Doctors in India are grappling to diagnose and treat unexplained and persistent symptoms of <keyword id="9814327" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="long-covid" source="Orion">long Covid</keyword> patients due to limited guidelines, whereas researchers have flagged inadequate studies on the condition. With the <keyword id="19896311" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="world-health-organization" source="keywords">World Health Organization</keyword> declaring an end to <keyword id="19896627" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid" source="keywords">Covid</keyword> as a global <keyword id="416511" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="health-emergency" source="Orion">health emergency</keyword> in May last year, focused efforts are underway around the world to estimate the burden of long Covid among the population. The condition refers to the set of lingering symptoms affecting varied body parts and persisting well beyond the acute Covid infection period, including cough, muscle and joint pain, fatigue, brain fog and difficulty in focusing. The viral disease is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. While studies have suggested that about a third of those moderately or severely infected are likely to suffer from long Covid, region-wise though, incidence could vary. A study by researchers, including those from <keyword id="19988007" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="harvard-medical-school" source="keywords">Harvard Medical School</keyword>, US, estimated that 31 % of the once-infected people in North America, 44% in Europe, and 51% in Asia, have long Covid, which is "challenging the healthcare system, but there are limited guidelines for its treatment". It was published in the International Journal of Infectious Diseases in September. In India, however, studies on long Covid are few and far between. One such study by Maulana Azad Medical College in New Delhi, conducted from May 2022 to March 2023 on 553 patients who had recovered from Covid, found that about 45% had lingering symptoms, persistent fatigue and dry cough being the most common. "There is limited exploratory research on the long Covid syndrome with scarce data on long-term outcomes," the authors wrote in the study published in the journal Cureus in May this year. Understanding the long-term effects of the virus is important for developing management strategies, optimising healthcare delivery, and providing support to recovered Covid patients in the community, they said. Dr Rajesh Sagar, Professor of Psychiatry, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, said, "Looking at the current state of long Covid studies in India, it is too premature to say that we understand the condition well enough to know how to diagnose or treat it." Animesh Samanta, assistant professor at School of Natural Sciences in <keyword id="19897094" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shiv-nadar-university" source="keywords">Shiv Nadar University</keyword>, Greater Noida, said, "While studies in India highlight the growing recognition of neurological complications in long Covid patients, more focused research on neuroinflammation is needed." Doctors, too, have reported a rise in patients complaining of symptoms that they did not have pre-Covid. "People who never had <keyword id="6465125" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="asthma" source="Orion">asthma</keyword> in the past, post-Covid, with every viral infection, they get a long cough, shortness of breath and wheezing, which require the use of <keyword id="31257" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="inhalers" source="Orion">inhalers</keyword> or nebuliser," senior consultant Dr Neetu Jain, who runs a post-Covid care clinic at Pushpawati Singhania Hospital and Research Institute, New Delhi, said. Dr Arun Garg, chairman, Neurology and Neurosciences, Medanta-The Medicity, Gurugram, said he was noticing a spike in stroke cases among young patients not suffering from known risk factors such as diabetes, hypertension and obesity. "Similarly, we are seeing more cases of encephalopathy (swelling of the brain) without reason and having a confused state of mind following one or two days of fever. Their MRI scans show no changes. These patients have increased significantly after Covid," he said. In the absence of medical guidelines to diagnose long Covid, doctors are having to resort to broad, non-specific tests and questionnaires to gauge a patient's 'quality of life'. Studies have shown that the fatigue experienced in long Covid is similar to that in cancer patients, with a quality of life similar to patients of Parkinson's disease. "We really do not have any test to diagnose long Covid, even though it is definitely a clinical diagnosis. We diagnose long Covid for people who had at least moderate to severe infection, following which they could never regain the quality of life pre-Covid. Checking for inflammatory markers like C-reactive proteins (CRP) can support the diagnosis," Dr Jain said. "Other than routine blood tests that measure inflammation, we do antibody tests to look for direct markers. In many of these patients, we are finding rare antibodies which are very new to us and were not there pre-Covid," Dr Garg said. Inflammation persisting despite recovery from acute Covid infection is thought to lie at the heart of long Covid. However, tests to measure this specific immune response are lacking, even as researchers have been working in this direction worldwide. One such effort comes from Shiv Nadar University, where a team led by Samanta has developed a fluorescent probe capable of detecting inflammation in brain cells that can arise due to Covid infection. The probe measures nitric oxide levels in brain cells, especially in human microglia cells, where increased NO levels are linked to the SARS-CoV-2 infection. Microglia are immune cells in the brain that fight disease and help maintain brain health. Lysosomes within microglia, which help clear foreign disease-causing agents like the SARS-CoV-2 virus, produce nitric oxide as part of an immune response to infection. The probe detects nitric oxide produced in lysosomes in response to infection and thereby allows for a measurement of inflammation levels. This examination method can provide "qualitative information on infection status", said Samanta, corresponding author on the study published in the journal Analytical Chemistry in American Chemical Society. He explained that patients with pre-existing conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease or multiple sclerosis (an autoimmune disorder) could exhibit prolonged neuroinflammation and loss of brain cells following Covid infection. While the probe has shown efficacy in cell cultures, animal studies would need to be done, before testing it in humans, Samanta said. Looking at the World Health Organization International Clinical Trials Registry Platform, the study by Harvard Medical School had found that 587 clinical studies were conducted on long Covid, of which about 53% (312) were testing potential treatments. Most of these were found to be conducted in the US (58), followed by India (55) and Spain (20). The trials looked at interventions including physical exercise, psychotherapy, and pharmacological ones such as paxlovid and fluvoxamine. However, "to date, only 11 of these 312 studies have published their results that were not confirmative," the researchers wrote. The team called for studies to look into sleep disorders which were rarely included in the registered clinical studies. Further, interventions targeting the biological processes responsible for long Covid are needed but currently lacking, they said.

