Srinagar freezes at minus 5.5, coldest this season so far

The new year arrived in <keyword id="6354495" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="kashmir" source="Orion">Kashmir</keyword> on a freezing note as the famous tourist resorts of <keyword id="15864375" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="gulmarg-and-pahalgam" source="Orion">Gulmarg and Pahalgam</keyword> experienced the coldest night of the season so far, officials said on Sunday. Pahalgam in south Kashmir's Anantnag district, which also serves as a base camp for the annual <keyword id="44352" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="amarnath-yatra" source="Orion">Amarnath Yatra</keyword>, recorded a low of minus 9.4 degrees Celsius -– the lowest there so far this season. The resort was also the coldest recorded place in Jammu and Kashmir. The minimum in <keyword id="108228" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="gulmarg" source="Orion">Gulmarg</keyword>, the famous ski resort in north Kashmir's Baramulla district, was minus 8.2 degrees Celsius - the season's lowest, officials said. The MeT office has forecast a dry weather over the next few days for the region leading to colder nights and slightly warmer days. The mercury in Srinagar settled above the freezing point for the second consecutive night. The city registered a low of 0.5 degree Celsius. Qazigund, the gateway town to the Valley, was another place where the mercury settled above the freezing point last night. It registered a low of 0.3 degrees Celsius. In Kupwara, a frontier district, the minimum temperature settled at minus 4.5 degrees Celsius, while Kokernag in south Kashmir recorded a low of minus 0.5 degree Celsius, the officials said. Kashmir is currently under the grip of Chilla-i-Kalan, the 40-day harshest weather period when the chances of snowfall are maximum and most frequent. 'Chilla-i-Kalan' begins on December 21 and ends on January 30. The cold wave continues even after that with a 20-day-long 'Chillai-Khurd' (small cold) and a 10-day-long 'Chillai-Bachha' (baby cold) following it. Most areas of the valley received snowfall on Thursday.

At minus 6.6 degrees Celsius on Saturday, Srinagar recorded the coldest night of the season so far, while the temperature in Ladakh's <keyword id="6522554" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="drass-town">Drass town</keyword> to minus 29. "Srinagar recorded minus 6.6 as the <keyword id="10459092" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="minimum-temperature-today">minimum temperature today</keyword> which is the coldest recorded so far this season. This record was surpassed during the last 10 years on December 25, 2018 when the minimum had dropped to minus 7.7 in Srinagar," an official of the MET Department said.  The minimum temperature of Patna city plummeted to 6.8 degrees Celsius. Gaya was the coldest place in the state with a low of 5.3 degrees Celsius. With the number of COVID-19 cases on the decline, the <keyword id="480052" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ahmednagar-district" source="Orion">Ahmednagar district</keyword> administration has decided to allow 10,000 devotees per day to take <keyword id="12548956" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="darshan-of-Saibaba" source="Orion">darshan of Saibaba</keyword> at the famous <keyword id="901109" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shirdi-shrine" source="Orion">Shirdi shrine</keyword> who possess offline passes, as per an official order. The district administration had on October 6 issued an order allowing 15,000 devotees who possessed online passes to take darshan per day, but in view of the fall in the cases, a proposal to allow more devotees possessing offline passes was received by authorities. As the online booking for 15,000 devotees will continue, it means a total of 25,000 devotees can now take darshan of Saibaba every day. "As per the decision, taken in a meeting, the Saibaba Temple Trust has been permitted to allow 10,000 devotees on daily basis through the offline system while following all the <keyword id="9353163" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="COVID-19-norms" source="Orion">COVID-19 norms</keyword>," said the official order issued by Ahmednagar district collector Rajendra Bhosale. The temple trust will have to give an undertaking that it would be following all the COVID-19 rules prescribed by the administration and the Maharashtra government, it said. During pre-pandemic times, lakhs of devotees used to visit Shirdi every day. Shri Saibaba Sansthan Trust said it will set up counters in Shirdi for distributing free offline passes for devotees who have to show their Aadhaar cards. The number of COVID-19 infections in Maharashtra continues to remain under 1,000 per day. On Tuesday, the state reported 886 coronavirus positive cases and 34 fatalities, taking the tally to 66,25,872 and the toll to 1,40,636, as per the health department.
