It's a surprise for the 32-year-old, who was released in the final days of 2023 after serving 85% of her original 10-year sentence for second-degree murder in relation to the killing of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard.</p><p>The story of Blanchard, who is now believed to have had <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-munchausen-by-proxy-2024-1"><u>Munchausen by proxy</u></a> and subjected her daughter to numerous unnecessary medical procedures as a child, has been told on screen numerous times, most notably in the HBO documentary "Mommy Dead and Dearest" and the fictionalized Hulu series "The Act," while Blanchard-Anderson sat in prison.</p><p>In "The Prison Confessions," Blanchard-Anderson finally gets to tell her own story. It's an opportunity that executive producer Melissa Moore, who also co-authored Blanchard-Anderson's ebook, wanted to give her after first meeting Blanchard-Anderson in 2017. But according to Moore, Blanchard-Anderson didn't anticipate — nevermind engineer — the media storm that followed her release.</p><p>The two also share something in common: Both of their lives in the public sphere have been tied to a crime — one that they've had to see reinterpreted and imagined in both documentary and fictional properties. They wanted to invite Gypsy on to talk about the doc, so the show actually flew me to Chillicothe Prison. I made the request for her to meet with me and she agreed.</p><p>I flew in and met her in the general population meeting room. When you go to a prison, it's a very different environment than just visiting someone for coffee at Starbucks. I handed her the coins for the vending machine. She's like, "Oh, no, no, no." She shoved my hand away. "I can't take it." And I had to go to the vending machine and pick what she wanted because she can't touch any coins. When she started to cry at one point in the conversation, I touched her arm and she's like, "Oh no, you can't touch me." It's kind of jarring.</p><p>I asked her if she'd be interested in talking more about the doc, and she said no. At that point, this was a lot for her to just even talk. And I said, "Well, let's stay in touch." And then we started to talk about guys. She wanted advice about boys and relationship advice. And the conversation went off that.</p><p>I felt immediately that this is a girl; this was a young lady who was becoming a woman. And that's instantly what I felt when I met her, is that she's a woman becoming.</p><p><strong>You've written and spoken pretty extensively about your own story. What made you decide to work in true-crime media after that?</strong></p><p>Well, one thing that Gypsy and I had in common was that we both had pain in our life. And I think we both related to each other in the sense that people think they know us based on a crime. I know there was more to me in relation to my father than what was told in the media, so I also understood that aspect for Gypsy. We both were connected to people that I would say were narcissistic, or they had mental health issues, and so I could relate to Gypsy on that level too. Outsiders are telling our story, and we don't have a say in it.</p><p>That's what got me into creating documentaries: wanting to give the microphone to the people that need to have it, the people whose stories are being talked about. They should have a say in how their story is perceived, and not just perceived, but the truth. Because there's a lot of misconceptions when there's dramatizations or movies based on your life or your parents' crimes, and people take it as nonfiction.</p><p>I saw that happening with, in particular, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-act-hulu-cast-vs-real-people-gypsy-rose-blanchard-2019-3">"The Act,"</a> for Gypsy. While it got a lot of things correct, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gypsy-rose-blanchard-the-act-not-involved-affected-prison-life-2024-1">Gypsy was not a part of "The Act."</a> That's a misconception that people have, that she participated in that. She was in prison while people were playing her as a character in Hollywood.</p><p><strong>Getting </strong><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2019-emmys-nominees-winners-2019-7"><strong>Emmy nominations</strong></a><strong> for playing her, too</strong>.</p><p>Yeah. She was a janitor sweeping the floors while actresses are getting awards being her. I don't think people understand how it can skew your identity. What am I, then? Am I a character? Am I a real person?</p><div type="image" title="joey king gypsy rose blanchard the act" height="4912" width="6549" msid="107189366" hostid="261" sizebytes="2886802"></div><p>To me, documentaries are very empowering because you get to give the floor to the subject to say what they need to say. And Gypsy had multiple years working with me to say everything she wanted to say, and I felt really good about having that premiere, knowing that people thought they knew her, but they were going to see her in a different way.</p><p><strong>The media buzz around Gypsy's release has been really intriguing, between the Lifetime series and "Released," plus how vocal she's been on social media and during her press tour. What has it been like to see her take ownership of her narrative like that, both as a producer and as a friend?