Each company has previously said it takes privacy and security seriously.In its <a target="_blank" href="https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security/introduction">introduction to Windows security</a>, last updated in July, Microsoft said that its Windows 11 operating system was developed with a "Zero Trust security model based on the premise that no person or device anywhere can have access until safety and integrity is proven."In its July 2024 <a target="_blank" href="https://cloud.google.com/docs/security/overview/whitepaper">security overview,</a> Google said, "Security drives our organizational structure, culture, training priorities, and hiring processes" and is "prioritized in the way we handle customer data, our account controls, our compliance audits, and our certifications."Apple's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://support.apple.com/guide/security/intro-to-apple-platform-security-seccd5016d31/web">platform security overview</a>, updated in May, stated that security is designed "into the core of its platforms." The company also stated in the overview that it believes "privacy is a fundamental human right" that influences the development of its products and services.<h2 id="c2fbb9fa-5790-4c7e-8fb1-cc664499ed68">Opt-In versus Opt-Out privacy policies</h2>Two other cybersecurity experts told Business Insider that each of the big names has poured billions of dollars into their data privacy protections — and each tries to persuade users theirs are the best.They said each company's approach to security means different things for consumers."Google and Microsoft and so many other companies, you have to opt out of having data collected," Chris Hauk, a consumer privacy advocate at the data security advocacy group Pixel Privacy, told BI. "Whereas, Apple, with a lot of it, you have to opt in."Dinesh Besiahgari, a front-end engineer at Amazon Web Services, told BI that Google, Apple, and Microsoft each employ a version of a "<a target="_blank" href="https://bootcamp.cvn.columbia.edu/blog/what-is-a-sandbox/">sandbox</a>" security feature that restricts apps from accessing each other's data to prevent breaches from spreading through a device."Ideally, there should be something similar in all major companies," Besiahgari said, referring to the sandbox-style infrastructure. However, he added, the security from any operating system is only as good as its latest update, saying: "Every patch that you have will keep you more secure."<h2 id="358187cc-d5bf-4999-934d-bcf3ce59a95e">No one knows when their data will be at risk</h2>As for what you can do in your everyday life to make your cyber life more secure, Manning said to prioritize simple steps you'll consistently use, like turning on a VPN or using a privacy browser. Not everyone will choose to revert to using a pen and paper like she has, Manning acknowledges.Whatever steps you decide to take to protect your data privacy, make them a habit because, as Manning said, "it's hard to determine when you're at risk; nobody knows.""One of the things that I've encountered from my work as a security consultant is that some of my clients tend to be normal people who did something and ended up having their life thrown completely upside down, unexpectedly and randomly," Manning said.But, she added, it's important not to fall into the "doomerism" mindset of believing it's "pointless" to fight back and protect your privacy. Halpin agreed, saying it will take tremendous effort to change how people think about data privacy on the internet and how companies build their products to ensure user security — but it'll be worth the effort."Maybe no one will want Nym, but it's still worth building it to show there's another way," Halpin said of the new VPN. "And if enough people want it, then we can open up larger spaces for new kinds of internet infrastructure, which can help solve some of these larger, civilizational issues that we're facing."

This substantial uptick highlights the growing reliance on credit cards for transactions, reflecting broader economic trends and <keyword id="20740758" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="consumer-confidence" source="keywords">consumer confidence</keyword>. The report also highlighted a considerable increase in <keyword id="21118324" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="transaction-volumes" source="keywords">transaction volumes</keyword>, which surged by 39% year-on-year, reaching a total of 38.4 crore transactions in July 2024. This increase in the number of transactions underscores the widespread adoption and usage of credit cards as a preferred <keyword id="20632158" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="payment-method" source="keywords">payment method</keyword> among Indian consumers. In terms of transaction value, HDFC Bank again led the way, with a total spend of Rs 44,369 crore through its credit cards in July. ICICI Bank and SBI followed with Rs 34,566 crore and Rs 26,878 crore, respectively. The report said "In Jul'24, transaction volumes was led by cards issued by HDFC Bank (9.9 crore) followed by ICICI Bank (7.1 crore) and SBI (6.3 crore)". They would just rather <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-household-deposits-savings-luxury-consumer-demand-slowdown-economy-outlook-2024-7">save their money</a> during this time of economic uncertainty. They also prefer <a target="_blank" rel="" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-economy-lopsided-recovery-consumer-retail-spending-industrial-output-property-2024-5">spending their on experiences</a> like travel and buying stuff — including luxury items — when they are <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rich-chinese-flock-to-japan-in-search-of-luxury-bargains-2024-7">on vacation in Japan,</a> where they can get great discounts.So, even though LVMH's business in China is lower than in past years, "it doesn't mean that the global business we do with mainlanders is down," LVMH chief financial officer Jean-Jacques Guiony during the company's second-quarter earnings call on Tuesday.LVMH does not break out its sales for China separately. The company's revenue for Asia in the first half of the year, including China but excluding Japan, declined 13% from a year ago, to 12.4 billion euros, or $13.4 billion. That made up 30% of LVMH's total revenue. In contrast, LVMH's Japan revenue surged 27% over the same period, to 3.8 billion euros.But the Chinese market is still growing, and given that Chinese tourists drive a lot of sales, LVMH is focused on engaging them at home — where they may well return to buying in force one day."The response from customers to marketing stimulus is still quite important in China," said Guiony on the earnings call. "So we will certainly allocate a significant amount of our marketing budgets there."LVMH does not break down its marketing cost by region. They shop in Japan or elsewhere," Guiony said.He called the trend "extremely violent" for LVMH because it is pressuring margins. Operating profit for the first half of the year came in at 10.7 billion euros, with an operating margin of 25.6% — down from 27.4% a year ago."We really have a big shift of business from Asia into Japan," Guiony said "Bear in mind that Fukuoka, for instance, is only two hours by boat from the coast of China."Japan has become the "most attractive shopping destination for Asian customers," Guiony added.The fluctuations in the yen make it challenging for LVMH to price its products in Japan. It's unwilling to hike prices in this important market — Japan accounted for 9% of LVMH's revenue — since the yen may go back up at any time.Since sales in Japan are so driven by currency fluctuations and tourist spending, it looks like LVMH just has to wait for its Chinese customers to get back to shopping at home.Guiony doesn't seem to know when that will happen."Analyzing the Chinese customer is not the easiest thing in the world and we have a little bit of a hard time doing that really from a pure macroeconomic viewpoint," he said.

