<ul class="summary-list"><li>Scuba diver Rex Colubra says he befriended a smallmouth bass named Elvis in a Minnesota lake. </li><li>Elvis has grown close to Colubra and lets him feed him crawfish, the diver said.</li></ul><p>For Rex Colubra, a dog isn't man's best friend — instead, it's a fish named Elvis. </p><p>Colubra, a Wisconsin native, said he met and befriended Elvis while scuba diving in a lake in eastern Minnesota in September 2021. Since then, Colubra has been sharing his quirky interactions with the smallmouth bass on his <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@elvisthesmallmouth?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">TikTok</a> and <a href="https://www.instagram.com/rex_colubra/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Instagram</a> accounts, where he has over 173,100 and 3,690 followers, respectively, as of July 2023.</p><p>In one of Colubra's most <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@elvisthesmallmouth/video/7168532364833033518?" target="_blank" rel="noopener">popular TikToks</a> — a compilation of videos that show him hanging out with Elvis, which has over 445,800 views since it was posted in November 2022 — the diver wrote that his freshwater pal has been "strangely fascinated" with him since they crossed paths.</p> <p>In the caption of the TikTok, he also noted that Elvis is easily identified by his distinctive crooked mouth from, a result from a "fishing injury that ripped the connective tissues in his upper lip."</p><p>On Wednesday, Colubra went into more detail about his unique relationship with Elvis and how it evolved on an episode of the <a href="https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/elvis-the-smallmouth-bass/id1572605815?i=1000621586867" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"According to the Osbornes"</a> podcast.</p><p>Colubra told the hosts Jack and John Osborne, a son-and-father podcast duo, that he crossed paths with Elvis nearly two years ago but never expected that they'd end up spending more than 16 dives together. </p><p>"It was more about finding that connection with nature," he said, speaking about his diving adventures.</p><p>Colubra said he noticed Elvis seemed comfortable around him on their first dive, and that the smallmouth bass has since let him feed him crawfish.</p><p>Colubra also said in the podcast that he named the fish after the late musician Elvis Presley after noticing the "conspicuous wound" on the creature's mouth. "He had that little snarl so I decided I'd call him Elvis," Colubra added. </p><p>During his early interactions with Elvis, Colubra said he quickly discovered his assumption that fish just "kind of traveled around willy nilly" wasn't the case with his new friend. Over time, he realized that Elvis kept to a "home range" the size of a football field within the lake, which one of the podcast hosts said Colubra wouldn't name out of concern for the creature's safety.</p><p>That said, in order to give Elvis the heads up he's in the water, Colubra said on the podcast that he taught the fish to answer to a special call. He showed off exactly how that works in <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@elvisthesmallmouth/video/7178630285267995950?" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a TikTok video he shared</a> in December 2022 that has over 138,100 views as of Thursday. The clip shows Colubra uses a series of noises made with his throat to call Elvis to him from beneath the water. </p> <p>And since he and Elvis have gotten close, Colubra said on the podcast that the relationship has encouraged other smallmouth bass that call the lake home to approach him.</p><p>"Since I've been going out there and Elvis has learned to trust me and has shadowed me and been around me a bunch, the other fish have seen that and kind of like 'Monkey see, monkey do,'" Colubra said. </p><p>In an <a href="https://www.instagram.com/reel/CtujtWcNdTQ/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Instagram post</a> shared on June 20, Colubra shared a video of a fish he's called Chum, who he said is one of around six to seven of the bass in Elvis' school in the caption. </p> <p>Colubra said on the podcast that he credits his bond with Elvis to his "knack for befriending animals." Outside of the water, the diver said there's a family of crows he feeds every morning and raccoons that come "hang out every night."</p><p>And when it comes to the following he's gained from posting about Elvis, Colubra said he's not letting the attention overshadow his friendship with the fish. "It doesn't seem real, it's kind of strange," he said. "I try to keep a humble head about it, I'm not out there seeking fame."</p><p>Colubra did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Open-air urinals and unisex changing rooms were shocking when we arrived in Europe.</li><li>The Dutch favor practicality and have a different sense of modesty than Americans.