<ul class="summary-list"><li>LIV Golf has shaken up the sport with huge paydays for players and promising to fans, "Golf, but louder."</li><li>I attended the LIV tournament held at Trump National in Bedminster, New Jersey over the weekend to see the product in person.</li></ul><p>BEDMINSTER, NEW JERSEY — <em>Golf, but louder.</em></p><p>That is the slogan, and promise, of LIV Golf, <a href="https://www.insider.com/liv-golf-tour-pga-exodus-shows-saudi-money-power-2022-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the Saudi-backed, breakaway league</a> that has already shaken up the top-tier of the sport. In just a few months, <a href="https://www.insider.com/liv-golf-top-100-players-strength-of-field-2022-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">LIV has poached some of the top players in the world</a> away from the PGA Tour, as well as several big names that are still impressive draws for fans despite having their best days behind them.</p><p>Over the weekend, LIV hosted its third event at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey. Walking the course for the final round on Sunday, the atmosphere felt like a mix of Coachella and a Trump rally, with some golf thrown in for good measure.</p><p>In person, the LIV experience is somewhat surreal. Throughout the final round on Sunday, speakers continued to blare music across the course, even as players hit shots that would go on to decide millions in potential earnings.</p><p>"It's golf, but louder," I overhead one fan say walking past the practice green. "It really is," his friend replied. "They weren't exaggerating."</p><h2>At times it felt like Trump was the biggest star on the course</h2><p>At the first tee, <a href="https://www.insider.com/photos-trump-liv-golf-carts-pro-am-2022-7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">former President Trump greeted fans</a> who had come out to see the event. Trump eventually obliged, earning a cheer from the crowd. The woman turned to celebrate. "I need a beer!" she exclaimed.</p><p>In the background, Coldplay's "Adventure of a Lifetime" transitioned into Justin Timberlake's "Can't Stop the Feeling," which in turn gave way to Daft Punk's "Get Lucky."</p><div type="image" title="A woman celebrates with her newly signed Trump hat." height="1680" width="2240" msid="93299030" hostid="261" sizebytes="259758"></div><p>After Trump left the first tee, the crowd thinned out significantly by the time the next group was ready to tee off.</p><p>If you've ever wanted to get up close with some of the best golfers in the world, attending a LIV event offers you quite an opportunity to do so.</p><div type="image" title="The first tee during the final round of LIV Bedminster." height="1680" width="2240" msid="93299032" hostid="261" sizebytes="403654"></div><p>As Trump made his way away from the action, I walked towards the course.</p><h2>LIV Golf is attempting to bring a festival atmosphere to the sport, similar to the recently revamped NFL Draft</h2><p>Across the course, the energy was like that of the early afternoon hours at a music festival, but with Nike ballcaps replacing flower crowns, and performance polos in place of throwback basketball jerseys. The Chainsmokers were even scheduled to play after the conclusion of the event.</p><p>Fans walked the course to find their favorite players after LIV's shotgun start, carrying light beers and seltzers as they enjoyed the sunshine. It felt similar to the effort that <a href="https://www.insider.com/nfl-draft-winners-losers-first-round-2022-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the NFL has recent put into the draft</a>, turning what could be an internal spreadsheet into a party that stops in a new city every year. Sure, there is golf here, but there's other stuff too.</p><p>LIV Golf's design team has done well to create an overarching aesthetic that was displayed throughout the course, with many Instagram-ready spots for fans to snap photos. </p><div type="image" title="Fans take photos next to the LIV Golf logo." height="1680" width="2240" msid="93299035" hostid="261" sizebytes="705266"></div><p>The music did not let up.</p><p>Early in the day, I watched as Louis Oosthuizen eyed up a tricky 12-footer for a birdie with a song blasting in the background. My mind kept waiting for a hush to fall over the crowd, but it never came. Oosthuizen pushed his putt just a bit wide.</p><p>As one moved away from the epicenter of the course, the music faded a bit, but never fully, with speakers strategically placed across the course.</p><p>By this point, the political rally energy had given way nearly entirely to that of Golfapalooza. While one could still see a good amount of Trump hats and shirts around the grounds, most of the times an overeager fan attempted to start chants of "Four more years!" or <a href="https://www.insider.com/lets-go-brandon-flags-confederate-flag-ban-nascar-races-2022-3">"Let's go, Brandon!"</a> they would peter out quickly.</p><p>Instead, people relaxed and watched golf. Nearly every fan I spoke with said they were having a good time, with some buying tickets online for $75, and others getting them for free through friends or friends of friends.</p><p>I met Mark and Skyler, waiting along the sixth fairway. They had come early and gotten some free swag from LIV as a result — a water bottle, coozies, tees, and ball markers. It was their first time attending a golf tournament in person.