<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="6360409" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Nasa">NASA</keyword> plans to use its <keyword id="177115" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Orion">Orion</keyword> spacecraft to fly astronauts to the moon.</li><li>But first, engineers have to figure out how to make the capsule's <keyword id="6361668" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="TOILET">toilet</keyword> less stinky.</li><li>A model of the toilet is launching to the <keyword id="6382020" type="LOCATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="international-space-station">International Space Station</keyword> on Thursday night, where astronauts will test it out.</li></ul><p>On Thursday evening, NASA is sending a new, $23 million toilet to the International <keyword id="41531" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="space">Space</keyword> Station. </p><p>It's meant as a test: Astronauts on the ISS will test the toilet out before NASA installs an upgraded version on its Orion spaceship, which is slated to fly a crew to the moon as early as 2023. </p><p>Called the Universal Waste Management System (UWMS), the toilet is designed to be <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/feature/boldly-go-nasa-s-new-space-toilet-offers-more-comfort-improved-efficiency-for-deep-space/">easier for women to use</a> than prior space toilets. It's also made of strong metals that can withstand a highly acidic solution that NASA uses to treat astronauts' urine. </p><p>But Jason Hutt, the Orion spaceship's engineering lead, said there's still one kink with the UWMS: It's too stinky.</p><p>"If you want to recreate that used spacecraft smell, take a couple dirty diapers, some microwave food wrappers, a used airsickness bag, and a few sweaty towels, put them in an old-school metal trash can, and let it bake in the summer sun for 10 days," Hutt <a href="https://twitter.com/jhutt75/status/1295712066842644483">wrote on Twitter in August</a>. "Then open the kid and breathe deep."</p><h2><strong>Astronauts' pee could float in space forever</strong></h2><div type="image" title="orion test" height="693" width="1041" msid="78285426" hostid="261"></div><p>On the space station, the UWMS is slated to be installed next to one of the current ISS toilets. Though it's a demo model, the toilet is expected to stay on the station and be used there indefinitely. </p><p>Because there's no gravity in space to help flush waste downward, the UWMS uses motorized fans to suction away astronauts' urine and feces. On Orion, their poop would remain stored away until the ship returns to Earth. But there won't be room to store pee, and the spaceship can't recycle it into water the way the space station can —there's not enough space for a filtration system.</p><p>So the plan is for Orion astronauts to vent their pee into space, where it could float frozen forever (the temperature is -455 degrees Fahrenheit).</p><p>NASA has vented astronauts' pee into space before — the Space Shuttle toilet did the same thing. But during those flights, the urine froze onto the vent. This time, engineers are adding heaters into the system to prevent immediate freezing. </p><p>Because weight requirements for anything launching off of Earth are extremely strict, all space toilets have to be lightweight. But relying on small motors for powerful suction forces them to work hard. That means they're noisy. Because Orion is mostly made of aluminum alloy – it's "a big aluminum can," Hutt Business Insider – the noise of the toilet's whirring fans, clicking valves, and clanking machinery machine will reverberate throughout the ship. </p><p>But there's an upside: The loud sound gives toilet some privacy, since Orion's bathroom has only a thin door.</p><h2><strong>Astronauts can't use Febreze </strong></h2><div type="image" title="orion toilet mockup" height="838" width="628" msid="78285428" hostid="261"></div><p>Because Orion is only the length of a small powerboat and must house four waste-expelling adults for nearly a month, its toilet has to be compact and relatively odorless. The prospect of storing human waste for weeks at a time also requires engineers to figure out ways to tamp down the stench. </p><p>Engineers have nailed the first two elements, but are struggling with the third, Hutt said.  </p><p>"Odor is really caused by the chemical compounds released from human waste breaking through the filter that's supposed to remove those compounds," he said. </p><p>Of course, any filters NASA uses must also be light and compact.</p><p>If odors do escape, astronauts have very few options to combat them.</p><p>"You can't just open a window whenever something smells bad," Hutt said.</p><p>NASA also can't allow chemical deodorizers, like Febreze, on spacecraft — they would pollute the air too quickly, potentially harming the astronauts inside. Plus, pressurized canisters aren't allowed given the risk they could explode. </p><p>"Spaceflight has its share of bumps, and we don't want anything in the cabin that could become a hazard," Hutt said.