India is already grappling with a significant <keyword id="22641561" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cancer-burden" source="keywords">cancer burden</keyword>, having recorded about 12 lakh new cancer cases and 9.3 lakh cancer deaths in 2019. Even as the <keyword id="22641562" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="healthcare-struggle" source="keywords">healthcare struggle</keyword> continues, new research has shed light on an emerging crisis. Analysing data from over 23 million US cancer patients diagnosed between 2000 and 2019, the study found that <keyword id="22641557" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cancer-incidence-rates" source="keywords">cancer incidence rates</keyword> have surged among <keyword id="22641558" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="younger-generations" source="keywords">younger generations</keyword> for 17 out of 34 cancer types, such as breast, pancreatic, and gastric cancers. <h2>Younger populations more prone</h2>In particular, people born in 1990 have notably higher rates of pancreatic, kidney, and small intestinal cancers compared to those born in 1955. Women in particular are seeing higher rates of liver cancer. Mortality rates are also on the rise for liver cancer (in women), uterine corpus, gallbladder, testicular, and colorectal cancers. The analysis showed that incidence rates have risen with each successive birth cohort since around 1920 for eight types of cancer. The incidence rate for the 1990 birth cohort is approximately two-to-three times higher than for the 1955 birth cohort for pancreatic, kidney, and small intestinal cancers in both men and women, and for liver cancer in women. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="112062293" title="Cancers in head and neck rising, account for 26% cases in India: Study" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div>Furthermore, incidence rates increased in younger cohorts after a decline in older ones for nine cancers, including oestrogen-receptor-positive breast cancer, uterine corpus cancer, colorectal cancer, non-cardia gastric cancer, gallbladder cancer, ovarian cancer, testicular cancer, anal cancer in men, and Kaposi sarcoma in men. Across various cancer types, the incidence rate in the 1990 birth cohort ranged from 12% higher for ovarian cancer to 169% higher for uterine corpus cancer compared to the birth cohort with the lowest incidence rate. Mortality rates also increased in younger cohorts for liver cancer (female only), uterine corpus, gallbladder, testicular, and colorectal cancers. <h2>Differing socioeconomic factors to blame</h2>The study’s lead author, Dr Hyuna Sung, emphasised that these increases may be linked to unique social, economic, and environmental factors faced by different birth cohorts during their developmental years. However, the precise reasons for these rising rates remain unclear. The report shows an estimated 188.3 million adults aged 30-79 years live with <keyword id="22984" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hypertension" source="Orion">hypertension</keyword> in India. In order to achieve a 50 per cent control rate, 67 million more people with hypertension would need to be effectively treated. Only 37 per cent Indians have the diagnosed condition of high BP, of which 32 per cent are males and 42 per cent females. Of the 35 per cent undertaking treatment, 35 per cent are females, while 25 per cent are males. Currently, only 15 per cent people have their hypertension under control (19 per cent female, 11 per cent males), the report said. Uncontrolled hypertension is known to cause heart attack, stroke and premature death. In fact, the report showed that 52 per cent deaths in the country due to cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack can be attributed to elevated blood pressure. Globally, hypertension affects one in three adults worldwide. About four out of every five people with hypertension are not adequately treated. But if countries can scale up coverage, 76 million deaths could be averted between 2023 and 2050, the report said. "Hypertension can be controlled effectively with simple, low-cost medication regimens, and yet only about one in five people with hypertension have controlled it," said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. Ageing and genetics can increase the risk of having high blood pressure, but modifiable risk factors such as eating a high-salt diet, not being physically active and drinking too much alcohol can also increase the risk of hypertension. Lifestyle changes like eating a healthier diet, quitting tobacco and being more active can help lower blood pressure. Some people may need medicines that can control