"If he doesn't allow it to come out, that would be OK, but of course, there may be retaliation. India lifted its ban on the export of hydroxychloroquine - Trump's unproven coronavirus 'cure' - hours after the president threatened 'retaliation' if it didn't do so

<keyword id="46384" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Glenmark">Glenmark</keyword> Pharmaceuticals on Saturday said it has launched antiviral drug Favipiravir, under the brand name <keyword id="9431798" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="FabiFlu">FabiFlu</keyword>, for the treatment of patients with mild to moderate COVID-19. The Mumbai-based drug firm had on Friday received manufacturing and marketing approval from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI). FabiFlu is the first oral Favipiravir-approved medication for the treatment of COVID-19, the company said in a statement. "This approval comes at a time when cases in India are spiralling like never before, putting a tremendous pressure on our healthcare system," Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Chairman and Managing Director Glenn Saldanha said. The company hopes that the availability of an effective treatment such as FabiFlu will considerably help assuage this pressure, and offer patients in India a much needed and timely therapy option, he added. Glenmark launches first oral coronavirus drug in India called FabiFlu

<ul><li>An ayurvedic drug called ZingiVir-H has been approved for conducting clinical trials on coronavirus patients in India by the Clinical Trial Registry of India (CTRI). </li><li>The sample size of the study is 112 patients with 15 Covid-19 positive patients already enrolled. </li><li>Hareendran Nair, the founder of the Pankajaksthuri Herbal Research Foundation in Kerala where the drug was developed, believes the results of trials will be available by the end of May. </li></ul>An ayurvedic drug in India called ZingiVir-H has gotten the rubber stamp to conduct clinical trials on adults who have tested positive for coronavirus in India. Currently, it’s only being tested at the Mysore Medical College and Research Institute (MMCRI) with a sample size of 112 patients with 15 people already enrolled — but it is open to recruitment. According to Hareendran Nair, the founder of the Pankajaksthuri Herbal Research Foundation in Kerala where the drug was developed, other medical colleges in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana and Delhi have also been approached. This is the first known ayurvedic approach to cure Covid-19. Testing ZingiVir-H as a drug for coronavirus The Clinical Trial Registry of India (<a href="http://ctri.nic.in/Clinicaltrials/showallp.php?mid1=43168&amp;EncHid=&amp;userName=Zingivir">CTRI</a>) has given the nod for a randomised controlled single-blind trial to find out if ZingiVir-H is safe and effective as a way to boost immunity in Covid-19 patients. For coronavirus, a 500 mg tablet will be given to patients every 3 hours between 6:00 am to 9:00 pm for at least 10 days, but no more than 15 days to determine the outcome. The clinical trials will measure a coronavirus patients’ improvement as per a 7-point ordinal scale to determine the odds ratio — the odds for improvement. On the day that a patient enters the trial will be the baseline, followed by recording time points on Day 7 and Day 15. “We are expecting the results by the end of May. I am not sure about the result. The US is banking on India’s Hydroxychloroquine medicine — yet experts have their doubts

Trump said he spoke to Prime Minister Modi on Saturday morning and made a request to release Hydroxycholoroquine - an old and inexpensive drug used to treat malaria - for the US. "I called Prime Minister Modi of India this morning. They make large amounts of Hydroxychloroquine. India is giving it a serious consideration," Trump said at his daily news conference at the White House on Saturday. India's Directorate General of Foreign Trade on March 25 banned the export of Hydroxychloroquine but said that certain shipments on humanitarian grounds may be allowed on a case-by-case basis. With more than three lakh confirmed cases of coronavirus infection and over 8,000 fatalities, the US has emerged as the global epicentre of the deadly coronavirus disease to which there has been no cure. Trump said he would appreciate if India releases the amount of Hydroxychloroquine that the US has ordered. "And I said I would appreciate if they (India) would release the amounts that we ordered," he said, without mentioning that quantity of Hydroxychloroquine that has been ordered by US companies from India. Scientists across the world are racing against time to find either a vaccine or a therapeutic cure to the virus that has so far killed more than 64,000 people and infected 1.2 million in more than 150 countries. Based on some initial results, the Trump administration is banking heavily on using Hydroxychloroquine for the successful treatment of coronavirus. Following a quick provisional approval from the US Food and Drug Administration last Saturday, the malaria drug along with a combination of some other drug is being used in the treatment of about 1,500 COVID-19 patients in New York, the epicentre in the US. According to Trump, the drug is yielding positive results. If successful, he told reporters that it would be a gift from heaven. In the next several weeks, health experts in the US have projected between 100,000 to 200,000 deaths due to the coronavirus, which due to human-to-human transmission is spreading like a wildfire in the country. In anticipation of it being a successful drug in the treatment of coronavirus, the US has already stockpiled some 29 million doses of Hydroxychloroquine. It is in this context Trump requested Modi to help US get millions of doses of Hydroxychloroquine, a malaria drug that can be produced at mass scale in India. Prime Minister Modi on Saturday said he held a detailed discussion on the coronavirus crisis with President Trump and resolved to deploy the full strength of the Indo-US partnership to fight the global pandemic."We had a good discussion and agreed to deploy the full strength of the India-US partnership to fight COVID-19," Modi wrote on Twitter on his "extensive" telephonic conversation with Trump.The prime minister and the US president exchanged views on the pandemic and its impact on the global well-being and economy, a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said.Stressing on the special relationship between the two countries, Modi reiterated India's solidarity with the US in overcoming this global crisis together. Thereafter, India decided to lift a partial ban on Hydroxychloroquine – a drug used in the possible cure of Covid-19. India is a net exporter of many generic drugs and most of them land in the US. In fact, Indian companies are the top suppliers of low-margin generics in the country whereas most top US manufacturers like Pfizer prefer to sell the drugs that they discover and hold patents to. US overtakes Italy in coronavirus death tally

