ecosystem control — right from content to music to movies as well as having all the different apps within that ecosystem. Their thinking is very far ahead in all sectors. In this case, Jio along with Retail is one complex piece of a puzzle,” he said. Tencent is a big player in gaming but Jio is still planning to get started with Akash Ambani’s announcement of Jio Console in the 2019 AGM of the company. While making big investments in technology, Ambani is also going big on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/mukesh-ambani-next-goal-seems-to-be-the-retail-king-of-india/articleshow/76953716.cms">physical retail</a>, where Tencent is not a player, though Alibaba is. Refining and petrochemicals continues to contribute over 60% to the consolidated revenue of RIL⁠. Yet, Ambani has already disclosed his plan to spin out Jio and list it as a separate company. And when that happens, the sheer expanse of the company’s interest areas and their individual potential may be benchmarked to the value of similar businesses under the Alibaba and Tencent banners. India may be a smaller market compared to China, where Alibaba and Tencent are major players, but that also leaves a huge growth potential on the table for Jio. If Alibaba and Tencent are rolled into one, it may look a lot like Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio ⁠— only much smaller for now

Jio will be taking on Airtel’s V-Fiber Broadband, Hathaway — in which it has 51.3% stake — and other players in the broadband space. Jio’s divided its subscription plan into <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/reliance-jiofiber-plan-details-speeds-data-limits-and-freebies/articleshow/70996747.cms">six tiers</a> — bronze, silver, gold, diamond, platinum and titanium. In comparison, Airtel’s plans are definitely pricier but their data limits are higher — which means heavy users can browse more at higher speeds without worrying about fair usage policies or FUPs. FUPs basically are limits for data downloads, crossing which speeds of the said plans will fall drastically. This is true even with unlimited plans, where operators believe that users tend to leave devices open and unattended when a plan is offered without limits. Higher speeds but less data Jio’s bronze, silver and gold subscription plans come bundled with free voice calls, free TV calling and conferencing services. These plans also include a free subscription to the Jio Console — Jio’s multiplayer game streaming service that’s making its debut with the promise of zero latency. The welcome offer — valid for a limited period of time and subject to annual subscription only — is only offering a free three-month subscription to JioCinema and JioSaavn for the bronze plan users. Even the silver plan is limited to a three month subscription but will include other streaming platforms, yet to be disclosed. Airtel’s V-Fiber plans, on the other hand, come bundled with free subscriptions to Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Zee5 and Airtel Xstream as well as unlimited free calling within India. Speeds that Airtel and Hathaway don’t offer Diamond, platinum and titanium users will get additional perks like Jio’s ‘First Day First Show’ feature, which will allow them to watch movies on the same day as theatrical release. Jio’s also introducing a virtual reality platform for these users which will provide a ‘theatre-like’ experience without leaving the couch, according to the company. But this a VR device has to be purchased by consumers separately. So much so, before the launch of Reliance Jio today, his competitor Bharti Airtel launched a new set of plans to brace against the onslaught. At Reliance Industries’ <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/reliance-jio-fired-up-as-mukesh-ambani-joins-hands-with-satya-nadellas-microsoft-to-challenge-jeff-bezos-in-india/articleshow/70641754.cms">annual general meeting</a>, Ambani promised a minimum speed of 100 mbps for Jio Fiber. He also said that his plans will start at ₹700 per month. Hathaway isn’t going to be left behind. The company’s new ‘Freedom Plan’ offers 100 mbps at ₹699 per month with a data cap of 1 TB. One way is by introducing a plan that’s offering half the speed at half the price. For users who feel like they don’t really need 100 mbps can opt for a 50 mbps plan at ₹399 without limits on data consumption. Hathaway’s also offering 150 mbps plans at ₹1,499 per month with a data cap of 1TB. The only catch is that Hathaway requires a minimum three-month subscription in other for users to sign up for its services. Airtel’s plans are pricier but allows you to carry forward data Airtel also has a broadband plan for ₹799 a month but it offers speeds of 40 mbps with data capped at 100GB. Airtel’s V-Fiber broadband is offering another 200GB of additional data for a span of six months within that plan — but it’s a mere fraction of what Jio and Hathaway have up for grabs. Airtel could have a leg up on Jio, depending on the conditions of plans, since it allows users to carry forward any unused data. If you’re looking for speed, Airtel’s 100 mbps plan costs ₹1099 per month with a data cap of 500GB and an additional 300GB for six months. The devil could be in the terms and conditions Jio hasn’t completely disclosed the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/what-are-the-rules-to-apply-for-jio-fiber/articleshow/70891242.cms">details</a> of its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/how-to-get-jio-fiber-broadband-service/articleshow/70821752.cms">broadband plans</a> and the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/how-reliance-jio-gigafiber-broadband-will-work/articleshow/70821794.cms">many conditions</a> that it could come with. It will have to rival Airtel’s 300 mbps plan pegged at ₹1599 per month that’s offering 600 GB and an addition 1TB for six months. Ambani did disclose that Jio Fiber’s plans, while starting at ₹700, will have options that extend to up to ₹10,000 per month. But, Jio also intends to lock in users with annual plans, and this offer might only be available for a ‘limited’ period. To connect to the services, Jio users will need to make security deposit of ₹4,500 and obtain the ONT device (GigaHub Home Gateway) provided by the company. Those looking to switch internet services should also study the ability of their provider to offer top-notch service, which is essential for broadband services. At the end of the day, it would be bold to replace television with broadband as it all hinges on speed and quality. Airtel and Hathway’s broadband plans are gearing up for Jio Fiber’s salvo

