According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), a cumulative total of 3,09,41,264 samples have been tested up to August 17 with 8,99,864 samples being tested on Monday. Of the 876 fresh deaths reported, 228 are from Maharashtra, 120 from Tamil Nadu, 115 from Karnataka, 82 from Andhra Pradesh, 66 from Uttar Pradesh, 45 from West Bengal, 51 from Punjab, 23 from Madhya Pradesh, 18 from Delhi, 15 from Gujarat, 13 from Kerala, 12 from Haryana, 11 from Rajasthan and 10 from Odisha. Nine fatalities have been reported from Chhattisgarh, eight each from Assam and Telangana, seven each from Bihar and Goa, six each from Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand and Uttarakhand, four from Puducherry, three from Tripura, while Andmana and Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh and Manipur have registered one fatality each. Of the total 51,797 deaths, Maharashtra has reported the maximum at 20,265, followed by 5,886 in Tamil Nadu, 4,214 in Delhi, 4,062 in Karnataka, 2,800 in Gujarat, 2,732 in Andhra Pradesh, 2,515 in Uttar Pradesh, 2,473 in West Bengal and 1,128 in Madhya Pradesh. So far, 887 people have died of COVID-19 in Rajasthan, 863 in Punjab, 711 in Telangana, 550 in Haryana, 548 in Jammu and Kashmir, 468 in Bihar, 353 in Odisha, 250 in Jharkhand, 197 in Assam, 169 in Kerala and 158 in Uttarakhand. Chhattisgarh has registered 150 deaths, Puducherry 114, Goa 111, Tripura 62, Chandigarh 30, Andaman and Nicobar Islands 29, Himachal Pradesh 19, Manipur 17, Ladakh 14, Nagaland eight, Meghalaya six, Arunachal Pradesh five, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu two and Sikkim one. The health ministry stressed that more than 70 per cent of the deaths occurred due to comorbidities. "Our figures are being reconciled with the Indian Council of Medical Research," the ministry said, adding that state-wise distribution of figures is subject to further verification and reconciliation. India's total coronavirus cases breach 27-lakh mark

<ul><li>As countries around the world race to develop a vaccine for <keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid-19">Covid-19</keyword> virus, the Japanese researchers have identified an effective treatment for the deadly over-activation of the inflammatory response seen in many severe Covid-19 patients.</li><li>In a study, published in the journal PNAS, the researchers are working to understand exactly how Covid-19 causes the myriad of symptoms that seem to linger long after active viral infection.</li></ul>As countries around the world race to develop a vaccine for Covid-19 virus, the Japanese researchers have identified an effective treatment for the deadly over-activation of the inflammatory response seen in many severe Covid-19 patients. In a study, published in the journal PNAS, the researchers are working to understand exactly how Covid-19 causes the myriad of symptoms that seem to linger long after active viral infection. Cytokines are a group of small proteins that can either enhance or inhibit our body's immune response to infection, trauma, and diseases such as cancer. One of their main roles is to stimulate inflammation, which initiates the healing process. The problem is, overstimulation of the inflammatory response has an array of harmful complications, ranging from asthma to severe autoimmune diseases, the team said. One such complication, called cytokine release syndrome (CRS), is seen in patients suffering a hyperimmune response to microbial infection or trauma and can lead to multiple organ failure and even death."Despite knowing which cytokines are involved, there is still no specific immunotherapy for CRS and treatment is limited to supportive care," said study lead author Sujin Kang from the Osaka University in Japan. "To better understand the molecular mechanisms of CRS pathogenesis, we first studied the cytokine profiles of 91 patients diagnosed with CRS associated with bacterial sepsis, acute respiratory distress syndrome, or burns," Kang added. Strikingly, patients from all three groups had elevated levels of proinflammatory cytokines IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, and MCP-10, as well as a protein called PAI-1, which causes small blood clots in vessels throughout the body, including the lungs. Importantly, increased PAI-1 levels are associated with more severe cases of pneumonia, a common cause of death among Covid-19 patients.Because IL-6 was positively associated with the levels of the other cytokines and PAI-1, the researchers concluded that IL-6 signalling is crucial for the development of CRS following infection or trauma, and may play a role in the pathogenesis of Covid-19. "Examination of cytokine profiles in severe Covid-19 patients revealed an increase in IL-6 early in the disease process, causing the release of PAI-1 from blood vessels," Asaid study senior author Tadamitsu Kishimoto. "Interestingly, PAI-1 levels were significantly higher in Covid-19 patients with a severe respiratory impediment," Kishimoto added. Most significantly though, when severe Covid-19 patients were treated with a human monoclonal antibody-based drug called Actemra, which blocks IL-6 signalling, PAI-1 levels rapidly declined and severe disease symptoms were alleviated, the tea noted. COVID-19: Employee of Air India subsidiary tests positive

With a spike of 70,589 coronavirus cases and 776 deaths in 24 hours, India's tally on Tuesday breached the 61 lakh-mark with a total of 61,45,291 cases. Out of these, 9,47,576 are currently active; 51,01,397 have been discharged, while 96,318 lost the battle against the viral disease. On July 17, India had logged 10 lakh cases, which then doubled to 20 lakh on August 7. The country added another 10 lakh on August 23 and went past 40 lakh on September 5. In 11 days, it added another 10 lakh cases thus taking the total to 50 lakh cases. Thirteen days later the tally has mounted to 61 lakh. While the recovery rate stands at 82.58 per cent, one of the highest in the world; the fatality rate has come down to 1.57 per cent, the data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said. Maharashtra continues to be the worst-hit with a total of 13,39,232 cases, including 35,571 deaths; followed by Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. According to the data from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 11,42,811 sample tests were conducted across the country in a single day on Monday, taking the total number of samples tested so far to 7,31,10,041. On the global front, India rallies behind the US, which has recorded 7,147,751 cases and 2,05,062 deaths.
