One should not take them lightly, and immediate referral is required. <ol><li>The sudden onset of breathlessness, especially at rest: This may be a signal of pulmonary embolism, a severe condition due to clot formation.</li></ol>This is a severe condition in which one or more arteries in the lungs become blocked by a blood clot. It is often caused by blood clots that travel from the legs, or rarely, other parts of the body (deep vein thrombosis or DVT). Recovered patients may experience chest pain while breathing, light-headedness or low oxygen in the body, fast heart rate or palpitations, fast breathing, shortness of breath, and dry cough. Other signs and symptoms to watch out for are <ul><li>Fever.</li><li>Leg pain or swelling, or both, usually in the calf, caused by a deep vein thrombosis.</li><li>Clammy or discoloured skin (cyanosis).</li></ul>One must immediately consult their physician. 2. However, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (<a href="https://news.mit.edu/2020/covid-19-cough-cellphone-detection-1029">MIT</a>) may have found a way around that using artificial intelligence (AI). MIT’s new AI model can detect who may be carrying the virus, even without any discernible physical symptoms, just by hearing the way a person coughs. The salient differences between the cough of a healthy person and that of one who may be unhealthy is not discernible to the human ear but can be picked up by AI. “Things we easily derive from fluent speech, AI can pick up simply from coughs, including things like the person’s gender, mother tongue, or even emotional state. There’s in fact sentiment embedded in how you cough,” explained co-author Brian Subirana. The long term plan is to make this accessible on a large scale by incorporating the model into a user friendly app. If it receives the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval, MIT hopes it can be a free, convenient, and non-invasive screening tool for coronavirus. MIT’s AI model detects asymptomatic COVID-19 patients with 100% accuracy The study, published in the IEEE Journal of Engineering in Medicine and Biology, used forced-cough recording, submitted by people voluntarily submitted through web browsers, smartphones, and laptops. Using this information, the AI model was trained using tens of thousands of coughs and spoken words. At the end of the experiment, it accurately identified 98.5% of coughs from people who were confirmed to have COVID-19. And detected those who didn’t have any symptoms but tested positive with 100% accuracy. An AI-model backed by four algorithms The AI model is a combination of three machine learning (ML) algorithms or neural networks. ResNet 50 can discriminate between sounds that are associated with different degrees of vocal cord strength. The second ML algorithm was trained to distinguish between different emotional states evident in speech. While certain tones may indicate frustration, others indicate happiness. The final and third neural network is a database of coughs that can discern changes in lung and respiratory performance. All three of these models were combined and one last algorithm was overlaid to filter all analysis and detect muscular degradation. The results showed that together — vocal cord strength, sentiment, lung and respiratory performance, and muscular degradation — were effective biomarkers for diagnosing the disease. “The sounds of talking and coughing are both influenced by the vocal cords and surrounding organs. This means that when you talk, part of your talking is like coughing and vice versa,” explained Subirana. This research was supported, in part, by Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited. That's the most common symptom among patients who get the new <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> that has swept across China. A <a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2761044">recent study of nearly 140 patients</a> at the Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University identified a typical pattern of symptoms associated with the virus, which causes a disease known as COVID-19. Around 99% of the patients developed a high temperature, while more than half experienced fatigue and a dry cough. About a third also experienced muscle pain and difficulty breathing. Research from the Chinese Center for Disease Control suggests that <a href="http://weekly.chinacdc.cn/en/article/id/e53946e2-c6c4-41e9-9a9b-fea8db1a8f51">around 80% of coronavirus cases are mild</a>. Around 15% of patients have gotten severe cases, and 5% have become critically ill. Here's how symptoms progress among typical patients: <ul><li>Day 1: Patients run a fever. They may also experience fatigue, muscle pain, and a dry cough. A small minority of them may have had diarrhea or nausea one to two days before.</li><li>Day 5: Patients may have difficulty breathing - especially if they are older or have a preexisting health condition.</li><li>Day 7: This is how long it takes, on average, before patients are admitted to a hospital, according to the Wuhan University study. </li><li>Day 8: At this point, patients with severe cases (15%, according to the Chinese CDC) <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-coronavirus-diagnosis-ct-scans-lungs-2020-2">develop acute respiratory distress syndrome</a> (ARDS), an illness that occurs when fluid builds up the lungs. <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(20)30211-7/fulltext">ARDS is often fatal</a>. </li><li>Day 10: If patients have worsening symptoms, this is the time in the disease's progression when they're most likely to be admitted to the ICU. These patients probably have more abdominal pain and appetite loss than patients with milder cases. Only a small fraction die: The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-deadly-is-novel-wuhan-coronavirus-2020-2">current fatality rate</a> hovers around 2%. </li><li>Day 17: On average, people who recover from the virus are discharged from the hospital after two-and-a-half weeks. </li></ul>However, the first symptoms might not come right after a person has been infected. Lauren Ancel Meyers, an epidemiologist at the University of Texas at Austin, told Business Insider that a typical patient may be infected without showing symptoms for five or more days. Once symptoms do appear, they can be similar to pneumonia. But Paras Lakhani, a radiologist at Thomas Jefferson University, told Business Insider that the way COVID-19 can worsen over time distinguishes it from pneumonia. "Pneumonia usually doesn't rapidly progress," Lakhani said. "Typically, most hospitals will treat with antibiotics and patients will stabilize and then start to get better." Coronavirus patients, however, can get worse even after they receive treatment such as fluids or steroids. A day-by-day breakdown of coronavirus symptoms shows how the disease, COVID-19, goes from bad to worse

Growth of foreign tourist arrivals to India slowed down to 2.7 per cent in January-October period of 2019 in tune with the global trend, according to the Economic Survey 2019-20.