</li></ul><p>When we stepped off the train on our <a href="https://www.insider.com/differences-parenting-in-us-and-netherlands-according-to-american-mom-2021-9">first day in the Netherlands</a>, my family saw a lot of unfamiliar sights, but the one that really jumped out was an <a href="https://www.insider.com/bathrooms-around-the-world-2018-7">open-air urinal</a>. It was a grey plastic contraption divided into four stalls, and you might walk by without knowing what it was unless someone happened to be using it.</p><p>You see these all over the Netherlands, especially in areas with lots of bars or at big street parties. They're meant to keep the streets cleaner and prevent drowning accidents by people tempted to pee into the canals.</p><p>For my sons, ages 4 and 7 at the time, this open-air <em>pissoir </em>was not only fascinating but our first introduction to how much the <a href="https://www.insider.com/dutch-traditions-that-parents-in-the-us-can-copy-2021-10">Dutch favor practicality</a>. And how our ingrained sense of modesty was about to be completely rocked.</p><h2>We are a typical American family</h2><p>We're not prudes, I swear. I think we're typical Americans, and I'd never given much thought to modesty before moving abroad. But living in <keyword id="12046481" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="holland" source="Orion">Holland</keyword> showed me just how different Dutch standards are.</p><p>At my boys' elementary school, we noticed another big difference when the children changed into their gym clothes right in the classroom with everyone. The teachers didn't waste time by going to private rooms, dividing by gender to change, and then heading to the gym, it was more like "pop on some shorts and a tee-shirt and let's go."</p><p>Their classmates and teachers didn't make a big deal about it, so my boys never thought to either. It's just what they did.</p><p>The relaxed modesty standards weren't just in school. The locker rooms and even the showers at my kids' Dutch swimming lessons were combined, boys and girls. For parents who had both, that was very convenient.</p><p>At our YMCA in the States, they had all-male, all-female, and family dressing rooms with private cubicles; but for this small swim school in the Netherlands, three types of locker rooms weren't feasible.</p><p>If the locker situation wasn't already an eye-opener, we walked into the pool area to find kids swimming laps in jeans and raincoats. It turns out that for higher-level swimming classes, you practice and even get tested fully clothed to ensure you'd be OK if you fell into a canal. For the same reason, goggles weren't allowed. Talk about practical.</p><h2>My kids adapted quickly to the new <keyword id="11893304" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="lifestyle" source="Orion">lifestyle</keyword></h2><p>My boys went along with these changes and adapted quickly to what their classmates did. They didn't bat an eyelash when their female swim-class buddies didn't wear tops. They didn't argue when their swim instructor made everyone exit the pool halfway through class and lined them up to use the co-ed toilets. Just like my sons didn't question guys using open-air urinals, they thought it was kind of cool.</p><p>While my kids took everything in stride, my over 30 years of being an American took a little more time to get over.</p><p>But I respect the Dutch and their practicality, even when it comes at the cost of modesty. While I don't think I'll ever be comfortable walking by a guy peeing on the street, I can understand the need for it. Just like I had to get over the strangeness of children changing for gym class or swimming lessons in a common space.</p><p>Eventually, I came to love and appreciate the Dutch perspective. It forced me to reexamine my own cultural hang-ups and a bit of prudishness I never knew was there.</p>

"Commit to improving your <keyword id="6354750" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="health">health</keyword> by training for a sprint triathlon."</p><h3><strong>Step 1. Find a race</strong></h3><p>One of the primary reasons people don't explore triathlon training is that three sports are harder to train for than one. Goeringer pointed out that with minimal gear and focused workouts, anyone can confidently complete a sprint triathlon.</p><p>A sprint tri consists of a 750-meter swim, 20k bike ride, and a 5k run. That's half the distance of an Olympic triathlon and less than a quarter of the distance of an Ironman race. </p><p>Use the race as a carrot to incentivize your workouts, too. It may seem like a daunting task at first but as you progress, you'll start to feel more confident in your ability to complete the event. A site like <a href="https://www.trifind.