</strong></p><p>Well, as a friend — I have adult children and they graduated from high school — it feels kind of like a graduation day, in the sense that she served her sentence of eight-and-a-half years in prison. She became what we saw at the beginning of the doc, which is a frail, fragile, undernourished, shaven-head Gypsy, to this person who is in her 30s now. She's 32. And walking out in such a bold, public way is very surreal.</p><p>But I'm proud of her because I know she's ready to take on what she has to take on because she has the help of a therapist. She has people, she has her family, which gives me so much comfort.</p><p><strong>It's been stunning to see the wave of support for her and there are lots of people rooting for her. But obviously, some people are critical of how visible she's become after her release</strong>.</p><p>That's not her fault. That's my fault. It's my fault for airing a documentary at her release.</p><p><strong>I was curious about your thoughts on that.</strong></p><p>She genuinely did not know what she was walking into when she left. I actually recall when she was released, I had to tell her there was paparazzi. And she was shocked. She was like, "Why are they here?"</p><p>She was so surprised. I mean, she wasn't expecting this level of attention, and she didn't plan this to be the case.</p><p>I also think, genuinely, people were rooting for her to be released, and the fascination and the excitement for her release just compounded. It was bigger than her.</p><p><strong>You said in the docuseries press conference that from here on out, your role is to support Gypsy as she lives her life and makes her own choices. I'm curious what that means to you now that the documentary is released, and what hopes you have for her.</strong></p><p>With Gypsy, it was always about what she wants. I had to realign because my vision for her wasn't her vision for her.</p><p>Her choice to get married in prison was one that I really grappled with. Actually, we didn't talk for about 30 days. When she broke the news to me that she was getting married, I was taken aback, and I told her that I honestly felt that she was making a mistake, and it felt like I couldn't protect her from herself. But as I got to know her intentions, and that she's a strong 32-year-old woman, she reminded me that she knows what's best for her.</p><p>Her family felt the same way. We were all nervous about that choice for her, but she made that choice for her. Ultimately, that's what we have to do, is let people make their own choices. And that's what the 30-day pause was — for me, it was not about us being upset with each other. We were not. Because I did: I pictured her being released from prison, and I saw her living this independent female life and dating on the outside. I had a whole vision for her. And then I came to realize that she has a different vision for her. But that was the learning lesson, is that I need to go back to being the observer. And there have to be boundaries.</p><p>After that 30-day pause, we reduced the amount of time that we were actually talking. We were talking weekly at that point, and I was doing recordings with her every Tuesday. And so then, I made it so we were just doing recordings once a month or every couple of weeks, and taking a step back and being more of the observer and not giving any advice. Because that's what friends do, but producers don't give advice.</p><p><strong>I imagine that's a difficult boundary to set</strong>.</p><p>Right now, I'm really happy that she has a therapist and she has her family, because now what I can say to her is, "Hey, what does your therapist think?" I can hear her tell her story. I can listen and not have a response of, "Hey, I think you should do this, or that."</p><p>Now my response is, "Oh, have you talked to your mom about this?" She calls her stepmom, Kristy, mom. "Have you talked to your mom about this? What does your dad think about this? How do you feel about this?" It's good to hear that she has one now. Is there anything else that you think people should know that we haven't touched on?</strong></p><p>I feel that people probably are concerned about the people that are in her life. She was isolated by a master manipulator and they wonder, is she safe now as a free woman? I can attest that she has a strong support system. Her father is protective, her mother is protective, her half-sister, Mia — I love Mia. I can always trust that Mia's going to say what I'm thinking, so I don't have to say it. Now I just say, "Gypsy, have you talked to Mia?"</p><p>I'm excited for her future because there's a lot of life for her to live, and everything is new. I think Gypsy is getting her footing to become a very strong advocate in the medical community about health, and Munchausen by proxy. I think she's going to bring a lot of change in that area, and I'm excited to watch her do that.</p> <p><strong>I saw Gypsy </strong><a target="_blank" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@gypsyroseblanchard727/video/7324829597093219615?is_from_webapp=1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;web_id=7192678209945847338"><strong>posted a TikTok</strong></a><strong> the other day starting to do that work, and explaining what Munchausen by proxy is. And I can imagine the comfort, in her position, to be able to actually see your medical chart.