After initial hiccups, Zomato has started grocery delivery in over 80 Indian cities with supplying essentials and is set to launch takeaway service in Australia and Portugal to support restaurants, its CEO Deepinder Goyal said on Tuesday. He said that all proceeds from the Zomato Gold subscriptions in April would go towards supporting restaurant workers in need and the users will get an additional year of Gold free. "This has already been launched in India and the UAE, and will be live in other markets over the next few days," the Zomato CEO said in a statement. "The world has come to a halt, and unfortunately, the restaurant industry that we are in, is one of the worst hit. It is in times like these when we really need to rise to the occasion and support each other to the best of our abilities," Goyal emphasized. The fool delivery platform has extended all paid Zomato Gold memberships by two months at zero cost. While offices, malls are shut, ‘essential services’ like grocery stores, pharmacies are allowed to stay open. In a relief for the Indian e-commerce sector, online retail too fell under the essential services category. However, the relief was been short-lived. Delivery agents from Amazon, Flipkart, Zomato, Grofers, Milkbasket and others were stopped by the police on the roads. Some have also been arrested. On Janata <keyword id="23410" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Curfew">curfew</keyword> (March 22), Grofers said that its delivery agents were stopped and arrested by the police across the country, leading to a delay of over 60,000 orders. Another <keyword id="2709620" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="grocery-delivery">grocery delivery</keyword> startup Milkbasket said that its staff, vendors and vehicles are being pushed back from the roads by local police, disrupting our operations. “We are being told to shut down our distribution centers. Yesterday we had to cancel thousands of orders. We could only operate at 40% capacity in Gurgaon. Even lower in Noida. We might have to cancel all the orders today, impacting over 150,000 families across 4 cities,” said the company’s official statement. Even their warehouses are being asked to shut down. But they aren’t alone. E-commerce behemoths Amazon and Flipkart are facing similar issues. “We are working with the local authorities to enable us to perform these important services providing safety for our delivery associates and allowing them to make sure those priority goods can arrive safely at our customers’ homes without any disruption,” an Amazon spokesperson told Business Insider. While they intend to move ahead with uninterrupted services during the testing times, they are also working with local authorities to work on the issues. “There are operational issues on-ground which impact our ability to seamlessly service the communities as they stay indoors. We are working with the central and state government as an industry to solve these challenges,” a Flipkart spokesperson told Business Insider. A Zomato spokesperson told Business Insider that these are unprecedented times. “The government has provided strong guidance which we are adhering by and trying our best to execute on the ground. Coordinating with multiple local authorities is challenging however, we are hoping to iron this out soon,” said the spokesperson As people stay at home, they are relying more and more on online deliveries. But if these issues continue to rise, it could lead to the delay and cancellation of thousands of orders from across the country. Perhaps, having a uniform for delivery agents could be the answer, but one of the e-commerce giants told Business Insider that most of the companies already have an uniform and it hasn’t helped. All the e-commerce companies are appealing to the government to sort out problems for seamless deliveries of essential supplies. “A suggestion would be to issue access permits / ID cards to staff engaged in essential services such as grocery delivery, medicines, food delivery, and others,” suggested Milkbasket. Swiggy and Zomato beware! Amazon begins food delivery in India

During the protest at Behala in the southwestern part of the city on Saturday, some agitators claimed they have quit their jobs as <keyword id="830092" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zomato">Zomato</keyword> has a sizeable Chinese investment and urged people to stop ordering food via the company. In 2018, Ant Financial, a part of Chinese major Alibaba, had invested USD 210 million in Zomato for a 14.7 per <keyword id="9478067" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="cent-stake">cent stake</keyword>. The food delivery major recently raised an additional USD 150 million from Ant Financial. "Chinese companies are making profits from here and attacking the Army of our country. Another protester said they were ready to starve but would not work for companies that have investment from China. Zomato employees burn company T-shirts in Kolkata to protest Ladakh standoff