</p><p>"It being close definitely helps," Mark told me. "Thought it would be a fun Sunday."</p><p>LIV Golf made an effort to target locations that might be overlooked by the PGA Tour, and several fans noted that as a reason they were out to enjoy the LIV event.</p><p>Eventually, Mark and Skyler's friend Jack came to meet us. Unlike his buddies, he had been to a PGA Tour event before, and said he was having a better time with LIV.</p><p>"More fun," Jack said, when asked the biggest difference between the events. "There's more stuff to do. When you walked in it didn't feel like a golf event."</p><div type="image" title="LIV Golf's Fan Village." height="1680" width="2240" msid="93299036" hostid="261" sizebytes="281400"></div><p>There certainly was plenty to do.</p><p>Should fans tire of walking the course, they could head to the Fan Village, a centrally located hub that featured a bar, food trucks, and a few air conditioned tents to help cool off.</p><p>Inside the tents, fans could get a few drives in on a golf simulator. Jacob was proud to slam this one 300 yards as he and two friends took some swings while awaiting the leaders to make their way towards the 18th hole.</p><div type="image" title="Jacob takes a swing on a simulator at LIV Golf's event in Bedminster, New Jersey." height="1333" width="1777" msid="93299037" hostid="261" sizebytes="177242"></div><p>The food trucks were also a nice festival touch, and they weren't stuck solely in the Fan Village, but placed throughout the course.</p><p>Wherever you saw a generic concessions stand, there was a food truck option parked nearby.</p><div type="image" title="A food truck serves fans at LIV Golf Bedminster." height="1680" width="2240" msid="93299039" hostid="261" sizebytes="686328"></div><p>Prices were tough, but not dissimilar from what you might find at other sporting events.</p><div type="image" title="LIV Golf concessions prices." height="1680" width="2240" msid="93299040" hostid="261" sizebytes="518632"></div><p>While everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves on the course, one thing that stood out was how little the golf seemed to matter.</p><p>LIV has touted its team competition as a differentiator between itself and the PGA Tour. With time, the teams could come to mean something, but this early in its existence, they still feel a bit silly.</p><p>"The Majesticks are my team," I heard one fan saying by the practice green upon entry.</p><p>"Oh yeah, I love Lee Westwood," his friend replied.</p><p>"Oh is he on that team too?!" the first fan said.</p><p>Westwood is the captain of the Majesticks, as one more fan now assuredly knows.</p><h2>LIV Golf is here, but does it mean anything?</h2><p>Another aspect of the golf struggling to find meaning was the fact that LIV Golf's format is difficult to track. Because of the league's shotgun starts, it is extremely tough to track which players are where and how likely they are to catch the leaders.</p><p>Despite several large scoreboards that were updating with each passing hole, it was difficult to tell where the action was on the course.</p><p>Further, the facts of LIV Golf make it difficult to engage with at times.</p><p>On what was the last round of the event, when everything is set to be decided, very few players were within striking distance of the leaders. Knowing that most of these players recently signed guaranteed deals with LIV worth as much as — if not more than — the prizes they are playing for, it can be tough to feel like there's much action to be had on the course.</p><p>The lack of energy could be felt across the course, for fans that were following any groups aside from the leaders or Phil Mickelson, who carried a large set of supporters with him hole-by-hole despite finishing the weekend six strokes over par.</p><p>Fans Peter and Tom set up camp on the 11th fairway and decided to watch the entire field play through the hole. Aside from the big groups, the scene was sometimes rather grim.</p><p>"It must be demoralizing," Peter told me, pointing out to Jason Kokrak, who was playing in his first LIV event after making the jump from the PGA Tour as the 37th ranked player in the world. Their cheers could be heard by players on the course extremely clearly.</p><p>Still, the crowds were gathered where the action was. By the time I made my way back to the 18th green, the closest I could get was on the other side of a water feature with a camera rig in my way.</p><p>As someone who has on several occasions settled for obstructed views during the headliner's set at a festival, I made peace with my place.</p><div type="image" title="My view of the 18th green." height="1680" width="2240" msid="93299045" hostid="261" sizebytes="367200"></div><p>After a while Trump was back on the green waving to the crowd.</p><p>Chants of "Let's Go Brandon!" broke out again. Henrik Stenson, who was making his LIV debut this week after being stripped of the European Ryder Cup captaincy for his decision to join the new league, was leading the tournament by two strokes. The production of it all was an impressive feat, as well. It's clear that LIV is putting up plenty of money to throw its events in addition to all the cash it's giving its players directly.</p><p>Still, LIV has a long way to go in terms of golf. While its roster has improved with each passing event, there still isn't enough star power to make the events feel like anything more than a supersized exhibition.</p><p><em>Golf, but louder.</em></p><p>They have the loud part down; the golf could still use some work.</p>

