He had an Apple II computer and cassette tape player that plugged into a TV on a rolling cart, which is where he taught himself to code by playing video games and reading through manuals. He said an early game of his, coded using Applesoft BASIC, was a text-based adventure game in which players would get lost in a forest and navigate through a maze, answering a series of fork-in-the-road puzzles to chase down the treasure. As a teenager, Tully had a bank of modems at his mom's house to organize a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2016/11/the-lost-civilization-of-dial-up-bulletin-board-systems/506465/">bulletin board system</a> – a pre-internet computer server that other users could dial into – to host pirated video games. After college, Tully gravitated toward startups, becoming a software engineer at the dot-com-era companies iScale and Pillar Data Systems, the latter of which he left in 2003 and was eventually acquired by Oracle. He spent 14 years at Yahoo, working his way up to lead engineering for Yahoo, AOL, and its media properties, which included the Huffington Post, Tumblr, Polyvore, and Flurry, and managing a team of more than 850 people. In 2017, Tully joined data analytics company Splunk as its chief technology officer and senior vice president of product and engineering and managed the company's migration to the cloud. While he loved his team at Splunk, Tully said that he was always interested in the investing side of the tech world, and his interest was further piqued by his wife, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sequoia-partner-jess-lee-advice-for-startup-founders-2022-9">Jess Lee</a>, who has been a partner at Sequoia since 2016. Another of his portfolio companies, AI quality management software startup True Era, was acquired by Snowflake earlier this year. For Tully, finding camaraderie with technical founders has been a winning strategy so far in his VC career. "My background helps me connect with technical founders because they want investors who they can talk shop with," he said. "I've managed teams and have been CTO of a public company." He's also written code as a way to help win over startups in the broader Menlo Ventures portfolio. In 2022, another Menlo partner, Naomi Pilosof Ionita, was working to land a deal for fintech startup Orb. The company didn't have a software development kit, so Tully wrote them one, printed out a link to the devkit, rolled it into a scroll, and delivered it to the startup. That helped seal the deal, and Ionita led Orb's $14 million Series A funding round. While Menlo has been bolstering its portfolio with AI-infrastructure startups, Tully said he's excited about opportunities at the application layer. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Internet-based businesses have grown strongly for most of the past two decades.</li><li>The industry may be entering a new lower-growth phase now. </li></ul>After two decades of mostly unfettered expansion, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/generative-ai-big-tech-responsible-online-content-section-230-2023-12">internet</a>'s biggest businesses are entering a new period of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/startup-extinction-wave-beginning-to-wash-over-cloud-industry-aws-2023-10">slower growth</a>.That's according to Bernstein Research, one of Wall Street's top tech analysis firms."There is a general concern amongst Internet investors that core revenue pools may be approaching saturation, with growth at risk of being structurally lower going forward," Bernstein's Mark Shmulik and Nikhil Devnani wrote in a research note this week on the outlook for 2024 and beyond.<h2>Growth rates halved</h2>The analysts looked at growth rates for four of the largest Internet sectors: <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/5-biggest-ad-industry-surprises-of-2023-2023-12">digital advertising</a>, e-commerce, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/what-is-cloud-computing">cloud computing</a>, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-much-uber-drivers-make-fulltime-cancelling-rides-gig-economy-2023-11">ridesharing</a> and delivery.The expected growth rates for these sectors in 2024 are roughly half the pace of 2019."This debate is perhaps most evident in (though not isolated to) digital advertising, where traditional cuts of the market point to a 70%+ online penetration rate," Shmulik and Devnani said.<h2>Wayfair is not alone</h2>In <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/retail-enters-new-normal-ecommerce-brick-and-mortar-2022-11">e-commerce</a>, market penetration is now over 20%, excluding food, auto sales, and gas. If this sector tops out at 30% to 40% of total retail, that means it's already halfway along the migration curve."It certainly feels like our eCommerce businesses are entering a transition period from new user adoption to retention and re-engagement," the analysts explained, citing Wayfair as an example.That online furniture retailer has an all-time customer base of more than 85 million. That's "a substantial percentage of the total addressable households — meaning the company now has to increasingly rely on re-acquisition to drive customer growth," Shmulik and Devnani wrote."We don't think Wayfair is alone," the analysts added. "We should be prepared for a moderation in growth rates going forward."