Indian companies across multiple sectors have reported disappointing results in the second quarter of fiscal year 2025, notes a new JM Financials report. Consequently, their poor performance has triggered stock price corrections for affected companies. The brunt of this weaker than expected earnings was largely borne by consumer centric sectors like FMCG (fast moving consumer goods), retail, and auto, which slacked largely due to dampened urban demand. For instance, India's largest automaker, Maruti Suzuki, reported a 5% YoY decline in its total domestic passenger vehicle wholesales, largely on the back of pent-up inventory. Similarly, Honda reported a staggering 23% YoY dip in its total sales during October 2024. A recent report by Bernstein noted that around 48% of the companies listed on the NSE100 index missed their earnings estimate for Q2FY25, the highest since March 2020. Most companies have mentioned deteriorated domestic demand, urban slowing, macroeconomic risk, and margin pressures as the main reasons behind the dip. "The quarter's earnings have made investors nervous," noted the JM Financials report. The challenging environment stems from multiple factors: softening consumer demand, rising input costs, and companies' limited ability to increase prices. Moreover, this is not limited to just one quarter. Companies have been reporting weak, single-digit earnings growth for the last six consecutive quarters. Data from India Data Hub also suggests that corporate profits of listed companies plunged by as much as 3.4% during the quarter ended September 30, 2024. This is in stark contrast to the year-ago period, where they had shot up by over 40% The oil and gas sector had a difficult quarter, with refiners hit by weak margins and city gas distributors struggling with higher input costs. Financial institutions showed mixed results. While government-owned banks reported strong numbers, microfinance institutions and some private lenders faced massive difficulties with their unsecured loans. Most notable amongst this was the case of IndusInd Bank, which saw its net profits dip by 40% amidst burgeoning provisions, which climbed 87% to Rs 1,820 crore in Q2, as against Rs 974 crore reported in the year-ago period. <h2>Markets head southwards</h2>The selling trend by FPIs has dragged down the major Indian indices, the Nifty 50 and Sensex, both of which have dropped by around 8% since the beginning of this selling spree in October. According to National Securities Depository Ltd. (NSDL) data, FPIs offloaded equities worth a significant Rs 19,994 crore in just the first five trading sessions of November last week. The impact is clearly visible on Indian stock markets. Data suggests that while every sector in October closed the month in red, auto, oil and gas, and consumer durables were the most badly hit, each declining by as much as 10% during the month. Another indicator underlining the inherent weakness of the market was that the month saw only 242 stocks hit their 52-week high, significantly below the usual monthly average of 310.

The month of December has seen the category in lending-verse amass outstanding balances of approximately ₹11 lakh crore, as per the Consumer Finance Overview by InCred Finance. Within the segment, the most rapid growth has been seen in small ticket personal loans (STPL), defined as loans under ₹25,000, witnessing a fourfold increase in volume over the past two years. Meanwhile, conventional personal loans, characterised by larger amounts and stricter underwriting criteria, have doubled in volume over the same period. It is to be noteworthy that in November, earlier this year, RBI increased the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/finance/news/rbi-tightens-norms-on-personal-loans-for-banks-nbfcs/articleshow/105269235.cms">risk weightage</a> for unsecured personal loans, and the effect is expected to be seen gradually. Retail lending trumps corporate lending Interestingly, retail lending, directed at individuals rather than businesses, now holds the foremost position and exhibits the most rapid growth within the credit landscape. Retail lending stands at approximately ₹89 lakh crores (around $1.1 trillion), constituting 46% of the overall credit in the economy. The report says that comparatively, corporate lending amounts to ₹74 lakh crores (about $0.9 trillion), securing the second largest segment. Retail balances are growing at a rate of 22% annually from a substantial base, outpacing the 17% growth of overall credit balances and the 14% growth of corporate balances. <keyword id="6387037" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="credit-cards" source="Orion">Credit cards</keyword> remain fastest growing retail lending category, despite decreased acceptance rates The fastest growing sector in retail lending remains credit cards. Despite a more than 25% decrease in acceptance rates and an industry-wide tightening of credit policies for new-to-credit customers, credit card balances have consistently increased. This appears to be a preemptive risk management step by lenders, as overall credit performance in the industry remains stable or even shows signs of improvement. Retail trumps corporate lending as small-ticket loans see fourfold jump in past two years

