That puts this year as the third coldest February since we started recording temperatures in Central Park in 1869. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Residents of the Northeastern US are probably tired of being told to bundle up - but another winter storm is getting ready to sweep through this weekend, bringing the potential for some of the coldest weather the region has seen in the past 20 years.</p><p>The <a href="http://www.weather.gov/">National Weather Service</a> is warning of dangerous wind chills in the mid-Atlantic region through New England. The frigid conditions come ahead of another coastal storm, which the Service predicts will bring heavy snow to New England this weekend.</p><p>Temperatures are expected to drop through the weekend and will likely hit their lowest by Sunday night or early Monday morning, warming back up again Monday and Tuesday.</p><p>At the lowest possible forecast, many cities in the Northeast, including Boston, Hartford, and maybe even New York City, could experience temperatures below freezing.</p><p>The GIF below, from the National Weather Service, shows the minimum potential temperatures for the Northeast between now and Tuesday night.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Add in the wind chill factor, and Northeasterners could be suffering through some seriously cold conditions. New York City and Boston could both experience a wind chill value of 30 below at the coldest.</p><p><a href="http://www.weather.com/storms/winter/news/winter-storm-neptune-blizzard-boston-snow-new-england">The Weather Channel reported</a> that "New York could have its coldest day in over two decades," depending on how fast temperatures fall. Compare this weekend's forecasted low, Sunday night's <a href="http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?zoneid=NYZ072#.VN5bO7DF_YB">0 degrees Fahrenheit</a>, to New York City's <a href="http://www.weather.gov/media/okx/Climate/CentralPark/nycnormals.pdf">average minimum temperature</a> in February: about 29 degrees Fahrenheit.</p><p>At the very least, this weekend will probably bring the coldest weather of the season to many cities. In addition, heavy snow will batter New England again starting Saturday - Boston, which has already received record amounts of snow this month - is expected to get at least six more inches this weekend, if not another foot.</p><p>For some, the icy weather may be a good excuse to cuddle up with someone special this Valentine's Day weekend. This weekend, parts of the Northeast could be the coldest they've been in 'over two decades'

<p>Even though this weekend will mark the first outdoor Super Bowl game played in a cold-weather city since the NFL was created 93 years ago, it's probably not going to be the coldest Super Bowl ever.</p>
<p>The weather on Sunday is actually shaping up to be pleasant compared to the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-a-polar-vortex-2014-1" target="_parent">polar vortex</a> and unusually freezing temperatures that have been ravaging the northeast recently. The weather predictor <a href="http://forecast.io/#/f/40.8345,-74.0983/1391317200" target="_parent">forecast.io</a> is projecting that as of now the temperature will be around 41 degrees at kickoff. The coldest Super Bowl so far happened back in 1972 in New Orleans when it was 39 degrees at kickoff.</p>
<p>According to <a href="http://www.slate.com/blogs/future_tense/2014/01/31/super_bowl_xlviii_forecast_it_won_t_be_as_cold_as_in_new_orleans_in_1972.html" target="_parent">meteorologist Eric Holthaus</a>, the snowstorm that just passed to the north of the stadium was followed with a southern breeze that will surround the area with insulating clouds, creating a pocket of warm air just in time for the weekend.</p>
<p>Climatologists from the New Jersey Weather &amp; Climate Network have put together this <a href="http://climate.rutgers.edu/njwxnet/" target="_parent">weather tracker</a> that will monitor weather around MetLife stadium and even includes hour-by-hour weather predictions during the game itself.</p>
<p>The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is showing that a snowstorm is likely this weekend, but should hit safely north of MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. Here's what <a href="http://www.weather.com/video/super-bowl-forecast-43924" target="_parent">weather.com</a> is showing for Super Bowl Sunday:</p>

