According to the guidelines by the Union Health Ministry, Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin is the only available option for this group (between 15-18 years). All the states/union territories will get additional doses of Covaxin to administer this population. According to the Health Ministry, all the necessary protocols regarding the vaccination of children aged between 15-18 years will be strictly followed. Beneficiaries will have to wait for half an hour after the administration of the COVID-19 dose to be monitored for Adverse Events Following Immunisation (AEFI) and then only be eligible for the second dose after 28 days. Around 145 million of the population in India have been vaccinated against COVID-19, according to the Union Health Ministry data. And around 61 million people have got their second dose of COVID-19, while more than 84 million have received their first dose. According to the data given on the CoWin platform, over 3.5 lakh children in India aged between 15-18 years have registered so far for their first dose of COVID-19 shot, as of January 2, 2022. The eligible population can register themselves on the CoWin app. The registrations had started on January 1, 2022. They also have a walk-in registration option starting from today, i.e., January 3. How to book a COVID-19 vaccination slot for children aged between 15-18 years The Health Ministry has confirmed that the vaccination slot for children can be booked from a new or from an existing account. <ol><li>Open the <a href="https://www.cowin.gov.in/">CoWin</a> website on any smart device. </li><li>After opening, scroll down a little, you will see an option to book slots for children under the name ‘Vaccination for Children’, click on that. </li><li>Then, enter your new or existing mobile number for one-time password (OTP). </li><li>If you are a new member, then click on ‘Register Member’. COVID-19 vaccine for kids aged between 15-18 starts today – Here’s how you can book your slot

Nearly 4.5 million (44,49,552) beneficiaries have received COVID-19 vaccine shots in merely 19 days, the Union Health Ministry said on Thursday. India became the fastest country in the world to reach the 4 million COVID-19 vaccination mark, achieving this feat in 18 days. "Many other countries have had a head start of almost 65 days. India launched the countrywide COVID-19 vaccination drive on January 16. The number of beneficiaries being vaccinated every day has also shown a progressive increase," the ministry said. In a span of 24 hours, 3,10,604 people were vaccinated across 8,041 sessions, it said, adding that 84,617 sessions have been conducted so far. India's COVID-19 active caseload has dropped to 1.55 lakh (1,55,025) and comprises just 1.44 per cent of the total infections. The day-on-day change in the number of active cases over the last few weeks depicts the consistent decline in active cases. India's Daily Positivity Rate is 1.82 per cent, as of today, it said. "India has maintained the daily positivity rate below 2 per cent in last few weeks (19 days)," the ministry said. The total recoveries have surged to 1,04,80,455. "The difference in new recoveries outnumbering new cases has also improved the recovery rate to 97.13 per cent. The total recovered cases are 67.6 times the active cases," the ministry highlighted. It said 86.04 per cent of the new recovered cases are observed to be concentrated in six states and union territories. At 7,030, Maharashtra has reported the maximum number of single day recoveries while 6,380 people recovered in Kerala in a span of 24 hours followed by 533 in Tamil Nadu. The ministry said that 84.67 per cent of the new cases too are from six states and UTs. Kerala continues to report the highest daily new cases at 6,356. It is followed by Maharashtra with 2,992, while Tamil Nadu reported 514 new cases. Six states and UTs also account for 71.03 per cent of the new deaths. Maharashtra saw the maximum casualties at 30 followed by Kerala (20). West Bengal and Chhattisgarh reported 7 casualties each. India has administered about 4.5 million COVID-19 vaccine shots in 19 days

The domestically developed <keyword id="9485939" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="covaxin">Covaxin</keyword> is effective against the <keyword id="11441054" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="delta-plus-variant">Delta plus variant</keyword> of Covid-19, claims Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in its study released on Monday. Covaxin is developed by Bharat Biotech in collaboration with ICMR and National Institute of Pune. The study states: "The sera of individuals who were fully immunized (with 2 doses) didn't show significant fold-reduction in the NAb titer against Delta, Delta AY.1 and B.1.617.3." Delta Plus is a mutated form of the Delta variant and was first discovered in India. It is characterised by increased transmissibility and spike protein mutations. The study points that Delta variant with its characteristic spike protein mutations has mutated further into four sub-lineages with additional mutations which are associated with higher transmission and probable immune escape. Last week, Union Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh informed parliament last week that 70 cases of the Delta Plus variant were found by INSACOG, a group of 28 laboratories involved in genome sequencing. Covaxin along with other two vaccines -- Covishield and Russia's Sputnik -- has formed the trio for India's massive vaccination drive against the virus. The research further states, "A significant increase in the NAb titer against the B.1 variant in recovered cases with vaccination and breakthrough cases was observed compared to the Covid-19 native vaccines. Similarly, a significant increase in NAb titer was also observed among these two groups against Delta, Delta AY.1 and B.1.617.3 variants." "This demonstrates the possible role of memory cells in immune boosting with post-infection or infection after immunization. The comparative analysis of all the groups revealed that the B.1.617.3 variant seems to be less susceptible to neutralization followed by Delta AY.1 and Delta variants." The study on efficacy analysis further establishes Covaxin to be 93.4 percent effective against severe symptomatic Covid-19 cases and 63.6 percent protection against asymptomatic Covid-19. India’s Covaxin effective against Delta Plus variant of COVID-19, reveals ICMR study

