Meanwhile, the Ratnagiri bureau recorded 69.3 mm rainfall and the Harnai weather station registered 165.2 mm rains since Friday. In the arid regions of <keyword id="6359758" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="marathwada">Marathwada</keyword>, Nanded district received 22 mm rains during the span, the IMD said. The esteemed guests discussed the ‘Key success factors for implementing the Extended Producer Responsibility legislation’ and concluded that there is a long way to go for most Indian companies. The discussion was centred around the premise that sustainable global economy should combine long term profitability with ethical behaviour, social justice and environmental care. Tetra Pak has been a stellar example of that by being fully committed to sustainability practices long before the <keyword id="6355833" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="united-nations">United Nations</keyword> insisted on Sustainability reports from companies of all member nations in 2012, and also much before Legislation such as EPR (extended Producer Responsibility) came into play. Recently in Mumbai, over 1600 families in <keyword id="6355459" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="colaba">Colaba</keyword> and Cuffe Parade got four benches made from recycled cartons and installed them at Sagar Upvan, also known as <keyword id="136514" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="mumbai-port-trust">Mumbai Port Trust</keyword> garden. The residents stopped nearly 18,000 cartons from ending up at city’s dumping grounds. This is only one of many such initiatives being run by Tetra Pak, with the help of an execution partner called R U Recycling Greenlife (RUR). According to RUR, around 20% of used cartons sold through Sahakari Bhandar and Reliance Smart and Fresh outlets across Mumbai get deposited by conscious consumers and are recycled into useful products, but the opportunities are immense for other shopper citizens to follow suit. Tetra Pak’s flagship recycling programme, called Go Green, was started in association with Sahakari Bhandar in 2010. With 44 collection centres across the city, Go Green has managed to collect over 20 lakh cartons and recycled them into 250 desks and over 100 garden benches. This initiative is interesting because not only does it promote recycling of packaging materials but it also creates classroom furniture and notebooks out of the recycled material which is then donated to schools for the lesser privileged. Kandarp Singh says, “There is need for a unified approach towards recycling in order to make our cities healthier and more habitable. Being a responsible manufacturer, we have been working ahead of the curve to set up a viable ecosystem to encourage and build awareness around the recycling of our fully-recyclable paper-based cartons. We are very thankful to our partners like Sahakari Bhandar, Reliance Fresh and RUR for their support in. The support that Mumbaikars have extended to us is very encouraging and we are ready to take this mission to the next level over the next few years.” When it comes to sustainability the company is a great example to follow, and their sustainability story does not end at just recycling. The paperboard, which is 75% of the carton, is recycled into useful products and the 25% remaining fraction consisting of the polyethylene and the aluminum can be recycled into panel boards, roof sheets and so on. Globally, sustainability is an important priority for Tetra Pak. Last year, the company launched Tetra Rex, made entirely from plant-based materials and 100 per cent renewable. Other options that Tetra Pak is looking at are biopolymers for caps and more. Another stellar example of the sustainability story is the multi-stakeholder Municipal solid waste management program, ‘Alag Karo Har Din Teen Bin’, in Gurugram which was pivoted by the NGO Saahas starting September 6th. The program is aimed at establishing and sustaining segregation at source and develop capacities of the waste collectors to ensure high recycling rates in Gurugram. “Gurgaon generates 1,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste daily. If source segregation is practised and collection and processing infrastructure is improved, it is possible to reduce the amount of waste being dumped by 85-90%. The MCG has started various projects for source segregation of waste and decentralised waste management,” says Narhari Banger, additional commissioner, MCG. The program aims to reach out to 9000 households; 50 commercial establishments such as Offices and Malls; 50 schools and 500 waste pickers in order to spread awareness about three-way source segregation -dry waste, wet waste and hazardous waste. "We want to sensitise people on proper waste management practices and the value that recyclables like used Tetra Pak cartons can provide to waste dealers and recyclers." says Kandarp Singh. "Our cartons are primarily made from high value paper and are 100% recyclable. We want citizens to be aware of good waste segregation practices and for them to take action in their own homes. We hope the people of Gurgaon see the value of projects like Alag Karo in making our Millennium city cleaner."

