Can you tell me how you came to partner with Amex for this exclusive merch item and what inspired the design?Absolutely. It's Coachella weekend so I wanted to have a really fun, special experience with the fans and with the song "Heather." Obviously, it's about a sweater, so I wanted to make an exclusive sweater for Coachella weekend. I thought it would be nice.I'm going to be partnering with Amex to make the first-ever Amex artist shop. And it's going to be really fun for all the card members.As I understand it, you wrote "Heather" about a significant heartbreak you had in high school. How does it feel to sing it as an adult, knowing how much it means to people, when it was inspired by a painful experience?It's the kind of song that's relatable to anyone who's ever felt like the second choice, or felt like the one that wasn't chosen and wasn't picked. We all have a Heather in our lives. Doesn't matter who you are, how old you are, or what point in your life you are at. There's that person that you just compare yourself to constantly. I think that's why Heather means so much to me. Over the years, being able to sing it has helped a lot with healing over those painful feelings.<div type="image" title="conan gray coachella sweater" height="3366" width="4480" msid="90865225" hostid="261"></div>Do you find that you have to tap into those emotions when you perform emotional songs, or do they take on a different meaning when you're on stage?They very much take on a different meaning over time. Singing the song every night to all these happy, screaming fans, I think, makes the song feel less like something that I went through alone. I wrote the song feeling very much like nobody was going to relate. Instead, it ended up being very, very relatable to a lot of people. So it was oddly very comforting, seeing them in Heather sweaters and seeing that I very much wasn't the one who felt that kind of pain in my life.I saw your first festival performance at Lollapalooza in 2019 and now you've got prime placement on this all-important Coachella poster. Has your attitude about performing live changed since your audience has grown?No, not at all. Back then I was stunned that anyone cared and even to this day, I'm stunned that anybody cares.Coachella is going to be a really special moment for the whole fan base and I just hope that being able to have a little sweater to commemorate it will be very cute for all of us.Speaking of performing, you recently appeared with <keyword id="11931744" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="olivia-rodrigo" source="Orion">Olivia Rodrigo</keyword> during her "Sour" tour to sing Katy Perry's "The One That Got Away." How did that come about and why did you two pick that song?Vancouver was the only spot on both of our tours that we were overlapping and we both played shows that night in Vancouver. We were FaceTiming the night before and we were so excited that we were going to see each other that we totally hadn't even thought of performing together. So we just threw together a cover of a song that we sing together all the time, just back when we're home. It was a really special experience and a very special night.Obviously, I have to ask you about your recent album announcement. Can you give me any insight into the title "Superache?"To me, "Superache" is just a word that I made up because I wanted to capture that feeling of lingering love and the super-emotional feeling that you feel when you're young. But I also wanted to make it feel almost sarcastic at times and very much show that the pain is almost at your own demise. It's this kind of ache that you can only get over by ranting to your friends, sobbing, writing songs, and being really dramatic about it all. The album has a lot of super-high and super-low moments. It's sarcastic and fun, but also really vulnerable and painful a lot of the time. I wanted to capture that whole feeling in a word.I wondered about that, because I felt a bit of irony in the word — just because "super" sounds so youthful, almost like an eye roll. That was intentional?Yeah. I wanted you to be able to read the title and think like, "Oh, this is a type of ache where you're self-aware that you're being a little dramatic about it."I also want to ask you about <a href="https://twitter.com/conangray/status/1512860781142028291?s=20&amp;t=QBxdcWTIGa2Vle8mCBB2GQ">the video teaser</a>, because I noticed on the box, it said "SP+AC." Now knowing the title is "Superache," it plays into that. But I wondered if that had another significance?None at all. I saw a bunch of theories that were really funny, but not at all. It was just to hopefully leak the title to the fans who could decode it ahead of time. While I was on tour, I was handing out cups of coffee to all the people lining up before the show, and I was writing the letters of the title on all the cups of coffee. I was giving hints, that's all it was.So each cup of coffee had one letter so people could put