</strong></p><p>Can you imagine her fear when a doctor brings out a notepad and starts making notes? It's just probably going to bring back, "Well, what is he writing in that chart, and how does that affect me? Does he have more control over my body than I do?" And I think that's going to be something new that she's going to be exploring for herself, just how much more empowered she is with doctor's visits.</p><p><strong>It seems like people are really invested in her and her well-being. Though I can imagine the publicity, and social media attention, becoming overwhelming.</strong></p><p>That's one thing that I did notice while we were in public, is that people recognized her. When we go out to lunch and stuff, people's sentiment when they walk up to her is that they're wishing her well, and success in her life. And that's amazing to see, and I hope that it continues. Maybe.</p><p>At a time when chatbots are sounding more human than ever and art generators can create images that look like photos, a YouTuber named Pizza Later proved that with a bit of creativity and know-how of various AI tools, you can make a commercial in under three hours that might get noticed by <a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1651096664034144256?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Twitter CEO Elon Musk</a> and the <a href="https://twitter.com/pizzahut/status/1650962773109534742?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">official Pizza Hut account.</a></p><p>Pizza Later, who withheld his name to keep his online anonymity, told Insider that he works in motion graphics during the day. For almost a year, he's been tinkering with applications like Midjourney and Runway AI — a video generator — which is how he got the idea to create a commercial for a fictional pizza joint called Pepperoni Hug Spot.</p><p>Inspired by a "terrifying" AI clip of<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/watch-hilariously-bad-ai-modelscope-videos-will-smith-scarlett-johansson-2023-3"> Will Smith eating spaghetti</a> created on Runway, Pizza Later began putting together clips of people eating food to send to friends.</p><p>"And then from there, I just kind of sourced out the rest of the clips, just kind of imagining what else would be in a television commercial for a pizza place," he said.</p><p>He told Insider the entire process took three hours on Monday during a slow day at work. All the assets in the commercial were made with AI, from the resonant, professional-sounding voice-over to the bizarre clips insider the Pepperoni Hug Spot pizzeria.</p><p>"I'm old enough to remember a time before YouTube, and stuff used to be so time-consuming. And before my current job, I was actually in video production. I know how long it takes to set up lights and microphones and all that entails. So even though this stuff is really rough right now, it blows my mind."</p><p>Here's how you can make your own AI commercial.</p><h2><strong>Start off with a script </strong></h2><p>The foundation of every good commercial is a script to guide the production. Pizza Later said he used GPT-4, the<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-ai-pause-openai-gpt4-powerful-development-2023-3"> newest version of GPT</a>,  to create the dialogue for the voice-over. Since ChatGPT launched in December, there has been a<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/list-6-generative-ai-side-hustles-to-boost-your-income-2023-2"> rise in</a> content creators using the application to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-use-chatgpt-at-work-job-save-time-ai-2023-2">make their jobs easier.</a></p><p>"I'm not much of a writer, so it would probably take me much longer to come up with a script," he said. Pizza Later said that he intentionally asked the program to write this way to add to the eerieness and humor of the commercial.</p><p>He also said the name "Pepperoni Hug Spot" was something he brainstormed with GPT.</p><p>"It doesn't mean anything obviously. But it sounds funny. So that was when I went with."</p><h2><strong>Put together a voice-over </strong></h2><p>AI voiceover technology has become a pest in the music industry, as users online are releasing music pretending to be Drake, The Weeknd, and Travis Scott, as well as a meme online (like Joe Biden and Donald Trump <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/voice-ai-audio-joe-biden-donald-trump-tiktok-2023-3">yelling at each other through gaming headsets while playing Overwatch).</a></p><p>It's also helpful for creating a commercial without hiring a voice actor. Pizza Later told Insider that he used Eleven Labs to create the voiceover by plugging in the script created in GPT-4.</p><p>"I had it do three or four different reads because it varies in tone and sort of the speed with which it reads," he said.