<ul class="summary-list"><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/tesla">Tesla</a> recently offered <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/tesla-model-3">Model 3</a> owners a software upgrade to enhance the performance of the long-range version of the car.</li><li>The upgrade costs $2,000 and drops the 0-60mph speed to 3.9 seconds from 4.4 seconds.</li><li>That's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/bmw">BMW</a> M3 territory, for a car that isn't even Tesla's top-spec performance model.</li><li>Comparing the two, I'm impressed by the Model 3's extra straight-line speed, but I'd still take the costlier M3 as a driver's car.</li><li><a href="http://newsletter.businessinsider.com/join/4np/shiftinggears">Sign up for Business Insider's transportation newsletter, Shifting Gears, to get more stories like this in your inbox</a>.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul><p>It's become alarmingly fashionable to compare the Tesla Model 3 with other luxury sedans, especially BMWs. </p><p>The basis for these comparisons is to suggest that Tesla has begun a process of "conquesting" its "competitors'" customers. This provides Tesla's boosters with the math they need to predict Tesla sales increases, which to grow in the US market in particular would need to capture market share from brands such as BMW, Mercedes, Audi, and Lexus.</p><p>I don't think that math makes sense. But Tesla recently offered a  acceleration upgrade to its long-range, dual-motor Model 3, the second-highest-performing variant of the car. The 0-60mph time has, according to Tesla, dropped to 3.9 seconds from 4.4 seconds. The cost to the owners would be $2,000.</p><p>(The Performance trim offers a 0-60 mph time of 3.2 seconds.)</p><p>Forgetting for a moment the in-app-purchases aspect of this - Tesla owners might at some level feel like their vehicle is more like a video game than a vehicle - I thought that it would be reasonable to run a straight-up comparo of the long-range Model 3 and a similarly quick bimmer, the M3.</p><p>We're currently between M3 editions; the outgoing car was retired in 2018, but the new 3-Series has launched, and we should see a successor M3 next year.</p><p>Here's how the upgraded Model 3 long-range and the M3 stack up:</p><p class="tagline"><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/intelligence/future-of-retail?IR=T&amp;itm_source=businessinsider&amp;itm_medium=ctgr_bii&amp;itm_term=ctgr_leadgen&amp;itm_content=tesla&amp;itm_campaign=future-of-retail-2"></a></p>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><ul class="summary-list"><li>A decade ago, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/tesla">Tesla</a> was selling one car, the original Roadster, and barely staying in business.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/porsche">Porsche</a> has been around for over 80 years and is a motoring legend.</li><li>But in just 10 years, Tesla's cars are routinely compared with Porsche's first all-electric effort, the Taycan.</li><li>That's absolutely stunning.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul><p>Porsche <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/porsche-reveals-taycan-turbo-and-taycan-turbo-s-production-model-2019-9">officially launched its first all-electric vehicle, the Taycan</a>. The car has been much-anticipated, and invariably has also been compared with Tesla's offerings. You've seen the headlines: "Tesla Killer" and so on.</p><p>The German automaker put together some early media drives in Norway, and so far the reviewers have been impressed if not staggered by the devout Porsche-ness of the Taycan.</p><p>But they've also done what they've had to do, which is bring up Tesla as the Taycan's precursor and chief competitor.</p><p>In The Wall Street Journal, the <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/can-porsche-beat-tesla-with-its-new-taycan-ev-11569431047">redoubtable Dan Neil enthused over the Taycan Turbo</a> (there's also a faster and more expensive Turbo S, and no, the Taycan doesn't have turbocharged electric motors - that's just how Porsche ranks its vehicles within the brand's nomenclature). But Neil had to bring up the supercar-fast Tesla Model S P100D and label it the EV champ that the Taycan is taking on.</p><p><em><strong>Read more:</strong> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-model-s-vs-porsche-taycan-who-wins-no-contest-2019-9">In the battle of the Tesla Model S and the Porsche Taycan, it's really no contest</a></em></p><p>Maybe this seems perfectly natural, if all you know of the automotive realm is Tesla and Toyota. Cars are cars. A-to-B machines. Most run on gas. Tesla's run on electrons. You're aware of this at least.