Used beverage cartons are being recycled into classroom desks and that’s not where Tetra Pak’s sustainability story ends

The Maharashtra government has declared a day of mourning on Thursday (October 10) to honour the late <keyword id="19981455" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ratan-Tata" source="keywords">Ratan Tata</keyword>, a towering figure in Indian industry, who passed away on Wednesday night at the age of 86. Tata, celebrated for leading the <keyword id="19924335" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Group" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Tata Group" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Tata Group">Tata Group</keyword> to international acclaim, died at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai following a brief illness. In the early hours of Thursday morning, his remains were transported from the hospital to his Colaba residence, accompanied by a police escort. Several prominent figures, including Maharashtra Chief Minister <keyword id="19913631" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Eknath-Shinde" source="keywords">Eknath Shinde</keyword>, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Education Minister Deepak Kesarkar, and industrialist Mukesh Ambani, visited the hospital upon learning of his passing. The Maharashtra Chief Minister’s Office confirmed that, as a mark of respect, the state flag would be flown at half-mast on Thursday, and all entertainment activities would be paused for the day. The public will have the opportunity to pay their respects to Ratan Tata at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in south Mumbai, where his body will lie in state from 10 am to 3:30 pm. Tata’s final rites are scheduled to be performed later on Thursday in Worli. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced late Wednesday night that Ratan Tata will be accorded a state funeral. In a post on X, CM Shinde described Tata as a “unique blend of morality and entrepreneurship” and hailed him as a living legend who successfully led the Tata Group, a conglomerate with a 150-year legacy. “Ratan ji Tata’s mortal remains will be accorded a state funeral,” Shinde said as per a PTI report. Praising Tata’s legacy, Shinde said that the industrialist will remain a source of inspiration for future generations of entrepreneurs. He also recalled Tata’s unwavering strength during the 26/11 terror attacks, when the Tata Group’s Taj Hotel in Colaba was one of the primary targets of the 2008 tragedy. “His resoluteness during the 26/11 terror attack will always be remembered,” the Chief Minister added. Tata, born on 28 December 1937 in Mumbai, was the driving force behind the growth of the Tata Group from 1991 until his retirement in 2012. BJP Leader Tawde said in a post on social media "X", "Prime Minister @NarendraModi ji had given a guarantee to make the life of Mumbaikars easier and this is going to be fulfilled. Mumbai's first underground metro (Aqua Line) is starting from July 24, which will give new impetus to the speed of the city." This new metro line will cover a distance of 33.5 kilometres. Mumbai's first underground metro line will run through Colaba, <keyword id="19907248" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bandra" source="keywords">Bandra</keyword>, and <keyword id="20170419" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SEEPZ" source="keywords">SEEPZ</keyword> (Santacruz Electronics Export Processing Zone). Running a 33.5 km route from Aarey Colony to Cuffe Parade with 27 stops, it will transform urban transit, easing travel across Mumbai's streets and reducing traffic congestion. The new metro line will have stations at Cuffe Parade, Vidhan Bhavan, Churchgate, Hutatma Chowk, CST Metro, Kalbadevi, Girgaon, Grant Road, Mumbai Central Metro, Mahalaxmi, Science Museum, Acharya Atre Chowk, Worli, Siddhivinayak, Dadar, Shitladevi, Dharavi, BKC, Vidyanagari, Santacruz, Domestic Airport, Sahar Road, International Airport, Marol Naka, MIDC, SEEPs and Aarey Depot. Separately, in the last week of June this year, the government of Maharashtra decided to complete the <keyword id="21117856" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mumbai-Metro" source="keywords">Mumbai Metro</keyword> 3 project by the end of December 2024. The first phase of Mumbai Metro 3, will run between SEEPZ (Santacruz Electronics Export Processing Zone) and Bandra Kurla Complex. The project will be completed by the end of December 2024, which was initially scheduled to be completed by September 2024. During the cabinet meeting, Maharashtra's Chief Minister Eknath Shinde gave its nod to giving the state government's share of Rs 1,163 crore directly to the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation, instead of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) for the completion of the project. According to the government, the project has achieved the completion of 98% and its revised cost is Rs 37,275.50 crore. As per the information available on the website of Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation, about 99.2% of civil works under the project have been completed. About 97% of the overall station construction has been completed. Under the project, tunnelling works have been fully completed, while 77.6% of overall systems work, depot civil works 99.8% and mainline track works have been completed almost 87% The introduction of the metro transportation system has witnessed a significant response in the city as the daily ridership of the Mumbai Metro has witnessed a significant increase. On July 24, 2023, the ridership reached 2,12,490, followed by 2,18,635 on July 25, 2023. The highest recorded ridership was on July 26, 2023, with 2,22,290 passengers. This surge in ridership has been observed specifically on the Metro 2A and 7 lines, Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation said in a release.