LIV Golf's Trump course event was part-political rally, part-music fest, and part-exhibition — what worked and what didn't

<img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/57db3240077dcc6b138b61fc-1022/screen shot 2013-04-05 at 9.29.54 pm.png" alt="Michael Rothenberg" /><ul class="summary-list"><li>A Federal judge has ordered former venture capitalist Mike Rothenberg to pay more than $31 million after he was charged by the SEC for "misappropriating" millions of dollars from his firm's funds. </li><li>Rothenberg settled with the SEC last year, a deal in which he admitted liability and agreed to pay disgorgement, aka, the repayment of "ill-gotten gains," according to new court documents.</li><li>Rothenberg opposed the sums of money that SEC was seeking but the judge sided with the SEC.</li><li>Rotenberg was a former darling of the VC world, rising to notoriety after raising his first investment fund while living out of a suitcase and then gaining a reputation for extravagant parties. </li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/prime?module=article&amp;area=summary">Click here for more BI Prime stories.</a></li></ul><p>A federal judge has ordered former venture capitalist Mike Rothenberg to pay more than $31 million after the SEC alleged he "misappropriated money" from his firm's funds, according <a href="https://www.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.cand.330830/gov.uscourts.cand.330830.100.0.pdf">to new court documents</a>. </p><p>The SEC charged Rothenberg with violating securities laws last year and he settled, striking a deal in October, 2018, in which he admitted liability and agreed to pay disgorgement, aka the repayment of "ill-gotten gains," according to the new court documents filed in US District Court of Northern California on Friday.</p><p>The SEC was seeking nearly $18.8 million in disgorgement, plus another nearly $3.7 million in interest. The court also granted the SEC's request for an additional $9 million in fines. </p><p>Rothenberg opposed those damages, arguing that he didn't misappropriate the funds, didn't misspend them, didn't personally benefit from the alleged misappropriation and that the fund's investors made money on the fund.</p><p>But the judge sided with the SEC, saying that Rothenberg had already admitted liability in the settlement agreement, and that he failed to provide evidence to support his arguments.</p><p>"The SEC, however, points to evidence that Rothenberg altered his accounting records and created fake documents to conceal his actions on multiple occasions. ... This evidence, coupled with Rothenberg's ongoing inability or unwillingness to take responsibility for his actions and recognize the wrongfulness of his conduct, demonstrates that a $9 million civil penalty is appropriate,"  Judge Jon S. Tiger wrote.</p><p>The SEC was not seeking damages against the company, now known as RVMC, because it is no longer controlled by Rothenberg, the court documents said.</p><p>Rothenberg Ventures was the talk of Silicon Valley back in the early part of the decade, after its young founder, the charismatic Mike Rothenberg, raised his first fund while living <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fred-wilson-is-wrong-its-great-to-be-a-young-vc-2014-4">out of his suitcase, couch surfing</a>. He eventually had nearly 200 investors and more than $64 million in assets, the SEC said.</p><p>He became known for extravagant parties and a big lifestyle. In 2016 <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2016/08/18/at-rothenberg-ventures-the-rise-and-fall-of-a-virtual-gatsby/">Techcrunch reported</a> that he enjoyed tickets to the Golden Globes, executive producing a video for Coldplay, a suite at the Super Bowl, and a $2,000-a-month membership with a private-jet service.</p><p>In 2016, the firm had run out of money and put all of its employees except its lawyer on unpaid leave, Backchannel reported and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rothenberg-ventures-implosion-lp-letter-2016-9">Business Insider confirmed </a>with people knowledgeable of the matter.</p><p>Whistleblowers went to the authorities and the SEC investigated, hiring a forensic account. When it charged him, the SEC <a href="https://www.sec.gov/litigation/litreleases/2018/lr24367.htm">claimed that</a>, over a three-year period, "Rothenberg and his firm misappropriated millions of dollars from the funds, including an estimated $7 million of excess fees, which Rothenberg used to support personal business ventures he claimed were self-funded and to pay for private parties and events at high-end resorts and Bay Area sporting arenas."</p><p>The 2018 SEC settlement also barred Rothenberg from the brokerage and investment advisory business for five years, after which he will have a right to apply again.</p><p>Rothenberg did not respond to a request for comment.</p>