</p><h2>The King of Petrolandia</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p>But in the land of petrol, Porsche is a king - and arguably the finest car maker on the planet. The 911 sports car has been in production since the 1960s and is considered by many if not most to be the best go-fast ride that money can buy. Meanwhile, Porsche basically invented the luxury sport SUV market in the early 2000s with the stunningly good Cayenne. The Panamera sedan has its detractors, but there's no debating the cumulative impact of the Porsche portfolio: the profit margins are the envy of the industry.</p><p>Sports cars are irrational; just ask anybody who has ever owned a Ferrari. But Porsche captures hearts <em>and</em> minds. It might lack the overtly flamboyant fizz of a Lamborghini, but a Porsche is probably the car you'd choose if you had to drive for your life.</p><p>Enter Tesla, which has existed for about 15 years (Porsche has been around for 88). When Elon Musk's company started out, it was selling a single car, and not very many of them: the original Roadster, with volumes in three-digit territory. It was an undeniably cool car, but it was a curiosity. </p><p>Matters got more serious in 2012, when the clean-sheet-design Model S sedan arrived. But still, Tesla has been seriously manufacturing its own vehicles for about ten years. If you round up.</p><p>For comparison, cars such as the Ford Mustang (born in 1965) and the Chevy Corvette (born in 1953) have established Porsche-beating credibility in just their most recent iterations, when Ford and Chevy decided that they should be capable of challenging Europe's best.</p><p><strong><em>See also:</em></strong><em> </em><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ignition-transportation"><em>Apply here to attend IGNITION: Transportation, an event focused on the future of transportation, in San Francisco on October 22</em></a><em>.</em></p><h2>The car business isn't hard - it's impossible</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p>Ask anybody in the car business if the business is hard and they'll look at you as if you had a second head. It isn't hard. It's <em>impossible.</em> The destiny of aspiring car makers, almost uniformly, is to fail. See Tucker. See Fisker. Even relative legends struggle: Aston Martin has gone bankrupt seven times. </p><p>Tesla hasn't just not gone bankrupt (despite being close in 2008) - it's become Porsche's biggest rival for the future of driving, at least according to some.</p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-model-s-vs-porsche-taycan-who-wins-no-contest-2019-9">I actually don't think Tesla and Porsche are rivals in any meaningful sense</a>. But there's no avoiding the discourse. When the word "Taycan" is uttered these days, the world "Tesla" typically follows.</p><p>Remarkable. </p><p>Generally speaking, it's possible for niche players to steal mindshare from industry icons. Since 1992, Horacio Pagani has built his eponymous exotic nameplate into a brand that's talked about as a modern-day Ferrari or Lamborghini - and in the estimation of some pundits, builds more compelling cars. Likewise Sweden's Koenigsegg, founded in 1994.</p><p>But those guys make bonkers supercars that sell in minuscule quantities and cost lots and lots of money. Tesla, meanwhile, isn't simply aiming to top vehicles such as the $100,000-plus Taycan with the $100,000-plus Model S trims; it also wants to take on Porsche's parent, the VW Group, in the mass-market.</p><p>In that, success has been mixed. The relatively new Model 3 endured a fraught debut, but it did help the company to sell nearly 250,000 vehicles in 2018, a record. Tesla now dominates the EV market worldwide (don't get too excited - the worldwide EV market is tiny). Managing the situation is Tesla main concern. And that makes the reflexive Porsche comparos all the more remarkable. Because Porsche cares not one bit about the mass market. You settle for a Corolla. But you dream of a 911.</p><p>Or perhaps a Taycan. </p><p>That's Tesla. In 2009, a one-car company. In 2019, a worthy opponent for Porsche. Tesla has indeed come a long way, baby. In 10 years, Tesla has gone from a one-car company to being compared with Porsche - here's why that's incredible

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Chevrolet</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>While we wait for Tesla's mass-market Model 3 to arrive sometime in late 2017, we can start to mull over the Chevy Bolt - a 238-mile-range electric vehicle, stickering for $29,995 after credits - that's heading to dealerships in California and Oregon before 2016 is in the record books.</p><p>Motor Trend took things a step further recently and conducted a head-to-head comparison between the Model 3 and the Tesla Model S 60, at $66,000 the cheapest Tesla one can currently get.</p><p>It wasn't a fair comparison, and Motor Trend admitted as much, but the idea was to see if Chevy's new EV could match up against the premier 200-plus-mile electric car in the market.