The country's drugs and <keyword id="20006091" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pharmaceuticals" source="keywords">pharmaceuticals</keyword> exports increased 9.67 per cent year-on-year to USD 27.9 billion in 2023-24, even as the total exports dipped by 3 per cent in the last fiscal. According to the commerce ministry data, <keyword id="20988985" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pharma-exports" source="keywords">pharma exports</keyword> in March grew by 12.73 per cent to USD 2.8 billion. In 2022-23, the exports stood at USD 25.4 billion. The top five export markets, for the sector during the last fiscal, are the US, the UK, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, South Africa and Brazil. The US accounts for over 31 per cent of <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="keywords">India</keyword>'s total pharma exports, followed by the UK and Netherlands (about 3 per cent each). In 2023-24, the outbound shipments also entered new geographies like Montenegro, South Sudan, Chad, Comoros, Brunei, Latvia, Ireland, Chad, Sweden, Haiti and Ethiopia. An industry expert said that increasing market opportunities and healthy demand in countries like the US are helping exports to record healthy growth rates month after month. Experts have said that India's pharmaceutical business may exceed USD 130 billion by 2030, supported by expanding market opportunities and heightened demand in the overseas markets. The business stood at over USD 50 billion for the 2022-23. On average, India exports pharma products worth USD 2-3 billion every month. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Malaria kills hundreds of thousands of people every year.</li><li>One Seattle woman recently tried out a new malaria vaccine — administered through biting mosquitoes.</li></ul>When Carolina Reid arrived for her vaccine, the mosquitoes were hungry. Roughly 200 females had been starved overnight, just waiting for her. Inside a lab where others were enveloped in full-body suits, hooded and zipped so no skin was exposed, the only special equipment Reid deployed against the insects was her own body odor. No showering beforehand, researchers had told her, to better attract the bugs.She quietly lowered her smelly arm over a takeout container where a troupe of roughly 200 female mosquitoes was <a href="https://www.nicd.ac.za/three-things-you-should-know-about-mosquitoes/#:~:text=Anopheles%20mosquitoes%20make%20only%20a%20soft%20buzzing%20sound%20and%20hence%20are%20often%20referred%20to%20as%20the%20%E2%80%9Csilent%20killers%E2%80%9D.">silently flying around.</a> Knowing the insects would prefer to feast in darkness, Reid covered the whole contraption with a towel, and waited for them to land. "It was not fun," Reid, a 30-year-old chef from Seattle, told Insider. She sat in silence, waiting for the 10-minute bloodbath to be over, as her forearm got covered in bites. "I would've screamed if I said anything out loud," she said.These mosquitoes had an important job to do: they injected Reid with a special modified malaria parasite — one safely designed to stop growing once it got inside her liver, which is where malaria parasites mature in people before they re-enter the bloodstream and cause disease. The mosquitoes were her vaccinators, injecting a new type of anti-malaria vaccine in her, in a <a href="https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/scitranslmed.abn9709">small clinical trial</a> run by malaria expert Dr. Sean Murphy from the <a href="https://murphylab.weebly.com/">University of Washington</a>. <h2>Mosquitoes can do their own vaccine manufacturing</h2><div type="image" title="woman wearing mask, dissecting mosquitos under microscope" height="611" width="926" msid="95165579" hostid="261" sizebytes="39484"></div>The reason malaria researchers use mosquitoes as vaccinators is because it allows them to quickly test out new vaccine candidates, without having to go through the entire process of manufacturing a shot. Instead, the mosquitoes do the work of growing the modified sporozoite, meant to train the body to fight off malaria.If a successful vaccine is subsequently developed, it will be manufactured as a regular shot, with needles."Mosquitoes are highly efficient delivery bots to introduce these attenuated versions of the parasite that may prove to be highly effective in preventing malaria," Dr. James Kublin, who directs the Seattle Malaria Clinical Trials Center, said. Each visit, she'd get bitten by a few hundred mosquitos, receive a few hundred dollars, then go in for blood draws regularly in the days afterwards. Hot, red, burning reactions were the norm for a few days afterwards. "It just became this place that I knew the people," she said of the lab. "It's like your morning coffee shop."