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Trifind</a>, which publishes the American Triathlon Calendar, is a great place to look for a race. </p><h3><strong>Step 2. Pick out the right gear</strong></h3><p>Swimming, biking and running all require basic gear including a bathing suit, cap, and goggles for swimming, a bike and helmet for cycling, and run-specific shoes for running. Ideally, practicing each event would take you outside but as more people are urged to stay home, you'll need to get creative. </p><p>One solution is investing in gear for a home gym. This could be a stationary bike, a treadmill, or even a high-tech exercise bike from brands like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nordictrack-commercial-s22i-studio-cycle-review" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NordicTrack</a> or Peloton. There's the <a href="https://www.insider.com/peloton-digital-membership-round-up" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Peleton App</a> (currently free for the first 90 days) and even <a href="https://www.nordictrack.com/?gclid=Cj0KCQjwjcfzBRCHARIsAO-1_Op1Wk1hO9cBoV8ja6TK4j6Qke1hh-Qb4KtCT18JA2glHPm84uHfKq8aAn7CEALw_wcB" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NordicTrack 's iFit</a> app, too. </p><p>"I'm a fan of the path of least resistance," said Goeringer. "Whatever gets you on your bike, do that. Sure, the most effective workout might be a triathlon-targeted workout but consistency is key. And if there's an app, a trainer, or another tool that incentivizes you to work out, it's a good thing."</p><h3><strong>Run</strong></h3><div type="image" title="Hoka One One Carbon X 2" height="900" width="1200" msid="76433932" hostid="261"></div><p>Commercial <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-treadmill" target="_blank" rel="noopener">treadmills</a> can get expensive and they're often more than most people need. Even self-powered curved treadmills are pricey. </p><p>Thankfully, of the three triathlon sports, running is the one that's easiest to do without expensive equipment. With a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-cheap-running-shoes" target="_blank" rel="noopener">cheap pair of running shoes</a> and some <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-workout-clothes-men" target="_blank" rel="noopener">workout apparel</a>, you can easily log a few miles each day around your neighborhood. </p><h3><strong>Step 3. Start training</strong></h3><p>Goeringer says most people can train for a sprint triathlon in roughly eight weeks, depending on their level of fitness. Some may need more or less time to get in triathlon shape, but he laid out a standard baseline for what to aim for. </p><p>"For a sprint tri, if you can bike for 90 minutes, run for 5-miles non-stop, and swim for 1000 meters non-stop, you can enter a race confidently," he said.</p><p>To do this, plan two swims, two bike rides, and two 30- to 60-minute runs each week. You'll also want to do at least one 10- to 15-minute brick run (a run immediately after cycling). If you're a beginner, Goeringer suggests your goal should be to run until you complete five miles, cycle for 20 miles, and swim in open water for 1000 yards.</p><h3>Training the run </h3><p>"Once you've built resiliency, integrate faster running," advised Goeringer. </p><p>He recommends starting with cruise intervals that have you run for two minutes at an 8 out of 10 intensity, followed by one minute of running easily. Repeat that for 20 to 25 minutes. </p><p>Hill repeats are another beneficial strength and fitness building workout. Just pick a hill and run up it in an all-out sprint for 45 seconds, then take an easy jog down. Repeat these six to eight times. </p><p>"Hill runs build run strength and teach your body to recruit muscles without the trauma of a high-speed run," Goeringer added.</p><div type="image" title="Aaptiv1" height="1365" width="1820" msid="76433937" hostid="261"></div><p>Training is both a science and an art, and Goeringer makes the point that it's important to integrate recovery into your training program, too. You'll aim to build your training load each week, with two weeks of harder training followed by one week of consistent or slightly decreased training. Goeringer's rule of thumb is that as you build running mileage, don't add more than 10% run time or distance per week. </p><p>"You want to make sure your body absorbs the new activity," he said. "If you build your training load too quickly, you'll injure yourself."</p><h3><strong>Training the bike</strong></h3><p>Goeringer says to start easy and build to higher volume, focusing on frequency for the first two weeks. Then, think about integrating intensity on the bike by adding intervals to build speed and strength. </p><p>For example, ride five intervals of three minutes at a 9 intensity level and three minutes of recovery. On another day, ride three intervals of 10 minutes at an 8 intensity level followed by a gentle five-minute spin. </p><h3><strong>Training the swim</strong></h3><p>For swimming, Goeringer recommends mirroring the short intervals from your bike training. Warm-up gently with single-arm drills focusing on catch and pull, then dive into intervals. </p><p>Try five minutes of a 6 intensity followed by four