The fourth edition of the CRIF High Mark report noted a slowdown from the 17.4% growth recorded in March 2023, largely due to a deceleration in the home <keyword id="6362287" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="loans" source="Orion">loans</keyword> segment, which accounts for 40.1% of the overall consumption loan portfolio by value. The home loans portfolio saw growth slowing down to 7.9 % YoY in FY24, from the 23 % expansion seen in FY23. This was mainly due to muted growth in "originations", which increased by 9.2 % in FY'24 compared to 18.2 % in the previous fiscal year. Origination refers to the process by which a lender creates or initiates a new loan or credit, including evaluating, processing, and approving a borrower's application. The report finds a shift toward higher <keyword id="6871589" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ticket-size" source="Orion">ticket size</keyword>s, with a growing preference for loans above Rs 35 lakh, although the average ticket size (ATS) rose by 32% from Rs 20.1 lakh in FY20 to Rs 26.5 lakh in FY24. In contrast, the personal loans segment maintained strong momentum, growing by 26% YoY in FY24, despite recent regulatory reforms. Larger ticket loans of Rs 10 lakh and above increased their share in originations by value, while loans under Rs 1 lakh continued to dominate in volume. Banks led in value-based originations, whereas non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) remained dominant in volume. Two-wheeler loans experienced a 34% YoY growth in FY24, up from 30% in FY23, fueled by a shift to higher ticket-size loans. However, the overall volume of originations grew at a slower pace of 13% in FY24 compared to 32% in FY23. <keyword id="35527" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="auto-loans" source="Orion">Auto loans</keyword>, on the other hand, grew by 20% YoY in FY24, compared to 22% in FY23. Consumer durable loans posted a robust growth of 34% YoY in FY24, up from 26% expansion in the previous fiscal. This growth was driven by a shift to larger ticket sizes, although origination volumes grew by only 8.5% in FY24, compared to 38.2% in FY23. The MSME lending segment displayed mixed results, with individual MSME loans growing faster than entity MSMEs. The individual MSME portfolio increased by 29% YoY in FY24, accelerating from 15% in FY23, while entity MSME loans grew by just 6.6 % YoY, a sharp slowdown from 17.2 % in the previous year. Microfinance lending also saw strong growth, with the portfolio rising by 27% YoY in FY24, compared to 21% in FY23. "The resilience of the Indian credit market is evident in the strong performance across various lending categories and the stability in delinquencies. Home loans remain dominant, but the growth in personal loans, two-wheeler loans, and the rebound of NBFCs highlight significant shifts in the lending landscape," CRIF High Mark MD Sanjeet Dawar said.

Indians are taking more personal loans, buying consumer goods on credit, says report

While consumption, MSME and microfinance loans’ originations volume grew in double digits between FY22 and FY23, corporate loan growth was at a mere 2.4%, as per <keyword id="19994500" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="crif" source="keywords">CRIF</keyword> High Mark’s report on ‘How India Lends’. Investments by companies have remained in the slow lane even in FY24, according to a report by <keyword id="19920717" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bank-of-baroda" source="keywords">Bank of Baroda</keyword>. In the first three quarters of FY24, investments to the tune of ₹10.80 lakh crore were announced. Most of these announcements were dominated by airlines, power, chemicals and machinery. Bank of Baroda in a report said that 2023’s investment announcements, most of which might not materialize, are at the lowest since 2018. That however excludes 2020, when Covid-19 induced lockdown was in-effect. “Data on new investment announcements do indicate that industry in general is still in a wait and watch mode. One factor holding back investment could be excess capacity in several sectors. <keyword id="19899808" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rbi" source="keywords">RBI</keyword> data for June shows the average at 73.6%,” said economists at Bank of Baroda. Apart from this, uncertainty due to the elections could have played a role in companies being tight fisted. “The third factor could be high interest rates and the expectation of repo rate cuts next year in the second quarter of the fiscal,” the economists added. The consumption loan boom On the other hand, consumption loans that include home loans, auto loans, personal loans etc, grew the fastest at 37.7% in FY23. Within consumption, personal loans saw the sharpes growth, followed by consumer durable loans. Public and private sector banks give a large chunk of home loans. “There is a 22% increase in average ticket size (ATS) from ₹20.2 lakh in FY20 to ₹24.7 lakh in FY23. There has been a shift in originations by both value and volume seen from ticket size ₹5-35 lakh to ₹35-75 lakh,” said CRIF. Housing finance companies and PSU banks lead ticket size bands under ₹75L, while private banks lead the over ₹75 lakh ticket size loan market. In the quarter ending September 2022, for the very first time, those between the ages of 18-30 accounted for the largest proportion of inquiries – a measure of consumers applying for new credit cards, said the report named Credit Market Indicator (<keyword id="271053" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="cmi" source="Orion">CMI</keyword>). “The