44 test positive for coronavirus in Nagpur, tally crosses 200 on 6th May

A welcome relief for the state health authorities, Maharashtra has seven out of 35 districts which are free of COVID-19 infections -- with not a single case reported till April 15, officials said. They are: <keyword id="6389436" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="bhandara">Bhandara</keyword>, <keyword id="53901" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="chandrapur">Chandrapur</keyword>, Gadchiroli, Parbhani, Wardha, Nanded, Nandurbar. There's Solapur district, which has no case so far, though the Solapur city has reported one case, as per the latest government data. These untainted districts are designated as the 'Green Zone' in the state and now all-out efforts are underway by the district and state authorities to ensure they remain free of the corona scourge. Surprisingly, most of these districts are practically encircled by other districts, which have been affected by COVID-19, some of them badly, like Nagpur -- which is bordered by three clean districts, Bhandara, Chandrapur and Wardha. The pilgrim centre of Nanded is surrounded by Latur, Yavatmal, Hingoli which have had Covid-19 cases, and <keyword id="9057909" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="unstained-parbhani">unstained Parbhani</keyword> has other surrounding districts hit by the virus. The tribal district of Nandurbar on the northern corner bordering Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh is flanked by only one affected district to the south -- Dhule. Similarly, the unscarred Gadchiroli and Bhandara districts share borders with Gondia, among the least affected with just one case so far. The state's 'Orange Zone' comprises around 16 districts with up to 15 cases so far. These districts are: Gondia, Washim, Buldhana, Yavatmal, Amravati, Akola, Hingoli, Latur, Beed, Jalna, <keyword id="6390441" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="osmanabad">Osmanabad</keyword>, Jalgaon, Satara, Kolhapur, Sindhudurg and Ratnagiri. However, Gondia may change colour soon after the Union Health Ministry announced on Tuesday that it was among 25 districts in the country where no new Covid-19 cases have been reported since the lockdown. There's the 'Red Zone' or those districts with a significant number of Covid-19 cases, or those like Mumbai and Pune which are considered as 'hotspots'. The 11 districts falling in the 'Red Zone' are: Mumbai, Mumbai Suburban District, Pune, Thane, Nagpur, Palghar, Raigad, Nashik, Aurangabad, Sangli and Ahmednagar. At least three districts could have escaped a colour tag, but some persons who had attended the <keyword id="274939" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tablighi-Jamaat">Tablighi Jamaat</keyword> event in Delhi were found positive there. A 19-year-old girl was allegedly gangraped by five persons in a forest area in Nagpur, Maharashtra. She had gone to Khairi Village along with her boyfriend and their bike broke down. The accused came to the spot and took the woman to an isolated area and sexually assaulted her. The woman later managed to escape with her boyfriend. She filed a complaint after four days and all five accused have been arrested. Peter Mukerjea released from jail After spending more than four years behind the bars, former media baron Peter Mukerjea was released from the Arthur Road Jail on Friday. He was arrested on November 25, 2015 by the CBI in relation to the murder of his wife Indrani Mukerjea’s daughter, Sheena Bora. The Bombay High Court granted Mukerjea bail in February but stayed the order for six weeks so the Central Bureau of Investigation could file an appeal. The stay ended on Thursday and the CBI did not file an appeal in the Supreme Court. Rana Kapoor sent to judicial custody The founder of the now-troubled Yes Bank Rana Kapoor was sent to judicial custody by the Mumbai High Court in connection with the Dewan Housing Finance Ltd (DHFL) scam, on Friday. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) claims that Yes Bank gave loans of ₹30,000 crore out of which loans worth ₹20,000 crore became bad, during Kapoor’s tenure. The ED accuses that Kapoor and his family received ₹4,300 crore as kickbacks for granting these loans. Kapoor has been sent to judicial custody to Taloja jail in Navi Mumbai, till April 2. The CBI is also in the process of seeking his custody, so he might end up behind the bars for longer. Tamil actor, writer and director Visu passes away Popular Tamil actor and director M.R. Viswanathan, fondly known as Visu, passed away in Chennai on Sunday. The 75-year-old actor had a cardiac arrest, following which he was rushed to a hospital. Visu’s daughter, Lavanya said, “He passed away shortly after. The funeral will be held on Monday.” He was reportedly suffering from kidney-related ailments for the past couple of years. His mortal remains have been brought to his residence in Thoraipakkam. The final rites will take place at Besant Nagar crematorium at 4PM today.  All upcoming local bodies and civic elections in the state have been postponed by three months, the shutdown of academic institutions in urban centres has been extended to cover all educational institutions even in rural areas. Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray announced a special ₹45 crore fund to tackle the pandemic to be distributed among the Divisional Commissioners at Konkan and Pune, while ₹5 crore each will be disbursed to Nagpur, Amravati, Aurangabad and Nashik. The money would be utilised to provide various facilities at the quarantine centres including food, television sets, indoor games like carroms, etc. The district authorities have been authorised to make emergency purchases of ventilators or required medical equipment. Thackeray appealed that those who have been advised home quarantine must voluntarily refrain from stepping out in public to prevent any risk to others.