</p><p>So his team has been testing many potential deodorizer options. The tests require human noses, so NASA has "certified sniffers" at its <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/centers/wstf/index_new.html">White Sands Test Facility in New Mexico</a>. True to their title, these employees are paid to smell the toilets after they've been used to evaluate whether odor-control measures are working.</p><p>These sniffers are the "unsung heroes of the space program," Hutt said. </p><p>So far, the safest deodorizer the team has experimented with is activated charcoal, a powdered charcoal that absorbs odors without requiring electricity or chemicals. I was pleasantly surprised by the ease of use, shorter cooking times, and of course, delicious results.</strong></li></ul><p>Everyone loves a heaping pile of fried onion rings, fried chicken, and even fried veggies, but it's no secret how unhealthy it is to eat food drenched in fatty oils and unwanted calories. What are we supposed to do though - never enjoy the crunch of a crisp French fry or taste of breaded chicken sandwich? That's absurd.</p><p>I prep my dinners every Sunday in an effort to stay out of my tiny kitchen (and out of the way of my three roommates) and make my evening dinners run smoother. Personally, I love roasting vegetables in the oven to achieve a crunchy, crispy texture, but the only way I can do that is to toss them in olive oil. And although olive oil contains healthy fat (monounsaturated fatty acids), I'm guilty of a heavy pour and don't always feel the best after eating my supposedly healthy foods drenched in oil. In an effort to make better choices and stop soaking my food - especially my veggies - in oil, I decided to try air frying with the <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07JBLY2D2/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=biip_042219_cuisinart-afr-25-compact-airfryer-review-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B07JBLY2D2&amp;linkId=d3e47a23d9810f1af8e22ac9591f09b3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cuisinart AFR-25 Compact AirFryer (currently $98.99 from Amazon)</a>.</p><h2>What is air frying?</h2><p>Air frying isn't the newest trend in the kitchen world and I know a lot of people who have wonderful things to say about it, but it's totally new to me and I've never tried out the technique myself. </p><p>According to <a href="https://www.thekitchn.com/how-do-air-fryers-work-265185" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Kitchn</a>, an air fryer works similarly to that of a convection oven. An air fryer will use a heating element and a fan to move air very quickly in a circular-motion around the food you're "frying.<span style="color: #000000;">" This quick movement of air works its way around all sides of the food to not only cook thoroughly, but create a crispy edge. </span></p><p>But there are several features that make them totally different than your <em>regular</em> oven, which surrounds your food with hot air but doesn't circulate the air inside the unit. First, air fryers usually contain a standard frying basket. This perforated surface is key to ensuring your food is in constant contact with the swirling hot air. Second, air fryers are much smaller than a typical oven which helps intensify the direct cooking and crisping process. Third, due to the high speed of circulation paired with the smaller cooking space, air fryers can cook food in a shorter amount of time.</p><p>It should be noted that air frying is not the same as frying with oil - for obvious and not-so-obvious reasons. <a href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/fry" target="_blank" rel="noopener">By definition</a>, frying requires a pan, heat, and fat, but with an air fryer, all you need is heat. That means I cook things like asparagus, sweet potatoes, Brussels sprouts, and zucchini every week, and with a lot of oil. This past weekend, I decided to air fry a weeks' worth of sweet potatoes, asparagus, and Brussels sprouts to see if I could achieve the same texture and satisfaction without using oil. </p><p>The <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07JBLY2D2/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=biip_042219_cuisinart-afr-25-compact-airfryer-review-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B07JBLY2D2&amp;linkId=d3e47a23d9810f1af8e22ac9591f09b3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cuisinart AFR-25 Compact AirFryer</a> fit perfectly on our peninsula counter and gave me plenty of room to cut veggies directly in front of the unit, which saved me from having to move from one small patch of counter space to another.