</p><h2><strong>Use an image generator to come up with art</strong></h2><p>The stills in the AI pizza commercial, including the final exterior shot of the phony pizzeria, were created using Midjourney, which Pizza Later described as "mind-blowing." To create an image, all you need is a descriptive prompt. According to an<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-write-better-ai-chatgpt-prompts-according-prompt-engineer-2023-3"> AI prompt engineer that previously spoke to Insider</a>, this means using a thesaurus to modify phrasing, paying attention to the verbs, and specifying the intent of your prompt — like asking it to create images in the style of a certain art technique or film style. </p><div type="image" title="A still of a red building with cars in front with a sign that says Pepperoni Hug Spot" height="1670" width="2226" msid="99881497" hostid="261" sizebytes="55066"></div><h2><strong>Use a video generator to come up with clips</strong></h2><p>The most noticeable aspect of the Pizza Hug Spot commercial was the video clips created using AI. Yes, they were disjointed, disconcerting, and full of discrepancies, but to create original video clips out of nothing wasn't even possible even a few months ago, Pizza Later said.</p><p>For the Pepperoni Hug Spot commercial, Pizza Later also used Runway AI, a text-to-video generator, to create short clips to add to the commercial. He told Insider he wouldn't be surprised if video AI technology became just as real as image generators in the near future.</p><h2><strong>Create a soundtrack that pulls everything together </strong></h2><p>Even AI <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spotify-ceo-music-industry-legitimate-concerns-ai-songs-2023-4">music generation</a> is now a thing. The software used in the pizza commercial, Soundraw, creates custom music in various genres, moods, and lengths. It allows you to choose specific instruments as well. </p><p>Most of the results sound extremely bland and corporate, but that might be just what you need for a commercial.</p><h2><strong>Edit it all together </strong></h2><p>The only part of the process that AI cannot do (yet) is video editing — in the commercial, the VHS filters, transitions, and some noises were all added in manually. However, Pizza Later said the AI made putting together the video much quicker.</p><p>"What I see in the future, and probably not too distant, especially if this progresses as quickly as something like Midjourney has, is let's say your favorite show comes out on Netflix or to your new favorite show, and it doesn't get renewed the next season. But I now have access to this video software or the software that allows me to generate video clips... all I have to do is ask it to create a 30-minute episode of my favorite show or an episode of 'Friends' that never existed before." </p><h2><strong>Put it up for the world to see</strong></h2><p>After releasing the commercial, Pizza Later said he was surprised by the widespread online reaction. Along with some humorous comments, he pointed out that many people did not even know some of this technology existed.</p><p>"I got a lot of really funny comments. Lots of like 'oh, this is nightmare fuel, but like the best kind of nightmare fuel.'"</p>

"As the pandemic has eased, they're now at a point where they're asking us to rethink everything." </p><p>Recent surveys show that while <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/survey-shows-workers-want-more-remote-flexibility-higher-pay-2021-9">employees value flexibility</a> and prefer working from home most days, <a href="https://envoy.com/blog/return-to-work-survey-reveals-what-employees-really-think-about-working-in-the-office/">many people want to spend at least some time at the office</a>. <a href="https://www.advisory.com/daily-briefing/2021/06/24/return-to-work">Research</a> from LinkedIn suggests that "in-person collaboration" and "socializing with colleagues and clients" are among the biggest draws. </p><p>As a result, many employers are renovating and redesigning their staid, stodgy offices to be more conducive to teamwork and collaboration, according to Georgeoglou. "They're asking: How do we create a space that supports our culture, our brand, and creates community?" </p><p>Amid a chronic labor shortage, the redesigns have profound implications for both the workforce and employers. <a href="https://view.com/sites/default/files/documents/workplace-wellness-study_1.pdf">Research from Gartner</a> shows that employees who are satisfied with their work environments are more productive, more likely to stay, and more attracted to their company over competitors. Meanwhile, <a href="https://chiefexecutive.net/whats-keeping-ceos-up-at-night-about-working-remotely/">many CEOs worry that too much remote work</a> could dent innovation. "That's what makes innovation happen."</p><p>Insider recently spoke with Georgeoglou about how offices are changing and what that may mean for the <keyword id="11896064" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="future-of-work" source="Orion">future of work</keyword>.</p><p><em>This interview was condensed and edited for clarity.</em></p><p><strong>What are some of the biggest office design trends you're seeing right now?</strong></p><p>There's more we-space and less me-space, and by that I mean there's much less of a focus on individual spaces and a much greater one on communal areas. </p><p>Before the pandemic, offices were open, dense, and noisy places. You'd see people sitting at tables with headphones on if they need to do concentrated work. But now when people need to do work like that, they do it at home, where they can be more productive. </p><p>Today people need to have a variety of collaborative spaces: small team rooms where three or four people can come together in-person and connect to a computer and bring in a colleague who's remote; large, open spaces that can be used for all-hands meetings, trainings, and events; and other communal spaces that are flexible and can be converted for a variety of purposes.