<img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5df3f557fd9db262dc7e39a4-2400/zkbychasejarvis1.jpg" alt="Zoe Keating 1" /><p class="source"><span>Chase Jarvis</span></p><ul class="summary-list"><li>Music streaming services shot to popularity this decade, but they don't have a good reputation among all artists.</li><li>Superstars from Taylor Swift to Coldplay have publicly feuded with Spotify over music royalties, and some independent artists in particular take issue with the way streamers pay artists.</li><li>The common payment system is known as pro rata, and a professor of music business at the Berklee College of Music said it favors popular artists significantly. </li><li>Cellist Zoë Keating is well-known in the music world for releasing her annual streaming royalties, and this year she gave Business Insider a look at what she earned from Spotify, Apple Music, and more.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/prime">Click here for more BI Prime articles</a>.</li></ul><p>It's no secret that major streaming services aren't always popular with artists. </p><p>Taylor Swift famously <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/taylor-swift-pulled-all-of-her-albums-from-spotify-2014-11">pulled her entire catalog</a> from Spotify in 2014, launching a three-year dispute over royalties.  Coldplay <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-coldplay-album-wont-be-on-spotify-2015-12">withheld</a> its "A Head Full of Dreams" album a year later because Spotify refused to make it available to paying subscribers only. And Jay-Z <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jay-z-has-pulled-most-of-his-music-from-spotify-2017-4">yanked</a> most of his discography from Spotify in favor of his own streaming service, Tidal, in 2017 (although his albums never left Apple Music).</p><p>All of these artists have since reconciled with Spotify - at least enough to make their music available on the platform - <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jay-z-back-on-spotify-2019-12">Jay-Z</a> as recently as last month. </p><p>But some independent performers still feel they're not being fairly compensated by streaming services. Their argument, though multifaceted, boils down to the system Spotify and most other leading streaming services like Apple Music use to pay artists: It's called pro rata.</p><p>Under the pro rata system, streaming services take all the money generated from listeners, total it up, then divide it proportionally by listening time. This potentially leaves less well-known artists with a smaller piece of the revenue pie than they would have if they were paid on digital downloads.</p><p>"If you're a big artist, you're vastly overpaid," said George Howard, a professor of music business at the Berklee College of Music. "The internet was supposed to be the great democratizer, but all it's done is consolidate."</p><p>Smaller artists often favor a user-centric system that would result in more linear pay based on exactly what each user is listening to. </p><p>The user-centric system means that if one user pays $9.99 a month for Spotify Premium but only listens to independent cellist Zoë Keating, that user's $9.99 would be paid exclusively to Keating.</p><p>"These companies are taking power away from listeners, because listeners don't have any say where their money goes," Keating told Business Insider. "If you only listen to me, I should get all the percentage of the money you spend on music."</p><h2>How artists make (and lose) money from streaming services</h2><p>Streaming services pay artists a few different types of royalties for their music, but the most significant payout comes from sound recording royalties, the royalties paid to the owner of the copyright on the recording of a song. </p><p>Sound recording royalties are about four times higher than royalties paid to the rights holder of the composition, for instance, Howard said. (Some artists hold all of their rights.)</p><p>For independent artists like Keating who aren't signed to a record label, that money ideally gets paid directly to her. But Keating uses a distributor to make sure her music is accessible on a wide range of services, so that distributor is also entitled to a portion of her royalties. </p><p>Keating uses CD Baby, which collects 9% of her monthly royalties, and RouteNote, which takes $30 per album per year.</p><p>That left her with an average income of $1,693.18 per month from streaming royalties from January to September in 2019, according to data Keating provided exclusively to Business Insider. </p><p>Keating was streamed a total of 2,022,411 times on Spotify during that time period, and earned an average of $759.34 per month from the company. That month, she was paid $753.26 by Spotify, or $0.004 per stream under the pro rata system.</p><p>Earnings per stream differ artist to artist and month to month when services pay pro rata. These numbers are only representative of Keating's earnings.</p><p>Spotify royalties account for the most significant portion of Keating's monthly streaming revenue. Almost 45% of her streaming income each month comes from Spotify. Another 38% comes from Apple Music, about 8% comes from Pandora, and Amazon Music generates about 6%.</p><p>Keating's music is available on international streaming services like Anghami and Kanjian Music as well as less widely used platforms like Tidal, but Apple Music and Spotify alone make up more than 80% of her monthly streaming income.