E-commerce giant Amazon and Alibaba-backed <keyword id="964794" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BigBasket">BigBasket</keyword> have got approval to deliver liquor in West Bengal, according to a document. Online grocery platform BigBasket said this will be the company's first foray into the country's liquor delivery segment. The clearance also signals Amazon's entry into the space, likely for the first in India. State-owned West Bengal State Beverages Corporation Ltd (BevCo) invited the two companies to sign the agreements for empanelment for home delivery after finding them eligible, as per a notice dated June 19. BevCo, the sole wholesaler of liquor in West Bengal, also invited two Kolkata-based companies -- Senrysa Technologies Pvt Ltd and Golden Goenka Commerce Pvt Ltd for the signing of agreements. Asked when BigBasket would start operations, its CEO Hari Menon told PTI, "I cannot confirm now how soon we will start, but yes it will be the first for the company." Amazon did not comment on the approval. Food ordering platforms <keyword id="830092" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zomato">Zomato</keyword> and <keyword id="6358977" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="swiggy">Swiggy</keyword> have already started delivering alcohol in West Bengal with Kolkata and Siliguri after getting the required approvals, followed by the signing of agreements. (Eds: Adding details) New Delhi, May 26 () Leading food ordering and delivery platforms Zomato and Swiggy on Tuesday started home delivery of alcohol in Odisha, less than a week after starting similar services in Jharkhand, as part of efforts to prevent overcrowding of people at shops amid the coronavirus pandemic. Starting with Bhubaneswar, the company will soon expand to other cities like Rourkela, Balasore, Balangir, Sambalpur, Berhampur and Cuttack, Zomato said in a statement. In a separate statement, Swiggy said its home delivery service went live in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela on Tuesday after obtaining necessary approvals from the Odisha government, and plans to expand to other major cities in the state. Liquor shops were mostly closed in the first three phases of the nationwide lockdown that started on March 25. In the fourth phase, which began from May 18, liquor shops have opened except in certain places. The extended lockdown is to end on May 31. Earlier this month, the Supreme Court asked states to consider non-direct contact or online sales and home delivery of liquor during the lockdown period to prevent the spread of coronavirus on account of crowding at the shops. "We're happy to be of service to our users in Odisha who can now use Zomato to get alcohol delivered in addition to grocery and food delivery," Zomato Vice President Rakesh Ranjan said. The company is working with excise departments to ensure end-to-end compliance with safety guidelines and is also introducing consumption and identity verification protocols to promote responsible ordering as well as consumption, he added. There would be age checks at the time of ordering as well as when the product is delivered. Users will be required to upload a valid ID proof to be eligible for ordering which would later be verified by the delivery partner at the time of handing over the order. There would also be product category limits to promote responsible ordering, it added. "We are thankful to the Odisha government and the liquor retail industry in enabling safe and compliant delivery of alcoholic beverages in Odisha. We look forward to building this partnership together," Ranjan said. The service named Zomato Wine Shops would be available on the home page of the Zomato app and will allow users to select any product from the listed retailers and get it delivered right to their doorsteps, Zomato said. In similar vein, Swiggyy said online processing and home delivery of alcohol will be through the 'Wine Shops' category in Odisha. "After successfully launching alcohol delivery in Jharkhand, we are expanding our services to Odisha, starting with Bhubaneswar and Rourkela. Cuttack and Berhampur will follow in the next couple of days," a Swiggy Spokesperson said in a statement. Consistent with Swiggy's approach, the company has leveraged technology to automate the customer verification process and solve an important challenge and support the government with enabling safe deliveries, spokesperson added. The company is partnering with authorised retailers across major cities after validating their license and other required documents as outlined by the state government, Swiggy said. Both the delivery partners and retailers are being virtually trained to facilitate smooth processing and fulfillment of orders, it added. To place orders, customers need to complete an instant age verification by uploading a picture of their valid government ID, followed by a selfie which the platform will use for authentication, Swiggy said. The company has partnered with HyperVerge to enable AI-face recognition for mandatory age verification and user authentication for alcohol deliveries, it added. "After gaining good traction in Ranchi post launching the service last week, Swiggy has expanded its services in other major cities in Jharkhand including Ramgarh and Deoghar," Swiggy said. To avail the home delivery service, customers in Odisha can access the 'Wine Shops' category by updating their Swiggy app, it added.