them together?Yeah. That reminds me of that "Victorious" episode. Did you ever see that?Oh my God! Where they wanted to win the Ke$ha concert.Yes, exactly.Yes! I remember that. That was amazing.I know that your fans are very passionate, always looking for clues and hints about new music. Have you ever seen a theory that you're like, "That's insane and makes no sense, but I love it?"Every single day. I mean, for a long time, the <a href="https://twitter.com/Queen_Nazyalens/status/1504592980245721089?s=20&amp;t=YZ7HqcTbJ5ZMhyYottI7lg">running theory</a> was that the album was going to be named "Sad Prince." That just made me laugh. Every single time I saw it I was like, "Guys, I'm not going to name my album that."How would you describe this style of music, or the direction you've gone with this album in comparison to your debut?I think you can feel that I've had a bit of time to think about the past few years and that I'm no longer in high school. I'm no longer a teenager. Writing "Kid Krow" was just introducing myself and saying hello. And like, "Hi, this is who I am. This is the kind of stuff that I talk about and want to talk about right now. I've been heartbroken once in high school and it was hard." But with "Superache," it felt like scraping my ribs of anything left that I had to say. I very much had to look in the mirror and think, "What do I want to tell these people? Do I really want to say that?" In the end, it became a very revealing album and a very vulnerable album. And it felt like all the things that I didn't say in the beginning.Can you tell me what inspired your next single? It's a song called "Memories." It's about that kind of feeling — when you're trying to get over someone and they're making it so much worse by constantly showing up in your life over and over. When you're really in love with someone, you're always like, "I'll love you forever. Stay in my memories forever." But I wanted to take that phrase and be like, "I actually wish that you would stay in my memories. Stop showing up in real life. Please stay there. I don't want any new memories from you. Don't make this any harder than it already is."I was at dinner with one of my friends and she was like, "Oh, I'm thinking about texting my ex." And I was like, "Why?" And she was like, "I don't know. I just thought I would. I miss him."So I'm like, "Yeah, but you broke up with him. So let him rest. Leave him alone. Let him heal over you, let him get over you. That's a mean thing to do." And that's kind of where the inspiration for the song came from.You're a good friend. "I am mixed race and I chose to use the emojis that I felt best represented my skin tone."</li></ul>After screenshots and criticism of Conan Gray's past emoji usage began to circulate online, the Gen Z <a href="https://www.teenvogue.com/story/conan-gray-kid-krow-interview">pop star</a> stepped in to address the matter in a series of tweets on Thursday. "Many of you have brought to my attention my use of tan emojis," Gray <a href="https://twitter.com/conangray/status/1286369985909030912?s=20">wrote</a>. "I apologize to anybody who was hurt by my use of emojis that you believe are too dark for me to use. I am mixed race and I chose to use the emojis that I felt best represented my skin tone."The controversy centered on Gray's decision to use a tan-skinned emoji to represent himself in a comment on TikTok. Many fans and followers felt the skin tone Gray selected for the emoji was "<a href="https://twitter.com/CULTBLACKDRESS/status/1286078419172827137?s=20">significantly darker</a>" than his actual skin color. "Most of you have never met me in real life and are unaware of how I look in person," Gray <a href="https://twitter.com/conangray/status/1286370190750437376?s=20">continued</a> in a follow-up tweet. "I am not pale. I am not white. I am mixed race, and I was only trying to find an emoji with a skin tone that felt most accurate to me and my background."The five skin tone options we still have today were introduced by the <keyword id="179521" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Unicode-Consortium">Unicode Consortium</keyword> in 2015, along with the ability to change an emoji's skin tone, in a long-overdue effort to accommodate an increasingly diverse world. The five shades were created based on the Fitzpatrick scale, a six-point numerical system for classifying human skin color. In an episode of The Verge's podcast "Why'd You Push That Button?" reporters Ashely Carman and Kaitlyn Tiffany spoke to <a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1803.10738">researcher Alexander Robertson</a> about his 2018 study on how people use emoji skin tone modifiers on <keyword id="6354616" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Twitter">Twitter</keyword>. According to Robertson's findings, "the vast majority of skin tone usage" matched "the color of a user's profile photo," and generally, "people do tend to use these emoji to match themselves quite closely." Even so, Robertson went on, "five skin tones for emoji just isn't enough.""The difference between skin tone four and five for emoji is much more different compared to between two and three or three and four," Robertson told Carman during the interview. "This means that there's a whole load of people who probably fall somewhere between four and five who aren't being represented."In an essay for the <a href="https://www.dailydot.com/irl/skin-tone-emoji/">Daily Dot</a>, writer Zara Rahman noted, too, that five, fixed skin tone options will always fall short of Unicode's stated goal for the project. <ul class="summary-list"><li>The music festival All Things Go took place on Saturday and Sunday in Maryland and New York.