Maharashtra Board HSC Class 12 board exam results to be announced at 1pm on July 16

<keyword id="9626040" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Covishield-vaccine">Covishield vaccine</keyword> offers protection from double mutant variant of novel coronavirus, shows a study by the <keyword id="395778" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Centre-for-Cellular-and-Molecular-Biology">Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology</keyword> (CCMB). CCMB Director Rakesh K. Mishra termed this as a very preliminary but encouraging result. "Early results using in vitro neutralisation assay show that both convalescent (prior infection) sera and <keyword id="9617748" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="covishield">Covishield</keyword> vaccinated sera offer protection against the B.1.617 variant, aka double mutant," he said in a tweet. The CCMB's finding came close on the heels of an announcement by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) that Covaxin neutralises multiple variants of SARS-CoV-2 and effectively works against the double mutant strain as well. Covaxin is India's first indigenous Covid vaccine developed by Bharat Biotech in collaboration with ICMR. Covishield has been developed by Oxford-Astrazeneca and is being produced by <keyword id="95879" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Serum-Institute-of-India">Serum Institute of India</keyword>, <keyword id="2094" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pune">Pune</keyword>. Both Covaxin and Covishield are part of India's ongoing Covid vaccination programme. The 'double mutant' (B.1.617) is said to be responsible for the current surge in Covid-19 cases in <keyword id="13126" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maharashtra">Maharashtra</keyword> and other states in India. Scientists earlier feared that vaccines may not offer protection from 'double mutant' as it may escape the immune system. After the CCMB's latest announcement that Covishield too offers protection from 'double mutant', experts say this again underscore the need for people to get vaccinated. CCMB scientist Divya Tej Sowpati tweeted that the convalescent sera is from September 2020, hence most likely of an infection of a variant which is not B.1.617. He also pointed to misinformation and confusion about the circulating SARS-CoV-2 variants in India. Though B.1.617 is called 'double mutant', it is characterised by more than 15 mutations. "It got dubbed the 'double mutant' because of two <keyword id="16898" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Spike">spike</keyword> mutations, L452R and E484Q, which were mutations of concern because of their immune escape properties, and possible high infectivity," wrote Sowpati, who is leading Covid-19 genomics at CCMB. According to him, B.1.618 is not the 'triple mutant'. "Triple Mutant: Again, WRONG name, because it has many more defining mutations. Dubbed 'triple' because in addition to the two mutations, it also has V382L in its Spike. This is a sub-lineage of B.1.617, found mainly in MH samples and also a bit in other states." He also clarified that B.1.618 which was first sampled in West Bengal in late October 2020, has nothing to do with B.1.617, except for a couple of shared variants that all SARS-CoV-2 strains have at this point such as D614G. According to him, the main concern with B.1.618 is that it is found in growing proportions in West Bengal and has the spike del145-146 as well as E484K, both of which are known immune escape mutations. The scientist said that the names of "double" and "triple" mutants are wrong and misleading and that they have no connection to the lineage seen in West Bengal. Covishield vaccine also protects from 'double mutant' strain of COVID-19, says CCMB

I felt betrayed... and furious that instead of working to bring more of Putin's killers to justice, some in the West apparently want to reward him," writes Hurst.</li></ul>When I heard the <keyword id="6355005" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="news">news</keyword> that AstraZeneca was <a href="https://www.astrazeneca.com/content/astraz/media-centre/articles/2020/developing-versatile-immunisation-programmes-against-covid-19-through-potential-vaccine-combinations.html">going to work with Russia's Gamaleya Centre</a> to test combinations of the <keyword id="46985" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Oxford">Oxford</keyword> coronavirus vaccine and the Sputnik V vaccine, I was devastated. I felt betrayed by a prestigious scientific team that was supposed to be winning over the vaccine skeptics. At my last trial appointment a few weeks ago, where I gave a blood sample, I had joked with the medical student who saw me about the Sputnik vaccine. Neither of us trusted it, and we wanted to develop a genuine one. I could not have imagined that AstraZeneca would participate in Vladimir Putin's project. I have been in the Oxford trial, a joint project with AstraZeneca to develop a COVID-19 vaccine, since early June. I've had two doses of either the vaccine or the placebo. I was very enthusiastic to help develop a safe and effective vaccine, gave several interviews to UK media outlets about my participation in the trial, and spoke positively about the vaccine on Times Radio and LBC radio. But in response to the collaboration with the Russians, I have withdrawn from the trial. <h2>AstraZeneca's announcement undermines its efforts to develop trust in