The Delhi government on Friday set up an <keyword id="10232172" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="impact-assessment-committee">impact assessment committee</keyword> to ascertain the effect of Pusa bio-decomposer in reducing pollution due to stubble burning in the national capital. The Technical Advisory Group for Emergency Use Listing (TAG-EUL) is an independent advisory group that guides and recommends WHO on whether COVID-19 vaccine can be listed under emergency use or not. “The TAG met today (26 October 2021) and decided that additional clarifications from the manufacturer are needed to conduct a final EUL risk-benefit assessment for global use of the vaccine," WHO had told PTI in an email interaction. "The TAG expects to receive these clarifications from the manufacturer by the end of this week, and aims to reconvene for the final risk-benefit assessment on Wednesday, 3 November," WHO had added at the time. Covaxin, which was co-developed by Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech, in collaboration with the government's Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), was granted emergency authorisation in the country in January. It has demonstrated 77.8 per cent effectiveness against symptomatic Covid-19 and 65.2 per cent protection against the new Delta variant. The number stands at more than a million tonnes per year in India, and most of this comes from household sources. As per <a href="https://scroll.in/article/1013398/by-creating-a-false-demand-for-fresh-looks-fast-fashion-is-hurting-the-environment#:~:text=As%20we%20said%2C%20in%20India,municipal%20solid%20waste%20in%20India.">Indian Textile Journal</a>, textile waste is also the third-largest source of municipal solid waste in India. “Fast fashion encourages over consumption through marketing tactics and trend replication. This has evolved into a need for cheap clothing that comes at a cost of unfair wages to workers, synthetic clothing that leaches thousands of microplastics in the environment. This results in harmful impacts on the environment, garment workers, animals, and, ultimately, consumers’ wallets,” Monisha Narke, founder of RUR Greenlife, told Business Insider India. Greenhouse gas emissions by the global textile industry are greater than those from shipping and international air travel combined. Lack of awareness, budget, financial viability and infrastructure are some other challenges that India’s waste management system is facing. According to the World Bank, effective waste management is expensive, often comprising 20-50% of municipal budgets. India was ranked at the bottom position of the <a href="https://epi.yale.edu/epi-results/2022/country/ind">Environmental Performance Index </a>(EPI) 2022, with 151st position in waste management, 165th position in climate policy. The same saree I put embellishments and motifs and stick it onto some plastic item using glue and make a décor item out of it. This item may probably be used for a few months and eventually be thrown away,” Narke added, highlighting that a bag would be a sustainable offering. The company diverts over 850 tonnes of bio waste into composting and over 900 tonnes of solid waste into recycling on an annual basis. The alternative is to use sustainable fashion products, but even they come with a cost as the social aspects of <a href="https://hbr.org/2022/01/the-myth-of-sustainable-fashion" data-type="tilCustomLink">these are being questioned.</a> “A lot of big brands are now talking about circular economy, give back your used stuff and you can get a discount on your next purchase. They are coming up with lines that say made from recycled or made from sustainable materials.. That change has not reached grass root level,” Vani Hans, consulting head at ESG consulting company Treeni. Hans noted that the carbon footprint of an item is usually calculated through a life cycle assessment method, which takes into account the number of times the item was used for, the products that went into its creation, emissions during transformations and the end result of the article. A user can reduce carbon footprint by buying better quality products, if not sustainable, which will last them longer. The users can also segregate solid waste at source, which makes collection easier. The Subject Expert Committee met on Wednesday to consider the Emergency Use Authorisation (EUA) request of Pfizer, SII and Bharat Biotech Private Ltd. Further time was requested on behalf of Pfizer, while the additional data and information presented by the SII and Bharat Biotech was perused and analysed by the SEC. "The analysis of the additional data and information is going on. SEC will convene again on 1st January 2021 (Friday)," the Centre said in a statement. America's Pfizer was the first one to apply for the accelarated approval on December 4, followed by the SII and Bharat Biotech