The company had posted a consolidated profit of Rs 2,454 crore in the year-ago period, <keyword id="20129733" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hindalco" source="keywords">Hindalco</keyword> Industries said in a regulatory filing. In a statement, the company said the consolidated PAT in the first quarter of FY'25 was Rs 3,074 crore, compared to Rs 2,454 crore in Q1 FY24, up by 25 % year-on-year (YoY)." Total income during the quarter under review rose to Rs 57,437 crore, over Rs 53,382 crore noted in the year-ago period. The consolidated revenue for the first quarter stood at Rs 57,013 crore, up 8% YoY, on account of better realisations and efficiencies in India operations. "Hindalco reported an <keyword id="19957744" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="EBITDA" source="keywords">EBITDA</keyword> of Rs 7,992 crore (vs Rs 6,109 crore in Q1FY24) in Q1 FY25, up 31% YoY, driven by lower input costs and higher volumes," the statement said. "Our strong Q1 results ride on the back of consistent operational excellence and cost optimisation which allowed us to leverage the higher average metal prices. "The <keyword id="20076812" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="copper" source="keywords">copper</keyword> business achieved its highest quarterly EBITDA driven by high domestic sales (especially downstream products), healthy by-product credits and better operational efficiencies following a successful planned shutdown," Satish Pai, Managing Director, Hindalco Industries said. The <keyword id="20472150" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aluminium" source="keywords">Aluminium</keyword> India upstream business recorded an 81% growth in EBITDA over the previous year, he said. "Looking ahead, the major capital formation phase of the downstream business is near completion, and from here on, we will explore growth opportunities in the upstream business, given our strong cash position," he explained. The company said its copper business delivered a new record-breaking performance in the first quarter, with EBITDA at an all-time high of Rs 805 crore, up 52% YoY, backed by higher average copper prices and robust operations. According to The Wall Street Journal, Amazon's entire devices unit has had an operating loss exceeding $5 billion in some recent years. Amazon is now looking into whether it should "focus on trying to add new capabilities to Alexa," according to the report. The cost-cutting review includes the devices unit with Alexa, a voice assistant available on a variety of Amazon devices. "The business has more than 10,000 employees and is a major recipient of investment capital," according to the report. It appears that the e-commerce giant is considering reducing its investments in Alexa-driven products. An Amazon spokesperson was quoted as saying that as part of this year's review, "we're of course taking into account the current macro-environment and considering opportunities to optimise costs." Amazon's shares went up by over 4 per cent on Thursday after the report about the cost-cutting review came out. Once part of our private lives as virtual assistants, more than 35 smart speaker models have now been discontinued (as of April 2022), 46 brands haven't released a new smart speaker since 2019 and 34 companies haven't released a new smart speaker since 2018. Although Amazon-branded smart speakers grew 33 per cent during the second quarter (Q2) compared to last year, other brands like Google and Apple were down 31 per cent and 57 per cent, respectively, according to global market research firm Omdia. Amazon has reportedly put its Alexa business under major cost-cutting review