fact that 43% of retail credit inquiries were made by consumers in the 18-30 year-old age group, compared to 38% in the same quarter in 2021, and 33% in the year before, indicates a major milestone in the evolution of India’s credit market, which now has stronger participation of younger consumers in the credit ecosystem,” says <keyword id="2793" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="rajesh-kumar" source="Orion">Rajesh Kumar</keyword>, managing director and CEO of TransUnion <keyword id="6380215" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CIBIL" source="Orion">CIBIL</keyword>. Kumar added that increased access to credit is directly related to quality of life and financial empowerment of India’s youth – who he says are drivers of the country’s economic engine. In the second quarter of FY23, credit demand remained robust, with a corresponding increase in originations as lenders continued to provide credit opportunities for millions of consumers across India, the report said. Most of this is fuelled by consumption-led lending. Positive lender sentiment and consistent improvement in credit performance year-over-year also helped. Where is the credit? The most in-demand credit products during the quarter were personal loans, followed by credit cards. Inquiry volumes for personal loans increased by 109% YoY, while inquiry volumes for credit cards increased by 102% YoY. A continued feature of the retail credit evolution has been increased credit penetration. Between September 2019 and September 2022, credit penetration has improved across age groups. Consumers in the 18-30 years age group who availed at least one credit product increased from 14% to 19%. In the 31-45 year age group, it increased from 26% to 35%. And among the 46+ year cohort, it rose from 23% to 32% The number of inquiries emanating from rural areas has increased by one percentage point each year, from 20% in September 2020 to 22% of all inquiries in September 2022. Inquiries from urban and semi-urban areas have remained consistent at 21% and 26% respectively over the last three years. Analysis of the latest CMI also shows a marked improvement in borrower profiles, with nearly one-third (32%) of consumers holding a prime credit score, up four percentage points from the same period in 2021. Over the same time, 38% of near-prime consumers improved their status to prime in the September quarter. Amazon, Flipkart and Myntra sales – all unaffected by low consumer sentiment

A bench headed by Justice <keyword id="247734" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ashok-Bhushan">Ashok Bhushan</keyword> said the COVID-19 pandemic has not only caused serious threat to the health of the people but has also cast its shadow on the <keyword id="47276" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Economic-growth">economic growth</keyword> of the country as well as other countries in the entire world. The eight categories of loans are MSME (Micro, Small &amp; Medium Enterprises), Education, Housing, Consumer durable, Credit card, Automobile, Personal and Consumption. "Due to lockdown imposed by <keyword id="1576501" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-Government-of-India">the Government of India</keyword> in exercise of powers under the Disaster Management Act, 2005, there can be no denial that most of the businesses including private sector as well as public sector has been adversely affected. "For several months, large number of industries were not allowed to function and exemptions were granted only to few of the industries to run and carry on its activities, which were found essential and necessary in the fact situation," the bench, also comprising Justices R S Reddy and M R Shah, said. Although, gradually, due to Unlock- 1, 2 and 3, the industries and other business activities have been restored and the economy of the country is on track, although at a slow pace, it said. The apex court noted that moratorium period as granted by the Reserve Bank of India have continued from March 3 to August 31 for the period of six months. It noted the submission of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta that measures taken by the Centre in exercise of jurisdiction under the Disaster Management Act, 2005 to mitigate the hardships and miseries of few sectors. "As noted above, senior advocate Rajiv Dutta, counsel for the petitioner has expressed its satisfaction on the measures taken by the Government of India redressing grievances of the petitioner to the extent as noted above. "We dispose of the present writ petition with directions to the respondents to ensure that all steps be taken to implement the decision... so that benefit as contemplated by the Government of India percolates to those for whom financial benefits have been envisaged and extended," it said. The RBI had on March 27 issued the circular which allowed lending institutions to grant a moratorium on payment of instalments of term loans falling due between March 1, 2020, and May 31, 2020, due to the pandemic. Later, the moratorium was extended till August 31 this year. The pleas pertained to charging of interest on interest by banks on EMIs which have not been paid by borrowers after availing the loan moratorium scheme of RBI during March 1 to August 31. The top court's judgement came on a PIL filed by Agra resident Gajendra Sharma seeking directions to declare the notification dated March 27, 2020 issued by Reserve Bank of India as ultra vires to the extent it charges interest on the loan amount during the moratorium period. SC directs govt to implement its decision to forego interest on eight categories of loans