hypertension effectively and prevent related complications. Prevention, early detection and effective management of hypertension are among the most cost-effective interventions in health care and should be prioritised by countries as part of their national health benefit package offered at a primary care level, the report said. "Hypertension control programmes remain neglected, under-prioritised and vastly underfunded. Strengthening hypertension control must be part of every country's journey towards universal health coverage, based on well-functioning, equitable and resilient health systems, built on a foundation of primary health care," the WHO chief said. India can avert 4.6 mn deaths by 2040 with better hypertension control: WHO

After peaking, the global population is projected to start declining gradually, falling to 10.2 billion people by the end of the century. After this, India's population is projected to decline to 1.5 billion by the end of the century in 2100, but the country will still remain the most populous nation on Earth. Responding to a question by PTI on population projections for India, Senior Population Affairs Officer, Population Division, <keyword id="6355835" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="un" source="Orion">UN</keyword> DESA Clare Menozzi said at a press conference that "India is currently the largest country in the world in terms of population, and it is projected to stay so throughout the century. The population is currently estimated at 1.45 billion, and it's supposed to increase further to 1.69 billion. "It's supposed to peak around the 2060s in size and then it starts to slightly decline. So by the end of the century, India is projected to be around 1.5 billion, but will still the largest country in the world by a large margin." The report said that China's population, currently 1.41 billion in 2024, will fall to 1.21 billion in 2054 and further decline to 633 million by 2100. "It is anticipated that China, the country currently with the world's second-largest population, will likely experience the largest absolute population loss between 2024 and 2054 (204 million)," followed by <keyword id="6355311" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Japan" source="Orion">Japan</keyword> (21 million) and <keyword id="6358826" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Russia" source="Orion">Russia</keyword> (10 million). "Given that you need 2.1 births to maintain the current population without migration, if fertility levels remain at such a low level, even if they come up slightly, any fertility level if it's below two, or especially below 1.8 or below 1.5, you're really getting into low levels of fertility and it produces a long run decline that's quite significant. And that's true for China. It's true for some other countries in this analysis," Wilmoth said. Currently, nearly one-fifth of all countries and areas, including China, Italy, the Republic of Korea and Spain, are experiencing what is sometimes referred to as "ultra-low" fertility, with fewer than 1.4 live births per woman over a lifetime. The report added that the global fertility rate currently stands at 2.25 live births per woman, down from 3.31 births in 1990. "More than half of all countries and areas globally have fertility below the replacement level of 2.1 live births per woman. This is the level required for a population to maintain a constant size in the long run (without migration), with each generation being followed by another of roughly equal size," it said. Pakistan is projected to overtake the US as the third-largest country in the world, with a population of 389 million in 2054. Currently, the US is the third largest country in the world with a population of 345 million and in 2054, it will be the fourth largest with 384 million people. Pakistan will remain the third largest country in the world, with a population of 511 million people in 2100. The report said that the estimated likelihood that the world's population will peak within the current century is very high, with a probability of 80%, a major change in UN projections from a decade ago, when this probability was around 30%. At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic during 2020 and 2021, global life expectancy at birth fell to 70.9 years, down from 72.6 in 2019. The report said that by 2080, persons aged 65 or older will outnumber children under 18. "By the late 2070s, the number of persons at ages 65 years and higher globally is projected to reach 2.2 billion, surpassing the number of children (under age 18). By the mid-2030s, it is projected that there will be 265 million persons aged 80 years or older, more than the number of infants (1 year of age or less)," it said.