Chadha believes that the more efficient the processes, the less time is wasted, which reduces costs and increases productivity and revenue. "As compared to 2019, our operating costs have gone down, with a significant rise in efficiency. This has happened by streamlining tasks and improving our overall quality and reliability," he states. However, these tech deployments come with a caveat – don’t lose the human touch. <keyword id="1417520" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rohit-pandey" source="Orion">Rohit Pandey</keyword>, Hotel Manager of Leela Bhartiya City Bengaluru notes that while technology and automation help bring better efficiency, the service industry cannot operate without the human touch or interaction and personalisation. All human touch points remain intact or are enhanced with technology’s adaptation," he emphasised. The hospitality industry traditionally underinvested in technology, spending less than 5% of their net room revenue. However, digitalisation is now on every hotelier's mind. Using it mindfully will help them create a frictionless guest experience and bring down operating costs while navigating the labour shortage, making it a win-win situation for all. New Delhi, July 11 (IANSlife) Highlighting the need to focus on sexual and reproductive health rights of girls and women, a policy paper released by Population Foundation of India (PFI) recommends applying a gender lens - using gender disaggregated data and evidence - to our response to COVID-19 and "increasing investments in family planning as the most cost-effective public health measure". Coming on World Population Day on July 11, the recommendations includes investing in the 3.3 million female frontline health workers who are the face of the Indian public health system and in many parts of the country the only health-care support. Extra efforts are required to strengthen the public health system and increase health budgets to optimise service delivery and health facilities as well as maintain supply chains, the paper notes. Using social and behaviour change communication (SBCC) campaigns to spread information and awareness on COVID-19 and address myths and misconceptions, is another key recommendation. The paper assesses the differential impact of COVID-19 and recommending timely measures to ensure women and girls remain central to COVID-19 response planning and recovery efforts. According to Poonam Muttreja, Executive Director of PFI, "The COVID-19 crisis has placed unprecedented demands on our social services and health care system. Women are increasingly at greater risk of sexual and domestic violence, disruptions to their healthcare services, stock outs of supplies of contraceptives and menstrual hygiene products and mental stress and anxiety. It is critical that we reassess our emergency response policies through a gender lens to improve planning and programming." Evidence from past epidemics as well as the existing body of evidence around the impact of COVID-19 suggests that the disruption of essential health services, including family planning put women and girls at risk of decreased access to services as resources are diverted from routine health services including pre- and post-natal health care, family planning and contraceptive supply, menstrual health and other reproductive health services, PFI said. The limited availability of essential health services, including sexual and reproductive health services will be detrimental in the long run. According to estimates by UNICEF, India would have the highest number of forecast births, at 20 million, in the nine months period dating from when COVID-19 was first declared a pandemic. The Guttmacher institute has projected that a 10 percent decline in use of reversible contraceptive methods in low -and-middle-income countries due to reduced access would result in an additional 49 million women with an unmet need for modern contraceptives and an additional 15 million unintended pregnancies over the course of a year. "When the technology is new or the demand is good, you don’t optimise. But, now that the volumes have started kicking in, we can get younger guys and train them," Rajesh Gopinathan, CEO and MD of TCS, told Business Insider. Last quarter, TCS hired 40% of the planned 30,000 fresh graduates. "It is a part of the plan to keep costs low," added Gopinathan. It hired another 14,097 employees this quarter, the highest ever number of employees that have been on boarded by the company in a quarter. As of 30 September 2019, TCS consolidated headcount stood at 450,738. "By valuing our employees for the contextual knowledge they possess, and continually investing in equipping them with newer technology skills, we have established an industry benchmark in our ability to attract talent across the world," stated Milind Lakkad, the global head of human resources at TCS.

In collaboration with the <keyword id="6835217" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Modern-Coach-Factory-Raebareli">Modern Coach Factory, Raebareli</keyword>, the ordinary Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches have been upgraded to include sensors that monitor various aspects of the carriage. Equipped with black boxes that form a multi-dimensional communication interface, it monitors critical components of the coach that are usually responsible for derailments and delays. The sensor-based on-board condition monitoring system (OBCMS) enables the timely detection of defects. According to the Indian Railways, this will help the department move from preventive maintenance to predictive maintenance in an attempt to provide ‘world-class’ facilities to passengers. What makes these coaches so smart? A <keyword id="6752987" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="smart-device">smart device</keyword> is anything that’s connected to other mechanisms or networks through Bluetooth, NFC, <keyword id="47655" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wi-Fi">Wi-Fi</keyword>, Li-Fi, 3G etc and can operate on its own or by interacting with other devices. In the case of the smart coach, there’s a <keyword id="604467" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Central-Processing-Unit">central processing unit</keyword> that connects over a <keyword id="17406" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="GSM">GSM</keyword> network. The OBCMS is officially called the Passenger Information and Coach Computing Unit, or ‘PICCU’, an industrial grade computer that monitors two aspects, coach maintenance and the passenger interface. Coach maintenance entails relaying information about the train’s health back to PICCU using a vibration-based self-powered harvesting sensor that’s placed on the axle box. The sensor is capable of predicting hard spots and defects on the railway track, the wheels of the train and the bearings. Using that information, the Indian Railways can plan for maintenance accordingly to optimise their resources on a ‘need-basis’ rather being premature or once something already goes wrong. And since the railway tracks are also monitored, the probability of line failures should decrease. The same goes for sensors fitted into the train’s air conditioning (AC) system, that will relay information about the AC condition with alerts for when repairs are required. In addition, the Water Level Indicator (WLI) technology will let PICCU know if the water level drops below sufficient levels. For passengers, there’s an integrated information system that informs them of the train’s location, the expected time of arrival and how fast the train is going. The Indian Railways already has the RailYatri app that tries to do that same thing, but currently lacks the accuracy to pull it off. More importantly, there are at least 6 CCTV cameras on board the coach to implement more stringent security measures. It’s not only about the security of passengers but also monitoring the behaviour and actions of the railway staff on-board. That being said, in case of an emergency, a talkback system has been integrated so that passengers and the train guard can communicate directly. It’s also useful in cases where direct assistance may not be feasible, and instructions can be relayed over the network. And, of course, the coach will have Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities for passengers to check-in and the browse the internet per their convenience.