</p><div type="image" title="Northern Trust Corporate Institutional and Global Services Center, Chicago." height="911" width="1214" msid="92735247" hostid="261" sizebytes="161166"></div><p><strong>At a time when employees are </strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/workers-want-autonomy-post-pandemic-workplace-2021-4"><strong>demanding more autonomy in how, where, and when they do their work</strong></a><strong>, do you think these changes will be enough to lure them back into the office?</strong></p><p>People are never going back to the office five days a week. But when they do come to the office, it's to have an experience and create community. They want to connect with peers; they want training; and they want mentoring. </p><p>I think of the workplace now as an offering of settings. You, as an employee, have options of settings and you pick and choose throughout the day based on the tasks you have to do.  </p><p><strong>Hybrid work, where employees spend some time working in the office and some time working from home, is considered the </strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hybrid-work-models-could-hurt-remote-workers-zillow-ceo-warns-2021-2"><strong>worst of both worlds</strong></a><strong> — especially from a tech perspective. How are companies solving that problem with new office set-ups?</strong></p><p>We are working closely with companies' AV teams to make everything easy and intuitive. An employee ought to be able to come into any space with their laptops, plug in, and connect seamlessly. </p><p>We are also working on ways to improve hybrid meetings. Typically, when you have some people who are physically present for a meeting and others who are dialing in, there are issues with the sound and with the visuals. The people further away from the screen are dots and you can hardly hear them. We're looking at how we orient these spaces with technology so that everybody feels like they're part of the same meeting. We are using more square and round tables so that everybody is equidistant from the camera, and we are improving the planning and placement of audio technology like microphones and speakers in conference rooms as well as acoustical considerations within the office so you can hear everyone the same. </p><p><strong>According to a pre-pandemic study by Harvard</strong> <strong>that </strong><a href="https://futureworkplace.com/future-workplace-wellness-study/"><strong>surveyed 1,601 employees across North America</strong></a><strong>, workers </strong><a href="https://hbr.org/2019/08/survey-what-employees-want-most-from-their-workspaces"><strong>want </strong></a><strong>very basic things from their offices, with access to natural light topping the list. Is this still as high a priority today?</strong></p><p>Previous studies have shown that natural light is linked to productivity. But now the focus is on wellness. Having access to daylight is a mood enhancer. It makes people feel better. Mental health and burnout are front and center in our conversations with employers. They know that it's important for people to have ample natural light for their wellbeing. This is just one way that well-designed workplaces can improve the quality of life for employees.</p><p><strong></strong></p><div type="image" title="A bright and sunny modern office." height="1074" width="1433" msid="92735248" hostid="261" sizebytes="212736"></div><strong>Speaking of burnout, how are employers updating their offices in ways that could help reduce stress levels?</strong><p>Research shows that exposure to nature can inspire creativity and even lower stress. So we use a lot of natural materials, like stone and wood, that evoke nature. We've also found that a printed wall covering that has a picture of mountains and waterfall has the same effect. </p><p><strong>The ways in which Americans do their jobs has changed dramatically over the past two years and it will no doubt continue to evolve. </strong><strong>How many of the changes to the office that we're seeing right now will stick? </strong></p><p>From what we're hearing from CEOs and seeing and our research, the office must be a destination. Employees have already proven that they can be productive at home, but particularly for creative fields, bringing people together in the office to collaborate has been shown to trigger more creativity and idea sharing.</p><p>The changes to the office that we will see stick are elements that let it compete with the home office, aspects of wellness like circadian and natural lighting, air quality and ergonomics, fitness areas, and wellness and nursing suites. What will make the shared office the workplace of choice, at least some of the time, is options that match the needs of the work you're doing such as collaborative spaces of varying scale and formality, and most importantly, elements that emphasize the brand and culture of companies.  </p>