its new vaccine. </h2>I am a journalist specializing in writing about Russia. Lately I've been writing quite a bit about the dubious rollout of the Sputnik V vaccine. Vladimir Putin's regulators triumphantly approved use of the vaccine in Russia in August, before sufficient trial data had been produced. It was entirely a propaganda show to prove that Russia was ahead of the rest of the world. The <a href="https://www.bbc.com/russian/features-55183978">BBC Russian Service</a> recently published an article saying that Russian scientists don't think the state is providing enough data about the vaccine. With questionable speed, Russia has even moved forward with a second coronavirus vaccine, <a href="https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2020/10/14/russia-approves-2nd-coronavirus-vaccine-putin-a71752">EpiVacCorona</a>, and is also working on <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/health-coronavirus-russia-animal-vaccine/russia-trials-covid-19-vaccine-for-domestic-animals-including-mink-idUSKBN28O1HU">a vaccine to protect animals</a> against the novel coronavirus. Pro-Kremlin reporter Dmitri Smirnov commented wryly on <a href="https://twitter.com/dimsmirnov175/status/1337074538799050755">Twitter</a> on December 10 that "Operation Save the Vaccinations" was underway as officials scrambled to withdraw their advice that Russians would have to abstain from drinking alcohol for 56 days before and after the two doses of their vaccinations. This has now been reduced to <a href="https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2020/12/15/coronavirus-in-russia-the-latest-news-dec-15-a69117">"three days after each injection."</a>It isn't clear to anyone whether the advice <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russians-told-not-to-drink-for-months-after-covid-vaccine-2020-12">to avoid drinking</a> is medically sound. Russians were also told that they shouldn't take hot baths after their vaccinations, which <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/07/world/europe/russia-coronavirus-vaccine.html">didn't inspire confidence</a> either. I consider this a prepared excuse the Kremlin could use if the vaccine didn't work as hoped. <h2>Putin is also using the vaccines in his international diplomacy, urging other countries to place orders for them. </h2>Argentinian President Alberto Fernandez <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/health-coronavirus-russia-argentina-vacc/update-1-argentina-to-start-covid-19-vaccinations-before-year-end-with-russias-sputnik-v-idUSL1N2IQ1S1">has said he will be the first person</a> in his country to receive the Sputnik vaccination to demonstrate its safety. And now, AstraZeneca's involvement lends Western legitimacy to an otherwise marginalized option. Many of my friends and colleagues in the UK are afraid that there will be so much trade disruption when the Brexit transition period ends on January 1 that the government will accept any vaccine it can get its hands on. I certainly am.When I called the Oxford trial hotline to inform the team that I would be withdrawing from the trial, the doctor who answered told me that the Sputnik vaccine would not be approved by the UK's regulator, the MHRA. If that's the case, then why is AstraZeneca involved at all? I think they just see an opportunity to save money by perhaps giving people the Oxford vaccine after a dose of Sputnik. But I don't really know what they're up to. Did they not consider the bad publicity that would result, or the way they would be playing into Putin's hands? Russia's forces were tied to shooting down <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-48691488">flight MH17 with a Buk missile in July 2014</a>, killing 298 people of many nationalities, and some of the perpetrators are <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-51725417">currently on trial</a> in The Hague in absentia. A new <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2020/12/14/europe/russia-navalny-agents-bellingcat-ward/index.html">joint report by Bellingcat and CNN</a> has identified the FSB agents who tailed Navalny for years and poisoned him. I am furious that instead of working to bring more of Putin's killers to justice, some in the West apparently want to reward him.Putin <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/europe/eight-months-after-russia-annexed-crimea-from-ukraine-a-complicated-transition/2014/11/27/d42bcf82-69b3-11e4-bafd-6598192a448d_story.html?itid=lk_inline_manual_2">annexed Crimea</a> and is tied to the <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-ukraine-crisis-casualties/ukraine-calls-for-more-peace-talks-after-four-die-in-eastern-donbass-idUSKCN1UW15D">killing thousands of Ukrainians in Donbass</a>. He recently prompted amendments to the Russian constitution to allow himself to seek two more terms as president and stay in <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-russia-putin-constitution/constitutional-changes-are-the-right-thing-for-russia-putin-idUSKBN2460OD">power until 2036</a> if reelected. I knew that I would only be making a small contribution as one of thousands of participants in the Oxford vaccine trial, but every person makes a difference. Similarly, my withdrawal from the trial may do very little to prevent Western companies from making the mistake time and time again to trust Putin, but I cannot be associated in any way with such collaboration. Follow along here for live results. <h2>Who are the candidates?