Taking the first dose of <keyword id="44612" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pfizer">Pfizer</keyword> <keyword id="8764262" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid">Covid</keyword> vaccine and then AstraZeneca for the second can provide good protection against the pandemic virus, a study has found. The Com-Cov trial, led by researchers from the <keyword id="150557" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="University-of-Oxford">University of Oxford</keyword>, looked at the efficacy of either two doses of Pfizer, two of AstraZeneca, or one of them followed by the other. The results showed that all combinations worked well, priming the immune system, the <keyword id="60684" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BBC">BBC</keyword> reported. The study included 850 volunteers aged 50 and above, who were given the doses four weeks apart. The team found that people who took AstraZeneca shot followed by Pfizer showed higher antibodies and T cell responses than those who took Pfizer followed by AstraZeneca. Both of these mixes induced higher antibodies than two doses of AstraZeneca, while the highest antibody response was seen after two doses of Pfizer, and the highest T cell response from AstraZeneca followed by Pfizer. "We already know that both standard schedules are very effective against severe disease and hospitalisations, including against the Delta variant when given at eight to 12 weeks apart," lead investigator Professor Matthew Snape, from varsity was quoted as saying. He however, added that the findings did not undermine the UK policy of giving people the same jab twice. But, they do offer such flexibility for vaccine rollout in the future. "Mixing doses could provide us with even greater flexibility for a booster programme, while also supporting countries who have further to go with their vaccine rollouts, and who may be experiencing supply difficulties," UK's deputy chief medical officer, Prof Jonathan Van-Tam, was quoted as saying by the BBC. Two doses are important to give the fullest protection and teach the body to make antibodies and T cells to block and kill Covid. Meanwhile, a pre-print study suggests that a third dose of AstraZeneca vaccine, given more than six months after the second, boosts the immune system, the BBC reported. A combination of Pfizer and AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines can produce more antibodies, say researchers

In a separate communication, Moderna has informed that the US has agreed to donate a certain number of doses of its COVID-19 vaccine through COVAX to the Government of India for use here and has sought approval from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), while <keyword id="6357157" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="cipla">Cipla</keyword>, on behalf of the US pharma major, has requested for import and marketing authorization of these jabs. According to the sources, an approval is likely anytime as the CDSCO is in favour of granting permission to Cipla for import of Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine for restricted emergency use in India considering the pandemic situation in the country and in public interest. Cipla filed an application on Monday seeking permission for import of Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine referring to DCGI notices dated April 15 and June 1 as per which if the vaccine is approved by the <keyword id="44669" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="USFDA">USFDA</keyword> for EUA, the vaccine can be granted marketing authorisation without bridging trial and assessment of safety data of first 100 beneficiaries of vaccines shall be submitted before rolling out in immunization programme. Also, the requirement of testing of every batch by the Central Drugs Laboratory (CDL), Kasauli can be exempted if the batch/lot is released by the CDL of country of origin. However, summary lot protocol review and scrutiny of documents shall be undertaken by the laboratory for batch release as per standard procedures, Cipla said referring to the DCGI's new revised rules. "This correspondence is to request the CDSCO to open a file for approval of these urgently needed vaccines," Moderna said. In a bid to expedite the roll out of vaccines, the DCGI on June 1 decided to waive off testing of batches at CDL for foreign-manufactured vaccines that have been approved by international drug regulators such as the US FDA, the UK's MHRA or the WHO. The Centre had in April issued detailed guidelines and proactively eased entry of foreign made COVID-19 vaccines approved by the US FDA, EMA, UK's MHRA and Japan's PMDA, and WHO's Emergency Use Listing into India. According to the guidelines, these vaccines will not need to undergo prior bridging trials. The provision was further amended to waive off the trial requirement altogether for the well-established vaccines manufactured in other countries.