</li><li>Chappell Roan, a major draw, dropped out at the last minute — but other performers made up for it.</li></ul>On Sunday evening, MUNA welcomed the crowd at Maryland's Merriweather Post Pavilion to All Things Go Music Festival, which the group lovingly dubbed "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://x.com/wheremunais/status/1840759953323151440">Lesbopalooza</a>."When the word flashed onto the big screen, the crowd's ear-splitting reaction spoke for itself. The three queer bandmates, Katie Gavin, Naomi McPherson, and Josette Maskin, went on to deliver a triumphant hourlong set that toed the line between horny and silly. There was grinding during the sex-fantasy anthem "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://youtu.be/O38S8D2O1oA?si=HCgR6G-F2cC-38Ud">No Idea;</a>" they threw a bunch of inflatable ponies into the pit during "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://youtu.be/olo9MCKosAI?si=gYLeAn9A6QrAU5nY">Anything But Me</a>," a song that begins, "You're gonna say that I'm on a high horse / I think that my horse is regular-sized."Many bands dream of being met with this kind of rabid enthusiasm someday. But the remarkable thing was that MUNA wasn't even the artist the festival crowd had bought tickets to see.The original performer intended for that slot, Chappell Roan, pulled out of the festival the day before it began, leaving organizers to work "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://x.com/AllThingsGo/status/1840047611731993047">around the clock</a>" to fill the gap in their schedule.Luckily, MUNA was already set to perform at the inaugural New York installment of the festival on Saturday, so the band agreed to double up. Though Roan was not billed as a headliner, by the time the festival rolled around, her monthly listeners on Spotify had swelled to over 45 million, far surpassing the majority of her fellow performers (and second only to Sunday headliner Hozier).Even in her absence, Roan's aesthetic was everywhere. The festival was dotted with her "Midwest Princess" merchandise and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chappell-roan-pink-pony-club-song-history-success-2024-9">"Pink Pony Club"-style cowboy hats</a>. Roan was <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://nypost.com/2024/09/27/entertainment/chappell-roan-faces-backlash-for-canceling-festival-appearance-unprofessional/">widely criticized</a> for withdrawing from the festival on such short notice; her decision came after a week of backlash, sparked by poorly phrased political statements that Roan shared on TikTok. On Friday, when she announced her mini hiatus, Roan told fans the noise had gotten "overwhelming."Still, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://x.com/AllThingsGo/status/1840263082225865096">festival organizers</a> and performers were united in Roan's corner. In a statement, All Things Go said it "strongly supports artists prioritizing their well-being." MUNA even <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://x.com/wheremunais/status/1840415256310411332">added a cover</a> of Roan's breakout hit "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RKqOmSkGgM">Good Luck Babe!</a>" to their setlist, describing it as a "group exercise" in showing her love and support.This position makes sense, as All Things Go has long been committed to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/all-things-go-music-festival-review-recap-2023-10">booking and uplifting both women and queer artists</a>.MUNA has demonstrated the same commitment, particularly over the past few years while they've toured to support their 2022 self-titled album. The band regularly recruits friends — usually women and artists from the LGBTQ+ community — to join the stage for their finale song, "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhyk9rchC2c">Silk Chiffon</a>," including the likes of Phoebe Bridgers (who's featured on the studio version), Lorde, Gracie Abrams, Arlo Parks, Julien Baker, and most recently, Lucy Dacus."Silk Chiffon" may be MUNA's biggest song to date, the indie hit that ushered in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/muna-taylor-swift-group-chat-songs-queer-joy-interview-2023-10">their self-described "queer joy" era</a>, but it's only one of many gems on their setlist. Indeed, for fans who ventured to All Things Go for Roan and got MUNA instead, it's hard to imagine how they could walk away unsatisfied. Their two catalogs share many of the same themes: rebellion, transformation, self-determination, sapphic lust, and, most importantly, hope and resilience in the face of judgment and bigotry.