(Eds: Adding details) Mumbai, Jul 11 () RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das on Saturday warned of higher bad loans as a direct fallout of the pandemic, and said the medium-term outlook for the economy remains uncertain, with supply chains and demand yet to be fully restored. A protracted lockdown, which began on March 25 and continued in various phases albeit with significant easing of restrictions since early May, has resulted in the severe disruption of industrial production and consumer spending, with GDP growth forecast to contract sharply in April-June, pushing Indian economic growth for the 2020-21 into a deep recession. "The economic impact of the pandemic - due to lock-down and anticipated post lock-down compression in economic growth - may result in higher non-performing assets and capital erosion of banks," Das said at the 7th SBI Banking and Economics Conclave. A recapitalisation plan for public sector banks (PSBs) and private banks (PVBs) has, therefore, become necessary, he said, adding despite the substantial impact of pandemic on daily lives, the financial system of the country, including all the payment systems and financial markets, are functioning without any hindrance. "The Indian economy has started showing signs of getting back to normalcy in response to the staggered easing of restrictions. It is, however, still uncertain when supply chains will be restored fully; how long will it take for demand conditions to normalise; and what kind of durable effects the pandemic will leave behind on our potential growth," he said. Das said the 2008 global financial crisis and the current one show that such economic shocks have "fatter tails" than generally believed, and that the country's financial system should have larger capital buffers. The RBI, he said, has been guided by the age-old wisdom that ascribes the role of Lender of Last Resort (LOLR) to the central bank. It has cut interest rates by 115 basis points in response to the pandemic, taking the total policy rate reduction to 250 basis points since February 2019, he said. Also, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has provided liquidity of Rs 9.57 lakh crore, eased some bad loan provisioning norms and allowed loan moratoriums for retail customers. Das said targeted and comprehensive reform measures already announced by the government should help support the country's potential growth. Also, special emphasis is being placed on the assessment of business model, governance and assurance functions (compliance, risk management and internal audit functions), as these have been the areas of heightened supervisory concern. "RBI has taken a number of important historic measures to protect the financial system and support the real economy in the current crisis. "While the eventual success of our policy responses will be known only after some time, they appear to have worked so far," he said. Possibly in a vastly different post-COVID global environment, reallocation of factors of production within the economy and innovative ways of expanding economic activity could lead to some rebalancing and emergence of new growth drivers, Das added. The central bank, he said, strives to maintain the balance between preserving financial stability, maintaining banking system soundness and sustaining economic activity. "Post containment of COVID-19, a very careful trajectory has to be followed in orderly unwinding of counter-cyclical regulatory measures," he said. The financial sector should return to normal functioning without relying on the regulatory relaxations as the new norm, he added. The conventional and unconventional monetary policy and liquidity measures by the RBI have been aimed at restoring market confidence, alleviating liquidity stress, easing financial conditions, unfreezing credit markets and augmenting the flow of financial resources to those in need for productive purposes, he said. "The broader objective was to mitigate risks to the growth outlook while preserving financial stability," he added. Das said despite the substantial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the country's financial system are functioning without any hindrance. "RBI is making continuous assessment of the changing trajectory of financial stability risks and upgrading its own supervisory framework to ensure that financial stability is preserved," he said. Banks and financial intermediaries have to be ever vigilant and substantially upgrade their capabilities with respect to governance, assurance functions and risk culture, Das noted. The governor also said banks will have to improve their governance, sharpen their risk management and raise capital on an anticipatory basis instead of waiting for a situation to arise. When a natural calamity happens the repayment behaviour of certain borrowers gets impacted and that does affect the NPA position of banks, he said."In such a situation, it has become a lot more important that the banks improve governance, sharpen risk management skills and raise capital on an anticipatory basis instead of waiting for a situation to arise. Proactively, it is necessary that both public and private sector banks to build up adequate capital buffers," Das said.
