The numbers exclude California, which has not reported data for the weekend.At least 56,768 people in the US are hospitalized with complications from COVID-19, an increase of 10,000 since October 30. US on track to smash record for COVID-19 hospitalizations

Mumbai, Jun 17 () Town planning authority MMRDA on Wednesday handed over the second phase of its COVID-19 hospital at BKC, comprising 1,000 beds, to local civic body BMC. The financial capital has been the worst-hit by the deadly coronavirus, reporting more than 60,000 infections and 3,170 fatalities so far. The second phase of the hospital was completed in 17 days. It has 100 beds with ICU services, while the other 900 are divided into oxygen and non-oxygen facility equally. Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray virtually inaugurated the facility, which has been handed over to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) had handed over around 1,037 beds with ICU facility to the BMC in May-end. The first facility had weathered the Nisarga cyclone which passed the Mumbai coast on June 3, but as a precaution, over 150 coronavirus patients were shifted to another location. While the first phase of the hospital was made for non-critical COVID-19 patients, the second phase will be treating critical symptomatic patients. The COVID-19 hospital, set up along with Jupiter Hospital, also has a pathology lab with facilities for blood tests, an ECG machine and other testing equipment along with rooms for doctors and nurses. "We are happy to set up this mega health care centre at BKC for the treatment of COVID positive patients. It gives me immense confidence that we were able to do our bit in this critical time of pandemic," Metropolitan Commissioner R A Rajeev said. According to MMRDA, the makeshift hospital has been constructed using German tent technology, and the structure is designed to be waterproof. "MMRDA has taken utmost care of the usual flood lines of the area where the hospital is being constructed. Interestingly, even during danger of cyclone Nisarga the previously constructed Phase-I Covid care centre at BKC remains unaffected," Rajeev added. The authority further said more than 500 patients are receiving treatment in the first phase of the COVID-19 care centre and nearly 30 patients are being discharged everyday. The authority has spent Rs 19.01 crore for the first facility, while the cost incurred for the second facility is yet to be ascertained. New Delhi, Apr 11 () State-run miner Nalco will fund an exclusive 200-bedded hospital for COVID-19 patients in Odisha, the company said on Saturday."Showing commitment and solidarity with the home state in the fight against COVID-19 pandemic, National Aluminium Company Ltd (NALCO) ... has come forward to fund an exclusive 200-bedded Covid19 hospital at Nabarangpur, Odisha," the PSU said in a statement.A tripartiteent in this context has been signed by Nalco, District Administration and Christian Hospital, Nabarangpur on Saturday, the statement said.The 200-bedded hospital will have medical facilities exclusively for treatment of Covid 19 patients.Under the agreement a Covid 19 exclusive isolation facility care centre has been made at B.Ed college, Hirli, Nabarangpur.With the exclusive Covid19 hospital being operational in the tribal dominated district of Nabarangpur, hopes are high that it will also be helpful for other adjoining districts of southern Odisha,viz Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri and Kalahandi. "We have stood with the people of Odisha in the past during natural calamities. This time, the crisis is more challenging and of unprecedented scale, and we at Nalco reiterate our pledge to extend our wholehearted support in whatever ways we can," company's CMD Sridhar Patra said. The study was one of the largest of its kind to pinpoint vaccine effectiveness against COVID-19 hospitalization in adolescents during a period where the highly infectious Delta variant was dominant, the study authors said.It "reinforces the importance of vaccination to protect US youths against severe COVID-19," they said, adding that, as in-person school attendance increases, vaccines were "imperative" to reduce the incidence of severe COVID-19 among young people.In early September, US pediatric hospital admissions reached their highest level since the start of the pandemic, <a href="https://gis.cdc.gov/grasp/covidnet/COVID19_5.html">the CDC's COVID-NET tracker shows</a>.As of Monday, 46% of US adolescents aged 12 to 15 years and 54% of those aged 16 to 17 years were fully vaccinated against COVID-19, <a href="https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#vaccination-demographics-trends">according to the CDC.</a> Pfizer's vaccine is currently the only shot in the US authorized for teens. The researchers found that, in a study of 464 teens admitted to 19 hospitals across 16 states between June 1 and September 30, 179 had been hospitalized with COVID-19 and 285 didn't have the virus. Nearly all, 97%, of those admitted with COVID-19 were unvaccinated, the study authors said. About two-thirds of those in the non-COVID-19 group hadn't had a shot, they said. Adolescents who had received one vaccine dose were excluded from the analysis.To get to the 93% figure, the researchers used statistical methods to compare the likelihood of being vaccinated among teens hospitalized with COVID-19 compared to teens hospitalized without the virus.In the group hospitalized with COVID-19, 77 of the 179, or 43%, required intensive care and two died, the study authors said. All of them were unvaccinated, they said, cautioning that vaccination status was sometimes self-reported so misclassification was possible in a few cases.Most people in the study, 72%, had an underlying medical condition, such as obesity, the authors said. But the study was too small to estimate vaccine effectiveness according to specific medical conditions, they said. The majority of teens, 61%, were from southern states due to high levels of COVID-19 in that region at the time.