minutes at a 7, 3 minutes at an 8, two minutes at a 9, and then one minute at max effort. Follow that up with one minute of low-intensity stroking between each set for rest. On another day, try 10 consecutive 100-yard laps, resting 20 seconds between each. </p><p>Unless you have safe, easy access to open water, or own an at-home swim ergometer, training for swimming is the hardest to come by while maintaining social distance. Though Goeringer supplied a workout to follow, weight training and other cardio exercises are more beneficial to your swim stamina than trying to push the limits of where you can or can't go. </p><h3><strong>The best methods for overcoming home training challenges</strong></h3><p>One of the hardest parts is getting started. It's important to remember, too, that not every training session needs to be a total killer. </p><p>"There's this idea that every time you go for a run or get on a bike, it has to be long or tough," said Goeringer. "That's not true. There's a massive benefit to just getting out and moving your body. Consistency is king."</p><p>If training indoors sounds monotonous, figure out how to find your zone. Turn on your favorite music, modify your workout into a moving meditation, or distract yourself by tuning into Netflix or your favorite podcast. Just as you adapt to this new normal, so, too, should your motivation for working out — and don't be discouraged if it takes work.</p>

How to train for a triathlon at home, according to an Ironman coach

Swimming the butterfly leg (the third of four legs), Phelps entered the race in second place to Great Britain. But in typical Phelps fashion, he used a terrific underwater kick on the turn to give Team USA a comfortable lead heading into the final leg, the freestyle.</p><p>Nathan Adrian raced out to a massive body-length lead and never looked back. Gold no. 23 for Phelps. </p><p>The relay marked the final swimming event of Rio. Phelps exits with six more medals, including five more golds. </p><p>Afterwards, Phelps' Team USA relay teammate Ryan Murphy joked that he didn't believe Phelps was actually finished swimming. Phelps, on the other hand, was more insistent that he was finally hanging up his goggles.</p><p>"I'm just ready for something different," Phelps said. </p><p>Nobody knows what that is yet, or if we'll see him in Tokyo in 2020. </p><p>One way or another, the world of sports has never seen anyone like Phelps, and it's hard to imagine we'll see someone quite so dominant for some time. Michael Phelps just ended his Olympics career in the most fitting way possible

During the winter, many of us spend too much time huddled indoors, being more sedentary than is healthy.</p><p>That's not great for our bodies or our minds, which is why so many people jump on new 'get in shape' routines as soon as nice weather hits.</p><p>Those really looking to get into shape should set a goal, something that will keep you working out regularly and force you to put a training routine on your calendar.</p><p>If you're feeling ambitious, the ideal competition may be a triathlon. The combination of running, biking, and swimming forces you to mix up your workouts, training the whole body, which will get you in great shape and could make you less vulnerable to an overuse injury.</p><p>The sport of triathlon is having a moment, says <a href="http://enduranceconcepts.com/coaching/dan-arnett/">Dan Arnett, a professional coach</a> who has competed in world championship races and Ironmans (which include a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride, and a marathon to top things off). Participation in triathlon events has skyrocketed in recent years, and now sits <a href="https://www.teamusa.org/usa-triathlon/about/multisport/demographics">at near-record levels</a>.</p><p>Business Insider spoke with Arnett about his recommendations for beginners.</p><h2>Find a race</h2><p>Triathlons come in varied distances - there are very short ones and ultra-length races like the Ironman. Start with a sprint distance, Arnett says, since "that very first competition should be about you finishing." </p><p>A sprint tri consists of a 750 meter swim, a 20 kilometer bike ride, and a 5 kilometer run - distances that are within reach for anyone in reasonable shape, with a bit of training. Arnett says to give yourself at least eight weeks, though the more time you have, the better.</p><h2>Pick a training plan - and stick to it</h2><p>"You do not need a coach," says this professional coach who gets paid to work with triathletes. "What you need is a plan." </p><p> </p><p>There are plenty of free plans online that will tell you everything you need to know, he says. Some are available on sites like <a href="http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/">BeginnerTriathlete</a>, and there's also free software on sites like <a href="http://www.trainingpeaks.com/">TrainingPeaks</a>. You should schedule workouts in your calendar as if they're meetings you can't skip - otherwise it's too easy to procrastinate.