 The Indian tourism sector, which is a major engine of growth, had witnessed a strong performance from 2015 to 2017, with high growth in foreign tourist arrivals, the survey tabled in Parliament on Friday said.
 "However, foreign tourist arrivals growth (year-on year) has decelerated since then to 5.2 per cent in 2018 and 2.7 per cent in January-October 2019," it said.
 This trend, however, is not unique to India, as the growth in international tourist arrivals globally also slowed from 7.1 per cent in 2017 to 5.4 per cent in 2018, it added.
 As a result, the survey said growth in foreign exchange earnings from tourism sector has slowed in 2018 and 2019 after registering strong growth until 2017.
 "Foreign exchange earnings totalled USD 24 billion in January-October 2019, with a growth of 2 per cent," it said.
 In 2018, India ranked 22nd in the world in terms of international tourist arrivals, improving from the 26th position in 2017.
 "India now accounts for 1.24 per cent of world's international tourist arrivals and 5 per cent of Asia &amp; Pacific's international tourist arrivals," it said.
 In terms of foreign exchange earnings from tourism, India ranks 13th in the world and 7th in Asia &amp; Pacific.
 The survey said visitors from the top 10 countries -- Bangladesh, USA, UK, Sri Lanka, Canada, Australia, Malaysia, China, Germany and Russia -- accounted for 65 per cent of the total foreign tourist arrivals in India.
 Among foreign tourists, 62.4 per cent visited India for leisure, holiday and recreation, 16.3 per cent for business purposes, and 13.5 per cent was Indian diaspora, it added.
 With the e-Visa scheme available for 169 countries, the survey said foreign tourist arrivals to India on e-visas increased from 4.45 lakh in 2015 to 23.69 lakh in 2018, and stood at 21.75 lakh in January-October 2019, recording nearly 21 per cent year-on-year growth from the previous year. A team of researchers in Australia now have a map for how the human immune system responds to a Covid-19 infection by studying some of the first people who were diagnosed with the disease. With a map to guide them, scientists can predict the course of the virus. They were able to identify four types of immune cells, according to the study published in <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-020-0819-2">Nature Medicine</a>. Being able to predict when a person will recover from coronavirus A 47-year old woman from Wuhan who recovered within 14 days had specific cells in her bloodstream, which corresponded to the same type of cells in influenza patients before they recover. “Three days after the patient was admitted, we saw large populations of several immune cells, which are often a tell-tale sign of recovery during seasonal influenza infection, so we predicted that the patient would recover in three days, which is what happened,” aid <a href="https://about.unimelb.edu.au/newsroom/news/2020/march/covid-19-the-immune-system-can-fight-back">Oanh Nguyen</a>, co-author of the study. The next step for the scientists is to figure out why the immune system response was weaker in other patients. Other regulators, like the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/post/preview?post_id=5fc77839935fea2f8c42753b&amp;mode=desktopktop" target="_blank" rel="noopener">US Food and Drug Administration</a> and the European Medicines Agency are expected to make decisions by the end of the year.Despite the UK's quicker action, MHRA Chief Executive Dr. June Raine said in a televised press briefing on Monday that the "same stringent standards" have been met, and "no corners had been cut".To come to the decision, the agency weighed up the vaccine's risks versus its benefits, known as a "risk-benefit analysis". During this process, the MHRA scrutinized the vaccine's safety, efficacy (how well it works), and the quality of the vaccine itself, including how it's manufactured. Raine said that the speedy decision-making stems from MHRA teams working in parallel, and analyzing data as it came in, known as a "rolling review". The detail of how and why the MHRA reached the decision remains unknown, making scrutiny and comparisons with other regulators challenging.The MHRA told Business Insider that it plans to produce regulatory papers, but the timeline for this is unclear. And, Pfizer told reporters on Monday that it couldn't say when trial data will be published in a peer-reviewed journal. In the meantime, unanswered questions are starting to pile up. Is it safe in the long-run?