<div type="image" title="Reneé Rapp and Towa Bird kiss onstage at All Things Go in Maryland." height="2000" width="3000" msid="113829826" hostid="261" sizebytes="268778"></div>Roan's fans were understandably let down by her absence, but if All Things Go showed us anything, it's that there's a deep well of queer musicians working today who are equally deserving of attention and admiration.Put another way: Roan is not the only member of the LGBTQ+ community making escapist-yet-intimate pop music right now, although the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pop-stars-criticizing-fans-chappell-roan-taylor-swift-doja-cat-2024-8">parasocial behavior she's inspired</a> might make you believe that she is.The backlash Roan received this week was at least partially warranted — she failed to effectively communicate her <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://time.com/7023308/chappell-roan-kamala-harris-endorse-trump-problems-both-sides-reactions/">criticism of the Democratic party</a>, causing her to fall into the familiar trap of "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/wordplay/bothsidesing-bothsidesism-new-words-were-watching">bothsidesing</a>," and then failed to effectively address that constructive criticism — but it's also true that her rise to stardom has led to vicious harassment and unreasonably high expectations for her life, her personality, and her career. Much of the obsession with Roan seems to spring from the notion that she is representing the queer community in a way that doesn't exist elsewhere (and therefore must represent the community perfectly), which is simply false.It's true that Roan has managed to uplift pockets of queer culture that are often overlooked or unjustly vilified, especially drag performers and trans people. She has also been celebrated for speaking out for social justice initiatives. But she's certainly not alone in these pursuits. Onstage at All Things Go, MUNA made a point to dedicate "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://youtu.be/JDOiWGAaT8E?si=0KvgsEwOV5SHKj_X">Kind of Girl</a>" to the trans people in the audience, and to introduce their performance of "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-t5gGm3NWU4">I Know a Place</a>" — an optimistic rallying cry for queer kids who feel unsafe or unloved, kind of like their very own "Pink Pony Club" — with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.billboard.com/music/music-news/muna-chappell-roan-cover-all-things-go-1235787997/">an impassioned speech against fascism</a>.<div type="image" title="Janelle Monáe performs at All Things Go in Maryland." height="1996" width="3000" msid="113829821" hostid="261" sizebytes="900740"></div>And MUNA was hardly the only queer act at the festival. Their performance was followed by <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/renee-rapp-too-well-sex-lives-mean-girls-interview-2023-4">Reneé Rapp</a>, the shamelessly <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/renee-rapp-mean-girls-press-tour-media-training-2024-1">unfiltered</a> vocal powerhouse who came out as a lesbian earlier this year. Other standouts included Towa Bird, who delivered her own guitar-fueled set before joining her girlfriend Rapp onstage for "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGeLt9pMDgU">Tummy Hurts</a>;" Amber Bain of The Japanese House, whose stunning indie-pop jewels like ":)" and "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-songs-this-year-ranked-best-tracks-2023-12">Boyhood</a>" explore her journeys with queerness and gender; Maren Morris of "The Middle" fame, who recently came out as bisexual; acclaimed singer-songwriter Ethel Cain, who is trans; <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/conan-gray-coachella-merch-new-album-superache-interview-2022-4">Conan Gray</a>, beloved for his poignant portrayals of gay yearning; and Janelle Monáe, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/9-celebrities-who-identify-as-gender-non-binary-2019-6">a self-identified "free-ass motherfucker"</a> who dazzled the festival crowd with campy costume changes, gay anthems, and show-stopping vocals.None of these artists have reached the same level of mainstream success as Roan, but that's kind of the problem — and the point. When there's only one person forced upon a pedestal, she's almost destined to let you down. There's no reason why Roan should be saddled with the hopes and expectations of an entire community when she has plenty of peers who can (and should) be sharing the spotlight.
