fathered so many offspring that he "is the father, grandfather or great-grandfather of nearly all of the cubs born in the Pyrenees over the past two decades," <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2014/jun/08/pyrenees-brown-bear-pyros-sexual-castration-segregation">Ashifa Kassam wrote in the Guardian</a>.
Pyros' sexual dominance is preventing other males from mating with females within the local population. Recently, a cub was born that was both his daughter and his grand-daughter, Kassam wrote. Pyros is so dominant that only one of the four other male bears in the colony is not related to him. None of the male bears have fathered any young, according to The Guardian.
Pyros' fate remains uncertain. Environmental managers are considering putting him in a sanctuary or sterilizing him. Both plans have their drawbacks. Captivity would be expensive and also stressful for Pyros after living in the wild for so many years. Castration may not prevent Pyros from maintaining his sexual dominance and driving other male bears away, even though he won't be able have children, Ignasi Rodríguez, deputy director for the Catalan government's office of biodiversity, <a href="http://www.lavanguardia.com/natural/fauna-flora/20140606/54409675729/cortar-actividad-sexual-oso-pyros-pirineo.html" target="_blank">told La Vanguardia</a>.
The third option doesn't require any intervention. Old age could slow Pyros down and he may soon start losing his teeth, making it more difficult to eat, the Guardian explain. Soon, Pyros may not appear as healthy and strong to the ladies.
<h3>The Genghis Khan of brown bears</h3>
The situation in the Pyrenees echoes that of brown bears worldwide. Just a few months ago, <a href="http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2014-03/mbae-sy032014.php">scientists announced </a>that they had found the bear equivalent of a Genghis Khan. One brown bear lineage seemed to dominate across Eurasia and North America, and "two brown bears from populations as far away from each other as Norway and the Alaskan ABC islands carried highly similar Y chromosomes," <a href="https://mail-attachment.googleusercontent.com/attachment/?ui=2&amp;ik=9c6ccbe9e9&amp;view=att&amp;th=146824ab383cffcc&amp;attid=0.1&amp;disp=inline&amp;realattid=f_hw8853kj0&amp;safe=1&amp;zw&amp;saduie=AG9B_P_Kwq8HJhifQy-sF7Pd4M5q&amp;sadet=1402345707793&amp;sads=L5ylFvQ4sX1ATlORQ-KiNn6bs5I">the authors wrote</a>.
"Brown bear males, tend to, whenever possible, develop strong dominance across their, sometimes very large, territories. This allows few males to be the father(s) of virtually all offspring in large areas," study author Frank Hailer, an evolutionary and conservation biologist, said in an email to Business Insider.
The difference in the Pyrenees, said Hailer, is that there is one male and very few females, many of whom are related. "Such populations tend to accumulate genetic diseases and suffer from inbreeding depression," he said.
<h3>Bringing bears back from extinction</h3>
Brown bears disappeared from the Pyrenees mountains in the 1990s. The last one was allegedly killed in 1991, <a href="http://www.smithsonianmag.com/travel/can-brown-bears-survive-in-the-pyrenees-118565664/?no-ist">Alastair Bland wrote for Smithsonian.com</a>. In 1995, several brown bears were brought from Slovenia to repopulate the mountains. Pyros was the third bear to be introduced after two females.
Last year, researchers thought this <a href="http://phys.org/news/2013-05-superdaddy-pyros-pyrenees.html">"super-daddy"</a> would tire out and and let the three younger males take over. It would be good timing since six females in the colony were ready to reproduce. But Pyros maintained his dominance.
Though brown bears worldwide are designated as of <a href="http://www.worldwildlife.org/species/brown-bear"> "Least Concern," on the endangered list</a>, they still face threats from habitat loss and hunting. Currently they only occupy 2% of their original range, <a href="http://www.worldwildlife.org/species/brown-bear">according to the World Wildlife Fund</a>.
Another male is set to join the Pyrenees crew in the spring, <a href="http://www.lavanguardia.com/natural/fauna-flora/20140606/54409675729/cortar-actividad-sexual-oso-pyros-pirineo.html">according to La Vanguardia</a>.
Looking <a href="http://www.d.umn.edu/~jetterso/Ecological%20Genetics/documents/Rescueofseverelybottleneckedwolfbysingleimmigrant2003.pdf">at analogous situations</a> offers a glimpse of hope for Pyros' tribe. "Scandinavian wolves almost went extinct in the late 1980s and early 1990s, because the population was so inbred," said Hailer. By bringing in new unrelated wolves, the population's genetic health is recovering, he said.
<h3>Problems ahead</h3>
Despite efforts to rebuild the Pyrenees brown bear population, conservationists could <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/5317690/French-Pyrenees-bad-news-bears.html">face opposition from local shepherds</a>. One-hundred thousands sheep live the Pyrenees, an estimated 200 to 300 of which are killed every year by bears, according to Bland.
"Keeping shepherds happy as bears multiply in the mountains is proving to be the most difficult part of the reintroduction," he wrote.
In France, the government compensates shepherds for sheep killed by bears, offering over 100 Euros per ($135) sheep. Cows can fetch even more. Still, proving the cause of death of livestock can be difficult to do, wrote Bland.