</h2>Consumer protection lawyer and economic justice activist <a href="https://www.dispatch.com/news/20191217/beatty-gets-challenge-as-candidates-line-up-for-central-ohio-congressional-seats">Morgan Harper</a> is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/florida-arizona-ohio-illinois-primaries-live-results-vote-counts-2020-3">mounting a nationally-watched primary challenge</a> to four-term congresswoman Rep. Joyce Beatty in Ohio's 3rd district, a safe Democratic seat which includes almost all of the Columbus metro area in Central Ohio. Harper, who is running a grassroots campaign focused on ensuring economic security and better opportunities for marginalized communities, has argued that in her view, Beatty and other Democratic incumbents haven't done enough to help working people in the districts they represent. "I'm not unique in running this type of primary challenge," <a href="https://www.elle.com/culture/career-politics/a30797257/morgan-harper-ohio-third-district-congress-interview/">Harper told Elle magazine in February.</a> "There's hundreds of people running these types of races all over the country...more participation is better, from my perspective. Dan Lipinski</a>, one of the most conservative Democrats in the House, on March 17. But in Texas' 28th district near the US-Mexico border, progressive insurgent Jessica Cisneros <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/texas-28th-district-dem-primary-cuellar-vs-cisneros-live-results-2020-3">failed to dispatch Rep. Henry Cuellar</a>, the only other anti-abortion House Democrat besides Lipinski, on Super Tuesday. Beatty currently <a href="https://ballotpedia.org/Morgan_Harper#Endorsements">enjoys the backing</a> of the local Democratic Party in Franklin County, the Ohio chapter of powerful Service Employees International Union, and Planned Parenthood Action, the latter of which endorsed both Cisneros and Newman. Harper's campaign <a href="https://ballotpedia.org/Morgan_Harper#Endorsements">has been endorsed</a> by Justice Democrats, which focuses on electing progressive primary challengers in safe Democratic seats, the Working Families Party, and the Sunrise Movement. In addition to being the incumbent, Beatty also has a significant financial advantage over Harper. According to the most recent filings with the Federal Election Commission, Beatty <a href="https://www.fec.gov/data/candidate/H2OH03125/?cycle=2020&amp;election_full=truetrue">has over $969,000 in cash-on-hand</a> compared to <a href="https://www.fec.gov/data/candidate/H0OH03103/?cycle=2020&amp;election_full=truetrue">just $68,000 for Harper. </a><h4><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ohio-presidential-congressional-primaries-live-results-vote-counts-2020-4">Follow along with the results of the Democratic presidential primary and other races in Ohio here.</a></h4><h2>Ohio held its election almost entirely by mail due to the coronavirus</h2>Ohio was originally set to hold in-person voting for its presidential and congressional primaries on March 17, along with Arizona, Illinois, and Florida.But as confirmed cases of the virus in the state sharply increased, Gov. Mike DeWine made a last-minute effort to delay the election until June. But after being blocked by a judge, he and health commissioner Dr. Amy Acton <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ohio-postpones-march-17-primary-until-june-cancels-in-person-voting-2020-3">declared a public health emergency</a> to shut down polling places the day before the election. The Ohio legislature then moved <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2020/03/25/ohio-vote-by-mail-primary-election-149012">to extend mail-in voting</a> for the primaries through April 28 as well as offering very limited options in-person options on Tuesday for voters with disabilities who need additional assistance. Notably, the legislature did not authorize the Secretary of State's office to mail every voter an absentee ballot, or even an absentee request form. Instead, the office sent postcards to every voter outlining the procedures by which they can vote, requiring people to either print out a form from the website, or call a local election office to get a request form sent to them. The circumstances surrounding the election have led to considerably low voter turnout. <a href="https://www.sos.state.oh.us/media-center/press-releases/2020/2020-04-27/">According to April 27 figures</a> released by the Secretary of State's office, 1.97 million, or 26%, of Ohio's 7.7 million registered voters requested absentee ballots, with a little over 1.45 million voters returning their ballots by Monday. In <a href="https://theintercept.com/2020/04/16/ohio-primary-election-vote-mail-coronavirus/">an interview with The Intercept</a>, Harper denounced the complicated procedures required to even get a ballot request, in addition to requiring voters to pay for the postage on the request form, as a modern-day poll tax."It's going to be a barrier for people always but particularly during a global health pandemic," she said of the election. "We're advising people to not really leave their homes."Her campaign also took the step of personally delivering ballot request forms to thousands of voters in the district. While Biden is virtually assured to win the state's presidential primary, election officials will still accept ballots received through May 8 as long as they are postmarked by April 27, meaning some closer races may not be decided until then.