New Delhi: 78 per cent of consumers now prefer to do most of their banking digitally through <keyword id="19915384" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mobile-apps" source="keywords">mobile apps</keyword> or websites, according to the Alkami report. This shift is part of a broader trend towards <keyword id="21227659" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cashless-transactions" source="keywords">cashless transactions</keyword> and <keyword id="21012835" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="contactless-payments" source="keywords">contactless payments</keyword>, which have become the default for many, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the report, nearly 80 per cent of financial institutions have seen an increase in cashless transactions over the past two years. This change has been accelerated by the pandemic, with many consumers opting for digital payments to avoid handling cash. About 60 per cent of these institutions noted that the volume of cashless transactions has surged by more than 20 per cent. Cashless payments aren't a new concept--personal checks and credit cards have been around for decades. However, today's digital payments, whether made through a smartphone, laptop, or tablet, are quickly becoming the standard. The convenience and safety of these transactions, especially in a post-pandemic world, have made them more popular than ever. Allison Cerra, Chief Marketing Officer at Alkami Technology, said, "The banking leaders of the future will be those that can harness data for the best use, gain a holistic view of their relationships, and meet the rapidly changing needs of digital consumers." Instead, they are self-serving from home or wherever they are. They're moving money through our digital banking platform," he said. Interestingly, even though fewer people are visiting bank branches in person, their overall engagement with banks has increased. Thanks to the ease of mobile and <keyword id="19998466" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="online-banking" source="keywords">online banking</keyword>, customers are now interacting with their banks more frequently, often on a daily basis. While cashless transactions are on the rise, the adoption of cryptocurrency is growing more slowly. Around 21 per cent of financial institutions reported that their customers are asking for Bitcoin products and services. Although this is still a relatively small percentage, 35 per cent of banks believe that offering cryptocurrency options could give them a competitive edge. Banks are also feeling the heat from fintech companies like PayPal, Stripe, and Venmo. Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase, has called these fintechs "enormous competitive threats" to traditional banking. The popularity of fintechs has only increased during the pandemic, with many consumers turning to these platforms for their financial needs. Despite the competition, some banks are partnering with fintechs to stay relevant. According to the report, 50 per cent of banks and 40 per cent of credit unions have teamed up with fintech companies in the past three years to enhance their digital offerings. Looking ahead, many experts believe that the future of banking will revolve around personalised experiences. However, only about a quarter of financial institutions are currently using hyperpersonalization to gain a competitive advantage. There's a growing opportunity for banks to leverage personalised recommendations and offers to better serve their customers. Data is also playing a crucial role in this digital transformation. Most banks are now using data analysis to improve customer experiences, guide decision-making, and reduce development time and costs. By unlocking the potential of customer data, banks can better anticipate their clients' needs and offer tailored solutions. The Reserve Bank of India (<keyword id="19899808" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="RBI" source="keywords">RBI</keyword>) has started its three-day monetary policy committee (MPC) meeting in Mumbai on Tuesday. The meeting will conclude on Thursday, when the RBI will announce its decisions on the <keyword id="20094323" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="repo-rate" source="keywords">repo rate</keyword> and other matters. The repo rate, which has been maintained at 6.5 per cent since it was last increased in February 2023, is widely expected by experts to remain unchanged for the ninth consecutive bi-monthly policy review. Experts highlight that <keyword id="19895000" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="inflation" source="keywords">inflation</keyword> in India remains above the RBI's target range, making it unlikely that the central bank will implement policy cuts until inflation reaches the target of 4 per cent. However, the expert added that the RBI may consider rate cuts in the October meeting. Banking expert Ashutosh Khajuria commented: "Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) may continue to hold the policy signalling Repo rate and wait for <keyword id="19979707" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Consumer-Price-Inflation" source="keywords">Consumer Price Inflation</keyword> to decisively fall below 4 per cent, the target rate. For the present, the continuation of the current stance is widely expected. MPC in India may change the stance and rate action by the beginning of the second half of the year in their October meeting at the earliest." The experts also noted that while <keyword id="20196112" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="core-inflation" source="keywords">core inflation</keyword> has been contained and commodity prices, particularly metals, have dropped by 15-20 per cent from their 2024 peak, food inflation remains a concern and needs to be closely monitored to ensure stability in overall CPI numbers. The Managing Director of a major bank, who preferred not to be named, told ANI: "During the last policy meeting we could see some voting in favour of a <keyword id="19920203" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rate-cut" source="keywords">rate cut</keyword>. At the same time, we could see The Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das on July 11 said it is too early to talk on the interest rate cut due to the uncertain economic environment and inflation remaining close to five per cent. Considering both, our expectation is that the rate cut cycle may start from the next meeting and no change in <keyword id="19950650" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="interest-rates" source="keywords">interest rates</keyword> this time." RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das had also emphasised in the last policy briefing that food inflation is still a concern and that the regulator is not in a hurry to make a decision on rate cuts. A recent report by the State Bank of India (SBI) also noted that Consumer Price Inflation in India is expected to remain around 5 per cent for the financial year 2024-25, except for the months of September and October.
