<ul><li>As of Sunday (April 5), Maharashtra recorded a total of 45 COVID-19 deaths, including several women. As many as 30 of the deaths were from Mumbai. </li><li>The other victims here fall in the age group of 52-64 and had various other ailments besides COVID-19, according to the BMC </li><li>A total of 3,078 teams have been set up which have conducted a door-to-door survey of around 10 lakh people in major cities; this includes 519 teams in Mumbai.</li></ul>The BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared the Wockhardt Hospital near Mumbai Central a containment zone after at least 29 staff including 3 doctors and 26 nurses were found Covid-19 positive last week, officials said. The infections reportedly happened after two Covid-19 patients and two suspected cases were shifted here from the Kasturba Hospital a fortnight ago. While the two patients were kept in the isolation ward, the two suspect cases were kept with other patients in the ICU from where the infection may have spread. Last week, two nurses serving in the ICU tested positive, and then the infections spread quickly, affecting nearly 29 including the doctors. The BMC has taken the swabs of another 270 staffers and patients at the hospital for testing, and pending the outcome, the hospital has been declared a containment zone. Since such a large number of cases have come from a single location, the BMC has ordered a probe to ascertain if Covid-19 protocols were adhered to or not while dealing with the two patients and two suspects admitted there last month. This Sunday, eight people died in Mumbai of Covid-19 and what’s even more appalling is that neither of them had a travel history. This surge took the number of deaths in the city to 30, giving it a dubious distinction of the city with the most deaths due to the epidemic. However, the state Maharashtra accounts for a total of 45 COVID-19 deaths. A total of 13 persons, including several women, died in Maharashtra on Sunday (April 5) due to Covid-19. They were all in the age bracket of 52-80 and suffered from various other ailments besides COVID-19, according to the BMC. Among the recent coronavirus victims is a 70-year-old woman and seven men, most of them suffering from other illnesses and tested positive for COVID-19, said the BMC. The woman was admitted to KEM Hospital on April 4 for chest pain and breathlessness and succumbed to respiratory failure. Another, oldest, an 80-year-old man, was admitted to a private hospital with complaints of weakness and epilepsy who died due to respiratory failure. A 77-year old man who was admitted to the Kasturba Hospital on March 29 for fever, cough and breathlessness, died on Saturday due to respiratory failure. Third coronavirus case found in Asia’s largest slum Dharavi A 35-year-old doctor who has a clinic on the main road in Dharavi area of Mumbai tested positive for coronavirus on Thursday, a civic official said. This is a third COVID-19 case where the patient has a connection with Dharavi, considered to be Asia’s biggest slum with a high population density. An official of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said a doctor who had a clinic on Dharavi’s main road and who was also attached as a surgeon to a prominent private hospital tested positive for the virus. “The building where he lives will be quarantined, and all high-risk contacts will be traced,” the BMC official said. This is part of a precautionary protocol adopted by the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), an autonomous institute under the Union ministry of health and family welfare. The protocol, drawn up following a direction from the state government on Thursday, will be in force until the COVID-19 pandemic is over, NEIGRIHMS Director DM Thappa said. “Only critically ill non-COVID19 patients certified by the state health authorities concerned can seek treatment at the NEIGRIHMS, and only one attendant will be allowed to accompany the patient. However, such a person will have to be quarantined for 14 days as per government directives,” Thappa said. Likewise, the NSE Nifty nosedives 1,135.20 points or 12.98 per cent to settle at 7,610.25. In the first hour of Monday's trade, benchmark indices cracked over 10 per cent, triggering a 45-minute trading freeze as coronavirus-led lockdowns across the world stoked fears of a massive global recession. Equities spiralled further lower after trading resumed around 1100 hours. Global stocks too roiled after nations across the world announced lockdowns in an effort to mitigate the spread of Covid-19 pandemic, spiking fears of a mammoth global recession. The rupee plummeted 90 paise against the US dollar to 76.10 during the day. Axis Bank was the top loser in the Sensex pack, tanking over 28 per cent, followed by Bajaj Finance, IndusInd Bank, ICICI Bank, Maruti and L&amp;T. Indian benchmark indices followed the carnage in global equities as sentiments dampened further after global governments announced extensive lockdowns to curb the spread of Covid-19, trader said.