At least one meteorologist is warning that the frigid temperatures following the storm could be "literally the worst you've ever seen," with low temperatures not seen in decades. </p><p>Gary Szatkowski, a meteorologist who spent 35 years with the National Weather Service, tweeted on Wednesday morning that the snowfall associated with the storm isn't the biggest issue.</p><p>"<span>There's a strong tendency to focus on the snow amounts, but please keep in mind the bitter cold and very low wind chills which follow this storm," Szatkowski <a href="https://twitter.com/GarySzatkowski/status/948549320034455552">said</a>. "It may literally be the worst you've ever seen." </span><span></span></p><p><span>While 'bomb cyclones' - the type of storm that's heading toward the Northeast - aren't particularly uncommon, the temperatures this storm will bring to the region will be far colder than a similar storm that hit the region in November 2014. That storm, popularly known as the 'polar vortex,' dumped 65 inches of snow on Buffalo, New York, and brought temperatures across New York and the Northeast into the single digits for a few days. </span></p><p><span>The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, and parts of Massachusetts as of Wednesday. </span></p><p><span>The upcoming frigid weekend won't be coldest the region has ever experienced, however. On February 9, 1943, the mercury hit 15 degrees below zero - the coldest day, before the windchill, in New York City's history, <a href="http://www.silive.com/news/2016/02/10_coldest_days_on_record.html">according to AccuWeather</a>. Less than a week later, the city experienced the eighth coldest day in its history, with a low of 8 degrees below zero.</span></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>AP</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p><span>The coming storm, which is creeping up the East Coast, is set to unload up to a foot of snow across parts of Southern New England and Long Island on Thursday, according to the NWS. New York City, Philadelphia, and much of New Jersey are only expected to receive a few inches, but after the snow falls, the storm will pull a frigid Arctic air mass over region. That will likely plunge temperatures to the single digits on Friday and Saturday nights.</span></p><p><span>By Thursday night, temperatures are expected to plummet to an average low of 10 degrees across the region, with gusts of winds up to 33 miles per hour. That could make it feel as cold as -14 Fahrenheit with the windchill. The NWS predicts the snow will stop falling on Thursday evening. The Mayo Clinic warns that it's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/when-is-it-too-cold-to-go-outside-2018-1">too dangerous to do any sort of outdoor workout</a> once the thermometer dips below zero. A separate storm is expected to bring icy conditions to much of the South before hitting the Northeast. </p><p>If the two storms converge on Saturday as anticipated in the forecast, Accuweather projects intense snowfall, dangerous road conditions, and flight delays from the Mid-Atlantic to New England on a busy travel day. </p><p>The storms come on the heels of a much colder-than-average Christmas across the US. The National Weather Service is warning of "excessive" cold risk in Chicago and the Upper Midwest throughout New Year's Day, with temperatures sinking to -19 Farenheit with the windchill on Tuesday.</p><p>Temperatures across the Midwest and Northeast are expected to be well below average throughout the week and on New Year's Day as well.</p><p>A low jet stream is bringing Arctic winds across the region, which is why Accuweather has predicted that temperatures could be up to 20 degrees Farenheit below normal for this time of year in major cities like New York City, Philadelphia, and St. Louis. </p><p>According to the National Weather Service, temperatures aren't expected to rise much out of the 20s for the remainder of the week. Millions of people are bracing for a snowy New Year's weekend with super-cold weather and potential travel delays

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Fans at the subfreezing Chiefs-Dolphins playoff game in January suffered frostbite. </li><li>Some of the fans had fingers and toes amputated, a Missouri hospital said.</li></ul><p>Some fans who attended the freezing playoff game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins in January had to get amputations after suffering from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/treatments/how-to-treat-frostbite">frostbite</a>.</p><p>A Missouri hospital said it treated several dozen people who were impacted by the cold snap in January. Some of those patients were from the NFL playoff game on January 13, <a target="_blank" href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-dolphins-fans-frostbite-amputations-arrowhead-stadium-6c46520e3c2ed0adcb8014c03be731c7">The Associated Press</a> reported.</p><p>Research Medical Center told the AP it performed amputations on 12 patients, though the hospital declined to say how many patients came from the playoff game. The amputations were predominantly of fingers and toes, and hospital officials predict more surgeries may be required in the coming weeks because "injuries evolve," the AP reported.