</p><p>The manual came with a small cookbook filled with recipes. As I read through them, I noticed the company recommended using an olive oil spray to coat the frying basket prior to adding your food. Most of the recipes also give you the option to drizzle about half of a tablespoon of olive oil on your food, but since I was trying to cook oil-free, I opted not to. </p><p>From there, all I had to do was refer to the recipes for cooking temperatures and times and season my veggies as I pleased (my go-to is salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder). The one thing I found tricky was that the seasonings had nothing to stick to since I didn't use oil, so a good portion of my precious garlic powder fell onto the drip pan below. Because of this, I decided to line the drip pan with aluminum foil for easy cleanup later.</p><p>After that, I went ahead with the actual air frying. I was happy to learn that instead of needing to cook my sweet potatoes for 20 to 25 minutes, they were done in 15 minutes. The little bit of spray I used kept everything from sticking too, which I was happy about when it came time for cleaning. </p><p>So what did everything taste like? Each vegetable I made had a crispy exterior with a soft interior. The tips of my asparagus crunched the same like a potato chip without feeling like they were dried out and fragile. Similarly, both the sweet potatoes and Brussels sprouts were crispy on the outside and moist on the inside.</p><p>Like I mentioned before, it was obvious that I didn't use oil to prepare these veggies like I have done in the past. They lacked that saturated texture and oil taste, but that didn't correlate to a lack of flavor at all. The $100 Cuisinart AirFryer makes crispy vegetables without additional oil - I ate fried veggies for a week and didn't notice a difference in taste or texture

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="6360409" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Nasa">NASA</keyword> stowed a solar-powered <keyword id="46492" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="helicopter">helicopter</keyword> in the belly of its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-perseverance-mars-rover-helicopter-search-for-alien-life-2020-7">Perseverance rover</a>, set to land on <keyword id="47638" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mars">Mars</keyword> on February 18.</li><li>The helicopter, called <keyword id="2459491" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="ingenuity">Ingenuity</keyword>, aims to conduct the first-ever controlled flights on another planet.</li><li>Ingenuity and Perseverance will both record video as the drone flies over an ancient Martian lakebed.</li></ul><p>A space helicopter is speeding toward Mars, tucked in the belly of NASA's new Perseverance rover.</p><p>Perseverance will be NASA's fifth rover to Mars, but its miniature-helicopter stowaway - called Ingenuity - will be the first spacecraft of its kind.</p><p>The robots are set to land in an ancient Martian lakebed called Jezero Crater, where Perseverance may find signs of alien life, on February 18. A few months after landing, the rover is programmed to lower Ingenuity to the Martian surface, back away, and watch as the tiny drone carries out a series of test flights.</p><p>If successful, these will be the first controlled flights ever conducted on another planet.</p><p>Ingenuity is just a technological demonstration - one that has cost NASA about $85 million - but it could kick off a new approach to exploring other planets.</p><p>"In the future, it could transform how we do planetary <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="science">science</keyword> on these other worlds, and eventually be a scout so that we can figure out where exactly do we need to send our robots," NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said in a press briefing before the rover's launch in July 2020.</p><div type="image" title="mars helicopter ingenuity flight nasa gif" height="360" width="640" msid="77251639" hostid="261"></div><p>As with any pioneering technology, especially in space, Ingenuity faces challenges that could undermine its mission. The helicopter's internal heaters will have to keep it warm through frigid Martian nights, when it gets as cold as negative 130 degrees Fahrenheit.</p><p>Since nobody has ever flown on Mars, unknown factors could thwart Ingenuity's attempts. Just last month, another pioneering Mars technology - <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-caused-nasa-mars-mole-failure-soil-dusty-solar-panels-2021-1">a "mole" on NASA's InSight lander</a>, meant to hammer deep into the planet's crust - was unable to complete its mission when unexpectedly thick soil stopped it in its tracks.</p><p>"The helicopter Ingenuity is a high-risk, high-reward endeavor," Matt Wallace, the Perseverance deputy project manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said in a briefing last week. "There's always going to be some probability of an issue. But that's why we're doing it. We'll learn from the issue if it occurs."</p><p>If Ingenuity survives and flies, here's what to expect.