As per the advisory, several vulnerabilities have been found in the <keyword id="6355629" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="google" source="Orion">Google</keyword> <keyword id="30001" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="chrome" source="Orion">Chrome</keyword> browser that could be exploited by a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the targeted system. Google has already released a fix for these vulnerabilities in its latest software update for Chrome and it is highly advisable that Google Chrome users upgrade to the latest version soon. According to Google, 22 types of security fixes have been given in the latest Chrome browser, which works to increase user privacy. The government advisory as well as Google advised Chrome users to update to the latest version. Google recently updated the Chrome stable channel to 96.0.4664.93 for Windows, Mac and Linux, which is available for all users. In an advisory, CERT-In said, "Multiple vulnerabilities exists in Google chrome due to Type Confusion in V8; Use after free in web apps, UI, window manager, screen capture, file API, auto fill and developer tools; Incorrect security UI in autofill; Heap buffer overflow in extensions, BFCache and ANGLE; Type Confusion in loader; Insufficient data validation in loader; Integer underflow in ANGLE and Insufficient validation of untrusted input in new tab page." Overall, it is more about translating thoughts into actions. But the new contender that has emerged boasts the groundbreaking ability to decode <keyword id="21664602" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="internal-speech" source="keywords">internal speech</keyword>. The first to successfully identify words spoken entirely within the mind, this study marks a significant leap forward in <keyword id="21664603" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BCI-technology" source="keywords">BCI technology</keyword>. Researchers implanted tiny electrodes in the brains of two participants to capture their brain activity as they silently "said" specific words. The words silently spoken were decoded with an accuracy of 79% in one of the participants. While the accuracy of the mind-reading was impressive for one participant (79%), it was much lower for the other (23%). This difference might be because the second person's brain used different areas (sub-areas) to process silent speech, with some brain cells firing more for specific words like "spoon" or "swimming". Scientists believe these results show that people don't all think in the same way, and this could explain why the BCI worked better for one person than the other. The ability to decode internal speech offers a unique advantage. However, the new study's limited vocabulary and the fact that it only worked effectively for one participant highlight the need for further research. Additionally, questions remain about how the technology would function in people who haven't been able to speak for extended periods. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Tesla's Autopilot team in Buffalo, New York reviews footage to train its driver-assist software.</li><li>The workers label everything from road lines to traffic cones.</li></ul>This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with a <a target="_blank" rel="" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-history-founders">Tesla</a> employee who spoke anonymously to protect their privacy. Business Insider has verified their identity and employment and corroborated their claims during our reporting on <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-autopilot-fsd-labeling-facilities-jobs-2024-9">Tesla's Autopilot facilities</a>. The following has been edited for length and clarity.I started at Tesla's factory in Buffalo, New York in 2022. I didn't have any automotive or manufacturing experience before I began working on the Autopilot project.My job is to help train Tesla's vehicles to drive themselves. A Tesla has 9 different cameras that collect data the Autopilot team goes through in order to teach the Full Self-Driving and Autopilot software how to drive like a human.I spend hours everyday going over videos that were taken from customer cars and Tesla's in-house test drivers. We label every little thing — from making sure a car doesn't try to drive on the shoulder of the road to telling it how to react when a lane is closed due to construction or when there's a four-way stop sign.Within the program there are many different little projects that are all combined to create the greater Full Self-Driving and Autopilot experience. We work on hyper-focused projects that can last for weeks or months. For example, you could spend months labeling road lines or teaching the vehicle how to respond to different weather conditions, like how to identify snow banks and operate when there's snow covering lane markings.<h2 id="b92909a9-464d-4d88-9d14-13428ace54f2">I've seen clips from all over the world — and some accidents as well</h2>Sometimes Tesla's cameras will capture accidents that happen nearby. It can be difficult to watch, but as soon as we run across one, we flag it to a supervisor.When I first started at Tesla, it was <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-autopilot-fsd-labeling-facilities-jobs-2024-9">common for people to share clips</a> around the office, usually just odd things they saw. But, one worker took it too far. He shared a clip of a little boy who'd been hit by a Tesla while riding his bike. I thought that was sadistic.Tesla cracked down on image sharing and what we could access after <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.reuters.com/technology/tesla-workers-shared-sensitive-images-recorded-by-customer-cars-2023-04-06/">Reuters</a> published a story on it. They essentially told us "If you're caught once, that's your ticket out the door."After that, you <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-autopilot-fsd-labeling-facilities-jobs-2024-9">couldn't access images</a> outside of your allocated team folder anymore, and Tesla put watermarks on some of the images so you could easily tell where it came from, if it was redistributed. Sometimes people still pass images around the office, especially if it's something out of the ordinary, but it doesn't happen as often.There is something very strange about having this very intimate view into someone's life. It feels odd to see someone's daily drive, but it's also an important part of correcting and refining the program.