From your call screen, click the "Share Screen" button. Whether you do so on your phone or computer, this button is found at the bottom center. Tap on your screen or move your cursor if this menu has disappeared. You can also use the Shift + Command + S shortcut on your <keyword id="62949" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="MaC">Mac</keyword> or Alt + Shift +S on a PC. </p><div type="image" title="image8 share" height="1800" width="2880" msid="79271937" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>2.</strong> On your desktop, this will open a pop-up with options. This will reopen the menu, where you can switch apps or choose to use the whiteboard. In addition to the "New Share" option, you'll find other helpful buttons.</p><ul><li>Click the appropriate buttons to mute or unmute and start or stop your video.</li><li>Click "Participants" to view your participants. Find your meeting information below.</li><li>Click "Stop Share" or "Pause Share" to stop the broadcast.</li><li>Click "Annotate" to open a separate pop-up. Click the "X" to close this window, where you'll find many tools. For example, you may find it helpful to draw arrows or circles to highlight important information on the screen.</li><li>Click "More" to open a drop-down menu where you can find a condensed version of Zoom call features, such as chatting with callers or invite more. </li><li>On the mobile version, you'll have to complete a few extra steps. After you tap "Share Content," a pop-up will appear. They'll likely announce the full name when it gets closer to its official launch date.</p><p>Today, they're just showing us a developer preview. </p><p>Making app permissions easier to understand seems to be a big focus in Android M. Google's vice president of engineering Dave Burke says that smartphone users will no longer have to agree to permissions they don't want to. And, Android apps will condense permissions down to the ones that are most crucial, such as your phone's camera and the microphone. </p><p>Permissions are terms that you agree to when you download an app. They allow apps to access certain parts of your phone, like the camera, microphone, your contacts, and so on. </p><p>Chrome custom tabs is another new feature coming to Android. <p>People will put up with a lot of crap for stuff they deem "worth it."</p><p>They'll spend huge amounts of money. They'll sit on 20-hour flights. They'll dig enormous holes in their own property, then fill those holes with water.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Nacho Doce / Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">This dog splashed out for his own bone-shaped swimming pool. FANCY!</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The HTC Vive virtual reality system occupies the same space occupied by high-end sportscars, exotic vacations, and swimming pools. It's an expensive, convoluted technology that is capable of creating incredible, unmatched experiences.</p><p>This is the bizarre duality I face in telling you about the HTC Vive, which is shipping on April 5 to people who pre-ordered the $800 virtual reality system.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Corey Protin</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>It's hard to be hyperbolic about how incredible the Vive is to use.</p><p>It's literally the only system offering room-scale virtual reality, meaning you can get up and walk around and interact with the virtual world using the Vive's shockingly effective motion controllers.</p><p>At the same time, it's easy to be hyperbolic about how many glaring issues the Vive faces.</p><p>Standing up and walking around in VR is distinctly less appealing when you're attached to an expensive computer via three heavy wires. That's <em>before</em> you add in headphones, <em>before</em> you talk about the messy setup process, <em>before</em> you set aside a dedicated space in your home for it.</p><p>The Vive is amazing. And it's also a mess.</p><h2>The "Incredible, Unmatched" stuff</h2><p>There are certain moments you encounter with the Vive where you realize that, <em>yes</em>, this is absolutely the future. For me, it was the first time I opened a drawer using the Vive's motion controllers.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Valve Software</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The concept of opening a drawer within a video game is about pressing a button.</p><p>"Press A to open drawer" or whatever. I point where I'm looking at the thing, and the game says "Okay you can now do whatever action is associated with this thing." So it's a pretty big deal when, after decades of playing video games, I'm able to reach out and simply pull out the drawer.</p><p>I reached forward, seeing my "hand" in the game also reach forward, and pulled the controller's trigger. My in-game hand grasped the drawer's handle, and I was able to pull it backwards and push it forwards just as I would in real life. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Corey Protin / Tech Insider</span></p><p class="caption">These are the Vive motion controllers, one for each hand.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>It sounds small, I realize. It's not! That's a <em>huge</em> change. </p><p>The controllers are what makes the Vive so different from stuff like Facebook's Oculus Rift and Sony's PlayStation VR - the Vive's main competition. If great VR is all about putting you in a new environment - to immerse you - motion control is the closest you can get to actually interacting with that new environment.