The <keyword id="83655" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Union-health-ministry">Union Health Ministry</keyword> has prepared a fact-sheet to guide frontline workers and vaccinators on counselling <keyword id="28944" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pregnant-women">pregnant women</keyword> about the value and precautions of the COVID-19 vaccine so that they can make an informed decision.Although more than 90 per cent infected pregnant women recover without any need for hospitalisation, rapid deterioration in health may occur in a few and that might affect the foetus also, the document said. "It is, therefore, advised that a pregnant woman should take COVID-19 vaccine," it said. However, pregnancy does not increase the <keyword id="27263" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="risk">risk</keyword> of COVID-19 infection, the document stressed. Symptomatic pregnant women appear to be at an increased risk of severe disease and death. In case of severe disease, like all other patients, pregnant women shall also need hospitalisation. Pregnant women with underlying medical conditions like high blood pressure, obesity, age over 35 years are at a higher risk of severe illness due to COVID-19, the fact sheet said. According to the document, a frontline worker or a vaccinator needs to counsel pregnant women about the availability, value and precautions of the COVID-19 vaccine. "This note provides you with the information that you need to educate and support pregnant women so that they can make an informed decision about getting the COVID-19 vaccine," the note said . The note is structured in the form of questions-answers to make it easier for frontline workers to inform pregnant women and their families about the most important issues related to COVID-19 vaccination in pregnant women. The note stated that over 95 per cent newborns of COVID-19 positive mothers have been in good condition at birth. In some cases, COVID-19 infections in pregnancy may increase the possibility of premature delivery, the baby's weight might be less than 2.5 kg and in rare situations, the baby might die before birth, it said. It said pregnant women, older than 35 years of age, obese, having a pre-existing illness such as diabetes or high blood pressure and having a history of clotting in the limbs are at a higher risk of developing complications after COVID-19 infection. In case a woman has been infected with COVID-19 during the current pregnancy, then she should be vaccinated soon after the delivery, the document stated. On the side effects of the COVID-19 vaccines, the fact-sheet stated that the COVID-19 vaccines available are safe and vaccination protects pregnant women against COVID-19 illness/disease like other individuals. Like any medicine, a vaccine may have side effects which are normally mild. After getting the vaccine injection, a pregnant woman can get mild fever, pain at the injection site or feel unwell for 1-3 days. The long-term adverse effects and safety of the vaccine for foetus and child is not established yet. "Very rarely (one in 1-5 lakh persons), the pregnant women may experience some symptoms within 20 days after getting the COVID-19 vaccination which may require immediate attention," it said. Symptoms occurring within 20 days after receiving any COVID-19 vaccine may include shortness of breath (difficulty in breathing), persistent abdominal pain with or without vomiting , pain in limbs/pain on pressing limbs or swelling in the limb, small pinpoint haemorrhages or bruising of skin beyond the injection site, weakness/paralysis of limbs or any particular side of the body, severe and persistent headaches with or without vomiting (in absence of history of migraine or chronic headache) Seizures with or without vomiting (in the absence of previous history of seizures) among others are possible. In order to protect themselves and those around from spreading the COVID-19 infection, pregnant woman and her family members should practice COVID-19 appropriate behaviour like wearing a double mask, practising frequent hand hygiene and maintaining physical distance and avoid crowded places. India's health ministry releases fact sheet to guide vaccinators on counselling pregnant women about COVID-19 vaccination