<h2>Other signs</h2>They cited other signs of a growth slowdown, too.In recent years, several new apps have topped the download charts, suggesting consumers may be tiring of the core internet services they've relied for a decade.And some companies have changed their names and mission statements (Meta and Alphabet), while chasing new tech fades such as web3 and the metaverse with an intensity bordering on desperation.<h2>Turf wars</h2>When there's less growth, big tech companies start looking around at adjacent markets and try butting in on each other's turf.Amazon is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-selling-hyundai-vehicles-though-local-car-dealers-2023-11">starting to sell cars</a>, while going up against Google and Meta in digital advertising.Google is challenging Microsoft and Amazon in cloud computing. Meanwhile, Microsoft actually tried last year to really challenge Google in Search, and Amazon has actually succeeded in eating into Google's Search business.Meta is challenging Apple in consumer hardware, with its Oculus devices. Google has been doing the same in mobile hardware with its Pixel gadgets.In e-commerce, TikTok is trying to grab share from Amazon. Blogger Ben Thompson wrote about "<a target="_blank" href="https://stratechery.com/2014/peak-google/">Peak Google</a>" concerns in 2014. The stock has surged more than five-fold since then. Revenue is more than four times higher now.The internet's underlying markets are "still significant, with demographic and behavioral tailwinds persisting as well," Shmulik and Devnani wrote this week.And while percentage growth rates are low, there are more dollars of revenue being added, they noted.In late October, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy addressed concerns about AWS's lower growth rate by focusing on absolute dollars, rather than percentages."If you look at AWS, we grew 12% year-over-year. And I think that you saw a continued stabilization of our year-over-year growth rate. And that included $919 million of incremental quarter-over-quarter revenue," he said, according to a transcript of Amazon's third-quarter earnings conference call. "As far as we can tell, that also looks like the most absolute growth of any of the players out there."When Big Tech executives start talking about dollar growth, rather than percentages, that's a worrying sign.For one, it shows the law of large numbers kicking in. AWS is so huge now that it's harder to grow revenue at 30% and 40% a year (which AWS has doing just a couple of years ago).But it's also a concern for investors because Amazon has a market value of more than $1.5 trillion these days. That massive valuation is partly supported by expectations of strong future growth — in percentage terms not just dollars.

The country's largest carmaker, which could not produce around 1.7 lakh units last fiscal due to semiconductor shortage, is also coming up with measures to reduce the usage of certain kinds of chips in its cars. "The problem (chip shortage) is a global one..it could affect different models, different companies, different modules differently..all our efforts are to organise supplies through multiple sources," Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) Executive Officer (Corporate Affairs) Rahul Bharti said in an analyst call. He noted that the company is working to do away with certain chips in some models/trims where the requirement is superfluous. "If there is a particular semiconductor in a particular variant of a model which is superfluous and not required..so we are removing all such needs so that our consumption is minimum. All such efforts are going on including negotiations at global scale. Having said that we are still vulnerable to supply side bottlenecks," Bharti noted. When asked about the company position in the ongoing fiscal, he said: "We do not have full year visibility but at least Q1 will be tough and broadly the uncertainty continues." Semiconductors are silicon chips that cater to control and memory functions in products ranging from automobiles, computers and cellphones to various other electronic items. The usage of semiconductors in the auto industry has gone up globally in recent times with new models coming with more and more electronic features such as bluetooth connectivity and driver-assist, navigation and hybrid-electric systems. Replying to a query, Bharti confirmed that the strong hybrid technology introduced in Grand Vitara could be launched in more models. "We have got a very positive response..we plan to bring it (strong hybrid) in more models also," he stated. On sales growth outlook for this fiscal, Bharti said industry body