Most parents are concerned about potential long-term risks from the Covid-19 vaccine for their children and some fear they'll be held responsible if their child gets ill after the jab, a study has revealed. Despite efforts to increase the vaccination rate among children, many remain unvaccinated due to parental concerns about the vaccine's long-term effects and anticipated responsibility, aids the study published in the journal Pediatrics. The Dornsife Center for Economic and Social Research (CSER) at University of Southern California (USC) found that 45 per cent of parents of children are concerned about potential long-term risks while 18 per cent fear they'll be viewed as responsible if their child gets sick after the vaccination. Ying Liu, research scientist at CESR and the study lead, explained that "parents' hesitancy may be partly driven by apprehension about the vaccine, stemming from its rapid development and the use of newer techniques." "People often exhibit a more cautious approach when making medical decisions for others, including their own children, than for themselves," Liu said. "Some tend to do nothing rather than vaccinate their child, even though such inaction could result in negative consequences." The researchers sought to determine the causes of low child vaccination rates in the US. Currently, only 39 per cent of children of age 5 to 11, and 68 per cent of those aged 12 to 17 have received vaccinations, compared to 92 per cent of adults. "This research underscores the pressing need to address parental perceptions of the Covid-19 vaccine. By doing so, we believe the vaccination rate among 5- to 17-year-olds could be increased to over 50 per cent," said Arie Kapteyn, director of CESR.

Covid jab for kids: Parents worry about long-term risks

Scientists have uncovered more knowledge about the risk of developing a very rare blood clotting condition following vaccination against COVID-19, according to a study. Based on health data from five European countries and the US, the study shows an increased risk of the condition, called thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (<keyword id="4680766" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tts" source="Orion">TTS</keyword>), after first-dose of the Oxford-Astrazeneca vaccine (same as Covishield in formulation). The study, published in The British Medical Journal (<keyword id="259649" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="bmj" source="Orion">BMJ</keyword>), also shows a trend towards an increased risk after the Janssen/Johnson &amp; Johnson vaccine, compared with the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. The researchers stressed that the syndrome is very rare, but said the observed risks "should be considered when planning further immunisation campaigns and future vaccine development." TTS occurs when a person has blood clots (thrombosis) as well as low blood platelet counts (thrombocytopenia). According to the study, it is very rare and different from general clotting conditions like deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or lung clots (pulmonary embolism). TTS is currently being investigated as a rare side effect of adenovirus-based Covid vaccines, which use a weakened virus to trigger an immune response against coronavirus, but no clear evidence exists on the comparative safety of different types of vaccines, according to the study. To address this knowledge gap, an international team of researchers set out to compare the risk of TTS or thromboembolic events associated with the use of adenovirus-based Covid vaccines with mRNA-based Covid vaccines. Their findings were based on routinely collected health data for more than 10 million adults in France, <keyword id="87" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="germany" source="Orion">Germany</keyword>, the Netherlands, Spain, the UK, and the US who received at least one dose of a Covid vaccine (Oxford-AstraZeneca, Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna or Janssen/Johnson &amp; Johnson) from December 2020 to mid-2021. Further, to minimise possible error, participants were matched by the researchers by age and sex and a range of other potentially influential factors such as pre-existing conditions and medication use were taken into account. The researchers then compared rates of thrombosis and of thrombosis with thrombocytopenia between the adenovirus vaccines (Oxford-AstraZeneca or Janssen/Johnson &amp; Johnson) and the mRNA vaccines (Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna) within 28 days after vaccination. Overall, 1.3 million first-dose Oxford-AstraZeneca recipients were matched to 2.1 million Pfizer-BioNTech recipients from Germany and the UK. An additional 7,62,517 people receiving Janssen/Johnson &amp; Johnson were matched to 2.8 million receiving Pfizer-BioNTech in Germany, Spain, and the US, and all 6,28,164 Janssen/Johnson &amp; Johnson recipients from the US were matched to 2.2 million Moderna recipients. A total of 862 thrombocytopenia events were found in the matched first dose Oxford-AstraZeneca recipients from Germany and the UK, and 520 events after the first dose of Pfizer-BioNTech. When the data were pooled together, the analysis showed a 30 per cent increased risk of thrombocytopenia after the first dose of Oxford-AstraZeneca compared with Pfizer-BioNTech - an absolute risk difference of 8.21 per 100,000 recipients, the study found. No differential risk of thrombocytopenia was seen after a second dose of Oxford-AstraZeneca compared with the second dose of Pfizer-BioNTech. Similarly, no increased risk of thrombocytopenia was noted after Janssen/Johnson &amp; Johnson compared with the first dose of Pfizer-BioNTech. This is an observational study, and the researchers acknowledge that the rarity of the condition and incomplete vaccine records may have affected the results. Additionally, the scientists cannot rule out the possibility that some of the observed risks may have been due to other unmeasured and confounding factors. However, the study claims to be well-designed and that it allowed comparison of available vaccines with each other, rather than with no vaccination, and that the results were consistent after additional analyses, suggesting that they withstand scrutiny. "To our knowledge, this is the first multinational analysis of the comparative safety of adenovirus-based compared with mRNA-based Covid-19 vaccines," said the authors. "Although these events are very rare, absolute numbers of affected patients could become substantial owing to the large numbers of vaccine doses administered worldwide," they warned. After Moderna chief, Pfizer CEO says COVID-19 likely to end in a year