</p><p><em></em></p><em><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5e14faf9f442314195617054-1667/monthly stream revenue.png" alt="monthly stream revenue" /><p class="source"><span>Ruobing Su/Business Insider</span></p></em><p>Since Keating plays instrumental music, she said she earns the vast majority of her income from synchronization licensing when her songs are used in movies or TV shows, not from streaming royalties. </p><p>Keating also relies on <a href="http://zoekeating.com/">album sales, merchandise, and live shows</a> to earn money from her music. </p><p><a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12-ChfIWchHRp9WUCb2qvUgzhCP85AiBG6QmI2WFYskY/edit?usp=sharinghttps://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12-ChfIWchHRp9WUCb2qvUgzhCP85AiBG6QmI2WFYskY/edit?usp=sharing">Here's a more complete look at Keating's streaming earnings, broken down month by month for 14 streaming services.</a></p><h2>Streaming is here to say, but it's not sustainable for independent artists, Keating says</h2><p>Back when most people listened to music by purchasing individual songs on iTunes, Keating said she was able to secure a mortgage on her house based on her iTunes royalties alone.</p><p>"I used to joke that iTunes paid the mortgage, except it wasn't a joke," she said. "When my husband and I bought our house in California we were both self-employed, and we were able to show the monthly revenue royalties that I got from iTunes to show the bank that I was making money from Apple."</p><p>Music streaming isn't going away, nor should it, but streaming services could do more to support the artists that prop them up, Keating said, even if they choose to stick with the pro rata system.</p><p>Streaming platforms could allow for artists to link out to their websites or ticket sales, or even encourage listeners to buy albums to contribute to artist Patreons.</p><p>"We need artists to earn a living," Keating said. One person told TechCrunch that the SEC is looking at the firm after an employee alerted the agency to possible wire fraud and <span>breach of fiduciary duty.</span><span></span></p><p>TechCrunch detailed Rothernberg's outlandish expenditures, including but not limited to:</p><ul><li>Tickets to the Golden Globes.</li><li>A birthday party for actor Chace Crawford.</li><li>Executive producing a video for Coldplay.</li><li>A suite at the Super Bowl.</li><li>A $2,000-a-month membership with a private jet service.</li></ul><p>For some perspective: TechCrunch did some calculations based on the amount the firm has under management, and Rothenberg likely has less than $940,000 to fund the entire operation. Mr Corbyn spoke to an audience of over 1,200 people as candidates continue to campaign for the leadership of the Labour Party the results of which are due to be announced on September 12."><p class="source"><span>Rob Stothard/Getty Images</span></p><p class="caption">Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.</p></img></div><p></p></div></div><p>Ticket-holders for this year's Glastonbury music and arts festival will have the opportunity to enjoy an on-stage performance&#xa0;from Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.</p><p>The Labour leader has been asked to address over 130,000 fans from the festival's largest stage on the final day of the performances, <a href="http://home.bt.com/news/uk-news/jeremy-corbyn-and-john-mcdonnell-invited-to-speak-at-glastonbury-festival-11364049873092" target="_blank">sources told</a> the Press Association.</p><p>Corbyn will attend the festival along with shadow chancellor&#xa0;<span>John McDonnell, who according to Press Association will speak at the Left Field Stage.&#xa0;</span></p><p>A <a href="http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/jeremy-corbyn-rock-glastonbury-billy-7683445" target="_blank">Mirror article</a> published on Sunday&#xa0;claimed&#xa0;Corbyn was due&#xa0;to appear on the Left Field stage to address the issue of nuclear weapons&#xa0;an after accepting an invitation from&#xa0;Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament&#xa0;(CND).</p><p>The stage - <a href="http://www.glastonburyfestivals.co.uk/areas/left-field/" target="_blank">a smaller, alternative option to the famous Pyramid Stage</a> - plays host to guest speakers who are invited by left-wing activist and musician Billy Bragg to speak about issues like social justice, the economy and the future of <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword> socialism.</p><p>However, according to information published by Press Association on Tuesday morning, the opposition leader could be speaking to over 100,000 people on the stage which will be used by acts like Muse, Coldplay and Adele across the weekend.&#xa0;</p><p>An appearance from the Labour leader on Glastonbury's premier stage would be represent a huge political gesture on behalf of the Eavis family which organises the festival in Somerset, England.&#xa0;</p><p>The festival has been closely-tied with left-wing <keyword id="6358883" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Politics">politics</keyword> throughout its history. </p><p><span>The Campaign for Nuclear&#xa0;Disarmament (CND) - which has played a major role in bringing Corbyn and McDonnell to the festival at&#xa0;Worthy Farm&#xa0;- has been been part of&#xa0;Glastonbury since its beginnings.