<h2 id="699f1498-b16a-41f8-a788-931735cc4297">At the same time, we're under our own microscope</h2>Anytime we're making key clicks on the computer, Tesla knows what we're doing. There are <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-autopilot-fsd-labeling-facilities-jobs-2024-9">cameras basically everywhere</a> we work so the only place you can really get any privacy is in the bathroom.We review about five and a half to six hours of footage per day. It can be very hard to focus. You can get in this kind of fog when you're just watching clip after clip and it can be difficult to keep yourself sane.Tesla gives us a 15-minute break and a 30-minute lunch break, but you have to time it perfectly because of Tesla's employee monitoring software: Flide Time. It <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-autopilot-fsd-labeling-facilities-jobs-2024-9">tracks keystrokes</a> and how long we're working on the images, which can make it tricky. To properly label some of the clips you have to use outside resources. So you'll have to go out of the labeling system to review traffic laws or Tesla's labeling policies, but anytime you're not clicking around in the software program, it tracks you as if you aren't working and it basically sets off an alarm to your superiors.If you don't hit Flide Time — even if you were five minutes off — the next day, you will end up in a disciplinary meeting with a team lead and you'd get a point put against your record. You could be fired, if you get three points in the span of six months.I've gotten in trouble for missing Flide Time. They bring you into a separate office and ask: "Why didn't you make any changes to the software program for 15 minutes?" You could basically get fired for spending too long in the bathroom.There's definitely a feeling that we're just worker ants.When we had concerns they were often brushed off. There were some times we were <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-autopilot-fsd-labeling-facilities-jobs-2024-9">told to ignore</a> "No Turn on Red" or "No U-Turn" signs. Those were the kind of things that made me and my coworkers uncomfortable. In some cases, they would hear us out, but other times the general response was along the lines of "Mind your business and your pay grade."My experience at Tesla has been different than I'd thought it would be when I started. Mumbai, <keyword id="19930381" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="volvo-car-india" source="keywords">Volvo Car India</keyword> on Monday said it has restructured its management team headed by <keyword id="19930380" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jyoti-malhotra" source="keywords">Jyoti Malhotra</keyword> through both internal role changes as well as external talent acquisition. The exercise carried out over the past few months is aimed to secure long-term strategic transformation and direct-to-consumer online sales, Volva Car <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword> said. It is a subsidiary of Swedish luxury carmaker Volvo Cars. Volvo Car India rejigs management team

The government on Wednesday said personal data of 20 WhatsApp users out of the 121 users targeted using <keyword id="8277445" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="pegasus-spyware">Pegasus spyware</keyword> may have been accessed by the attacker. Facebook-owned Whatsapp had said that Indian journalists and human rights activists were among those globally spied upon by unnamed entities using Pegasus <keyword id="48511" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Spyware">spyware</keyword>. "WhatsApp continues to review the available information. It also mentioned that WhatsApp believes it is likely that personal data within the WhatsApp app of approximately twenty users may have been accessed out of approximately one hundred and twenty one users in India whose devices the attacker attempted to reach," Prasad said in Lok Sabha.
 On May 20, WhatsApp reported an incident to country's cyber security watchdog Cert-In, stating that it had identified and promptly fixed a vulnerability that could enable an attacker to insert and execute code on mobile devices. 
 WhatsApp also told CERT-In that the vulnerability could no longer be exploited to carry out attacks.
 Prasad said the government is committed to protect fundamental rights of citizens, including the right to privacy.
 "The government operates strictly as per provisions of law and laid down protocols. There are adequate safeguards to ensure that no innocent citizen is harassed or his privacy breached," he said.
 In response to another question on malicious mobile apps stealing user data, the minister said the propagation of such applications, targeting mobile phones, are being reported globally.
 "Such malicious applications could be used for stealing data from infected mobile phones for further misuse by cyber criminals," Prasad said.
 The government has taken several measures to check malicious apps which includes issue of alerts and advisories about threats and vulnerabilities affecting mobile phones, along with countermeasures by the <keyword id="866184" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Computer-Emergency-Response-Team">Indian Computer Emergency Response Team</keyword> (CERT-In), he said. "Security tips have been published to enable users to secure their mobile and smart phones by CERT-In.