SIAM estimates the passenger vehicle industry to grow between 5-7 per cent. "Maruti Suzuki should grow well beyond this. So we would be better than the industry," he noted. MSI CFO Ajay Seth noted that the company has lined up Rs 8,000 crore capex in the current fiscal with capital set to go into the construction of the Sonipat plant, development of new models and annual maintenance of existing infrastructure. He noted that the company has strengthened its presence in the sports utility vehicle segment with Brezza and Grand Vitara thereby increasing its market share in the vertical. "Moving forward with Jimny and Fronx, the SUV portfolio of the company will be further strengthened. With this the company aims to secure a leadership position in the SUV segment," Seth said. He noted that the company believes in offering products and technologies which are relevant to the Indian market context. 10 jobs that’ll soon disappear as a memory of 2016

Swiss technology firm Logitech has laid off 300 employees amid the challenging global macro-economic environment, the media reported on Thursday. In a major global reorganisation, the maker of computer accessories has decided to cut about 300 jobs, reports People Matters. According to Logitech President and CEO Bracken Darrell, the slump in the business was due to challenging global broader macroeconomic environment and "lower enterprise and consumer spending". Logitech had 8,200 employees as of March 2022. The company has also cut its outlook for the year. "Regrettably, a number of our employees were affecteda by the changes, a company spokesperson was quoted as saying in the report. Logitech's revenue nosedived to $1.3 billion in its fiscal 2023 third quarter, 22 per cent down from a year earlier. "This performance reflects the challenging macroeconomic environment. Category sales declined in both US dollars and constant currency," the company said in January this year. Compared to Q3 of the prior year, Gaming sales declined 16 per cent and video collaboration sales declined 21 per cent. Keyboards and Combos sales declined 22 per cent and pointing devices sales declined 14 per cent. "This reflects consumer purchasing concentrated in promotional weeks throughout the quarter, and lower enterprise and consumer spending," said the company. "These quarterly results reflect the current challenging macroeconomic conditions, including currency exchange rates and inflation, as well as lower enterprise and consumer spending," said Darrell. Logitech's Fiscal Year 2023 outlook has been adjusted to between negative 13-15 per cent negative sales growth in constant currency. He used the same remark when he <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biden-oil-release-lower-gas-prices-stockpile-russia-ukraine-inflation-2022-3">unveiled plans to lower gas prices</a> on March 31. The clause reappeared on Tuesday as Biden cheered his $1 trillion infrastructure plan in New Hampshire, adding it describes "<a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/speeches-remarks/2022/04/19/remarks-by-president-biden-on-investments-in-the-bipartisan-infrastructure-law/">the history of the journey of this country</a>."In many ways, the remark fits the zeitgeist. The <keyword id="11893570" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="economy" source="Orion">economy</keyword> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/march-jobs-report-431000-payrolls-hiring-unemployment-rate-labor-market-2022-3">has recovered nearly all the jobs it lost</a> at the start of the pandemic. Americans are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/consumer-spending-pce-february-inflation-weakens-americans-shopping-spree-2022-3">spending the most they ever have</a>. Wages are <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/employment-cost-index-q4-wage-growth-labor-shortage-job-market-2022-1">rising at an extraordinary pace</a>.But look to some past crises and Biden's promising message falls apart. The remark ignores the many US crises that didn't end in opportunity and instead created new challenges. It also disregards the transcendent rebounds seen in several other countries.The US has a history of staging strong recoveries, but it's not perfect and it's far from the only one to do so.