</p><p>And match up it did, so much so that Motor Trend concluded that the Model S isn't necessarily worth $30,000 more (the well-optioned Bolt they tested came it at just over $40,000). That doesn't mean you shouldn't buy a Tesla - it's just that the Bolt offers a very competitive and cheaper, non-luxury alternative.</p><p>More importantly, MT decided the Bolt is so good that it beats every other short-range EV currently in the market. It's a game-changer.</p><p><span>"More than any EV that's come before it, the Bolt makes emissions-free, environmentally friendly <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="transportation">transportation</keyword> a realistic proposition for millions of Americans," MT's Christian Seabaugh wrote. </span></p><p><span>"It has made the current crop of pricey, short-range electric cars from BMW, Nissan, and others utterly irrelevant."</span></p><p><span>You can read the entire comparo <a href="http://www.motortrend.com/cars/chevrolet/bolt-ev/2017/2017-chevrolet-bolt-ev-vs-2016-tesla-model-s-60/">here</a>. Motor Trend: The Chevy Bolt makes most other electric cars 'utterly irrelevant'

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>The Drive</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Down deep, most car people are magazine people. <br /><br />Even in the digital age, the majority of auto journalists now working revere a pre-digital time when Car &amp; Driver, Road &amp; Track, and Motor Trend created a world of motor-heady enthusiasm mixed with stylish writing.</p><p>Times change, however. Media has moved online decisively, and automotive journalism needs to adjust.</p><p>The Golden Age of print-auto writing may have faded, but the U.S. car market is better than it has been in a decade. That's why Time Inc. just launched a new site, <a href="http://www.thedrive.com/">The Drive</a>.</p><p>It's a risky proposition and a big bet on new media by and old-media company. Previous digital ventures in the auto-journalism space have been scrappy: Jalopnik started out with a small group of oddball car guys and some modest support from Gawker Media. Autoblog was equally bloggy and small-time until it was bought by AOL, but even now, it retains its bloggy, obsessive spirit.</p><p>The Drive, by contrast, is launching this week with a roster of heavy hitters from the media and auto-writing world, including Lawrence Ulrich, who made his bones behind the wheel for the New York Times; and A.J. Baime, who wrote a great book about a legendary race, "Go Like Hell: Ford, Ferrari, and Their Battle for Speed and Glory at Le Mans."</p><p>The site will also, in contemporary startup fashion, be occupying space in Brooklyn, far from the Time-Life citadel in Manhattan. There will reportedly be a garage, optimized for video production and seeking to create the kind of automotive content that appeals to a generation <em>not</em> raised on Motor Trend's printed comparos but on Motor Trend's YouTube channel - and re-runs of "Top Gear."</p><h2>New York state of mind</h2><p>I dropped by Time-Life this week to chat with both The Drive's editor, Mike Guy (formerly of Maxim, and on the phone from the Frankfurt Motor Show) and Matt Bean, <span>SVP of Editorial Innovation at Time Inc. There were two big takeways.</span></p><p><span>First, The Drive is going to have a strong New York flavor. This is a micro-trend in the car business: the resurgence of New York as a place where people care about cars. Cadillac recently moved its sales and operations to New York and has be re-branding itself as a luxury car maker closely connected with New York in all its fashionable, gritty glory. <br /><br />The Driver is aiming for something similar, defying the long-held belief that car publications need to be based in either Detroit or Southern California (the former for the industry, the latter for the weather and the roads).</span></p><p><span>This links The Drive with the Car &amp; Driver on the 1960s and '70s - they're packaging what Car &amp; Driver did during the heyday of writers and editors like Brock Yates and P.J. O'Rourke for a much younger audience. <br /><br />Car &amp; Driver was a very cool car magazine that was written by people who were under the sway of the New Journalism, which was headquartered in New York (Car &amp; Driver decamped for Michigan in 1978 and no one has ever forgiven them). The Drive is designed to explore the New Journalism of now: dynamic digital storytelling.</span></p><p><span>Jalopnik tried to do something like this when it started out in the mid-2000s, blending snappy sentences with an compulsive desire to embrace the Internet's meme-making machine. Jalopnik continues to feature very stylish and opinionated writers in the auto-blogosphere, but The Drive is pushing the revival of this type of car writing in a much better capitalized, less outsider-y direction.</span></p><p><span>Second, The Drive is going to stress a throwback affection for words.