ECI Announces election schedules for Maharashtra and Jharkhand; both states to vote in November

He said that Kerala and many other states have made this demand in the past with the southern state suggesting that it be increased to 50 per cent. "The demand for a higher share for the states in the taxes collected by the Union is having continued relevance and it is my request to the eminent scholars and colleagues who are here to formulate this in a concrete manner," Vijayan said. "This will help the states to make an effective case before the 16th Finance Commission for raising the share of taxes which are distributed to the states, in view of the widening vertical fiscal Imbalances."

"In addition, we propose increasing the share of states in Central taxes from 41 per cent to 50 per cent. Over the years, cesses and surcharges that are not shared with states have increased, leaving states with a smaller share of total gross tax revenue," he said. Increasing the vertical devolution will give states the fiscal space they need to strengthen welfare programmes, address infrastructure gaps and prioritise local development, he further said. He, however, said it is not just a demand for <keyword id="19909031" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="telangana" source="keywords">Telangana</keyword> but for all states, ensuring a more cooperative federal structure that will benefit the nation as a whole. Bhatti further said the state government urges the Finance Commission to reconsider the use of per capita income distance as the primary indicator in determining horizontal devolution as measuring prosperity and well-being solely by per capita income would deny Telangana the resources needed to address the inequities that exist within the state. The state government is suggesting that the formula for horizontal devolution be modified to add at least a 50 per cent weightage to <keyword id="20149362" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gsdp" source="keywords">GSDP</keyword> (gross state domestic production) contribution. "A greater weight on GSDP would incentivise states to adopt reforms that improve productivity, attract investment and create jobs, ultimately contributing to the national economy. This approach would not only make states more competitive but also help reduce regional disparities, encouraging more balanced growth across the country," he opined. Pointing out that certain expenditures for schemes such as Rythu Bharosa, farm loan waivers and food subsidies are often mislabelled as "freebies," he urged the Commission to recognise these programmes as necessary investments in the welfare of our people. He mentioned that a large part of the state's resources is now being diverted toward debt servicing and hence requested the Finance Commission's support in either restructuring this debt or providing additional assistance to help free up resources for further development. We need to think about how we can reduce the impact. This is the only thing we can manage. Stress cannot be avoided but it can be managed. In the corporate world stress is a part of our life. We need to understand how to react to that. We are the solution makers itself." Badgujar said. Anand Kulkarni, a Process Specialist at Infosys, agreed that while stress is prevalent in many workplaces, it can be handled with the right mindset. "Being in the corporate for more than ten years, I have been experiencing and observing a lot of work stress. I handle stress by enjoying the work. Stress does exist in the corporate world but it is all about how you handle it.” Pushkar Aurangabadkar, an educator and author, took a more philosophical approach to the issue, noting that societal pressures often drive people into high-stress environments. "The incident is very painful and it has a lot to do with the kind of aspirations that we have these days. The majority of which comes from the compulsive obsession for owning a lot of things. It is not just the trap of corporate but we also need to consider what makes people get into these traps in the first place.” Aurangabadkar added that fostering compassion and promoting spiritual wisdom could help reduce feelings of isolation and pressure in the corporate world. "But there are means and ways in which this can be handled in a better way and as a society, we should be taking care of it. It depends on corporate culture and as everyone might be aware every company has a different culture. It depends from company to company what kind of culture they have that defines how much pressure is getting instituted in that organisation. But beyond that what I believe is compassion and the longing for spiritual wisdom need to be promoted in society because it can reduce the possibility of such incident. The reason is that beyond the pressure people are facing in corporate, it drills down the compulsion and loneliness that we are facing and the answers to which may lie in the compassion." <h2>EY employee's death shocks nation</h2> Anna Sebastian Perayil, a 26-year-old Chartered Accountant, passed away in July 2024, just four months after joining EY in her first job. Her mother, in a heartfelt letter to the company, attributed Anna's death to extreme work pressure. The letter went viral on LinkedIn last week. Anna’s mother said in the letter that her daughter worked tirelessly, even on her convocation day despite experiencing chest pains. Though doctors found no immediate cause for concern, Anna continued to feel unwell. Her mother added how Anna’s manager would reschedule meetings during cricket matches and assign tasks at the end of the day, dismissing Anna’s concerns about the late-night workload. The letter added that despite her struggles, Anna chose to stay, eager to learn and gain experience, but the pressure proved too much. In her letter, Anna’s mother expressed her deep sorrow, not only at losing her daughter but also at EY's failure to provide support. Now, the tech billionaire's "America PAC" is wading into the fight for control of the <keyword id="20568525" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="House-of-Representatives" source="keywords">House of Representatives</keyword>. According to a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://docquery.fec.gov/pdf/127/202409169675489127/202409169675489127.pdf">document</a> filed with the <keyword id="20622841" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Federal-Election-Commission" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Federal Election Commission" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Federal Election Commission">Federal Election Commission</keyword> on Monday night, America PAC is spending more than $2.1 million across 14 competitive House races. There's likely to be more where that came from. Punchbowl News <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://punchbowl.news/archive/91624-am/">reported</a> on Monday that the PAC has set aside $10 million for "voter turnout" in House races around the country. In an interview with the Canadian psychologist Jordan Peterson in July, Musk said that his PAC was "not meant to be sort of a hyperpartisan PAC" and that the goals were "promoting meritocracy" and promoting "freedom to operate, meaning the least amount of of government intervention possible." It remains unclear how much Musk, who <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chris-young-republican-operative-elon-musk-hired-donald-trump-donor-2024-8">created the PAC</a> and is <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/09/15/musk-trump-super-pac/">reportedly</a> involved deeply in itself operations, has contributed to the PAC himself. The PAC's July report did not include any contributions from Musk, and the group isn't required to disclose further contributions until mid-October. Musk has also <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/musk-trump-donation-campaign-finance-reform-2024-7">denied earlier reports</a> that he planned to spend $45 million per month on the effort. Neither Musk nor a representative for the PAC immediately responded to a request for comment. So far, America PAC has spent more than $55 million on the election, the vast majority of which has gone toward supporting Trump and opposing Vice President Kamala Harris. But the spending indicates that Musk's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-political-beliefs-public-stances-timeline-republican-desantis-2022-6">pivot toward the right</a> isn't limited to Trump, and that he's invested in helping <keyword id="20093987" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Republicans" source="keywords">Republicans</keyword> hold onto control of the House as well. <h2>The races where Musk's PAC is spending</h2>According to the Monday night filing, Musk's PAC is spending heavily on both digital ads and canvassing operations. In each instance, the PAC is spending an equal amount on boosting the <keyword id="20072488" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="GOP" source="keywords">GOP</keyword> candidate and going negative on the Democratic candidate. According to a <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/india/india-accuses-samsung-xiaomi-colluding-with-amazon-flipkart-2024-09-14/">report </a>by Reuters, smartphone makers have been accused of colluding with e-commerce players to launch products on their platforms exclusively. The smartphone makers have also been accused of violating competition laws by giving preference to select sellers, prioritising listings, steeply discounting products and more. <h2>CCI submits report on Amazon and Flipkart</h2>The CCI has reportedly submitted a 1,027-page report on Amazon which has accused Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus, Motorola and Realme of being “involved in the practise of exclusive phone launches” and “colluding” with Amazon, breaking competition law. Similarly, the watchdog has submitted a 1,696-page report on Flipkart that has accused Samsung, Xiaomi, Lenovo, Motorola and Vivo of “colluding”. "Exclusivity in business is anathema” CCI's additional director general G.V. Siva Prasad said, as per the report. “Not only is it against free and fair competition but also against the interest of consumers," Prasad added. While the e-commerce giants Amazon and Flipkart reportedly downplayed the practice of launching “exclusive” smartphones, the practice was found to be “rampant” during the investigation. India’s e-commerce market is expected to grow from $57 billion in 2023 to over $160 billion in 2028. Smartphone maker Vivo currently has a market share of 19% in smartphone shipments, followed by Samsung and Xiaomi, which have a combined market share of over 35%. As per a recent <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/mobile/news/indian-smartphone-market-records-7-2-growth-in-the-first-half-of-2024-vivo-leads-the-market-in-q2/articleshow/112629172.cms">report</a> by the International Data Corporation, the shipments to online channels grew by 8% year-on-year to reach 50% in Q2 2024, up from 47% in Q2 2023. As per the report, the exclusive launches pushed customers towards these online platforms and harmed small retailers. The investigation stems from a complaint lodged by the Confederation of All India Traders (<keyword id="20143308" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CAIT" source="keywords">CAIT</keyword>) in 2020. The traders body, which has over 80 million members had accused the smartphone makers and e-commerce players of disadvantaging offline retailers and favouring online exclusive launches. Xiaomi and Samsung accused of colluding with Amazon and Flipkart