"Six Taj hotel employees are being treated at BombayHospital and they tested positive to COVID-19. They arerecovering and their condition is stable now," Dr GautamBhansali, consulting physician at Bombay Hospital, said. Without specifying the number of infected employees,the company said in a statement that most of them were"asymptomatic showing absolutely no signs of illness" and thatthe employees were tested proactively. "However, staff testing positive and symptomatic wereduly hospitalized and others who were in contact with themhave immediately been put in quarantine," the companystatement said. In some cases the BMC declares the buildingwhere patients are found and areas around it as "containmentzones". The civic body official only said that three peoplehad tested positive last week. Dr Bhansali said two of thepatients were admitted on Saturday, while the rest had comeearlier. New Delhi, Jul 15 () In the wake of the heavy downpour in Mumbai and coastal Maharashtra, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday upgraded the warning status from orange to red, a special bulletin on the city's rain said on Wednesday. The city has been witnessing heavy rains since Tuesday night, resulting in water logging in many areas. Red alert has been issued for Mumbai, R K Jenamani, scientist with the National Weather Forecasting Centre, said. (Updating with latest weather report) Mumbai, Jun 3 () Severe cyclonic storm 'Nisarga' hit Maharashtra coast near Alibaug in Raigad district with a wind speed upto 120 kmph, but weakened into a cyclonic storm in the evening, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Wednesday. IMD's regional centre in Mumbai said the "severe cyclonic storm" crossed Maharashtra close to south of Alibaug with a maximum sustained speed of 100-110 kmph gusting to 120 kmph between 12:30 pm and 2:30 pm. "The system weakened into a cyclonic storm and lay centered at 16.30 hrs near lat 19.0 deg N and Long 73.7 deg E (Pune District) over interior Maharashtra about 100 km east north east of Alibaug, 90 km east of Mumbai (Colaba) and 50 km north northwest of Pune," it said in the statement. Earlier in the evening, an IMD official had said that the cyclone was moving north-east and was likely to affect Nashik, Dhule and Nandurbar in north Maharashtra apart from north-west part of Pune district. The coastal district of Ratnagiri reported 38 mm rainfall since 8.30 am on Wednesday, the IMD bulletin said. Colaba and Santacruz weather stations in Mumbai reported 46 mm and 22 mm rainfall during the same period, the statement said. Colaba and Santacruz stations reported maximum wind speeds of 50 kmph and 58 kmph, respectively, the IMD said. The department has predicted that it is very likely that Palghar will receive "heavy rain" (64.5-115.5 mm) at isolated places on Thursday. It was also "very likely" that Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, which also came under the influence of the cyclone as did Palghar, will receive "light to moderate rains" (2.5 mm to 64.4 mm) on Thursday. Nashik, predicted to be hit by the cyclone, is very likely to receive "heavy rain at isolated places" on Thursday, while Pune may see "light to moderate rain", the IMD said. "Gale wind, speed reaching 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph, is prevailing over eastcentral Arabian sea and off north Maharashtra coast (Raigad, Mumbai and adjoining Thane), 60-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph along and off Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Palghar and remaining areas of Thane," the statement said.