</p><p>A spokesperson for the hospital did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.</p><p>It was -4 degrees Fahrenheit at the wild card game, with windchill forcing the temperature down to -27 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the AP.</p><p>It was the coldest game ever played at Arrowhead Stadium and the 4th coldest in NFL history, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pbs.org/newshour/nation/chiefs-and-dolphins-play-4th-coldest-game-in-nfl-history-as-deep-freeze-sweeps-the-u-s#:~:text=The%20coldest%20game%20in%20league,known%20as%20the%20Ice%20Bowl.">PBS</a> reported.</p><p>"It was cold, I'm not going to lie. It was cold," Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said, PBS reported. "At the end of the day, you have to be mentally tough enough that if something doesn't work, I'm going to come back and keep firing."</p><p>Tickets for the Dolphins-Chiefs game ranged from $42 to $989, unseasonably low <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kansas-city-chiefs-taylor-swift-travis-kelce-female-viewship-growth-2024-1">due to the frigid weather</a>. <ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="14081696" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="sergio-cossio" source="Orion">Sergio Cossio</keyword> finished <keyword id="14081697" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="edgar-delgado" source="Orion">Edgar Delgado</keyword> with one of the coldest knockouts of the year.</li><li>It appeared he was allowing Delgado time to get back to his feet, but it was little more than a trap.</li></ul><p>No matter how many times you watch combat <keyword id="11893855" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="sports" source="Orion">sports</keyword>, it's rare you'll find something like this.</p><p>Sergio Cossio fought Edgar Delgado in Mexico during a <keyword id="14081698" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="lux-fight-league" source="Orion">Lux Fight League</keyword> 22 event Thursday, and put his opponent in a vulnerable position on the canvas during the main event of the evening.</p><p>After ground-and-pound, Cossio appeared to stand up and move away from Delgado, who may have felt it was safe to return to his feet and engage Cossio in stand-up.</p><p>However, this appeared to be nothing more than a trap, as Cossio caught Delgado off guard and clobbered him with a whack so almighty it knocked him unconscious.</p><p>Normally, the referee might position himself between the two combatants to allow the fighter returning to his or her feet ample time to reset and re-engage in the fight.</p><p>However, the only time the referee inserted himself in this fight was to wave the contest off when it was all over — a mere one second before the end of the first round.</p><p>The result, a knockout win for Cossio, has to be one of the coldest <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/mma" target="_blank" rel="noopener">MMA</a> finishes of the entire year so far.</p><p><strong>Check it out right here:</strong></p><p>Victory advanced Cossio's pro <keyword id="11922276" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="mma" source="Orion">MMA</keyword> record to 24 wins against eight losses and one draw.</p><p>The Lux Fight League 22 event featured 10 MMA matches.</p><p>The Mexico City fight firm has held three events so far in 2022. <p>But one long-term theme was confirmed: we can't ignore the impact of extreme weather on the economy.</p>
<p>"We caution against reading too much into the weakness, as it is clear that special factors during the quarter distorted growth," wrote BofA Merrill Lynch economist Ethan Harris later that afternoon. "The severe winter weather weighed heavily on consumption, fixed investment and trade."</p>
<p>According to David Woo, Head of Global Rates and Currencies Research, weather can create a major shock to the FX markets.</p>
<p>Even though it's almost July, the market has not been able to shake off the effects of this past winter. Not only was it the 3rd most severe winter since 1960, but it has also been the longest one. </p>

<p>Woo says that the winter of 2013-2014 is a temporary shock weighing on rates and has affected the poor numbers in Q1. Therefore, inference about future potential growth is unjustified.</p>
<p>He also added that there is a greater story of climate change. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The winter of 2012-2013 was one of the warmest in U.S. history, but it was one of the coldest in Europe. On the flip side, 2013-2014 was one of the warmest in Europe, but one of the coldest in the U.S.</span></p>
<p>In his words, the poor weather is "punishing" the U.S. economy, while the European economy is "flowering" currently.</p>
<p>Who knows how positively or negatively the climate changes will affect the markets in the future.</p>