The <keyword id="19895221" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Competition-Commission-of-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Competition Commission of India" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Competition Commission of India">Competition Commission of India</keyword> has dismissed a complaint against <keyword id="20201307" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Google India" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Google India">Google India</keyword> alleging that the tech giant abused its <keyword id="22202852" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dominant-Position" source="keywords">dominant position</keyword> to favour <keyword id="20200171" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Truecaller" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Truecaller" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Truecaller">Truecaller</keyword> in the market for caller ID and spam protection apps, as it found no evidence of violation of <keyword id="20854369" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Competition-Law" source="keywords">competition law</keyword>. While dismissing the complaint, the fair trade regulator said, "The Commission finds that no prima facie case of contravention of the provisions of Section 4 of the Act is made out against <keyword id="6355629" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google" source="Orion">Google</keyword> in the instant matter". Section 4 of the Competition Act, deals with the abuse of dominant position. The ruling came on a complaint filed by Rachna Khaira (informant) accusing Google of granting exclusive access to Truecaller to share private contact information while prohibiting other apps from doing the same. Further, she alleged that this practice has distorted the market and created a monopoly for Truecaller. The informant also alleged that Google's developer policy prohibits unauthorised disclosure of non-public contacts, and Truecaller's privacy policy, to which she argued allowed the sharing of such information. Further, Khaira alleged that Google favoured Truecaller due to commercial arrangements involving Google's cloud storage and advertising services. The regulator after reviewing submissions from both Google and Khaira, found that the informant's claims were unsubstantiated. "...the allegation of the informant remains unsubstantiated and despite sufficient opportunity, the informant has not provided any evidence to prima facie establish that Google is according either preferential treatment to Truecaller or resorting to discriminatory practises by allowing access to user's contact data to Truecaller while denying the same to the competing applications," CCI said in an order on June 24. The competition watchdog also addressed the commercial relationship allegations against the tech major, stating that mere commercial relationships do not imply preferential treatment unless proven. However, the regulator found no evidence suggesting that these changes granted Truecaller a competitive advantage over its rivals. The request for interim relief by the informant to temporarily block Truecaller from operating on the Play Store was also rejected by the competition watchdog."The Commission finds that no prima facie case of contravention of the provisions of Section 4 of the Act is made out against Google in the instant matter. Accordingly, the Information is ordered to be closed," the fair trade regulator said.