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://flic.kr/p/6Z7tqs">Flickr/Nathan Rupert</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Luckily, injury rates aren't particularly high for triathletes. Since the training requires you to strengthen different parts of your body, overuse injuries are <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24102132">far less common</a> than they are for <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24287220">single-discipline athletes</a>. Still, don't forget to let your body rest.</p><p>By saying beginners don't need a coach, Arnett isn't trying to put himself out of business. As he explains it, the average person shouldn't do their first race shooting to end up on the winner's podium. All you need is a training schedule that will get your body ready for the competition. Investing a ton of money in an expensive coach is overkill before you know whether you like the sport.</p><h2>Get only the essential equipment</h2><p>The same philosophy applies to equipment, says Arnett. Triathlons tend to draw wealthy participants, with a <a href="https://www.teamusa.org/USA-Triathlon/About/Multisport/Demographics">median income of $126,000</a>. <span>Arnett says the moment when </span>people are pulling off wetsuits and jumping on bikes "can look like the GDP of a small country in transition."</p><p>Looking around at some participants can make you think you need a bike worth thousands of dollars, but Arnett says he did his first few races on a mountain bike. You can use an old road bike - just make sure it's safely tuned up and give it a final test the day before your race.</p><p>You'll also need goggles and a swim cap, and Arnett recommends investing in a pair of good running shoes. The camaraderie can help you push through a workout, and you'll also benefit from other members' knowledge of swimming techniques, bike repair, and race-day strategies (many people will tell you to arrive early, for example, and to bring a headlamp so you can see as you set up your gear). Training with friends and doing a occasional run with your partner  - even if they aren't participating - helps, too.</p><p>I followed Arnett's advice last year, and this tip was helpful as well: If your race has an open-water swim, get as much open-water practice as possible. A murky lake or ocean full of people is very different from a pool - it can be disorienting if you don't have enough practice navigating. And if you don't feel comfortable during the swimming portion, remember that it's okay to stay at the edge or back of the pack. <p>Judah's insights into Putin's life come from former prime ministers, current ministers, regional governors, senior bureaucrats, close advisers, and personal aides to the president.</p>
<p>Here's what he learned:</p>
<p><strong>Putin sleeps in.</strong> He wakes up late in the morning and eats his first meal at about noon. He always has cottage cheese with his breakfast, and he also likes quails' eggs and fruit juice.</p>
<p><strong>He does "much of Russia's thinking" done in a pool.</strong> Putin always goes for a swim after breakfast because he likes to get alone time in the water. He wears goggles and swims in a front crawl.</p>
<p><strong>He does a daily "cleanse."</strong> He works out after his swim, preferring weights over cardio in the gym, and then immerses himself into both hot and cold baths.</p>
<p><strong>He doesn't like the internet.</strong> His offices don't have TVs and he uses "only the most secure technologies" to communicate, which to Putin means paper and fixed-line, Soviet-era telephones. Putin's advisers sometimes show him satirical online videos that make fun of him, but he "rarely uses the internet."</p>
<p><strong>He's high maintenance</strong><strong>.</strong> When he leaves Russia, Putin ships in Russian cooks, cleaners, and waitresses for his trip. When he stays in hotels, his team removes their sheets and toiletries and replaces them with Kremlin-approved items under anti-contamination seals. He doesn't eat any foreign food that hasn't been cleared by the Kremlin.</p>
<p><strong>He doesn't like spending time in the Kremlin.</strong> Putin lives in a palace outside Moscow because he dislikes the traffic, pollution, and "human congestion" of the city. He doesn't like visiting the Kremlin either, and prefers to work at his estate.</p>
<p><strong>His inner circle calls him <span>"Tsar."</span></strong> They used to call him boss.</p>
<p><strong>He doesn't have much of a personal life.</strong> Putin's parents are dead and he and his wife divorced. He has two daughters, but they don't live in Russia. He reportedly has women - models, photographers, and gymnasts - "come to him at night," but these are just rumors. Putin does, however, take comfort in his canine companion, a black Lab.</p>
<p><strong>His life is monotonous, but he fancies himself a hard worker. </strong>Putin claims he "works harder than any leader since Stalin."</p>
