New Delhi, June 9 () Golden Tobacco Ltd (GTL) on Tuesday said it has decided to defer all capital expenditure except those in advance stages due to the coronavirus pandemic and it has around "nil unutilised fund based limits" as on April 30, 2020. In a regulatory filing disclosing the impact of COVID-19, the company said in April and May 2020 there was no production and currently its plants are operating based on demand, outlook and labour availability. On the planned capital expenditure, GTL said it has "decided to defer all capital expenditure except those in advance stages" which were to be completed by the end of 2019-20. Manufacturing operations have gradually restarted with due guidelines from the respective government authorities. Cigarette/cigar manufacturing plant located at Vadodara resumed operations from June 1, it added. Sufficient inventory of raw material at plants are ensured for smooth manufacturing operations, the company said. With regards to liquidity position, GTL said it has "around nil unutilised fund based limits" as on April 30, 2020. New Delhi, Jun 16 () Worried about the stability of financial sector following outbreak of coronavirus, many Indian companies are shifting their accounts to larger and more stable banks, said a report. The outbreak of COVID-19 has created unprecedented crisis around the globe impacting hard the economy as well as the financial sector. For an Indian banking system already in turmoil before the outbreak of the global pandemic, the COVID-19 crisis represents an especially stern test. In response to the perceived threat, India's companies are "fleeing to the safety" of the country's largest banks, aid the report of New Greenwich Associates released by rating agency Crisil. "Even before COVID-19, Indian companies were worried about the stability of some banks and their own access to funding and liquidity," says Gaurav Arora, Head of Asia at Greenwich Associates. "Now faced with an unprecedented economic shutdown, many large and middle market companies are joining consumers in moving business to India's biggest and presumably safest banks," Arora said. Greenwich Associates, part of Crisil Limited (an S&amp;P Global Company), is a global provider of data, analytics and insights to the financial services industry. The report further said that at the top of the list of India's biggest and presumably most stable bank is State Bank of India (SBI), which was benefiting from companies' worries about the stability of other public- and private-sector banks before the COVID-19 crisis. SBI's lower cost of funding gives it a distinctive advantage, and Greenwich Associates data show that the bank has been steadily improving in service and relationship quality. "That improvement makes it an increasingly viable alternative for companies dissatisfied with the service or credit policies of their current banks during the crisis," says Winston Jin, Greenwich Associates consultant and report co-author. As per the report, even before the COVID-19 crisis, India's biggest private sector banks were winning business from their smaller private-sector counterparts, due to fallout from the Yes Bank restructuring. Importantly, the spike in demand for digital banking solutions caused by the COVID-19 lockdown plays to the strength of these banks and could actually create opportunities to capture new relationships, as long as their balance sheets remain relatively strong and they are able to continue lending to hard-pressed companies, it said. New Delhi, Apr 7 () Seeking intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, exporters on Tuesday demanded a comprehensive package as the exports sector will take an "unprecedented" hit due to lockdowns to contain the COVID-19 pandemic. In a letter to the Prime Minister, Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) President S K Saraf said that the exports sector is facing over 50 per cent cancellation due to the global lockdown on account spread of the coronavirus in the world. "Our exports will take an unprecedented hit in such challenging times. The worst-hit are lifestyle products like leather, carpets, handicrafts, apparels etc which are having over 75 per cent cancellations. This will also put pressure on current account deficit as overseas remittance will decline so will be FDI/FIIs inflow in the country," he said. Painting a grim picture, he added that there is a high risk of large scale unemployment after lockdown, especially in the labour-intensive sectors, if they are not accorded fiscal relief to ease their cash flow. "Therefore, we request immediate help through rapid policy decisions to mitigate the crisis and prevent further structural damage to both industry and economy," Saraf said. As part of the fiscal package, the organisation has demanded a host of measures including Rs 30,000 crore to exporting companies for easing their working capital liquidity issues, 2 per cent additional incentives under export promotion scheme - MEIS, subsidy on loans till March next year, and 50 per cent cut in GST rates for sectors such as hotels, aviation, and travel for next 12 months. Besides, one-time amnesty for default in export obligations under advance authorisation, EPCG (export promotion for capital goods), and export-oriented units (EOUs) by waiving interest and penalty and charging only basic customs duty. It should also be extended to any other dispute in customs matter. "All existing pre and post-shipment finance in Foreign Currency or Indian Rupee should be extended on maturity by additional 90 -180 days on autoroute irrespective of the nature of contract and sanctioned limit. Moreover, no deposit of money be insisted by banks where limit granted in foreign currency is crossed due to rupee depreciation," the president said. He also urged for providing 50 per cent freight subsidy on air freight to encourage exporters to use air freight to compensate for time loss. "All exports related refund and statutory refunds like duty drawback, GST should be paid to exporters, including risky exporters, within 15 days so as to ease liquidity at their end. A bond may be taken from risky exporters so as to recover it, if so warranted," he said. He also said that the directorate general of foreign trade (DGFT) must give one time amnesty to all who could not apply or get MEIS (merchandise export from India scheme) due to system failure or minor lapse in shipping bills. "Indian exporters should be given additional 2 per cent MEIS and labour intensive sector to be provided additional 4 per cent MEIS on exports up to 31st March 2021. The MEIS should be given without realization as it will be delayed in such tight liquidity globally. This scrip should be used for payment of any statutory levy including GST, Income Tax etc," he said. Saraf said that EPF )employee provident fund) and Employees' State Insurance (ESI) should be waived for three months as labour-intensive sectors are in "extreme pressure" to pay wages, but do not have liquidity or cash flow to pay these funds. The waiver of these funds for three months will cost the government Rs 18,900 crore, he said adding this can be given to companies with a minimum 50 per cent export turnover. "The loan amount should cover six months gross salary and wages, rent and electricity charges. No additional collateral or paperwork to all industrial units who have a clean record with the bank before lockdown. New Delhi, Jun 14 () Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant on Sunday stressed on the need for adequate testing, accompanied by aggressive containment by the states to manage COVID-19 crisis. "Some States/Cities think that they can manage COVID-19 crisis without adequate testing. This is not possible. Examples of Kerala/Karnataka/Korea demonstrates that testing -tracing- treatment accompanied by aggressive containment &amp; public adherence to masks &amp; distancing is key," Kant said in a tweet. With 9,195 fatalities till Sunday, India is the ninth worst-hit nation in terms of COVID-19 deaths, while the highest spike of 11,929 cases took the tally to over 3.20 lakh, of which over half have recovered from the disease. According to the Union health ministry data, the country recorded 311 new deaths in the 24-hour period till Sunday morning while the recovery rate rose to above 50 per cent with 1,62,378 patients cured so far, leaving 1,49,348 cases active. The Johns Hopkins University, which has been compiling COVID-19 data from all over the world, put India in the ninth position in terms of death toll and fourth in terms of total caseload. BKS BAL

Kolkata, Jun 11 () Insisting that the COVID-19 crisis should be turned into an opportunity to create an 'Atmanirbhar Bharat', Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said steps have to be taken to ensure that products imported from abroad are manufactured in the country. Addressing the 95th annual plenary session of the Indian Chamber of Commerce in Kolkata over video conference, he said this is the time to make bold decisions and investments for the country to scale new heights. "India's goal of self-reliance has been paramount in the policy and practice of the country. The COVID-19 crisis gave us lessons on how to speed up efforts in that direction," he said. The Prime Minister also said that people-centric, people-driven and planet-friendly development has become part of the BJP-led Central government's governance.