<h2>Not all US crises gave way to opportunity</h2>As far as crisis track records go, America's is strong. The Great Depression gave way to the New Deal. World War II paved the way for one of the greatest economic expansions in US history. The inflation woes of the 1970s and early 1980s led to the economic boom under President Ronald Reagan.Other crises, however, have ended with little in the form of fresh opportunity. The country's escalating involvement in the Vietnam War proved broadly detrimental, with nearly 60,000 US service members killed or missing in action. The peace treaty that led to the US's exit was almost immediately ignored, and full-scale fighting quickly resumed. The last Americans in Saigon were airlifted out of the city as it fell to communist forces.The conflict is widely regarded as one of the biggest military blunders in US history. It also coined the phrase "Vietnam Syndrome," which is still used to describe the American public's aversion to military intervention abroad. Not only did the war's conclusion yield little opportunity, it left the US with tens of thousands dead, its international reputation tarnished, and eroded trust in the federal government.The aftermath of the 9/11 attacks was similarly devoid of fresh opportunity. While optimists may point to a renewed sense of unity immediately after the attacks, 9/11 also revealed and stoked intense Islamophobia around the country. Mosques were destroyed and Muslims were harassed, threatened, and even attacked in the months after the attacks, according to a roundup from the <a href="https://www.splcenter.org/news/2011/03/29/anti-muslim-incidents-sept-11-2001">Southern Poverty Law Center</a>. The attacks also sparked the War on Terror that's since been criticized as unnecessarily long, poorly planned, and <a href="https://www.wilsoncenter.org/article/timeline-the-rise-spread-and-fall-the-islamic-state">a major factor in the formation of ISIS</a>. The invasion of Iraq specifically has come under scrutiny for destabilizing the Middle East and sparking the US military's decades-long presence in the region. The US's occupation of Afghanistan also soured, with forces staying in the country for 21 years and the Taliban taking control of the government as soon as American troops left.Even the US's economic-recovery record is far from perfect. The rebound after the 2008 financial crisis featured a bevy of missteps, from <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/economic-stimulus-outlook-state-local-government-aid-needed-risks-experts-2020-12">insufficient aid for state and local governments</a> to Federal Reserve rate hikes that <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/fed-raised-interest-rates-in-2015-despite-concerns-over-growth-inflation-11610140778">prematurely slowed the labor market's recovery</a>. While lessons learned from the Great Recession have been critical to powering the current recovery, they also detail how unnecessary the plodding recovery of the 2010s was, particularly for low- and middle-income Americans hit hardest by the housing crisis.<h2>The US isn't the only country to turn its crises around</h2>The US's crisis track record isn't just imperfect, it's also far from unique. Several other countries have exhibited similar rebounds after periods of economic and civil upheaval.Among the most transcendent were those that came after World War II. England quickly rebuilt in the wake of mass bombing during the conflict. Reconstruction of the country's capital began immediately after the war ended, and the following years <a href="https://www.mercatus.org/publications/economic-history/economic-recovery-lessons-post-world-war-ii-period">saw the government invest heavily</a> in building new homes, improving services, and developing localities outside London. The UK introduced free healthcare and massively improved public education over the postwar period.Japan exhibited an even bigger turnaround. The Allied air campaign that culminated in the dropping of nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki devastated the country, but the following years saw <a href="https://hbr.org/1998/01/reinterpreting-the-japanese-economic-miracle">an extraordinary recovery</a> shape Japan into the world's third-largest economy after the US and the Soviet Union.The government shifted its economic focus to the production of raw materials like cotton and steel, which saw huge demand as other countries involved in the war pursued their own recoveries. Japan also adopted stringent recruitment measures that boosted female employment and further accelerated the country's growth. The rebound through the late 1940s and 1950s laid the foundation for Japan's role as a modern industrial superpower.South Korea's ascent to economic prosperity offers a more recent example. The country's economy was hammered by the 1997 Asian financial crisis, with gross domestic product shrinking by 5.7% through the following year.Yet South Korea's <a href="https://www.stlouisfed.org/on-the-economy/2018/march/how-south-korea-economy-develop-quickly#:~:text=South%20Korea%20has%20experienced%20one,product%20(GDP)%20in%202016.">shift toward high-technology manufacturing</a> — which began in the early 1990s — powered a stellar rebound throughout the 2000s. Exports of computer chips surged while the country's automotive and shipbuilding industries remained strong. The aftermath of the late-1990s crisis spurred an economic transformation that, in the span of just a few decades, has rapidly elevated South Korea's trade power.The US has repeatedly shown it can bounce back from a crisis stronger than it was. But it's far from the only country to do so, and other nations' rebounds offer similarly valuable lessons in turning downturns into opportunities.