Dubai, Apr 16 () India is fast-tracking procedures to supply hydroxychloroquine, a drug considered to be efficient in fighting the coronavirus, to the UAE after a request from the country's government, media reports here quoted the Indian envoy as saying.India's Ambassador to the UAE Pavan Kapoor said there is a huge demand for the anti-malarial drug from many countries and India is considering it on a case to case basis."As the drug is on the restricted list, we are obviously giving exception to the UAE, given the friendly relations between the two countries," Khaleej Times quoted Kapoor as saying.The global demand for hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) manufactured by India got a boost after some studies indicated that the drug, when paired with azithromycin, helped clear patients of the virus at a much faster rate than seen usually."There was a request from the government of the UAE to help out with the supply of HCQ," the Gulf News quoted Kapoor as saying.Kapoor said a few companies in the UAE requested the government to import the drug to the country."We received a note verbale from the UAE government also seeking support for the supply through those companies," he said."Whatever requests were made, we made sure that they reached the right authorities in the right format since this is a restricted medicine," Kapoor said.He said India is permitting the export of HCQ on a case-by-case basis on the request from governments of friendly countries. With the UAE government backing up the local companies' request for import for the medicine, he said, India is fast-tracking the procedures.The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention on Wednesday announced 432 new cases of the Covid-19 coronavirus, bringing the total number of cases to 5,365.The country has reported 33 deaths, including five expats of different nationalities. Ferreira said his clients, which include several Fortune 100 companies, are especially slammed if their supply chains lack a non-China manufacturer."It has reached crisis stage for companies that haven't diversified," he told Business Insider.The base ingredient for penicillin is manufactured largely in China, Ferreira said. China claims 44% of the exports of "Penicillins, derivatives, in bulk, salts," <a href="https://oec.world/en/profile/hs92/294110/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">according to data from the Observatory of Economic Complexity</a>. Nearly half of that goes to India, where it's repackaged into dosage form.In producing goods ranging from nails to snow shovels to medicine, Ferreira said he's forecasting a gap of three to six weeks in companies' supply chains - and executives will have to scramble to find alternatives."Expenses are going to go up, and it will increase the price of consumer products," he said.<h2>Why a shortage could happen</h2>There are a number of factors that can lead to drug shortages, even when a new disease isn't menacing manufacturing plants.In some cases, companies make business choices that led to shortages, such as giving up on unprofitable drugs. Other drug shortages are related to manufacturing problems. There's also been a <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-08-05/teva-s-just-the-start-as-more-generic-drugmakers-poised-to-merge">consolidation of the manufacturers</a> that produce generic drugs, meaning there are fewer companies around to pick up the slack if one runs into trouble.There are currently <a href="https://www.ashp.org/Drug-Shortages/Current-Shortages/Drug-Shortages-List?page=CurrentShortages">202 drugs in shortage in the US</a>, according to a list maintained by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. Bernstein analyst Ronny Gal wrote in a February 26 note that he spoke with supply chain experts who said that should the situation with the coronavirus not improve, we could expect to see shortages start to pop up later in the second quarter of 2020 and early in the third quarter. Because China plays such a key role in making the chemicals used in generic drugs - especially those used in antibiotics and the heart drug heparin - the spread of the coronavirus and the subsequent closures of factories where the chemicals are made could lead to a shortage if the shutdowns persist beyond another month or two. For the most part, big branded pharmaceutical companies like <a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/lilly-statement-on-novel-coronavirus-and-the-reliable-supply-of-the-companys-medicines-301015291.html">Eli Lilly</a> have been quick to say they're not anticipating any shortages. Lilly noted that it doesn't source ingredients for its approved drugs, including insulin, from China. On August 13, Zydus Cadila launched its own version of Remdesivir called Remda in the Indian market. Remdac is priced at ₹2,800 per 100 mg vial, making it the cheapest version of the drug so far. Zydus Cadila said that the drug will be made available across India through the group's strong distribution chain reaching out to government and private hospitals treating COVID-19 patients. In June this year, Zydus had entered into a non-exclusive agreement with Gilead Sciences Inc to manufacture and sell Remdesivir, the investigational drug, which has been issued an emergency use authorisation by the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) to treat patients suffering from severe symptoms of COVID-19. Previously, pharmaceutical giants Cipla and Hetero introduced generic versions Remdesivir — an antiviral drug first used to treat Ebola — to fight coronavirus. The drug was launched in India in July. India’s Health Ministry approved use of the drug to treat mild cases of coronavirus. However, the drug is not recommended to treat those who have several renal impairment, pregnant and lactating women, children below 12 years age. Hetero said it will make its version of Remdesivir — Covifor — available between ₹5,000 to ₹6,000 for a vial. Whereas, Cipla's Cipremi is available for ₹4000 for per 100 mg vial. Cipla’s Cipremi is available for only those patients who are on oxygen support. Apart from Cipla and Hetero Labs, Jubilant Lifesciences and Mylan are also working to manufacture the drug in India. Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, Biocon firm Syngene and has also received voluntary permission from Gilead Sciences to produce Remdesivir in India.
