<ul><li>The Indian government yesterday (March 31) allowed 47 private labs across the country to conduct tests. </li><li>The <keyword id="6364396" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ICMR">ICMR</keyword> has allowed 10 private labs to conduct the tests in Maharashtra, eight each in Delhi and Telangana, five in Haryana, four each in Tamil Nadu and Gujarat, two each in Kerala and West Bengal and one each in UP and Odisha.</li></ul>India so far has conducted around 47,951 tests for COVID-19 out of which 4,562 tests were done at ICMR network labs on Tuesday, said ICMR officials. Addressing the media here, R. Ganga Ketkar of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said, " The ICMR network's capacity utilisation is around 30%. We have increased the number of labs. 113 have been made functional and 47 more private labs approved." Of this, 113 labs are operational and the remaining 9 are in the process. According to the Union Health Ministry on Wednesday, the Covid-19 toll has risen to 38 and number of cases to 1466. The infections reportedly happened after two Covid-19 patients and two suspected cases were shifted here from the Kasturba Hospital a fortnight ago. While the two patients were kept in the isolation ward, the two suspect cases were kept with other patients in the ICU from where the infection may have spread. Last week, two nurses serving in the ICU tested positive, and then the infections spread quickly, affecting nearly 29 including the doctors. The BMC has taken the swabs of another 270 staffers and patients at the hospital for testing, and pending the outcome, the hospital has been declared a containment zone. Since such a large number of cases have come from a single location, the BMC has ordered a probe to ascertain if Covid-19 protocols were adhered to or not while dealing with the two patients and two suspects admitted there last month. This Sunday, eight people died in Mumbai of Covid-19 and what’s even more appalling is that neither of them had a travel history. This surge took the number of deaths in the city to 30, giving it a dubious distinction of the city with the most deaths due to the epidemic. Another, oldest, an 80-year-old man, was admitted to a private hospital with complaints of weakness and epilepsy who died due to respiratory failure.