</p><h2>The first drone footage from Mars</h2><div type="image" title="mars ingenuity helicopter nasa" height="1462" width="1950" msid="77251635" hostid="261"></div><p>Even for a 4-pound rotocraft like Ingenuity, the thin Martian atmosphere makes flying difficult. The air has just 1% of the density of Earth's atmosphere.</p><p>"The first and foremost challenge is to make a vehicle that's light enough to be lifted," MiMi Aung, who leads the helicopter project at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, explained in a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwdfdE6ruMw&amp;t=1st=1s">video</a> about the spacecraft. "The second is to generate lift."</p><p>To catch enough air, the helicopter's four carbon-fiber blades have to spin in opposite directions at about 2,400 revolutions per minute - about eight times as fast as a passenger helicopter on Earth. To power all that spinning, solar panels on top of the spacecraft will soak up the sun's energy.</p><div type="image" title="mars helicopter ingenuity nasa gif" height="360" width="640" msid="77251637" hostid="261"></div><p>"It's a balance of a very light system, yet having enough energy that's needed to spin the rotors so fast to lift, and on top of it having to design in the autonomy," Aung said.</p><p>Because communicating with spacecraft on Mars takes a few minutes, ground controllers on Earth can't direct Ingenuity's flight in real time. So engineers have designed and programmed the helicopter to carry out up to five flights autonomously, within a span of 30 Martian days (roughly one Earth month).</p><p>The first flight will just test that the helicopter can get off the ground and hover about 10 feet in the air. From there, each test will be more difficult than the last, culminating in a final flight that could carry the helicopter over 980 feet (300 meters) of Martian ground.</p><p>Two cameras on the underside of the drone will capture footage of the Martian surface below - one in color, and one in black and white.</p><div type="image" title="mars helicopter ingenuity nasa gif" height="360" width="640" msid="77251641" hostid="261"></div><p>Perseverance will look on with its own cameras, allowing the helicopter and the rover to record each other.</p><p>"Imagine looking from Perseverance out at a helicopter that is flying around Perseverance, and the helicopter is looking back at Perseverance getting us images of what Perseverance is doing," Bridenstine said in the press briefing. "We're going to be able to see with our own eyes, with motion pictures, these kind of activities happening on another world. And I just can't tell you how excited I am."</p><div type="image" title="mars helicopter ingenuity nasa gif" height="360" width="640" msid="77251643" hostid="261"></div><p>NASA already has plans to send at least one helicopter to another world beyond Mars: A mission planned for 2026 would send a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-10-year-plan-lunar-base-saturn-moon-2019-7">nuclear-powered rotocraft</a> to search for alien life on Saturn's largest moon, Titan.</p><p>"What's really most important is everything we're learning here is for the future rotocraft systems that we want to introduce into <keyword id="718929" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Space-exploration">space exploration</keyword>," Aung said.</p><h2>Getting the helicopter to Mars requires a 'magic trick'</h2><p>NASA's Associate Administrator, Thomas Zurbuchen, proposed the helicopter late in the rover's design. But the team behind the machine was excited about the idea.</p><p>"I told Thomas, whatever you can do to make that happen, I'm all for it," Bridenstine said.</p><div type="image" title="mars ingenuity helicopter perseverance rover delivery" height="675" width="1200" msid="77251645" hostid="261"></div><p>By that time, the top of Perseverance was already full of instruments and equipment. There was very little room to squeeze in a whole new machine.</p><p>"Kind of late in the game, we were asked to accommodate this little thing called the Mars helicopter," Wallace said in the pre-launch briefing. "We had to do a little bit of a magic trick to get that one on the rover. We pulled a bit of a rabbit out of the hat."</p><p>Since the underside of the rover had a stretch of free panel, engineers tucked the light, compact helicopter inside.</p><p>Lockheed Martin, one of NASA's contractors, built the system that will lower Ingenuity to the Martian ground. Around two months after it lands, Perseverance will drop the shield that covers the helicopter. The rover will then drive to whichever flat, debris-free field the mission's managers select for flying Ingenuity.</p><p>After six days of checking out all the robot's systems, mission managers will send the signal to release the helicopter. A small electric motor, a spring-loaded arm, and a pyrotechnic device will slowly twist Ingenuity away from the rover into an upright position, then drop the drone 5 inches to the ground.</p><p>The 19-inch-tall helicopter will have about 26 inches of clearance below the rover's belly.</p><p>For now, this complex delivery system lies in wait as it travels the final miles to its destination.</p><p><em>This post has been updated with new information. The first-ever space helicopter is approaching Mars in the belly of NASA's rover. It could change how we explore other planets.

