New Delhi, Mar 1 () After posting their worst week since the 2008 financial crisis, Indian equity benchmarks will take further cues from global markets in the coming sessions as investors assess the impact of the coronavirus outbreak, analysts said. The BSE Sensex logged its second-biggest one-day fall in history on Friday, mirroring a carnage in world equities amid fears that the virus epidemic may turn out to be a bigger threat to the global economy than initially anticipated. More than 85,000 people have been infected in over 50 countries and over 2,900 have died. According to Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services, the risk to markets will increase if the infection lasts longer and continues to spread at a fast pace. "The numbers, regarding the spread of the disease, and how far it can be contained, will drive the markets next week. Measures by governments to boost respective economies will also be watched out for, post the Chinese government's support to bolster the economy," he said. Stocks are also expected to react to the GDP growth numbers released after market hours on Friday. India's gross domestic product (GDP) growth slipped to a nearly 7-year low of 4.7 per cent in October-December 2019, weighed by a contraction in manufacturing sector output. "Markets may have fallen on the coronavirus scare, but it may be worthwhile to ponder on the direct relationship between GDP growth and earnings growth to understand whether the markets have run ahead of the earnings trajectory, at least for some time now," said Joseph Thomas, Head of Research - Emkay Wealth Management. In the forthcoming week, investors will also track SBI Cards IPO and RITES OFS by the government, said Jimeet Modi, Founder and CEO, SAMCO Securities &amp; StockNote. "However, no matter the outcome, markets would broadly be driven by the virus and global sentiment," he added. Fundamentally, Indian bourses have been trading at higher valuations and hence a correction was needed to align the markets as per the mean reversion theory, he pointed out. "Hence, this week's fall is a valuation play with coronavirus as the scapegoat. The frothy valuations needed the markets to correct," he said. The BSE Sensex crashed 1,448.37 points, or 3.64 per cent, to close at 38,297.29 on Friday. Sunday's figure came after Saturday's record 45,422 cases, Xinhua news agency quoted the Public Health Agency as saying. Since the beginning of the pandemic, France has registered a total of 1,138,507 coronavirus. On October 23, it became the second European country to register more than one million confirmed cases after Spain. Also on Sunday, the country reported 116 new fatalities, taking the death toll to 34,761, official data revealed. In addition, 17 per cent of those tested for the virus now have positive results in France, after reaching 16 per cent on Saturday against 15.1 per cent the day before, in comparison to just 4.5 per cent in early September. The ongoing second wave of the pandemic has forced the French government to impose tougher restrictive measures including curfews in a majority of regions across the country. More than two-thirds of the French population, or around 46 million people, have been requested to stay home between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. for six weeks. On October 24, the National Assembly adopted at the first reading the extension of the state of health emergency until February 16, 2021. The bill authorizes the executive to introduce restrictions to face a "period which will be long and difficult", warned Health Minister Olivier Veran. The toll will "grow heavier in the coming days and weeks, whatever we do" due to the dynamics of the epidemic, he added. France reports new record high single-day Covid-19 cases

In a major global study, researchers have revealed that long-term exposure to air pollution may be linked to 15 per cent of Covid-19 deaths worldwide. According to the study, published in the journal Cardiovascular Research, in Europe the proportion was about 19 per cent, in North America it was 17 per cent, and in East Asia about 27 per cent. "Since the numbers of deaths from Covid-19 are increasing all the time, it's not possible to give exact or final numbers of Covid-19 deaths per country that can be attributed to air pollution," said study author Jos Lelieveld from Max Planck Institute in Germany. "However, as an example, in the UK there have been over 44,000 <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> deaths and we estimate that the fraction attributable to air pollution is 14 per cent, meaning that more than 6,100 deaths could be attributed to air pollution," Lelieveld added. The researchers used epidemiological data from the previous US and Chinese studies of air pollution and Covid-19 and the SARS outbreak in 2003, supported by additional data from Italy. They combined this with satellite data showing global exposure to polluting fine particles known as 'particulate matter' that is less than or equal to 2.5 microns in diameter (known as PM2.5) to create a model to calculate the fraction of coronavirus deaths that could be attributable to long-term exposure to PM2.5. The results are based on epidemiological data collected up the third week in June 2020 and the researchers said that a comprehensive evaluation will need to follow after the pandemic has subsided. Estimates for individual countries show, for example, that air pollution contributed to 29 per cent of coronavirus deaths in the Czech Republic, 27 per cent in China, 26 per cent in Germany, 22 per cent in Switzerland, 21 per cent in Belgium, 19 per cent in The Netherlands, 15 per cent in Italy and 14 per cent in the UK. Referring to previous work that suggests that the fine particulates in air pollution may prolong the atmospheric lifetime of infectious viruses and help them to infect more people. Lelieveld said: "It's likely that particulate matter plays a role in 'super-spreading events' by favouring transmission." According to the researchers, the particulate matter seems to increase the activity of a receptor on cell surfaces, called ACE-2, that is known to be involved in the way Covid-19 infects cells. "So, we have a 'double hit': air pollution damages the lungs and increases the activity of ACE-2, which in turn leads to enhanced uptake of the virus by the lungs and probably by the blood vessels and the heart," the authors wrote. Hit by the coronavirus crisis and the nation-wide lockdown, the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) has urged landlords in the food and beverage (F&amp;B) or restaurant industry to waive their rents and the common area maintenance charges till June or till the lockdown lasts. In an open letter to the landlords in the food and beverage (F&amp;B) business, the industry body representing over 5 lakh restaurants said that although the shutdown may remain for a month two, the industry will take many more months to revive. "While this shutdown may continue for a month or two, we will take many more months post that to get back on our feeta and we will not be able to sail through this period smoothly without your support," said the letter NRAI also sought that the common area maintenance charge should be taken at 50 per cent of the agreed rate for the six months after the lockdown ends. It also said that there should not be "minimum guaranteed rents for six months post that and instead work on a pure revenue share equivalent to 50 per cent of the agreed terms up to a maximum of 10 per cent of monthly revenues." NRAI President Anurag Katriar said: "This appeal is aimed at ensuring our mere survival during such extraordinarily troubled times. We aren't trying to be profiteer at the expense of the landlords. As long-standing business partners of ours, we are hopeful that the landlords will extend their support in these times of unprecedented crisis." The industry body, last week wrote to the Finance Minister seeking economic relief for the restaurant industry in view of the disruption caused by the coronavirus scare in the country. Acknowledging the recent relief measures by the government including the deferment of GST return filings, he said that the sector would require a larger stimulus package to revive the sector and support its over 70 lakh employees. "We will need a much bigger stimulus package from the government whenever we get back to the stage of rebooting our business," he said.