</h2>The short answer is we don't know. Pfizer's vaccine is new, and so it hasn't been tested for long enough for scientists to judge whether it causes side effects long-term. We do know more about potential short-term side effects. The side effects included in the official UK <a href="https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/940565/Information_for_Healthcare_Professionals_on_Pfizer_BioNTech_COVID-19_vaccine.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">leaflet for </a><a href="https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/940565/Information_for_Healthcare_Professionals_on_Pfizer_BioNTech_COVID-19_vaccine.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">health professionals </a>are based on adverse effects reported by the volunteers. In total there were about 20,000 people that received the shot in Pfizer's key clinical trial. Side effects they reported include:<ul><li>Pain at the injection site</li><li>Fatigue </li><li>Headache </li><li>Muscle ache </li><li>Chills </li><li>Joint pains </li><li>Fever </li></ul>"Most of the side-effects are usually mild and last for a day or so," said chair of the Commission on Human Medicine Expert Working Group Professor Sir Munir Pirmohamed on Monday. The Human Medicine Expert Working Group has advised the MHRA in their decision making.Pfizer said there were "no safety concerns" reported by an independent data monitoring committee.However, decision-making was based on a "risk-benefit" analysis, and more details on how the UK regulator arrived at its decision won't be revealed until the regulator papers are made public. There's clearly a huge potential benefit of the vaccine because it protects people against a disease that's taken roughly 1.4 million lives globally. Does that mean they've accepted a big risk?Pirmohamed said that the MHRA is "proactive" in monitoring the long-term safety of the shot. Part of this will include the yellow card system, a reporting system where anyone, including the public, can report adverse events. The MHRA also plans to launch a separate system where people can sign up and report side effects, Pirmohamed added.However, it's unclear how many people will sign up to this voluntary system, and there's the potential to miss out on a lot of data if people choose not to.Rain reiterated that public safety remains at the forefront of regulator's mind."Safety is our watchword and it will always continue to be so," she said.<h2>2. How long does it protect against COVID-19?</h2>Protection from the vaccine kicks in by seven days after the second dose, though people should have some protection 12 days after the first dose, Pirmohamed said, However, because scientists are learning about the disease at the same time they're developing vaccines, it's unclear how long immunity lasts for, and how often people will need to get vaccinated. People might need to get <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-booster-shots-after-initial-vaccination-2020-11">booster shots</a>.<h2>3. Does it stop people from spreading the disease?</h2>Pfizer's large late-stage study wasn't designed to test whether the shot stops people from spreading coronavirus if they don't have symptoms. Instead, the drugmaker's priority was to test whether it prevents the disease, said Pfizer Vaccines' Vice President Ralf Rene Reinert.Reinert said that "research is underway" to answer this question, and it involves testing people for COVID-19 every day.<h2>4. Should it be given to pregnant people?</h2>Pregnant people were excluded from Pfizer's trials. Therefore, there's no data regarding whether the shot is safe or effective in pregnant people right now. The UK says the shot shouldn't be given to pregnant people, or to people who are breastfeeding.However, early stage studies investigating whether the vaccine's harmful to unborn babies are ongoing.This means that if it's proven safe and works, Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine could be used to protect pregnant people in the future.<h2>5. Can children be given the shot?</h2>At the moment, the MHRA has authorized the vaccine to be given to adults over 16 years old. Pfizer tested the shot in its large late-stage trial in healthy individuals over 18 years old at first, but then expanded it to include those over 12 years old, according to the company.However, Reinert said that Pfizer is planning additional clinical trials to make the vaccine available for children going forwards. "We are not at the end of development, we are in the middle."