<div type="image" title="three side by side photos of carolina's arm, covered in bites" height="460" width="924" msid="95165583" hostid="261" sizebytes="25754"></div>Finally, after several months of bites and blood tests, Reid was bitten one last time — this time by five real, infection-producing malaria mosquitos, in what's called a vaccine "challenge." <a href="https://www.insider.com/man-drank-smoothie-that-gave-him-dysentery-for-vaccine-trial-2022-4">Challenge trials</a> are critical for malaria vaccine research, because they give researchers a controlled environment to figure out how well different people's immune systems are responding to their jabs (or, bites in this case.) Reid was feeling confident about her malaria protection. Reid had malaria.She burst into tears. This wasn't how a successful vaccine trial was supposed to end, she thought."All of this research, all of this work that all of these other people did, they didn't get the outcome that they wanted," she said. <h2>People often don't realize they're infected with malaria until it's too late</h2><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-remembering-malarias-toll-as-we-celebrate-the-new-vaccine-2021-10?r=US&amp;IR=T">Malaria</a> is a tricky disease to prepare a vaccine against. It's a stealth pathogen — once it enters the body, it makes a beeline for the liver, spending at least six days there before people get symptoms. There are some highly effective, well-established malaria drugs available, but the disease remains deadly, because treatment needs to start early, and many people don't realize they have it until it's too late. In 2018, for example, a 24-year-old Peace Corps volunteer serving in The Comoros <a href="https://www.oversight.gov/sites/default/files/oig-reports/Management_Advisory_Report-Review_of_the_Circumstances_Surrounding_the_Death_of_a_Volunteer_in_Comoros-IG-19-04-SR.pdf">died of malaria</a>, after she complained of dizziness, nausea, headaches, dehydration, fatigue, and chills for about a week. A 23-year-old <a href="https://www.peninsuladailynews.com/news/malaria-claims-navy-seabee-from-port-angeles/">navy sailor deployed to Liberia</a> was killed by the same parasite in 2009.Their deaths represent just two of the more than half a million <a href="https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/malaria#:~:text=estimated%20number%20of-,malaria%20deaths%20stood%20at%20627%20000%20in%202020,-%E2%80%93%20an%20increase%20of">malaria</a> fatalities happening around the world every year, <a href="https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/levels-and-trends-in-child-mortality-report-2021#:~:text=From%20the%20end%20of%20the,more%20vulnerable%20to%20severe%20diseases.">many in newborns</a>. (<a href="https://www.cdc.gov/malaria/about/history/elimination_us.html#:~:text=It%20consisted%20primarily,was%20slowly%20achieved.">The US got rid of malaria</a> in the late 1940s by spraying the toxic bug-killer DDT around hotspots.)<h2>The current malaria vaccine only offers 30% protection</h2><div type="image" title="woman holding baby with worried look" height="1241" width="1655" msid="95165590" hostid="261" sizebytes="80118"></div>The first malaria vaccine, Mosquirix (or RTS/S), was <a href="https://www.who.int/news/item/06-10-2021-who-recommends-groundbreaking-malaria-vaccine-for-children-at-risk">recommended by the WHO</a> last year, but it's only about 30% effective, and that's with four doses, providing protection for maybe about four <a href="https://www.science.org/content/article/first-malaria-vaccine-rolled-out-africa-despite-limited-efficacy-and-nagging-safety">years</a>. Disease experts would like to find a vaccine that can maintain at least 75% effectiveness. A new malaria vaccine candidate just tested by the University of Oxford <a href="https://www.ox.ac.uk/news/2021-04-23-malaria-vaccine-becomes-first-achieve-who-specified-75-efficacy-goal">may work better</a> than Mosquirix, with researchers touting around 77% efficacy, but the reality is we only know that vaccine performed well for one malaria season (about 6 months) and it also requires at least four shots. That's no easy feat when you're working with children and families living in <a href="https://bmcmedicine.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12916-018-1172-x#:~:text=Many%20of%20the%20estimated%20216%20million%20malaria%20cases%20and%20445%2C000%20deaths%20in%202016%20occurred%20in%20remote%20areas%20of%20the%20tropics%20where%20health%20services%20are%20weak%20or%20non%2Dexistent">remote areas</a>, often far from any health services.Kubin, the vaccine researcher, said being in a trial like the one Reid participated in "requires battling every atavistic impulse" in our bodies, but he's tried mosquito bite vaccines too. He said if it "accelerates the safe, ethical evaluation of the malaria candidate vaccine, I'm all for it."<h2>Reid's malaria treatment was 'boring' and she got a $4,200 paycheck</h2>After her malaria diagnosis, Reid was swiftly prescribed <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/malaria/resources/pdf/fsp/drugs/atovaquoneproguanil.pdf">Malarone</a>, and while the drug wiped her out for a couple of days, she never experienced any malaria symptoms. Treatment was swift, "boring," and effective, she said.<div type="image" title="woman smiling, getting blood drawn in malaria vaccine trial" height="657" width="500" msid="95165592" hostid="261" sizebytes="26116"></div>But the diagnosis also meant she had to quit the study early with around $4,200 in hand, instead of the $5,500 she initially thought she might make during the trial. Now that it's all over, people often applaud Reid when she tells them about her challenge. "Most people are like, 'Wow, how brave of you!'" she said. She finds it "weird" and doesn't think her participation is anything in need of praise. She knows clinical trials follow rigorous safety protocols, plus she's making money doing it, "so don't worry," she said. Researchers will use the information gleaned from her malaria infection to determine their next steps in vaccine development. Since this vaccine was about 50% effective, they can use information about both the successful and the unsuccessful immune responses like Reid's to work on a better formulation.If they find it, the anopheles mosquito may one day truly be just a nuisance, instead of a tiny, flying assassin.