Lianna Brinded: Tell me how Auctionomics was created and how you become a co-founder of a company at such a young age.Silvia Console Battilana: You might recall the days of TARP, the treasury bail out. At the time my co-founder, Paul Milgrom, the godfather of auction theory worldwide, had asked me for coffee to ask if I wanted to start a company with him. He had invented a brilliant new auction design (the Milgrom assignment auction) and wanted to make a software company out of it. I vividly remember the Coupa Café coffee table where the conversation took place.I obviously agreed and we would probably have started very slowly if TARP had not happened. Within days the US Treasury was on the phone with us and wanted help designing an auction. There was lot of excitement, we quickly incorporated, booked a big office space and started recruiting.As you well know the big banks were against an auction so it did not materialize, however that excitement and thought of being able to shape markets with auctions it something that stayed with us. LB: How and why do you think this partnership happened?SCB: The journey has been complex. Paul had decided to pick a smart and very active recent PhD graduate instead of an experienced entrepreneur. That is the way the valley works, you place bets based on your gut. I had started a different test prep education company during my Phd years, and had also founded endless organisations from scratch: Stanford rotaract, the political economics group which included Harvard, Princeton and MIT students, a project in India to get water wells to remote villages, a project to bring computers to Bulgaria, a project to bring eye doctors to Panama and so on. I had lived in remote warrior village tribes in the jungle so probably I was fit for the big dollars jungle of business. So I had the "pedigree." Yet auctions was something I was not familiar with, and handling billion dollar projects with only academics and no business people to start with was challenging at the beginning. LB: Auctionomics is based in Palo Alto - Silicon Valley. There is still a dearth of women in tech out there, what is your experience with this?SCB: I am Italian, so I am used to a culture that is much more macho than the Valley. I have always found the Valley to be a place where smart women are listened to, no matter how young they are. I have a funny story for you. The year I became CEO of my company I was a Visiting Professor in Bocconi University for a semester. I went to a bank to cash out money with my ATM. The machine ate my card. So I went in and asked them to return the card and give me €400. "It is not possible," they said. "Call the director," I answered. Nothing. I call my father, who lives in another city and within 15 minutes the director comes out with an envelope with the money, saying to please call upon him for anything I need - The power of a male over 50 years old. It was my money, and my bank account.So given where I come from culturally, I truly appreciate how you are taken very seriously in the Valley if you know what you are talking about. There is no dismissing you because you are female. And being young is a plus. That said, I host small off the record events for female entrepreneurs and top executives and hear that in the venture capital world it is still a little macho and old school.LB: I've met several young and successful female entrepreneurs in Davos this year but outside WEF, men still outweigh the proportion of women in STEM (science, tech, engineering, maths). Being exposed to female role models that are entrepreneurs or technical and are 'cool' is really essential. That is why the work fellow Young Global Leader Sheryl Sandberg is doing with stock pictures and advertising is very important. Exposing girls from a young age to the possibility of them being anything they want to be, including mathematicians, doctors, entrepreneurs, is key. There is a group of WEF participants called global shapers, leaders under the age of 30. I love to see their drive. Nothing is impossible, and there seems to be no gender for them. It gives me hope. Things unfortunately get rough at the C-suite level. My friends who are at that level in big public companies have to double prove themselves. And that of course trickles down.LB: In what ways can companies help to allow women to flourish in tech?SCB: Another movement that I find really fundamental in allowing women to raise in business is the support of the male partner in raising kids. I was very lucky to have a supportive husband who does his half. He's a very present father. If I have a business deal far away from home I know the kids have him. Mark Zuckerberg took his four months of paternity leave, sending a great message. I truly believe that paternity leave is a big answer to changing the balance: the global shapers have all the energy of the world, however maternity takes a hit on business women in societies that rely purely on the mother for child caring. I have built my company around delivery instead of being at an office. My team is spread internationally and gets together when we have big projects. They can do their work from wherever they want as long as they deliver. If they have kids we pay them one month of night nanny (to fathers or mothers). They do not have to choose between career or quality of life. If we are on a big project that takes them far from home for months, we fly their family in, kids and parents. This has allowed us to retain top talent: they can be at the top of the field without having to sacrifice their family. This is of course great for women who want to be present while still having a career. I think the future is going in this direction with the sharing economy. I was very lucky to have a supportive husband who does his half. He's a very present father. If I have a business deal far away from home I know the kids have him. Mark Zuckerberg took his four months of paternity leave, sending a great message. I truly believe that paternity leave is a big answer to changing the balance: the global shapers have all the energy of the world, however maternity takes a hit on business women in societies that rely purely on the mother for child caring. I have built my company around delivery instead of being at an office. My team is spread internationally and gets together when we have big projects. They can do their work from wherever they want as long as they deliver. If they have kids we pay them one month of night nanny (to fathers or mothers). They do not have to choose between career or quality of life. If we are on a big project that takes them far from home for months, we fly their family in, kids and parents. This has allowed us to retain top talent: they can be at the top of the field without having to sacrifice their family. This is of course great for women who want to be present while still having a career. I think the future is going in this direction with the sharing economy.