Today, the project is <a href="https://www.architecturaldigest.com/story/paolo-soleri-arcosanti-arizona">only 5% complete</a>. </span></p><p><span>Called <a href="https://arcosanti.org/project/about-arcosanti/">Arcosanti</a>, the city was envisioned by Italian architect Paolo Soleri, whose dream was to create an advanced urban laboratory where everyday activities could be powered by Earth's natural resources. </span><span>Soleri dubbed his vision an "urban implosion" - referring to design that would promote density and reduce sprawl by eliminating cars and roads. (Ironically, the easiest way to reach the development in the Sonoran Desert is by car.) Instead of light bulbs, rooms would be illuminated by the sun's natural rays, and instead of air conditioning, vegetation would provide natural shade. </span></p><p><span>But as construction on Acrosanti has languished, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/billion-dollar-cities-science-fiction-2019-1">other cities and designers</a> have started to surpass Soleri's ideas. </span></p><p><span>Nations like Qatar and Saudi Arabia are developing cities with pneumatic trash tubes, </span>robot workers, drone taxis, and <span>solar-powered skywalks</span>. Malaysia is looking to build <span>a city with self-watering plants and self-repairing windows. The architect was an early proponent of local food sourcing, solar energy, and walkable neighborhoods - concepts that are now considered paragons of urban design. With an inclusive vision and the right funding, these concepts still have the potential to help address issues like climate change and overcrowding. </p><h2><span>The pitfalls of expensive ideas and cheap labor </span></h2><p><span>By the time Soleri envisioned Arcosanti in the late 1960s, he had garnered acclaim as a <a href="https://arcosanti.org/project/paolo-soleri/">protegee of Frank Lloyd Wright</a> and an inductee to the Museum of Modern Art. He and his wife had also founded the Cosanti Foundation, a non-profit organization that owns the land where Arcosanti now sits. </span></p><p><span>By 1</span>970, Soleri was breaking ground on the first Acrosanti structures, which he described in his book, "The City in the Image of Man."</p><p>The land for Arcosanti was <a href="https://cronkitenews.azpbs.org/2019/05/03/arcosanti-project/">purchased with a loan</a>, but the labor was free. Soleri had <a href="https://cronkitenews.azpbs.org/2019/05/03/arcosanti-project/">accrued a following</a> of students, <span>architects</span>, <span>journalists, filmmakers, and others who volunteered to help bring his vision to life. Soleri lived on the premises and often worked beside them, laying the groundwork for his utopia wearing <a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituaries/10128735/Paolo-Soleri.html">a T-shirt and swim trunks</a>. </span></p><p><span>But many of the architect's concepts turned out to be expensive and difficult to finance. Funding waned, and the site's construction slowed. In time, Soleri's original following began to dwindle as well. </span></p><p>"<span>The original people working there either got frustrated and left, or stayed there and got older and settled into their cozy, Soleri-designed apartments to live a pleasant, hippy-dream life," <a href="https://www.wired.com/2013/04/arcosanti-paolo-soleri/">wrote James McGirk</a>, a former attendee of an Arcosanti workshop. </span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Yuki Yanagimoto</span></p><p class="caption">A view of the Foundry Apse.</p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span>Opinions about Soleri's character vary - some people described him as <a href="https://www.wired.com/2013/04/arcosanti-paolo-soleri/">generous and self-effacing</a>, while others <a href="https://www.iconeye.com/architecture/features/item/12869-arcosanti-dreamer-in-the-dust">said he was arrogant</a> and close-fisted. But most accounts seem to agree that he was unwilling to compromise about his vision.