who applied on December 6 and 7, respectively. On December 9, the Subject Expert Committee had asked the SII and Bharat Biotech to submit more data and information to get approval. The expert panel had then recommended the SII to submit outcome of the assessment of UK regulatoe for grant of emergency use approval, the updated safety data of the Phase 2/3 clinical trial and immunogenicity data from the clinical trials in UK and India. Bharat Biotech was recommended to present the safety and efficacy data from the ongoing Phase 3 clinical trial in the country for further consideration. Their applications were reviewed again earlier on Wednesday, hours after the UK accepted the recommendation of the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to authorise Oxford University-AstraZeneca's Covid-19 vaccine, named Covishield, for emergency use. The authorization was significant for India as the Pune-based SII had tied up with the company to conduct clinical trials and manufacture the vaccine. Besides, Bharat Biotech is developing country's indigenous coronavirus vaccine - Covaxin - in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research. The Central government plans to vaccinate nearly 30 crore people in the first phase of drive. It will be offered to one crore healthcare workers, along with 2 crore frontline and essential workers and 27 crore elderly, mostly above the age of 50 years with co-morbidities. Covishield uses a replication-deficient chimpanzee viral vector based on a weakened version of a common cold virus that causes infections in chimpanzees and contains the genetic material of the SARS-CoV-2 virus spike protein. After vaccination, the surface spike protein is produced, priming the immune system to attack the coronavirus if it later infects the body. The vaccine can be stored, transported and handled at normal refrigerated conditions at two to eight degrees Celsius for at least six months and administered within existing healthcare settings. Its interim analysis for efficacy showed that the vaccine was 70.4 per cent effective at preventing symptomatic COVID-19 occurring more than 14 days after receiving two doses of the vaccine. The SII has already made 40 to 50 million doses of the shot. "We have 40-50 million doses of Covishield stockpiled. We will be producing around 300 million doses by July 2021," its CEO Adar Poonawalla had recently said. India continues to mull over SII and Bharat Biotech's COVID-19 vaccine candidates

The national capital's air quality was in the "very poor" category on Tuesday morning, the first time this season, with calm winds and low temperatures allowing accumulation of pollutants. According to the Ministry of Earth Sciences' Air Quality Early Warning System for <keyword id="66" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi">Delhi</keyword>, an increase in farm fires in Punjab, Haryana and neighbouring regions of <keyword id="3001" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pakistan">Pakistan</keyword> is also going to impact the air quality in Delhi-NCR. The city recorded an air quality index (AQI) of 304 at 9:30 am, which falls in the "very poor" category. The 24-hour average AQI was 261 on Monday, the worst since February. It was 216 on Sunday and 221 on Saturday. Wazirpur (AQI 380), Vivek Vihar (AQI 355) and <keyword id="6374669" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="jahangirpuri">Jahangirpuri</keyword> (AQI 349) recorded the highest pollution levels. An AQI between 0 and 50 is considered 'good', 51 and 100 'satisfactory', 101 and 200 'moderate', 201 and 300 'poor', 301 and 400 'very poor', and 401 and 500 'severe'. A senior scientist at the Delhi Pollution Control Committee said the dip in the air quality can be attributed to low wind speed and temperatures which allowed accumulation of pollutants. "Stubble burning has also increased in neighbouring states. Also, the ventilation index is low," he said. Ventilation index is the speed at which pollutants can get dispersed. A ventilation index lower than 6000 sqm/second, with average wind speed less than 10 kmph, is unfavourable for dispersion of pollutants. PM10 levels in Delhi-NCR stood at 300 microgram per cubic meter (g/m3) at 9 am -- the highest this season so far, according to CPCB data. PM10 levels below 100 g/m3 are considered safe in India. PM10 is particulate matter with a diameter of 10 micrometers and is inhalable into the lungs. These particles include dust, pollen and mold spores. The levels of PM2.5 - finer particles which can even enter the bloodstream - were 129 g/m3. PM2.5 levels up to 60 g/m3 are considered safe. NASA's satellite imagery showed a large cluster of fires near Amritsar and Firozpur in Punjab and Patiala, Ambala and Kaithal in Haryana. According to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research, farm fires contributed 3 percent particulate