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>HTC / Oculus VR / Sony</span></p><p class="caption">From left to right: HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, PlayStation VR. These are the three big players in high-end virtual reality headsets.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>These controllers, combined with the Vive's motion tracking system that lets you stand up and walk around in VR, are the closest we've got to putting your actual hands into virtual worlds.</p><p>The system is limited to a single room, and the headset's massive trio of wires get in the way all the time, and it gets pretty tiring flailing your arms around and playing on your feet all the time. That said, the experience is mesmerizing. </p><p>It's genuinely hard to be too hyperbolic about the Vive. Every single person who's used it in our office - a bunch of jaded tech writers - has freaked out. It's simple stuff, like being able to look down and see a perfect re-creation of the Vive's motion controllers in the air in front of you. Or being able to simply grab objects - people always ask "Which button do I press?", and the answer is always, "Just grab it."</p><p>That's magical every single time, like explaining to someone how "Wii Tennis" works. Just swing the remote, like a tennis racket! "Ooooooohhhhhh!" is the common refrain. When you're playing "Cloudlands: Mini Golf VR" and the only learning curve is your own ability to swing a golf club, it's evident why this is the next major step in computing.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Futuretown</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>You can even navigate your Windows 10 desktop using the Vive - motion controls become hyper-accurate mouse tools. Sadly, there's no efficient way to type just yet (though there is a microphone built into the Vive, which would make an awful lot of sense for voice control). Still, we could see the Vive being the office of the future, right in your virtual reality headset. You can have as many computer monitors as you want, at any size, in a room of your design. The Vive isn't quite capable of delivering that just yet (or, at very least, the software hasn't been written), but what it can do isn't far off.</p><h2>The "Glaring Issues" stuff</h2><p>Ferrari owners don't complain about how hot the engine makes the car - or the lack of amenities like air conditioning, or how expensive the cars are - because they know what they're getting into. That's part of the deal. If you bought it to show off and you're upset, Ferrari will gladly sell it to someone else. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Julie Zeveloff/Business Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>If you're prepared to drop $800 on the Vive, and you've got a computer that's capable of powering it, and you've got the space to set it up, you've already bought in, right? You know what you're getting into.</p><h3>1: Wires</h3><p>Maybe it won't bother you that there are three long, rubber wires lurching out of the back of the Vive headset. They get in the way pretty much constantly, either wrapped around a leg or hung uncomfortably on the back of your neck.</p><p>The wires are, by far, the worst part of the HTC Vive.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Ben Gilbert / Tech Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Experiencing so-called "room scale" VR is incredible. Unfortunately it's also totally illogical when you're tethered by several wires to an expensive computer powering the headset you've got on.</p><p>The Vive system tries getting around all these wires by using a small box as a buffer between the headset and your computer. You plug the headset into the small box, then plug the small box (via wires) into your computer. But it's not a solution; it's little more than a slight extension of the headset's wire (which, in fairness, is considerable in length, making it all the easier to get tangled around you). If you pull the box, and the box pulls the PC, it doesn't matter that the box ever existed.</p><p>There's a fourth wire that I haven't even mentioned yet.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Ben Gilbert / Tech Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>That's the 1/8th-inch headphone jack wire that flops loose alongside the other three. Since there aren't headphones built into the headset, it comes with a small set of HTC earbuds can be attached. They're fine, but adding another wire to an already wire-filled process is far from ideal. Adding larger wired headphones is another headache, and Bluetooth headphones introduce audio lag that makes them unusable. The Vive should have headphones built in, even cheap ones.  </p><h3>2: Poor design</h3><p>The front of the Vive headset is comfortable. I've not experienced the red-faced mark left by the Oculus Rift while using the HTC Vive. It's the back where all the problems start.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Facebook / Oculus VR</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Here's what the Oculus Rift gets right: The mess of wires powering the headset are condensed down to one, simple wire. It splits into two plugs where it meets your computer, but it's otherwise just one wire. It can even be removed from the headset if you wish. The headphones on the Rift are part of the headset, built in. You slide on the Rift like you slide on a baseball cap. It's easy!