Maharashtra on Thursday saw a new record high of 11,514 Covid-19 cases, besides 316 deaths, the third-highest fatality figure so far, health officials said.</li></ul> The new daily tally surpassed the previous high of 11,147 (July 30), even as Thane became the third district after Mumbai and Pune to surpass the one lakh case mark. With the fresh fatalities, the state's death toll shot up to 16,792, while the total cases rose to 479,779 - both highest in the country. According to Thursday's figures, there was one death roughly every 5 minutes and a staggering 480 new cases every hour. The state's recovery rate increased marginally from 65.25 per cent to 65.94 per cent on Thursday, while the current mortality rate stood stable at 3.50 per cent. The Health Department said that of the total cases till date, 146,305 are active. A total of 10,854 recovered patients have returned home, taking the total number of discharged patients to 316,375. Of Thursday's deaths, Pune notched the highest, at 62, followed by Mumbai's 57, and Thane's 56 deaths. As Mumbai deaths again crossed the 50-plus range, the city's toll rose to 6,648 and the number of cases increased by 910 to 120,150. There were also 18 deaths in Nagpur, 15 in Solapur, 13 each in Nashik, Jalgaon and Kolhapur, 10 in Palghar, seven each in Aurangabad, Parbhani, and Amravati, six in Latur, five each in Raigad, Ahmednagar, Sangli, and Nanded, three in Buldhana, two each in Dhule, Satara, and Yavatmal, and one each in Nandurbar, Ratnagiri, and Akola. Of the total 100 fatalities on Thursday, <keyword id="6358070" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="mumbai">Mumbai</keyword> notched 67 deaths — taking the city's death toll to 3,311, while the number of Covid-19 positive patients went up by 1,288 cases to touch 62,875 now. The situation in Dharavi — Asia's biggest slum — continues to improve with 28 new cases, taking the total to 2,134 cases and the number of fatalities remaining unchanged at 77. Besides Mumbai's 67 deaths, there were 31 fatalities in Thane and one each in Palghar and Nagpur. On the positive side, a total of 1,672 fully cured patients returned home on Thursday, taking the number of those discharged to 60,838 now, relatively higher than the 53,901 active cases. In another heartening development, the health department said that in the past 100 days, the spread of Covid-19 has been arrested in the state with reducing weekly average growth in cases and the increase in the doubling rate of patients. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has directed all labs to submit their Covid-19 test reports directly to the BMC and asked all hospitals to report Corona deaths within 48 hours to ensure better coordination among various departments, said an official. Meanwhile, the number of people sent to home-quarantine decreased from Wednesday's 582,699 to 581,650 now, while those in institutional quarantine decreased from 27,582 on Wednesday to 26,740 now. In another relief for the patients, there are as many as 92,141 beds currently available in 2,203 institutions for Covid-19 related quarantine in the state. New Delhi, Apr 26 () Undeterred by the fear of death, 57-year-old Asif Khan has kept his nose to the grindstone to dig out coal so that the country's power plants can keep running at a time when people have been forced to stay indoors due to the COVID-19 crisis. With the country confronted with an unprecedented situation, Khan, who works in the Kamptee open cast mine of Coal India arm WCL, said it was time to serve the nation "the way a soldier fearlessly keeps his life at stake to guard his country against the enemies." Khan considers the COVID-19 crisis as a "once in a lifetime" opportunity to serve the country by reporting to work amid all the risks. "If me and many like me don't go to work, who would produce coal," he asked. "I don't want that a situation arises when in the absence of coal, the country's power houses come to a standstill, and in the absence of electricity, the hospitals which are treating corona virus patients collapse," Khan told over phone. There