</span></p><p><span>By the time Soleri died in 2013, a new <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2016/may/04/story-cities-35-arcosanti-paolo-soleri-desert">building hadn't been completed</a> at Arcosanti for almost 25 years. </span></p><p><span>A few months before the architect's death, Vice writer </span>Jamie Lee Curtis Taete <a href="https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/bny4az/i-went-to-a-futuristic-hippie-commune-in-the-desert-arcosanti">stayed overnight at</a> an Arcosanti apartment. Taete<span> described the environment as "creepy" and reported that he found curtain-less windows, doors without locks, and a note written on his mirror: "I'm waiting for the lizards to reveal themselves, and tell us they created hell … 'it's not here and now but it will be, unless you bow down to ME!'" </span></p><p><span>But Taete also described a harmonious group of hard-working residents, much like the ones that first settled there in the 1970s. </span></p><p><span>Most of Arcosanti's 80 residents - they call themselves "Arconauts" -  <a href="https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/bj7jjd/arcosanti-city-future-paolo-soleri-arcology">earn minimum wage</a> working for the Cosanti Foundation, which keeps the city running. </span><span>Residents are required to put in 40 weekly hours of on-site work in areas like grounds maintenance, construction, or administration. Some handle the archive, where they <a href="https://arcosanti.org/arconews-blog-14701/">restore and catalogue</a> Soleri's old drawings and models, while others work in the town's cafe or gallery. </span></p><p><span>Still others work for Cosanti Originals Inc., which operates <a href="https://cosanti.com/">the site's foundry</a>. Much of the city's current funding comes from <a href="https://arcosanti.org/faq/much-completed-financially-supported/">the sale of bronze bells</a> produced on-site. </span></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Wolfgang Kaehler/LightRocket/Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">Arcosanti has an on-site foundry that produces bronze bells.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p><span>In exchange for a weekly $75 fee, residents are awarded a food discount and unlimited access to housing, utilities, and facilities like a swimming pool and music library.  </span></p><p><span>Residents also have the option to participate in weekly philosophical discussions, parties, and workshops, and it's common to find local pets running around. </span></p><p><span>"The rule is we can have 12 cats and eight dogs," Tim Bell, Arcosanti's director of community engagement, told Business Insider.</span></p><h2><span>The life of an Arconaut hasn't changed much in 50 years </span><span></span></h2><p><span>Bell, whose work involves raising funds for the site, has a dog of his own. </span><span>He has lived in Arcosanti for about a year, though the development first entered his radar in 2015, when he read about it in The New York Times. </span></p><p><span>"I was surprised I hadn't heard of it before because the town that my parents moved to in Arizona is really very close to where our site is," Bell said. He first visited Arcosanti in </span><span>2017</span><span>. </span></p><p><span>"It was unlike anything I'd ever seen," he said. </span></p><p><span>Eventually, Bell pursued the formal process of becoming an Arconaut. To live at Arcosanti</span><span>, one must submit a letter of intent to the community council and complete a multi-week workshop, which includes assisting with building renovations and infrastructure upgrades. </span></p><p><span>Bell met his wife at Arcosanti, and they now live with other residents in a four-bedroom apartment with two living rooms, a bathroom, kitchen, and balcony. Every unit "has upsides and downsides," he said; t</span><span>he longer a person has lived at Arcosanti, the more priority they get in the city's housing pool. </span></p><p><span>"It's kind of the only version of equity that we've got," Bell added.  </span></p><p>True to Soleri's vision, some residents at Arcosanti live without heaters, relying instead on a <a href="https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/bj7jjd/arcosanti-city-future-paolo-soleri-arcology">solar greenhouse that releases hot air</a><span> into their apartments through a trap door. Though <a href="https://cronkitenews.azpbs.org/2019/05/03/arcosanti-project/">cars aren't exactly off-limits</a>, the city's compact nature encourages people to walk, thereby reducing their environmental footprint. </span></p><p><span>But Arcosanti is a far cry from a sustainable utopia. Its olive trees provide little respite from the desert heat and residents reportedly <a href="https://www.latimes.com/travel/la-tr-d-ariz-architecture-main-20151115-story.html">still buy food from the grocery store</a> (though some grow their own fruit and <a href="https://lindsayrodabaugh.com/home/living-in-arcosanti-the-story">slaughter their own chickens</a>). </span></p><p><span>The city might never be able to support the </span><span>5,000 residents that were originally supposed to live there, but that goal that doesn't concern Arconauts much anymore. </span></p><p><span>Bell estimated that about half of Arcosanti's population is "semi-transient," meaning they're likely to stay for about six months to five years. Around 30% are "semi-permanent," he said, meaning they'll live there for about five to 15 years. Bell deemed rest "lifers" - those who have been with the project since the beginning and will stick around indefinitely. </span></p><p><span>He said he'll likely stay at Arcosanti as long as he's useful to the project and its mission. </span></p><h2>Arcosanti's festivals have helped keep the city afloat </h2><h2><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Hanne Sue Kirsch</span></p><p class="caption">Arcosanti's Form festival in 2016.