The patient, a man in his 50s, was hospitalized with symptoms of central nervous system disease but eventually recovered.<h2>Powassan virus can cause severe brain infections</h2>The woman who died in Connecticut had a fever, chills, headache, chest pain, nausea, and altered mental status when she was admitted to the hospital, according to the state health department. Most people infected with Powassan virus do not experience such severe symptoms. The infection can be asymptomatic or cause mild flu-like illness, but older and immunocompromised people have a higher risk of becoming seriously ill.If the infection reaches the brain, it can cause life-threatening swelling known as tick-borne <keyword id="14157721" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="encephalitis" source="Orion">encephalitis</keyword>.