</p><p>Things are different on the Vive. There are three distinct wires routed along the top of the straps where the headset rests on your noggin.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Ben Gilbert / Tech Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>These relatively stiff wires are bizarrely run on top of the top-most strap. All three straps are cloth, and all three have Velcro attachments. The wires on the top literally run over the velcro, making it difficult to adjust. It's easy to nearly drop the whole headset while trying to adjust the straps on your head. It's just as easy to nearly drop the headset but, at the last second, catch it with your head as three long, rubber wires painfully pull your hair.</p><p>It's difficult to put on the Vive. It's difficult to take off the Vive. It's difficult to adjust the Vive. There is nothing smart about the design of the headset's back fitting - the part where you attach it to your cranium. It feels like a prototype, frankly, and it's a glaring contrast to the front of the headset (which, while large, is surprisingly light and comfortable on the face). </p><h3>3: Obtuse setup</h3><p>Sure, you've got space set aside in your living room/office/spare bedroom/whatever to dedicate to the Vive. But are you prepared to potentially drill holes in that room's upper corners to mount the Vive's tracking boxes? Ah great, you've got some high shelves. Are you okay with long wires running from those boxes to power outlets? </p><p>There's an app that guides setup of the Vive VR system - the headset, the controllers (two) and the motion tracking boxes (two) - and it's relatively simple. But the very first thing you're asked to do with the Vive is set up motion tracking, and it's a serious first step. Drill through what? These long wires are permanently dangling from my walls? </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Ben Gilbert / Tech Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>There are other issues, too.</p><p>In our kit, after going through the entirety of the setup app, one of the Vive's motion controllers needed a firmware update. So we plugged the controller in to our computer, went through with the update, and started all over from the beginning. Not a huge deal by any means, but far from the seamless, quick experience that is setting up an Oculus Rift. This is the kind of small stuff that Oculus intentionally streamlined with the Rift. Call it nitpicking if you want, but first impressions matter!</p><h2>This is "The Future," but we're not ready yet</h2><p>I have no doubt that the Vive delivers the strongest virtual reality experience available.</p><p>The headset itself is comparable to the Oculus Rift, though the Rift is better designed in nearly every way. But where the Vive trumps the Rift - for now, anyway - is in motion control and ability to deliver, today, a full-room VR experience.</p><p>Walking around in Google's "Tilt Brush" painting application, 3D-painting in a black room, is unmatched on the Oculus Rift.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Chandana Ekanayake / Google</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Solving the physics-based puzzles in the surreal "Fantastic Contraption" by using the motion controllers is a true delight, and had me easily convinced I was perched on a floating neon platform creating masterful vehicles. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Northway Games</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Getting repeatedly shot in the face by Polygon's Ben Kuchera in "Hover Junkers" was a blast. It was even more fun to duck and jump and carefully line up shots, being careful to hide myself behind cover. The notion of a first-person shooter completely changes when your shots legitimately line up with your gun's iron sights. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Stress Level Zero</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The Vive is, right now, pure potential.</p><p>It's the first look at what's to come - the first iPhone compared to the iPhone 4, Napster to Spotify - and that's going to be more than enough for some folks to jump in. If you're one of those people: Listen, I totally understand. You're my people. Bless your heart.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>HTC</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>For the rest of you sweet, logical people, the Vive is both the best VR system available and something you probably shouldn't buy just yet. For as incredible an experience as it can create, it's equally matched in discomfort - the headset's straps, paired with the wire situation and the headphone situation, make an expensive, bleeding-edge electronics product feel woefully underdone. </p><p>But then that's a bit like saying "the water in this gorgeous swimming pool is a bit chilly." I get to swim in this gorgeous pool, right? So what if the headset's a bit uncomfortable when it's capable of magically transporting you - and your hands and sort of your body - into fantastical worlds? I'll put up with it, I suppose.