The <keyword id="682334" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Drugs-Controller-General-of-India" source="Orion">Drugs Controller General of India</keyword> (DCGI) has granted permission for the conducting of the Phase III bridging trials of Sputnik Light on the Indian population. The Sputnik Light is a single-dose <keyword id="8904563" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="COVID-19-vaccine" source="Orion">Covid-19 vaccine</keyword> of the <keyword id="9340724" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Russian-vaccine" source="Orion">Russian vaccine</keyword> Sputnik. The nod comes after a recent study published in the medical journal The Lancet said that Sputnik Light showed 78.6 to 83.7 per cent efficacy against Covid-19, significantly higher than most two-shot vaccines. The Subject Expert Committee of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) in July had refused to grant emergency-use authorisation to Sputnik-Light, ruling out the need for the conduct of the <keyword id="9915130" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="phase-III-trial" source="Orion">phase III trial</keyword> of the Russian vaccine in the country. The committee had noted that Sputnik Light was the same as component-1 of <keyword id="9739267" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sputnik-V" source="Orion">Sputnik V</keyword> and its safety and immunogenicity data in the Indian population was already generated in a trial. The study was conducted on at least 40,000 elderly people in Argentina. Sputnik Light also reduced hospitalizations among the target population at 82.1-87.6 per cent, the study said. The Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) last year partnered with Dr Reddy's Laboratories to conduct the phase III trials of Sputnik V vaccine in India. In April, Sputnik V received an emergency use authorisation in India. Reddy's administered the first dose of the vaccine in Hyderabad under a limited pilot on May 14. DCGI permits to conduct the third phase trials of Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine in India

US-based biotechnology company <keyword id="323030" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Novavax">Novavax</keyword>'s protein-based vaccine has shown overall 90 per cent efficacy against Covid-19, results of Phase-3 trials have shown. The vaccine NVX-CoV2373 is already being locally manufactured by the company's <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> partner Pune-based <keyword id="95879" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Serum-Institute-of-India">Serum Institute of India</keyword> (SII) under the brand name Covovax. In the US-based Phase-3 trials, NVX-CoV2373 also demonstrated 100 per cent protection against moderate and severe disease. "Today, Novavax is one step closer to addressing the critical and persistent global public health need for additional Covid-19 vaccines. These clinical results reinforce that NVX-CoV2373 is extremely effective and offers complete protection against both moderate and severe Covid-19 infection," said Stanley C Erck, President and Chief Executive Officer, Novavax, in a statement. "Novavax continues to work with a sense of urgency to complete our regulatory submissions and deliver this vaccine, built on a well understood and proven platform, to a world that is still in great need of vaccines," Erck added. In August 2020, Novavax and SII announced an agreement under which the US biotechnology company had given SII the licence to manufacture and supply the vaccine in low- and middle-income countries. In March 2021, CEO <keyword id="383467" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Adar-Poonawalla">Adar Poonawalla</keyword> said Covovax will be launched by September this year. "Covovax trials finally begin in India; the vaccine is made through a partnership with Novavax and Serum Institute of India," said Adar Poonawalla. The US-based Phase-3 trials began in December 2020 and enrolled 29,960 participants across 119 sites in the US and Mexico to evaluate efficacy, safety and immunogenicity, with an emphasis on recruiting a representative population of communities and demographic groups most impacted by the disease. The study "confirms that NVX-CoV2373 offers a reassuring tolerability and safety profile", said Gregory M Glenn, MD, President of Research and Development, Novavax. The company will file for regulatory authorisations in the third quarter. After receiving the approvals, Novavax will reach a manufacturing capacity of 100 million doses per month by the end of the third quarter and 150 million doses per month by the end of the fourth quarter of 2021, the statement said. NVX-CoV2373 was created using Novavax' recombinant nanoparticle technology to generate antigen derived from the coronavirus spike (S) protein and is formulated with