</p></div><p></p></div></div></h2><p><span>Arcosanti's annual <a href="https://experienceform.com/">Form music festival</a> </span><span>helps to maintain the town's notoriety. The festival, which began in 2014, bills itself as a three-day "creative retreat" that includes yoga, art installations, and a lineup of electronic and indie-rock musicians. This year's event, held last month, featured artists like Skrillex and Florence + The Machine. </span></p><p><span>Like the city itself, the festival is a pared-down version of a formerly grand vision. </span></p><p><span>Shortly after the city broke ground, it began hosting themed festivals that garnered the same young, progressive crowd that lives there today. <a href="https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/6e4vg4/form-arcosanti-festival-2015">More than 10,000 people attended the Arcosanti festival</a> in 1987, which <a href="https://www.dcourier.com/news/2011/oct/20/arcosanti-78-music-under-fire/">featured headliners</a> like Stephen Stills of Crosby, Stills &amp; Nash and Todd Rundgren. But that year, a grass fire in the parking lot wound up damaging around 200 cars, and <a href="https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=886&amp;dat=19790912&amp;id=AhwLAAAAIBAJ&amp;sjid=KFADAAAAIBAJ&amp;pg=3072,3173274">a string of lawsuits</a> from vehicle owners followed. </span></p><p><span>So today's Form festival is kept relatively small. The <a href="https://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/music/form-arcosanti-2019-full-lineup-florence-the-machine-anderson-paak-skrillex-and-more-11196052">guest list is capped</a> at 2,000, and many attendees submit an application explaining how they might contribute to the festival's creative and collaborative environment. The rest of the crowd consists of Arconauts or friends of performers and organizers. </span></p><p><span>In addition to that festival, Arcosanti hosts frequent </span><span>guided tours and community events, including smaller concerts and art exhibits. The city also partners with local universities to provide short residencies for students interested in "arcology" - Soleri's term for dense architecture with a low impact on the environment. </span></p><p>Bell said the community is "refocusing" its mission on conferences and retreats, so more programs and events are likely in store.</p><h2>'I don't think Arcosanti is the city of the future'</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Santi Visalli/Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">Architect Paolo Soleri at Arcosanti in 1976.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p><span>Even as the site's visionary, Soleri doesn't come up much in conversation now, Bell said. </span></p><p><span>"Most of the people who live on this site now are below the age of 30 - people who didn't even really know Soleri," he said. </span></p><p><span>In 2017, Soleri's daughter, Daniela, <a href="https://medium.com/@soleri/sexual-abuse-its-you-him-and-his-work-88ecb8e99648">published an op-ed</a> in which she described her father as sexually abusive, likening him to Hollywood figures like Harvey Weinstein and Bill Cosby.  </span></p><p><span>"He was a fierce narcissist, capable only of seeing others in terms of their role in his world," she wrote. </span></p><p>Daniela grew up at Arcosanti and previously served on the board of her father's foundation. Arcosanti's website now features a #MeToo tab, and the page contains <a href="https://arcosanti.org/me-too/">a statement</a> of support for Soleri's daughter.</p><p>"<span>Her decision to speak out about her father's behavior towards her helps us confront Paolo Soleri's flaws, and compels us to reconsider his legacy," the statement says. </span></p><p><span>But that legacy had already begun to shift prior to the allegations, Bell said. </span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Tomiaki Tamura</span></p><p class="caption">Arcosanti in the shade.</p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span>In the sixties and seventies, he noted, it became somewhat common for people to see innovative or alternative thinkers as gurus or messiahs (though Soleri rejected those monikers). As late as the 90s, Bell said, people settled in Arcosanti just to be close to Soleri.</span></p><p><span>Today, that dynamic has changed. </span></p><p><span>"I think something that we understand as a generation, as millennials, is that everything is collaborative," Bell said. "Nothing gets done by one single person." </span></p><p>He added that Arcosanti residents are well aware that no single city or development solve every problem within our society. </p><p><span>"Soleri gave us a map and we followed that map to the edges," Bell said. </span>"I don't think Arcosanti is the city of the future. ...