As such, the United States will continue targeting persons, wherever located, who facilitate North Korea's illicit shipping practices," a US advisory to the public warned.Included in the Treasury's press release were pictures of individual ships that had conducted trade with North Korean vessels. The images were not taken from a satellite and suggest extensive surveillance of North Korean activity.<h2>Part of 'maximum pressure'</h2><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">US Treasury</div></div></div>Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the US was "aggressively targeting" North Korea's illicit trade and evasion of sanctions by "taking decisive action to block the vessels, shipping companies, and entities across the globe that work on North Korea's behalf.""We're going to do everything to stop ship-to-ship transfers," Mnuchin said at a White House press conference, adding that the sanctions targeted "virtually all the ships [North Korea is] using at this point in time."Mnuchin said the steps "will significantly hinder the Kim regime's capacity to conduct evasive maritime activities that facilitate illicit coal and fuel transports, and erode its abilities to ship goods through international waters." US announces massive sanctions and warns the world: do business with North Korea at your own risk

Johannesburg, Apr 11 (AFP) When Africa's first case of coronavirus was detected in Egypt in February, the rest of the continent prepared for the brunt of a pandemic that has engulfed Europe and spread to the United States, infecting more than 1.6 million worldwide.Health experts warned of the devastation the deadly virus could cause in Africa, where most hospitals are desperately short of equipment and trained staff.Coronavirus has since spread to 52 African countries, but despite a steady rise in the number of confirmed cases, the continent continues to lag behind the global curve for infections and deaths.Still, the World Health Organization last month warned Africa faced a dramatic evolution of the pandemic even as governments imposed restrictions to help curb the spread. The continent appears poorly equipt to manage a major health crisis and is struggling to test enough to monitor virus cases.To date the novel respiratory disease has infected more than 12,800 people on the continent and killed at least 692, according to a tally compiled by AFP.Only the Comoros archipelago and the tiny kingdom of Lesotho have not yet detected any cases.South Africa is the worst-affected country, with over 2,000 confirmed cases and 24 recorded deaths so far -- well behind the more than 871,000 cases and 71,000 deaths counted in Europe to date.Experts, however, warn that the tide is rising."During the last four days we can see that the numbers have already doubled," said Michel Yao, the World Health Organization (WHO) Africa's emergency response programme manager."If the trend continues... some countries may face a huge peak very soon," Yao told AFP.WHO Africa Director Matshidiso Moeti echoed the concern, adding that the spread of COVID-19 outside major cities opened "a new front in our fight against this virus".Possibly the greatest question mark in analyses of coronavirus in Africa, compounded by a global lack of testing capacity.Despite a donation of more than one million coronavirus testing kits by Chinese billionaire Jack Ma, most African countries lack the equipment needed to detect the disease.South Africa -- which has the most advanced healthcare system in sub-Saharan Africa -- has so far only managed to test around 73,000 of its 57 million inhabitants."This is way too low for the kind of challenges South Africa is facing," said the country's Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, who is aiming to scale up to 30,000 tests per day.Nigeria, Africa's biggest economy, has only carried out 5,000 coronavirus tests to date for a country of 190 million people."The testing system is quite overloaded," admitted a doctor working at a private clinic in Lagos, who asked not to be identified."It takes time for... the results," he added. "And are they accurate? We don't know." Inability to test for the virus has forced several countries to work with vague and sometimes misleading estimates.Kenya, for instance, has predicted its number of coronavirus cases to reach 10,000 by the end of April.Ten days into the month, the number of detected infections remained lower than 200."The reason is we have not gone to do community-based testing," explained the Director General of Kenya's health ministry, Patrick Amoth."So we still stand by our earlier projections. We don't know what is going to happen." The head of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, John Nkengasong, admitted that Africa's coronavirus statistics were far from "perfect"."We just lack the means," he told AFP.But Nkengasong also dismissed claims that a high number of infections had slipped under the radar, pointing out that hospitals "would be flooded with people" if that was the case.The delayed spread of coronavirus gave African countries some leeway to roll out the same measures implemented in Europe to stem the disease.Governments across the continent reacted ahead of time, closing borders and imposing lockdowns and curfews when just a handful of cases had been detected.Those measures have been tricky to enforce in impoverished and densely populated neighbourhoods, where houses are overcrowded and most survive off informal work -- making it almost impossible to remain home.The WHO's Moeti cautioned that it was "too early to say" whether anti-coronavirus measures were slowing the epidemic in Africa.Meanwhile, South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa said earlier this week that there was "sufficient evidence" to show that a nation-wide lockdown was "working"."In the two weeks before the lockdown, the average daily increase in new cases was around 42 percent.