Matrix-M adjuvant to enhance the immune response and stimulate high levels of neutralising antibodies. It contains purified protein antigen and can neither replicate, nor can it cause Covid-19. The vaccine can be stored at 2 to 8 degrees Celsius, allowing the use of existing vaccine supply chain channels for its distribution. It is packaged in a ready-to-use liquid formulation in 10-dose vials. The two-shot vaccine is also being evaluated in Phase 3 trials in the UK that demonstrated efficacy of 96.4 per cent against the original virus strain, 86.3 per cent against the B117 (Alpha) variant and 89.7 per cent overall. It is also being tested in two ongoing Phase 2 studies that began in August 2020: A Phase 2b trial in South Africa that demonstrated 55 per cent efficacy overall in HIV-negative participants and 48.6 per cent efficacy against the B1351 (Beta) variant, and a Phase 1/2 study in the US and Australia. The company is also conducting trials in adolescents between ages 12 and 18. According to the Indian government, the interval between the first and second dose should be four to eight weeks. “Most likely, after eight weeks, you should consider your first dose to be a waste of time,” Dr Kunal Sarkar, the chief cardiac surgeon and senior vice chairman of Medica Hospital in Kolkata, told Business Insider. Dr Sarkar’s view echoes the <a href="https://pib.gov.in/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=1706597">government guidelines</a> that said that the second dose of Covishield should be administered “not later than stipulated period of 8 weeks.” While a <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(21)00528-6/fulltext">Lancet study</a> has shown that a longer interval may improve the vaccine’s efficacy, the study itself recommended a 12-week interval between doses. Moreover, the vaccines currently in use are those that have been given emergency approval and it is wise to err on the side of caution especially with new variants of the virus emerging. “With COVAXIN, they maintain that the interval should be four weeks. With Covishield, as per their trial data, even they said four weeks. Then, based on certain experiences in the UK, it was stretched to six weeks,” said Sarkar. “Now, because of the irregularity in supply, it is anybody's guess… By and large, we are afraid if it stretches beyond eight weeks or so, then will the two-dose concept still remain valid? But when it came to being able to book an appointment, they passed the buck onto state governments and private vaccination centers. When the floodgates opened, the CoWIN app, Aarogya Setu app and UMANG app’s servers crashed. Having to repeat the first doses for even one person is a waste of precious resources. Managing a pandemic was never going to be easy. India may end up wasting millions of COVID-19 vaccine doses if there is no separate queue for second shots

The government of India has made a major policy change allowing everyone above the age of 18 to get a jab of the COVID-19 vaccine from May 1, as India opens up the third phase of the world’s largest vaccination drive. To improve the supply of the COVID-19 vaccine, the government has allowed states to directly buy them from the manufacturers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a Press Information Bureau statement, said that the “government has been working hard from over a year to ensure that maximum number of Indians are able to get the vaccine in the shortest possible of (sic) time.” Vaccine makers can sell half of their production directly to the state governments and in the open market at a pre-declared price. The decision on setting the age limit in the distribution of the vaccine has been left to the respective state governments. The second wave of COVID-19 infections has been a lot severe in India. The total number of infections in India has crossed 15 million. Latest data showed that for the last five days in a row, there have been at least 200,000 people contracting the virus daily. The official death toll due to COVID-19 in India is 1,78,769, but many fear that it could be a lot higher. India’s health infrastructure has been way too short of what was needed to tackle the pandemic with minimal fatality. As the world’s largest vaccine maker, there was hope that India would be able to beat the lack of health facilities with timely jabs for a large chunk of the population. However, the Narendra Modi administration has come under severe criticism for its handling of the COVID-19 crisis, particularly, the second wave and the slow pace of vaccinations is one of the reasons.