</span></p><p><span>Will it work? Well, The Drive does check some boxes. It has a feed for up-to-the-minute automotive news, and it also isn't shying away from big, high-impact visual features. In digital car coverage it's extremely important to <em>show the cars. </em>And the showing won't be limited to photos. There will be video and lots of it.</span></p><h2><span>Creative car writing</span></h2><p><span>What's interspersed with that is a slightly mixed bag at the moment. <a href="http://www.thedrive.com/article/144/cadillac-ats-v-checkmate-for-bmws-bahn-burning-m3">Ulrich's review of the Cadillac ATS-V</a>, a 464-horsepower sports coupe intended to steal share from BMW, is punchy and thrusty and authoritative, if not really groundbreaking. <br /><br />But there is this line: "<span>Once you've snuggled into the Caddy's rib-sticking Recaro buckets, caressed the faux-suede steering wheel and toggled that shifter, you're fresh out of interior talking points." <br /><br />Those are fun words to read, for sure.</span></span></p><p><span><span><a href="http://www.thedrive.com/article/198/the-ford-shelby-gt350-mustang-is-an-8-cylinder-kick-in-the-nuts">Baime's </a>take on the new Ford Shelby GT350 Mustang is ripped from the track - Laguna Seca in California - but a tad workmanlike in execution. <br /><br /> "Th<span>ere are but a few perfect moments in life," Baime writes. "All your senses become electrified, and you feel like you can see the world and where you fit into it with immaculate clarity. This moment is called </span><em>ecstasy."</em></span></span></p><p><span><span>Guy <a href="http://www.thedrive.com/article/144/cadillac-ats-v-checkmate-for-bmws-bahn-burning-m3">shows off some chops at the keyboard</a>, with his investigation of the new Mazda MX-5 Miata. <br /><br />"[T]<span>he Mazda eagerly pursues its limits at speeds that don't threaten your license, life or limb," he writes. "It's a glider, not a fighter. As it does on track, where skilled owners routinely embarrass rookies in more powerful cars, the Mazda rewards those who can carry momentum through curves."</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>Writer-large-Brett Burke deliveries some elegant comparisons, <a href="http://www.thedrive.com/article/161/heavy-breathing-in-the-ferrari-488-gtb">in response to a drive of the new Ferrari 488 GTB</a>. "<span>Flooring a Bugatti Veyron pulverizes your senses. Flooring a Lamborghini Aventador terrorizes them. Flooring the 488 releases a flood of endorphins, fight </span><em>and</em><span> flight.</span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>The Drive</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span>And <a href="http://www.thedrive.com/article/208/how-to-get-dumped-and-crash-a-bmw-5-series">Max Prince's post </a>about wrecking his 1997 BMW contains this: "<span>Just before winter, I had a drag-out argument with my then-girlfriend, mostly because she didn't realize we were dating. On the drive home, I listened to Tom Waits and thought about buying a piano. Unrequited love is a bitch. So are dump trucks." <br /><br />Prince is a senior editor at The Drive, and that kind of prose mainlines what senior eds at Car &amp; Driver routinely produced, lightly gonzo with a healthy dash of self-deprecation.</span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span>But the real tell that The Drive is spiritually connected to the car writing of the '60s and '70s comes from <a href="http://www.thedrive.com/article/195/mario-andretti-and-the-brutal-magic-of-monza">a standout feature from racing legend Mario Andretti</a> about the tragic glory of his first Formula 1 World Championship in 1978 (he was the last American to pull this off), when he won the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, but lost his friend Ronnie <span>Peterson to injuries sustained in a crash. The best car publications always reserve space to remind us that the men and women who race cars are miles above anyone who merely writes about cars. The Drive is no different.</span></span></span></span></p><h2><span><span><span><span>Bucking a trend</span></span></span></span></h2><p><span><span><span><span>The site is bucking at least one online-media trend, simply because it's so big (its launching with dozens of stories, after being in stealth mode for months). This makes it a fully fledged play for a large audience, rather than an attempt to capture a niche readership, something that enthusiast sites like Hodinkee have done for watch nuts and that numerous men's style blogs have done for classic menswear and heritage made-in-USA products. </span></span></span></span></p><p>Guy and Bean are optimistic that the readers will come and come in force. And at launch, they've certainly made good on giving those readers something to read. <br /><br />It remains to be seen whether that aspect of The Drive will survive.