India’s new smart coaches aim to cut maintenance costs for Indian Railways

One company, Pubshare, has sued Google for nearly $1 million in revenue it allegedly earned from ads, which Google declined to pass on to the company.
The company is owned by Peter Ogtanyan, according to a copy of his lawsuit filed in a California state court. Pubshare published humorous viral images for social media, such as "mind-blowing street art." It used Google's AdSense software, which allows companies to run Google search ads on their site and gain revenue from them. He gained 300 million views and 1.5 million clicks via AdSense, and had a click-through rate of 0.45%, his suit claims. That traffic generated about $1 million between September and October 2013, the suit alleges, before Google sent him this notice saying it would not pay any of the money his ads had earned:

Google asked the court to dismiss the case but a judge ruled to let it proceed. The company has recently indicated that it is bowing to pressure from publishers: <a href="http://adsense.blogspot.co.uk/2012/12/working-better-together-protecting.html?m=1">In a blog post it said it would be "making some changes"</a> when considering whether publishers should be banned.&#xa0;
"Allowing an AdSense publisher to accumulate hundreds of thousands of dollars in earnings without any warnings of improper practices, and then abruptly refusing to pay out any of those earnings by means of auto-generated form e-mails is the very definition of bad faith," says Randy Gaw, a lawyer at the San Francisco firm Gaw Poe, which represents Ogtanyan.
Google declined to comment on this story when contacted by Business Insider.
<h3>Google faces a bunch of lawsuits</h3>
Another website operator told Business Insider that it earned more than $500,000 in a few weeks from Google's AdSense advertising programme before being banned from using Google and losing all the money in its account.
Four different companies have told Business Insider they are talking to their lawyers about suing the search giant for fraud. Three have actually sued, according to copies of the litigation obtained by Business Insider.
In total, Business Insider has heard from seven companies (including the four above) that say they lost tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars when they were suddenly banned from AdSense. All the companies claim they were following Google's strict rules about how to place ads on their site. Some of them say they were encouraged or given approval for their ad plans by Google's own sales staff. The companies showed us emails, images from their AdSense account dashboards, and online chat transcripts with Google staff to demonstrate their problems.
In all the cases, the companies say they would have been happy to change their websites in any way that Google asked. Appeals are limited, they say. "Google's appeal form required Plaintiff to limit his appeal to 1,000 characters," Ogtanyan's lawsuit claims.
In more than one case, Google staff told the publishers their sites were within Google's AdSense rules - and then they were banned, losing their money. We collected these specific examples:

<li>A viral photo site, Pubshare.com, that lost nearly $1 million.</li>
<li>A viral news site that lost $500,000.</li>
<li>A business accelerator site that lost $200,000.</li>
<li>A publisher who lost $300,000.</li>
<li>A web-based <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/19-year-old-lost-46000-in-google-adsense-rules-ban-2014-8">text messaging site, MesTextos.com, that lost $46,000</a>.</li>
<li>A quiz site, QuizDee, that lost $35,000.</li>
<li>An Indian storytelling site, Evrystry.com, that also lost $35,000</li>
</ul>
Some of the companies agreed only to talk privately because their lawyers advised them not to speak to the media if they were preparing legal action against Google.
<h3>$200,000 a month ... gone</h3>
The owner of one company, who did not want his name published, told us that his site had been so successful that after it had earned $200,000 or more in one month he checked with Google to make sure he was in compliance with the rules. Three AdSense reps reassured him that his site was compliant with the rules. So he invested more money into the site and his AdSense account earned more than $500,000 in revenues. Then he was banned from AdSense for monetising invalid clicks.