Jaeyong Ahn, the CEO of South Korea's SK Bioscience, was speaking to the <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/5c4ea795-6307-4147-b6d3-28022e3dce8a" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Financial Times</a> about the pharmaceutical giant's <a href="https://www.skbioscience.com/en/news/news_01_01?mode=view&amp;id=154&amp;" target="_blank" rel="noopener">plans</a> for global expansion, when he said it would be "unrealistic" for the company to supply vaccines developed by the company to China in the near future. SK Bioscience has developed its own <a href="https://www.skbioscience.com/en/news/news_01_01?mode=view&amp;id=145" target="_blank" rel="noopener">COVID-19 vaccine,</a> which is now being used in South Korea. China is still racing to develop its own mRNA jabs. But they won't use foreign vaccines to fight COVID because of 'national pride,' says South Korea's top vaccine maker.

US pharmaceutical <keyword id="44612" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pfizer">Pfizer</keyword>'s vaccine against Covid-19 can effectively neutralise Beta, Gamma variant of the <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">Coronavirus</keyword> disease, according to a study. The study led by researchers from the New York University, US, showed that the Pfizer BNT162b2 vaccination worked well against the majority of <keyword id="112799" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="variants">variants</keyword> as the earlier virus, but the vaccine neutralised the South African variant and the Brazil variant with a 3-fold decrease in titer. "Our interpretation of the results is that the vaccine antibodies are very powerful, and even if you lose 3-fold of the titer, there is still plenty of antibody there to neutralize the virus. We believe the findings demonstrate that the vaccines will remain protective against the variants that we tested," said Nathaniel "Ned" Landau, Professor in the <keyword id="1383702" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Department-of-Microbiology">Department of Microbiology</keyword> at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine, in New York City. The study, published in the journal mBio, also found that monoclonal antibody cocktail consisting of casirivamab and imdevimab might be less effective against SARS-CoV-2 variants in laboratory experiments. Lab experiments on <keyword id="1947766" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Regeneron">Regeneron</keyword> pharmaceuticals' REGN-COV2 -- a 2 recombinant monoclonal antibody cocktail -- showed that casirivamab had lost some of its neutralising activity against the South African and Brazilian variants and the cocktail was 9- to 15-fold decreased in titer, the team said. "One of the Regeneron antibodies is affected by the E484K mutation, and as a result the cocktail loses some of its neutralizing activity," said Landau. "The question with this work is 'how do the laboratory findings translate into clinical effects, that is what will happen when you treat a patient infected with one of the variants?' We cannot say for sure. We will only know when the clinical data comes in," Landau noted. The team created a panel of pseudotyped viruses using the spike proteins from six different variants of SARS-CoV-2: the B117 lineage variant identified in the UK, the B1351 lineage variant identified in South Africa, the B11248 lineage variant identified in Brazil, the COH.20G/677H lineage variant identified in Columbus Ohio, the 20 EUs variant identified in Spain and later found elsewhere in Europe, and the Mink cluster five spike proteins located in minks in Denmark. Similar experiments in Moderna's Covid vaccine also produced the same results, Landau said. Large retailers, which have hundreds of thousands of workers across the US, are likely waiting for more direction from OSHA before making any moves on the new mandate, said Kate Bally, the Director of Labor and Employment Service at <a href="https://legal.thomsonreuters.com/en/products/practical-law" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Thomson Reuters Practical Law.</a> She said that there a currently a number of unknowns in terms of how the mandates will play out. "It's not clear exactly how it will all work," she said.That means that large employers will likely take time to plan out their next moves."If you are a big retailer, making these changes is probably like moving a giant ship," Bally said. "You can't just turn on a dime."Bally noted that a similar <a href="https://www.osha.gov/coronavirus/ets">emergency temporary order</a> was issued for healthcare workers in June. In that ETS, employers were tasked with paying for vaccinations, as well as compensating workers for their time spent getting vaccinated and recovering from possible side effects. But according to Bally, there are a few potential areas where things could get complicated for employers under the new order. Vaccination mandates are subject to carve-outs for workers who refuse the shot on grounds of their disability or "sincerely-held religious beliefs." In regards to religious beliefs, it's not as simple as claiming that you strongly disagree with vaccinations."The employer gets to push back and say, 'I need to hear from your pastor, I need to hear them say that your religion doesn't authorize vaccinations,'" she said. "It's not enough to say, 'I'm afraid of the vaccine.'"Some large employers have likely held off on mandating the shot for their frontline workers over litigation concerns, she said."So many employers are asking, 'How do I not get sued?'" Bally said. "They want to protect the health and safety of employees and customers, but they're worried about large class action lawsuits."But the upcoming order from OSHA may render those concerns largely moot for many employers.