matter to Delhi's PM2.5 concentration on Monday. It is likely to be "negligible" for the next two days due to a change in the wind direction from northwesterly to southeasterly, the government agency said. On Tuesday morning, the maximum wind speed was 4 kilometers per hour, according to the <keyword id="6355166" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India-meteorological-department">India Meteorological Department</keyword>. Low temperatures and stagnant winds help in accumulation of pollutants near the ground, affecting air quality. With Delhi-NCR bracing for months of poor air quality, experts have warned that high levels of air pollution can aggravate the COVID-19 pandemic. Severe air pollution in Delhi is a year-round problem, which can be attributed to unfavourable meteorological conditions, farm fires in neighbouring regions and local sources of pollution. According to an analysis by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water, a Delhi-based think tank, transportation contributes the most -- 18 to 39 percent -- to Delhi's air pollution. Road dust is the second largest source of air pollution in the city (18 to 38 percent), followed by industries (2 to 29 percent), thermal power plants (3 to 11 percent) and construction (8 percent). This year, the Delhi government has launched a massive anti-air pollution campaign -- "Yuddh Pradushan Ke Viruddh' -- which is being led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Environment Minister <keyword id="6391020" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="gopal-rai">Gopal Rai</keyword>. A "green war room" with a 10-member expert team has been set up at the Delhi Secretariat to monitor the steps being taken to deal with high levels of air pollution in winters. The environment department has also taken stern action against project proponents at large construction and demolition sites flouting dust control norms. The government will also start the spraying of "Pusa bio-decomposer" solution in non-basmati rice fields in the national capital, on Tuesday. The solution, experts say, can turn the stubble into manure in 15 to 20 days and therefore, can prevent stubble burning. It has been learnt that Sharma, who had injured his hamstring during <keyword id="1219822" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-Indian-Premier-League">the Indian Premier League</keyword> (IPL), cleared the fitness test on Friday and will be leaving for Australia over the weekend. However, an official statement on this regard is yet to come from <keyword id="1855486" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-Board-of-Control-for-Cricket">the Board of Control for Cricket</keyword> in India (BCCI). According to a report in ESPNcricinfo, the 32-year-old will take a charter flight from Mumbai to Dubai, from where he will fly to Sydney on December 13 and be available for selection for the last two Tests of the four-match series. Upon reaching Sydney, Sharma has to undergo a mandatory quarantine of 14 days in a facility separate from the bio-secure bubble in which the Indian Test squad is currently in, the report further stated. The BCCI had informed about the decision to add Sharma to the squad for the Australia Test series after initially excluding him from the tour due to the hamstring injury. "The BCCI Medical Team has been monitoring Rohit Sharma's fitness and has briefed All-India Senior Selection Committee on the same. In consultation with Sharma, it has been decided to rest him for the ODIs and T20Is in Australia to regain full fitness and he has been included in India's Test squad for <keyword id="10339645" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-border-gavaskar-trophy">the Border-Gavaskar Trophy</keyword>," the BCCI said in a release on November 9. India captain Virat Kohli, who himself will return to India after the first Test in order to be his wife for the birth of their first child, had said that there had been no clarity on the injury of Sharma. "Well, before we had the selection meeting with selectors in Dubai, we were told that he (Sharma) is injured and unavailable for selection and it mentioned a line that there is a two-week rest and rehab period (they had to undergo). It said that the pros and cons and implications of the injury have been explained to him and he understood that, and he was unavailable for selection and that is the information we got on mail before the selection meeting," Kohli had said before the start of the ODI series. "After that, he played the IPL so we all thought he will be on that flight to Australia which he wasn't on...we had no information on the reason why he is not traveling with us and after that, the only other information we received on mail is that he is in the NCA and he has been assessed," he added. The first Test of the four-match series starts at the Adelaide Oval from December 17.