are many more mine workers like Khan who have braved the risks associated with the pandemic to fulfil their professional duties. Shiv Kumar Yadav is one such worker. He has been at the frontline since the beginning of crisis, producing coal so that Coal India Ltd (CIL) is able to meet its output target and keep electricity generators well-supplied during summers when the fuel demand shoots up drastically. Yadav was haunted by the fear of COVID-19 when the countrywide lockdown began. "My son said 'papa please don't go. God forbid, if you get infected so would we'," Yadav reminisces. However, Yadav says he did not succumb to the pressure of his family, adding that a sense of duty and urge to serve the nation makes him and his colleagues report to work even in these trying times. Another coal miner Ranjeet Singh said, "We all are putting our best so that Coal India does not die." Gopal Singh owes a lot to the Coal India management, particularly his immediate boss Diwakar Gokhale, who is Area General Manager (Nagpur Area) of Western Coalfields Ltd (WCL), for his "never-say-die" spirit. To motivate the workers, the company undertakes various initiatives. Recently, under the leadership of Gokhale, the workers were given floral tributes and applauded heartily when they came out of the mine after completing their shift. A special team of four-five members was flown from Nagpur to the mines, some 40 kms away, for the initiative. All social distancing norms were followed, Gokhale said, adding that miners have to be motivated in such challenging times. The company has also taken several steps to ensure safety of its workers. Beside providing masks, foot-operated wash basins have been installed at vulnerable places in all the mines of the Nagpur area, with the city reporting many coronavirus cases. Nagpur, Mar 28 () Western Coalfields Ltd (WCL), a subsidiary of Coal India Ltd, has registered highest ever single day coal production of 4.29 lakh tonnes on March 27 amid the countrywide lockdown to contain coronavirus.Employees, currently 42,000, are working 24x7 in both underground &amp; opencast coal mines to produce and despatch enough coal to its linked power plants, so that there should be no disruption in electricity supply in the country at present necessary to combat the menace of COVID-19, WCL said in a press release.Coal Mining activity and its transportation has been declared as Essential Service during the lockdown due to COVID-19 outbreak."In line with other Essential Services and without affecting their morale under the present crisis, WCL with its 42,000 employees has registered highest ever single day coal production of 4.29 lakh tonnes on March 27 2020. The last highest production registered by the company was 4.02 lakh tonnes on March 30, 2019," the release said.WCL has already broke its earlier record on March 20 by surpassing 53.18 million tonnes produced during 2018-19.The company is now heading to surpass its annual target of 56 MT for 2019-20.WCL also surpassed its annual target of 2018-19 by registering a growth of over 15 per cent, release said.WCL operates 55 mines in 10 areas spread over Maharashtra and MP." In order to provide safe work place to its employees during the threat of COVID19, all the areas are working hard to make available all precautionary measures required for safety of workers. Around 25,000 masks have been provided to the employees and further 10,000 to be distributed shortly," the company said.WCL supplies 80 per cent of its production to power plants located in Central, Western and Southern India."WCL has been able to maintain sufficient coal stock at the above plants and continues to do so by dispatching more than 1.5 lakh tonnes of coal per day by Rail &amp; Road mode during the present crisis also so that nation continues to be energised," it said.It has also made provision of 75 beds in its 10 different area hospitals in both Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh for use of quarantine of suspected corona cases.Doctors, Nurses &amp; Para-Medical Staffs have been put on alert to deal any eventuality.