Payments to you may be withheld to reflect or adjusted to exclude any amounts refunded or credited to advertisers and any amounts arising from invalid activity, as determined by Google in its sole discretion.?
... Google may at any time terminate the Agreement, or suspend or terminate the participation of any Property in the Services for any reason. If we terminate the Agreement due to your breach or due to invalid activity, we may withhold unpaid amounts or charge back your account ...
If Google detects a site that may be breaking the rules, then generally Google will send a note to the publisher explaining which policy was in question and, in many cases, give them a chance to make changes to their pages to keep the account in good standing. Publishers are also given an opportunity to appeal policy decisions.
Google has recently softened its stance toward publishers who get banned like this. In two blog posts it has indicated that it will consider publishers' cases more generously, <a href="http://adsense.blogspot.co.uk/2012/12/working-better-together-protecting.html?m=1">particularly looking at tenure</a>, and it has given publishers more warnings about <a href="http://adsense.blogspot.co.uk/2011/11/top-5-things-you-should-know-about.html?m=1">the nature of invalid botnet traffic that can show up on sites</a>.
More broadly, <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/google-display-ad-viewability-study-2014-12">Google is engaged in a high-profile war against low quality advertising.</a> It recently revealed that more than half of ads served on Google properties are never seen by humans. The company wants to be seen to be leading the way against garbage ads. Google has millions of ad customers. Many of them are unsophisticated publishers who may be buying traffic from botnets or other illegitimate sources. Google cannot explain to them why their ads are being pulled for fear of educating botnet operators on how to get around Google's policies.
<h3>Sales staff say yes, but compliance staff say no</h3>
The problem, however, is that while Google's compliance staff are trying to enforce the rules, Google's sales staff are sometimes encouraging publishers and not alerting them that their revenue streams have fallen afoul of rules that will get them banned. The contradiction comes because publishers believe that the sales staff are able to tell them that their sites are in compliance and won't get banned. In fact, a different staff team at Google makes decisions on publisher bans.
Here is the most egregious example we were given. In this case, a publisher who was seeing a sudden, massive increase in traffic and ad revenue deliberately checked with a Google rep to make sure the company was OK with how the revenue was being earned. After a conversation in which the publisher discusses changes to his page to bring it into compliance with Google's ad rules, the Google rep assures the company that everything is OK:

Another source told us that in September, "I was surprised last night when I received a notification from Google that my AdSense was disabled. I didn't even received any warnings regarding any violations. Last month I earned $72,000 and got paid. This current month so far (September) I was earning $52,000 and lost it."
"According to the letter, my AdSense account was found to be non-compliant with their AdSense program policies. What? Last month, I was contacted by a representative from Google and told me my website was doing well and offered further optimisation. I'm confused why they suddenly banned my 2 year old AdSense account. :-("
<h3>"You may not create new accounts"</h3>
Here is a typical email from Google informing a publisher it will not be getting its money. Note that the publisher has lost its appeal, meaning that Google has looked at the issue twice and both times found the publisher not to be in compliance with its terms of service:

This source's website may have been banned because it uses news that has been reblogged from other sites. Google does not allow "scraped" content. The source complained that plenty of mainstream sites do the same thing, and that even if that were true he was not given a chance to rectify the situation.
Because AdSense bans cost companies so much money, and because they are permanent, there is a growing number of businesses that have come to believe Google's confiscation of money they earned via AdSense is unlawful. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/google-adsense-class-action-lawsuit-2014-5">Google is also currently being sued in federal court the U.S. over allegations that it suddenly and without explanation withholds ad money from website publishers</a> once their sites become successful. Earlier this year, the company was the target of an infamous, and obviously fake, conspiracy theory that publishers who make $5,000 or more per month are banned from the system right before their cheques are paid. (The theory has a giant hole in it - Google collects revenues only when it delivers those ads, so banning successful sites would actually make Google poorer.) This theory has been making the rounds for years.
There is one obvious aspect of the AdSense rules that might dampen the ire of publishers who are critics: Google only takes the money after it has been earned. These publishers might have less to complain about if their earnings were paid out before they were exiled from the system.