So no, this new disease isn't "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/flu-deaths-overestimated-coronavirus-deaths-undercounted-report-2020-5">just another flu</a>."<h2>The flu infects millions of people every year and kills thousands </h2>The number of people killed by influenza each year isn't reported the same way that <keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="covid-19">COVID-19</keyword> deaths are — a discrepancy that can cause confusion when comparing the numbers.The CDC estimates the total number of flu infections in the US via its influenza-surveillance system, which gathers data from state and local partners and projects nationwide totals using infectious-disease models.The <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/burden/how-cdc-estimates.htm#Influenza-Associated-Deaths">estimations</a> are meant to account for flu deaths that occur outside hospitals and other circumstances in which a person dies without getting a flu test. For that reason, the totals can lag by up to two years because it takes CDC researchers a while to collect flu data and look through death certificates. During the 2018-19 flu season, about 35 million people in the US contracted the flu and about 34,000 died, according to the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/burden/2018-2019.html">CDC</a>. In that season, about one out of every 1,000 people who got the flu died.Breaking down the numbers by age range reveals a more complex story. The numbers in the chart above come from the CDC's most <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#demographics">recent June report.</a>In the US, the coronavirus has infected more than 2.3 million people since the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-pandemic-timeline-history-major-events-2020-3">first case was reported on January 22</a>. That's more than any other race, but white people make up a far portion of the US population: around three-quarters. Black Americans also account for <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/more-black-americans-know-someone-who-died-coronavirus-2020-6">17% of frontline employees</a>, despite making up 12% of the US workforce, according to a <a href="https://cepr.net/a-basic-demographic-profile-of-workers-in-frontline-industries/">study from the Center for Economic and Policy Research.</a>In addition, Black people more likely to have preexisting medical conditions that make them vulnerable to severe health outcomes. "Health disparities have always existed for the African-American community," Dr.<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fauci-covid-19-shows-unacceptable-disparities-for-african-americans-2020-4"> Anthony Fauci, the US's leading infectious disease expert, said in an April</a> White House press briefing. The reason the coronavirus hits Black communities hardest, he added, has to do with the prevalence of "underlying medical conditions — the diabetes, the hypertension, the obesity, the asthma." These conditions aren't primarily driven biology or genetics but <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-racial-gap-in-coronavirus-deaths-is-driven-by-racism-2020-6">by structural factors</a> like unemployment, household density, limited access to fresh food, and neighborhoods that lack clean water or have high exposure to allergens and mold."There are also factors that we don't measure, and those include things like structural racism," Adams said. "We have to acknowledge that these things are occurring and that they are occurring to people in many cases because of the color of their skin."<h2>Patients of color face barriers to testing and quality care </h2>The CDC study found that most deaths from February to April were recorded in three areas with significant outbreaks: New York City, New Jersey, and Washington state.Dr. Uché Blackstock, a part-time emergency medicine physician in central Brooklyn, saw the influx of patients in March. Almost as soon as the first cases arrived in New York City, Blackstock said, she began to worry that Black and Hispanic communities would be the ones most heavily impacted.By mid-March, she said, her patients were mostly people of color. Data from <a href="https://covid19tracker.health.ny.gov/views/NYS-COVID19-Tracker/NYSDOHCOVID-19Tracker-Fatalities?%3Aembed=yes&amp;%3Atoolbar=no&amp;%3Atabs=n3Atabs=n">the New York State Department of Health</a> suggests that about 34% of New York City's deceased coronavirus patients were Hispanic and another 28% were Black. Black adults are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/charts-black-americans-gaping-economic-inequality-white-unemployment-earnings-financial-2020-6#black-adults-are-uninsured-at-double-the-rate-of-white-adults-9">uninsured at nearly twice the rate of white adults</a>, according to US Census data. Many Black patients may also be hesitant to seek medical care in the first place."We're seeing that Black patients were less likely to be tested even when they did present to a hospital that had testing or a facility that had testing available," Blackstock said. "We also know that when Black patients do present to the hospital with coronavirus, they usually are sicker."Blackstock said one of her recent coronavirus patients, an elderly Black man, told her he would rather stay home than face discrimination in the emergency room. Another patient, a young Black woman, expressed a similar concern.Blackstock recalled their conversation: "I had so much personal protective equipment on that she looked at me and she said, 'I just want to make sure — are you Black?' I said yes. She said, 'OK, good, because I just want to make sure that I'm listened to."
